61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Island territory seeks self-sufficiency with virtual currency on: November 30, 2013, 08:15:59 AM
Trying to work out how it actually works from another article at
http://m.ft.com/cms/s/0/4903fc9a-591f-11e3-a7cb-00144feabdc0.html

Quote
How would Alderney’s plan work?

An independent company will provide the Bitcoins. If the price plunged, neither Alderney nor the Royal Mint would lose anything.

The company would put the Bitcoins in an escrow account at an agreed price.

Meanwhile, the Royal Mint would take customers’ orders for its minted Bitcoins and receive money from those coin sales.

The virtual Bitcoins backing the physical coins would be held in digital storage facilities by Alderney.

The Mint would issue the commemorative Bitcoin, paying for the value of the gold content itself. Alderney would receive royalties from sales of the coins.

Coins could be redeemed for sterling at any point in Alderney for the price of a Bitcoin on that day.

Sounds like more of a token that has a value tied to Bitcoin rather than a way to use Bitcoin in Alderney, but it's an important symbolic start.  Remember, the island isn't investing in Bitcoin itself and isn't tying itself into it.

62  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Any easy way to purchase LTC or BTC with a UK bank transfer, Debit Card, Skrill on: November 28, 2013, 07:22:29 AM
I've mostly been using localbitcoins recently, and keeping an eye on bitbargain too. Key is to get the right timing on what the market is doing - if there's a rally, wait a bit until you find someone selling at a price you feel happy with.
63  Economy / Digital goods / Selling a couple of domains: satoshi.co.in & crypto.co.in on: November 26, 2013, 10:36:47 PM
Registered these last year but never got round to using, so looking to sell:

  • crypto.co.in
  • satoshi.co.in

Both renewed until 28th August 2014. Updating redirects now to point to this thread to prove ownership.

Looking for 0.2 BTC each, but open to offers and discount for both, and reserve the right to move to an auction style sell if more than one party interested.

Getting this error every time I send some coins: "An outpoint is already spent [(94024681, 1)]" - using the Firefox extension, v3.1.3.

Doesn't seem to affect the transaction though. Any ideas?

66  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: We were wrong on: November 20, 2013, 07:39:16 AM
And as was made a very sharp point, attempting to regulate Bitcoin in the world stage might mean America gets excluded from the party as businesses simply move out of the US entirely to countries that favor or at least don't regulate digital currencies. They must consider this, as noted being the country that favors heavy regulation and red tape will find itself left behind. In many ways the US is already.

This totally. How different nations are responding to Bitcoin is significant. Bittorrent was captured (marketing wise) and demonised pretty quickly by RIAA etc. Bitcoin on the other hand is now seeing much more backing from chief finance people. The difference is that Bitcoin offers the opportunity to earn a quick buck.

In a time of no-growth, any easy money doesn't get turned down quickly. But you can bet that governments are all developing their own Bitcoin kill-switch(es) as well. Just in case.

Really tempted to get 1 or 2, but rate rise has got me hesitating. Depends on a few things, but will try to decide soon Smiley
68  Economy / Speculation / Re: The beginning of the end? on: November 15, 2013, 11:37:19 PM
I'm confused.

If you're an exploited granny then this doesn't stop you being exploited. There's a possibility you could track "coerced" bitcoins back to owner, but the mechanics of proving that require another level of usability and tracking.

If you're a criminal then you work around it by avoiding passing tainted coins into networks which check and/or set up your own laundering/mixing service, probably exploiting more unsuspecting receivers.

If you're receiving tainted coins, your choice is to somehow report them/return them, or use them in places which don't check, which encourages the same criminal laundering/mixing behaviour above.

Only makes sense at a law enforcement/controlling Bitcoin level.
69  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What happens when you ask a toddler to sing about Bitcoin? on: November 13, 2013, 09:31:50 PM
sorry, that link isn't working for me..

Weird, what kind of error do you get?

Thanks for the rest of the encouraging responses Grin FWIW, I do think it's really important to teach not just creativity to kids (or to everyone), but also what 'value' is and isn't. Apparently they don't teach that stuff in school much...

Will let you know how I get on in 15 years Wink
70  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What happens when you ask a toddler to sing about Bitcoin? on: November 12, 2013, 02:24:10 PM
My son (who turned 3 last month) is going through a phase of making up songs, so I thought I’d be cheeky and get him to sing “I like Bitcoins”. He carried on going though, and I liked it so much I asked if he’d like to share it on the Internet. He said “yeah”, so here it is:

https://soundcloud.com/scribe-1/not-coins-wake-up-mix

It’s not very long, but I think it carries a pretty strong message (and also seems to deny that he’s Satoshi Nakamoto). The lyrics:

I like Bitcoins / you la la / don’t you believe / it’s my big fault. /
Wake up / Wake up / Wake up / Wake up / Wake up / Wake up / Wake up / Wake up / Wake up

Any Bitcoin tips would be greatly appreciated - he’s hoping to raise enough to get the full version of “Train World Builder” (currently on sale at $2.99).

Thanks for listening!

Good to hear you sorted it out - one for me to remember too Smiley

Cheers for the tip offer as well - too kind. Here's an address: 13d69kuzM2dRSv4erfBhNXCT1LB5yXDcDo
72  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [Bounty 0.1 BTC] Blockchain.info's RPC api generates TWO different addresses. on: November 11, 2013, 08:28:58 PM
Definitely using the same login/wallet?  Any way to confirm that?

And more paranoidly, definitely hitting blockchain.info in both cases?  I've seen the odd scam site set up to catch domain typos.

Have you got email notifications for incoming payments set up?  Might also help debugging.
73  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [BRAINWALLETS] NoBrainr - a secure cold wallet generator in 1024 bytes on: November 05, 2013, 08:36:12 AM
Great stuff, looks perfect for a small project I'm thinking about, so will be taking a look soon.  Any tips for running it on something that's never been connected to the net to avoid risks?  Eg a useful live Linux distro plus way to get this script across to the machine in question?
74  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Crazy idea: a new currency "backed by" bitcoin on: November 03, 2013, 05:24:46 PM
Probably not totally what you had in mind, but reminds me of an old Q&A/forum(?) site called witcoin.com - which used "witcoins" on your account instead of Bitcoins, but you could exchange them 1:1 in and out of the site.

Sure there were issues of centralised trust (how many people lost their witcoins when the site went down?) but it does highlight the idea of currencies for a specific network/service. I'm also intrigued by whether this could be extended to a geographically local currency, such as a small town money backed by Bitcoin, but localised.

It goes against Bitcoin principles IMHO, but maybe a centralised assignment/monitoring of addresses could work within a network which already trusts itself (to some extent, or via alternative methods). This could help achieve two things: 1. Control over money coming into/going out of the localised currency*, and 2. easier augmented functionality on top of a currency (from no-cost, instant transactions, to things like colored systems, relationship tracking, etc.)

* Again, against the bitcoin idea but common enough in state fiat and local currencies for someone out there to be interested in.

Not looked into Ripple enough, but will have a dig and see if it's useful for this kind of scenario.

Nice idea, I think personalised/custom-made physical Bitcoin stuff is great. How do you store the private key under the hologram - a QR code or folded up paper or something?

Annoying niggle in the Android app - clicking the transaction has in the transaction popup sends you to an address with https:/ instead of https:// - which for me defaults to a Google search instead.

I'm not able to replicate this, what version of the app are you using?

App manager says 3.6 - Play Store website says that's the latest version too. Here's how I get to it: Open app, choose a transaction to open "Transaction Summary" popup, press the underlined Hash value to open the link. I'm opening the link in the default Internet app (Android 4.1.2) which throws me to Google as the URL isn't recognised. Maybe other apps auto-convert https:/ into https:// ?

Lastly, I used to be able to add a label to an address by choosing the transaction - is this still possible? I get the impression the "add note" button adds a public note instead?

It adds a private note to the transaction (stored client side). The only way to add an address label at the moment is to copy the address to clipboard, open the address book, swipe to "sending addresses" and choose "paste sending address". The other way was much easier, I'll look at adding it back in.

Great - good to know there's a workaround in the meantime. Cheers.

Hi Piuk, any word on these two bits on the Android app from a while ago? The first bit me again the other day.

Annoying niggle in the Android app - clicking the transaction has in the transaction popup sends you to an address with https:/ instead of https:// - which for me defaults to a Google search instead.

(snip)

Lastly, I used to be able to add a label to an address by choosing the transaction - is this still possible? I get the impression the "add note" button adds a public note instead?

Cheers.
