Maybe there are many nodes but their solution to the byzantine generals problem is the same one that has been used for thousands of years, central authority. If the ripple foundation was ever compromised than ripple would not be able to continue without them. That is precisely the problem that bitcoin solved and ripple unsolved.

Please expand?

I'm not a Ripple expert, but I believe the keyword is "distributed". Big difference. If they could claim decentralized, they would. My understanding is that all transactions on the Ripple network depend on trust relationships between gateways, which act as the authority.

Here's an article I found helpful when trying to understand Ripple:
http://blog.coinsetter.com/2013/04/29/virtual-currency-trading-wars-bitcoin-versus-ripple-xrp/

Gateways deal with all the govt regulations and the issuing of IOUs into the ripple network. Once in the ripple network, all the trades, etc. are done via consensus of distributed rippled servers. The gateways are not directly involved in ripple network transactions other than redemptions.

Not sure of the number of non-RL servers, but my guess is around 100 total rippled servers are running.

James

Ah, so the trust relationship is between the ripple servers. Got it. So, if the server operators (Ripple Foundation, governments, banks?) ever collude to come to a consensus that supports a dishonest transaction, there would be no way to prove otherwise, because the transaction confirmation depends on their consensus rather than a decentralized processing of the blockchain?

So the difference between Ripple and all truly decentralized cryptocurrencies is that all Ripple users have to trust the people who control the servers (i.e. the Ripple Foundation). A true crypto like Bitcoin or Nxt is entirely trustless in operation.

I think there should be an article on this in the Nxt wiki, because once our decentralized exchange comes out, a lot of people will be asking what the benefit over Ripple is.

*EDIT* This post is still rather confused on the issue. jl777 explains further a bit later on.

Ripple is centralized.

No it's not. Their network is decentralized. Sure they have pre-mine, but so do we.

Quote
Because Ripple’s exchange is distributed as opposed to centralized, the whole concept of co-location becomes fundamentally different. There is simply no central location near which you would co-locate for a speed advantage. Ripple exists on servers around the world, and anyone can easily spin up their own copy of a Ripple server for free. (The code is open source.)

Ya know what i was thinking today? of course you don't thats why I'm about to tell you.

I've been hearing a lot of criticism of bitcoin lately from the potential for altcoins to erode the trust in the concept of digital scarcity. Most notably the interview with adam back on lets talk bitcoin. By building decentralized exchange into the bottom protocol layer I think nxt can potentially restore this trust. Think about it, no other copy of nxt will ever have markets with as much market depth as nxt. Meaning their copy nxt will never has as much utility. Thus a copy of nxt is not "just as good as nxt". Since no copy of nxt will ever be "just as good as nxt" nxt can be thought of as scarce in a way that bitcoin can not.

I think this could be added to our list of "core arguments" in favor of nxt.

I don't quite understand the strength of this argument. Can you flesh it out? Couldn't some other crypto also implement a decentralized exchange into its protocol and compete to gain market depth based on that + some extra advantage that they claim to have? Also, isn't the argument in favor of Bitcoin already that, due to its network effect, no other coin can compete with it in market depth? If Nxt can compete with Bitcoin's market depth, what's to stop another coin from competing with Nxt's?

I plan to use General Fuzz in the full podcast but not in the 1-minute bits because I can't properly give credit (the music I use in the 1-min bits is royalty-free and paid for). I'd be happy to compensate a bit for using Fuzz in the full 'cast!

I found it handy to reduce the volume of the music in the center of the listening field by 3 dB. This allows the music to be a little louder while leaving lots of room for the voiceover. I can send you the modified file, or you can do it yourself in your DAW. I use Reaper (free to download), and it's really easy to do in Reaper: right-click on the pan control for the track, override the default pan-law and choose -3dB.

No, I took BCNext's idea what colors to use to print Nxt banknotes.

Seriously, we have many talented people here, who are good at design. Just look how many logo samples we've got in that contest.

Ask them to do it professionally.

Hexagon on the side sucks.
Hexagon on the point is too much like your Qubix.

Have you seen the engraving sample somebody posted here? Simple, no hexagon, still looks great.

+1

And this is already such a great graphic for use with "green" campaigns:

Honestly, I'm not really a fan of the hexagon or the colors.

Everyone take a look at http://www.nxtcrypto.org/ to remind yourself of how awesome our current graphics and logos are.
67  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 28, 2014, 07:51:31 PM

I like the hexagons standing on a point like this better than lying on a side.

I think like the colors in the original sample textures better. It looks richer.

Also, it would be good to see a circle version as well for comparison, using all of CfB's ideas except the hexagon.

Bter volume is 216 BTC
DGEX volume is 93 BTC

WHY THE HELL DO YOU STILL SHOW DATA FROM DGEX ? ? ? ? ?
REPLACE WITH BTER FOR F@CKS SAKE!!!!

I agree, but approaching these issues diplomatically would be much more effective. I'm sure Gliss is a busy person and gets piles of requests daily.

Perhaps a way to combine stats from all exchanges will be better. Nxt is now also on vircurex and likely to be on crypsty soon as well, so this will be important. How is the volume determined for Bitcoin? It looks like it is aggregated from the three largest exchanges at least. A fair representation of Nxt would require similar aggregation, since many people use volume as a major factor in their decisions.

Excellent!

you should share your little intro chimes with him.

I did, joefox uses my open and close in the second one, and will use it in all the subsequent ones, but the first one needed a slightly different opening to introduce the whole thing.

Or were you referring to the music? I used The Arrival by General Fuzz: http://www.generalfuzz.net/tunes.php
NxtChg commented that it sounds like a viagra commercial though, and I think he has a point. joefox's music is a decent neutral background for presenting news, and is enough to create a recognizable atmosphere for the segment.

Good point. This needs to be fixed ASAP. Better yet, combine stats from all exchanges. Shouldn't be too hard to do. Who has made contact with them before?

That is good news because they did not want to list nxt before because it was considered a premined coin.
It is a nice story now. Pin came with the idea, then we started to tweet them, after 6 tweets they added a poll. We marketed a poll and got good numbers. Then Dogecoins fans came and started to fight against us, they created reddit polls to take us down. So we came there and downvoted their reddit posts + argued with those POW lovers. We went from 80:20 to 70:30, but - WE WON!

So basically you're telling me...

Nxt Marketing Team +1 vs. Doge Marketing Team 0

hahaha

We should be careful not to paint Doge fans as the enemy. Rather, consider them as future Nxters and treat them with respect. Many of them are probably just reacting to scare tactics from the really entrenched Nxt haters, who are very vocal, but relatively few in number.

Once they learn more facts about Nxt, most Doge fans will probably come around to our point of view.

joefox's lastest attempt at the one minute spot:

Hello all,

Based on the discussions today in the main thread, and here, I've got two updated "Nxt Minute" bits.  I've based the text on the "most-optimized" one thus far, and have taken a stab at a more conversational tone.

Links:

Nxt Minute #1 (the general intro):  https://soundcloud.com/whatsupnxt/nxtminute-0001
Nxt Minute #2:  https://soundcloud.com/whatsupnxt/nxtminute-0002

Excellent!

a sneak peak to my idea about a green Nxt video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ic_WLMPX888&feature=youtu.be

Great!

Some feedback:

"$301/day for securing network" should maybe be "$301/day to secure entire network", or "total cost to secure entire network: $301/day", because I first thought the $301/day was referring to the guy in the boat.

"Don't freeze on Iceland" should probably be "Don't freeze in Iceland". Although maybe it could be either. If referring to a country it should be "in", if referring to an island it should be "on". *edit* so maybe "on" is fine in this case.

When referring to transactions per second, not everyone will understand what "TPS" means. It might be better to actually say "transactions per second".

Regarding the one minute spots on LTB. There's going to be two of them per week, and we obviously can't afford to spend this much time arguing about what to say in each of them. In the interest of moving forward, I suggest we establish a consistent format for these spots, and then commission joefox to spearhead the content creation, with any contributions/suggestions from the community ultimately being decided on by him.

The general feeling from feedback I'm getting is:
a) we don't want it to sound like an advertisement
b) we want to recruit new talent/influencers to the community

In light of this, I propose a mini-news format that all spots follow, with a consistent opening and closing phrase. This will establish a brand for the segment, educate first-time listeners, and encourage regular listeners to consider it as a sort of mini-podcast within the main podcast.

Here is the framework I suggest:
-----------------

OPEN:
This is (insert name) bringing you news on Nxt - the first true second generation crypto.

CONTENT

CLOSE:
For more info, head on over to nxtcrypto.org (that is  n x t  c r y p t o .org).
Stay tuned for more news on Nxt in the next Lets Talk Bitcoin broadcast.

Ok so I'm not getting enough support from the community for it to be worth my time to continue working on this. So ill just post it here and you guys can do w/e you like with it. or nothing with it. w/e i wash my hands.

Anon, I respect what you write about Nxt so much. I hope you'll continue to write material that can be used to educate and recruit new Nxters. Here's a proposal that I hope you'll seriously consider: how about writing an article for the bitcoinmagazine website about Nxt, in the spirit of this Ethereum article:

http://bitcoinmagazine.com/9671/ethereum-next-generation-cryptocurrency-decentralized-application-platform/

I think Nxt needs a presence on this website to compete with the publicity Etherium is getting from them, and few could pull it off as well as you. I suggest that this effort be funded by the community marketing funds.

Salsacz, what do you think?
79  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 27, 2014, 11:13:54 PM

I just really disagree that LTB listeners should be treated like late night infomercial denizens by being bombarded with "catch phrases" and the like.

Ok, maybe a catch phrase is a bit much, but there needs to be a short definition each week for the benefit of those who are hearing about Nxt for the first time. It needs to be short so it doesn't take up too much room in the spot.

tell me what you had in mind.

I'll work on something, but I won't have time to think about it for an hour or two.

I still think your new draft is much too complicated for a 1 minute spot. I think I'm a pretty good representation of an average listener (professional software developer, technically-minded, but haven't delved into the inner-workings of crypto-algorithms), and that paragraph is something I need to mull over, re-read, and process slowly in order to follow your train of thought. Simplifying it in order to make it more digestible in one listen won't insult anyone's intelligence. It might be necessary to break some of the content out into other spots.
