The Culture of our Industry Sucks but The Technology is Awesome!
What has been going on in our industry is sad, but not surprising. It is sad that majority of the investors that came to the party late have suffered significant loses. Furthermore, among those of us, who have been investing in our industry for many years, we have seen the accumulation of a small fortune only to see it vanished – sometimes at a total loss as in the cases of disappearing exchanges, (CryptoRush, MintPal, AllCoin, and Cryptsy,) developers abandoning their projects, and scammers taking full advantage at every turn.
While I continued to believe that ICO is the best capital formation tool – allowing for full global participation from micro to large investment, it has been abused with great disregard for existing security laws. With ramped-up SEC enforcement actions our industry is now at risk of a pro-long self-inflicted slow down with diminishing retail investors.
This is by far the most lawless industry that I have ever seen in my 40+ years as an entrepreneur. When I did my first industry research, exactly five years ago, my first reaction was that “I wouldn’t touch it with a ten-foot pole.” That conclusion was based on the nasty wild-west culture of our industry. And it has not changed much. But I have faith that it will. Law and order always prevail. But it will not stop those from throwing themselves in self-destruct mode as we are seeing in our industry one more time.
Decentralized entities are leaderless and cannot be controlled by individuals or groups of individuals. As such, it can be chaotic, as we are seeing in the current case of Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin – causing great uncertainty with unruly volatilities. This will scare away even more retail investors, destroying any wishful thinking of mass adoption soon.
I give up my retirement five years ago because of my unwavering conviction that the technology that led to the birth of our industry is awesome. While the culture sucks, with great leadership I believe that it can be changed. That has been the firm commitment of DNotes since its launch on February 18, 2014. We have always been steadfast on our commitment to do what is right, executing at the right time, and doing things the right way.

Thanks Alan, great article. The amount of commitment required to stick around and see a project through in this industry is staggering, but in the end it will be well worth it. And thank you for that commitment, it means a lot to all of us who are doing what we can to help make DNotes a success! So, about being lawless, I agree with you but, I also think it's more perception than reality. I would venture to say, DCEBrief excluded, that we have the worst, most biased, profit centered and useless news sources I have ever seen. With a few exceptions, they are ALL basically worthless and if printed on paper, would be relegated to the supermarket checkout line. There are no editors, no impartial sources, no checking of self proclaimed "facts" and many times, even no relevance to what actually may, or may not, have happened. It is a proven fact that many of these sources will print whatever you present for a fee and call it "News". What better way to manipulate the overall sentiment of the industry? I want to harm my competitor? Just pay for a dirt article, true or not, it will be printed. We really need to take this bull by the horns but it won't be easy. Most people are blind to this kind of manipulation or just don't care. Perhaps they think it's harmless or, actually believe everything they read but, complacency equals agreement and support for this activity and that is hurting us all. There is something you can do to help and that is to call them out on it when you see this or recognize something you know is unproven or a down right lie. Most of these outlets have a comments section, most use DISQUS as an immediate third party posting solution for direct feedback and allow Twitter, Reddit, LinkedIn, Telegram and others for sharing your opinion. DISQUS accounts are free, sign up and post your opinion or, call them out when they are wrong or shilling for money, it's not hard to tell. I know it's not much but, it's easy and quick and your comment may well shed light on something everyone else took for granted. Every little bit helps! PS: I'm not shilling DISQUS! This is a long article but one that is worth reading. The damages caused by the ICO craze may take years to overcome. It may turn out to be an industry self-induced cleaning up that could negatively impact some of the biggest success stories in our industry. DNotes is one of the oldest coins and among the few that stayed clear out of ICO. Like Bitcoin, not a single DNotes has been sold as an investment to support the coin. DNotes is approaching its fifth birthday (Feb. 18, 2019). There is a lot behind the DNotes story since so much has been accomplished. Fantastic work on that article Primoz! Many great insights, a few that I'll comment on: Firstly, LinkedIn is quite the social community. Your social network can grow very rapidly because so many people want to grow their personal network and brand and/or engage in solicitation. I'm quite convinced that people would go all the way to the moon to get more connections and followers in the social media age. Unfortunately, while there are a lot of decent people and opportunities to be found on LinkedIn, a lot of the content and people are using it for less savory purposes. It's much like cryptocurrencies or any other network that has great potential to assist good people -- the occasional bad person finds a good use for it. But as all regulators need to be reminded, we wouldn't make shoes illegal just because robbers will use them to run away from a crime scene. I like your mix of cryptocurrency projects that you have personally invested in. I notice you have Bitcoin, Ripple, and DNotes or (decentralized, centralized, and one that combines the best of both world's where appropriate within its ecosystem). I think that over time, it will become more clear that the combination of both may be needed. DNotes is indeed very different -- the central quality that preempts just about all others, that we hold paramount, is to be the most trusted brand. A trusted reputation can be built upon. Unsolicited business offers from people you don't know on LinkedIn cannot. Not cool  I can't wait for a day when crypto would be widely accepted method of payment and we will be able to avoid transactions from crypto back to fiat in prder to buy sth. By doing that we will be able to eliminate the middleman (Banks). I think that DNotes is on the right track to do just that I agree. It's almost like having a law that requires the disclosure of how much cash you have in your wallet. That is beyond being over-reaching. |

We all know that guy, dancing like no one is watching, doing his own thing. He doesn't care what anyone else thinks. Meanwhile everyone else around him is sitting, not wanting to engage with him, not wanting to seem weird and worried what everyone else will say. After a short time, maybe 20 seconds, someone else takes a chance and starts dancing with this guy. They’re over their shyness now, equals dancing away, doing their own thing. Slowly, but surely others pick up on this and start dancing too. Eventually there’s a crowd dancing and all those people sitting down rush to join in, wanting to fit in and be popular, not wanting to be left out Those first few people who join in dancing with the first guy are crucial - the early adopters. As the video says "everyone needs to see the followers, because new followers emulate followers - not the leader" and "the best way to make a movement is to courageously follow and show others how to follow." Now, if you agree with me, and believe in the clear and logical vision DNotes has laid out and is committed to, there are a lot of things you can do to be a supportive early adopter. It can be as simple as posting, liking and commenting regularly in our online community forums, telegram, and other social media. You can buy Alan's book, which explains the philosophy and strategies behind DNotes Global, or listen to the 50 cent audio version. These are wholly owned by DNotes Global. and reading it. An honest review on Amazon could encourage many unsure observers still sitting down to get up and dance, leading them to DNotes. I am retired from the U.S. Army and have been teaching leadership classes for the last 12 years and everything I see here on a daily basis is exactly what we teach. At least as I understand the crypto community in general. Most (but luckilly not all) people in crypto space just want to get rich...fast Some of them of course succeed, but there are many more who fails  With the DNotes maybe little bit more patience is required, but the risk is much smaller than with many other coins with high flying promises which offer overnight success As far as I'm concerned DNotes has really good long term chance of success I think that sooner people realise that in most cases there are no shortcuts to success the better. In that way you can avoid many disappointments. A little bit of patience can be really rewarding, not only in everyday life but also in the crypto. You just have to find the good coin with reliable and trustworthy team behind it...DNotes is really good example of all that Great observation Amadeus, there certainly was a lot of fast and loose money in our industry as projects shot into the stratosphere with little more than hype and a promise. I think there are 3 key components that led to this exuberance of investing in this space. 1) It's very easy to see what a revolution bitcoin and blockchain has introduced to the world and its potential. 2) Many people feel excluded from real world exciting investments, early high risk high reward investments, but not in our industry, literally anyone can participate. 3) Many believe in the premise and stand behind what the technology can do for society. Couple that with the fact that the barrier for entry into this industry are very low and anyone can make any claim, regardless of if they can or intend to fulfill those claims, and what we wound up with is what I would describe as multiple parabolic waves of investment from disenfranchised people who believe in what cryptocurrency and blockchain has to offer in hopes of breaking through their own financial barriers. The crypto wave and ICO wave are the most obvious and there may be many more to come. Right now, I think people have wised up and the initial ICO craze is slowing down as people are starting to look for projects of real substance. There are probably many more waves to come, but I think they will be more focused on substantial and trusted projects and even new use cases from established and trusted companies. This is where DNotes will shine and we feel like now is the time for DNotes and DNotes Global to begin to play a leading role in the industry. DNotes is not about hype and get rich quick, it's about building an inclusive digital currency for use in global commerce that everyone can benefit from. It is our hope that many people will join us in this still early phase while DNotes is what I would call still well undervalued in comparison to our industry. It will take a good deal of research to differentiate DNotes from our competitors and see what really makes us unique, but I am confident most people who spend the time will get really excited about what we are doing. Hi guys! Two questions:
1. I'm looking for a DNotes wallet for Ubuntu 16.04 CLI version, I don't have an Ubuntu desktop version so I can't use the qt wallet. Is there any?
2. For receiving the staking rewards, does the wallet need to be online 24/7?
I'm also curious where DNotes is heading in the future. I see that Alan is now touring the world to spread awareness for the upcoming Dnotes IPO. Are you still waiting on the SEC approval? And what happens after the IPO?
Hi Wosterlee, Typically we would recommend building the daemon from source, if you are familiar with this process for any crypto it's mostly the same. I don't have access to everything at the moment, but I can provide instructions tomorrow if needed. I haven't used the client only version, but that just reduces the functionality to RPC only. Yep, it should be always online for staking. We have started Reg D 506 (c) fundraising efforts (for accredited investors, https://investors.dnotesglobal.com/), that will be followed by a Reg A+ Mini-IPO (for accredited and non-accredited investors), and lastly a full IPO but that will be a couple of years from now most likely. Actually, one view and one idiotic rant from someone who should not be speaking in public on ANY subject. You're not wrong. As a rule, we should all be skeptical of anyone whose first response to technological innovation is to cast shade and call it a scam or a worthless idea with no real potential. I'm old enough to remember when people I knew and respected confidently predicted that personal computers would never catch on. Many of those same people later laughed at the idea that the internet would ever amount to anything more than a curiosity. The more things change, the more some things - and people - remain the same. In this instance it appears that both are somewhat correct, but Roubini - having a rather critical view and potential set of entrenched interests to pursue by keeping cryptocurrency at bay - is hammering home just what he sees before him, and focusing more on how people are using a new technology, rather than the technology itself. Sometimes, even though there is a ton of crap in our industry that needs to be resolved (like all new things), it takes a while until people really learn how technology will end up being used in a practical sense. This is one of the things that DNotes and DNotes Global Inc. has been intensely focusing on. Technologies always evolve and never started out perfect. Together, we make it near perfect over a long period of time. We have seen it in personal computers, wireless communication, the Internet, and more. We are witnessing the greatest technology revolution since the internet. But this is significantly bigger and more widespread allowing for true global participation of up to 90% of the global population by 2027 with full implementation of the next generation of cell phone – G5. Since the wealthiest 3% own a larger amount than the remaining 97% global wealth, digital currency with its underpinning block technology has positive world-changing implications. Direct payment between two parties without the participation of a third party makes it possible for the first time in human history to have a technology that provides equal opportunity and participation globally in micro payment, micro investment and other funding programs. I am concerned about the ruthless culture and rampant bad behavior in our industry. Light-touch regulations are highly appropriate.
