61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Do we bring the value of BitCoins back up? on: August 26, 2011, 12:58:57 AM
Using Bitcoin for gambling is a good idea, the more people that use it as play money the better Cheesy
62  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin could be used to create a silkroad for books on: August 26, 2011, 12:54:12 AM
This already exists and doesn't need bitcoin. See alt.binaries.e-book and the book channels on Undernet (if they're still going, it's been years since I checked)
63  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Microsoft Security Essentials on: August 25, 2011, 06:11:06 PM
Report it as a false positive.
64  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bidding Pond vs Ebay on: August 21, 2011, 04:00:34 PM
Last time I used bidding pond, the seller retracted the item because I was about to get a bargain and I couldn't even leave bad feedback. I haven't been back.
65  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Extortion with Bitcoin on: August 21, 2011, 12:31:06 AM
Pretty good idea and I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

DDoS extortionism has been big business since about 2004, the only problem is actually getting hold of the money. If bitcoins were the preferred method of payment it may sever the link to the real world and make finding these people impossible.

Not sure how to handle such a situation, but it's a nice thought experiment nonetheless.
66  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ATTN MTGOX] MINOR SELL BUG FOUND on: August 21, 2011, 12:02:21 AM
If you make a sell order for 10BTC plus fees but you only have 9.99BTC, your order is split into two parts, one at 9.99 BTC minus fees, the remainder being some small fraction of a bitcoin. You can then quickly cancel the large part and the second becomes valid.
67  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: $80 Android Phone Sells Like Hotcakes in Kenya on: August 19, 2011, 02:12:26 PM
They're $140 online.
68  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: when I google "paypal alternatives" Bitcoin doesnt appear in the results! on: August 19, 2011, 02:01:42 PM
No need to make it as dishonest/spammy as "Paypal alternatives" (claiming plural), most search engines (including Google) will include links containing "Paypal alternative" and "alternative to Paypal" in results for that query.

+1 to staraptor, who sent over the requested amount for a piece of programming work I did Smiley

You have a very high-level idea of what you want, how big you want it to be, and what it will look like. You do not, however, have usability requirements, cost/server requirements, specific security requirements, and so on. Therefore you throw out a vague suggestion about your potential project, with assumed technologies that you've heard about from friends/blogs/etc, and plan on simply explaining the idea in your head to a programmer, hoping they can build it.

He's not asking for a software engineer, he's looking for a solution architect to figure out the technical requirements, do the spec work and then stick around as a project manager and/or development lead. This is at least one person above the likes of us, the guy who used to be a hacker but now writes documents and draws boxes and Gantt charts all day.
71  Other / Off-topic / Re: The best investment: Get drunk on: August 15, 2011, 12:41:10 AM
A wise man once said...

Quote from: Bertrand Russell
One of the commonest things to do with savings is to lend them to some Government. In view of the fact that the bulk of the public expenditure of most civilized Governments consists in payment for past wars or preparation for future wars, the man who lends his money to a Government is in the same position as the bad men in Shakespeare who hire murderers. The net result of the man's economical habits is to increase the armed forces of the State to which he lends his savings. Obviously it would be better if he spent the money, even if he spent it in drink or gambling.

The man who invests his savings in a concern that goes bankrupt is therefore injuring others as well as himself. If he spent his money, say, in giving parties for his friends, they (we may hope) would get pleasure, and so would all those upon whom he spent money, such as the butcher, the baker, and the bootlegger. But if he spends it (let us say) upon laying down rails for surface card in some place where surface cars turn out not to be wanted, he has diverted a mass of labor into channels where it gives pleasure to no one. Nevertheless, when he becomes poor through failure of his investment he will be regarded as a victim of undeserved misfortune, whereas the gay spendthrift, who has spent his money philanthropically, will be despised as a fool and a frivolous person.
72  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Help translating Bitcoin Wallet for Android on: August 15, 2011, 12:30:52 AM
That said, I think it can get difficult to get several dialects of the same language in. For example English, the is currently only one language code and that is "en".
You can add a country code to the end of your language code as shown in How Android Finds the Best-matching Resource. See the platform SDK release notes for a list of officially supported locales (en_US, en_GB, en_CA, en_AU and en_NZ English are supported the 2.x SDK).

It's also worth noting that modified ROMs may decide to implement more locales, so if you write for 2.x and include en_IE and en_ZA, you could have this support without needing Android 3.x. You can call Locale::getAvailableLocales from desktop Java for a list of all currently known possibles (on your system), or even make up new ones from the appropriate ISO standards (though I haven't looked into that).
73  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Scammed by Ryanwebber/Zem? Come here. on: August 14, 2011, 02:24:30 PM
Why not get a list of all transactions from them, or help with the investigation and let them go to prison?
74  Economy / Digital goods / Re: ANY Games on STEAM + MORE for BTC - I STILL HAVE THE QUAKECON PACK! GOOD REP! on: August 14, 2011, 02:43:24 AM
Just bought Deus Ex Human Revolution on pre-order, incredibly fast transaction!

75  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin URL scheme: have any proposals been adapted? on: August 14, 2011, 01:28:28 AM
If you have a confirmation box then a simple VBScript which launches an URL and calls sendkeys to confirm the transaction could potentially drain your account. I suggest putting the confirmation box on a secure desktop to prevent this possibility.
76  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Created by the CIA! on: August 13, 2011, 10:46:03 PM
Bitcoin was most likely dreamt up by a crypto-anarchist, Satoshi is most likely one or more Cypherpunks who wish(es) to remain anonymous and is/are good at being anonymous.

Whenever you think conspiracy, remember Occam's Razor.
77  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin bounty website on: August 13, 2011, 09:57:02 PM
1 and 2 is doable using the current system:
Upon receiving some funds you can create an temporary address/private key pair, send the funds to this new address, and use the generated private key to generate the two outgoing transactions. Now store both transactions and throw away the temporary private key.
That way the original address does not vanish and so no coins will be lost.
This idea rocks! Are there any escrow services that use this method? If not, there should be!
78  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Announcing BCCAPI on: August 13, 2011, 09:49:50 PM
This looks pretty cool, nice work Smiley

I doubt I'll have time to make an Android client from this, but I'd be more than happy to test one!
79  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: bitcoin.org.uk community portal, wishlist feedback request on: August 13, 2011, 01:27:04 PM
Here's a tip: You have too many forums and not enough users. You'll die of stagnation if you don't let it build up slowly, I've seen it happen in the wild scores of times.
80  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [FEELER] Bitcoin bounty project on: August 12, 2011, 12:41:10 AM
As per the other thread, I have a domain and enthusiasm and a desire to write code. Smiley

The project would be strictly limited to improving bitcoin-related open source projects with an initial primary focus on improving the usability and security of the bitcoin client and a secondary focus on other improvements (such as bugfixes) to the bitcoin client.

I'd prefer to have something for all open source projects rather than just Bitcoin, partly for my own selfish needs.

The biggest issue for me is the security of holding other people's money. If anyone knows a better way than transferring coins to offline encrypted wallets with emergency key backups printed on hidden sheets of paper, I'd love to hear it. Perhaps I can find three trusted people and give them each 2/3 of the key as an emergency backup in case I get hit by a bus.

I'd like to have no liability at all, hell, I'd really like it if it were completely decentralized. What do you think about the "many sponsors per project" idea from the other thread? There is the risk of money being lost and/or not paid out if someone loses their password, but it would be risk-free from the site's point of view.

Anyhow, count me in. Smiley
