WordPress said Thursday it will accept bitcoins, opening up the blogging platform to payments from users in countries not supported by PayPal or credit card companies.
WordPress is free, open-source software, but the company Automattic offers paid-for features such as blog designs, custom domains, hosting partnerships and anti-spam measures.
As with many Web-based services, payments for those features are dependent on credit card transactions and eBay's PayPal service. But WordPress wrote on its blog that PayPal doesn't serve more than 60 countries, and credit card companies have restrictions due to political, fraud and other reasons. http://www.itworld.com/it-management/315974/wordpress-accept-bitcoins-due-paypal-credit-card-blocks

“I don’t see any value in [Bitcoin] unless you’re a drug dealer or a gambler,” Kaminsky says. “It’s a very small group [that uses bitcoins] that most merchants wouldn’t want to be associated with.”
But Holmquist says Bitcoin is already overcoming the bad reputation, with more consumers and merchants in the market accepting the currency for products that are legal to sell.
Harvey, the guitar seller, says, “the bitcoin economy is tiny, but growing at a rapid pace. As more users and vendors adopt the currency it becomes more useful, leading to increased adoption. The ball is in the court of any skeptic to explain how this growth will suddenly peter out.”

Anybody know any WordPress employees? We gotta get them to start asking for salary in bitcoins, now that WordPress is going to have a bunch of them.

At WordPress.com, our mission is making publishing democratic — accessible and easy for anyone, anywhere. And while anyone can start a free blog here, not everyone can access upgrades (like going ad-free or enabling custom design) because of limits on traditional payment networks.
Today, that changes: you can now buy WordPress.com upgrades with bitcoins. This is huge news! Read the whole thing. A ringing endorsement. http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2012/11/15/pay-another-way-bitcoin/

A couple of us drove down from New Hampshire and set up a table at the Students for Liberty conference at Columbia University in New York City. They have lots of these conferences around the country and it's really easy to register for a free table. We had a great time, and talked to dozens of liberty-minded students about Bitcoin. Many of them had never heard of it before, some had and were confused, but all were very interested. We also spoke with a econ PhD student who's interested in writing an academic paper on Bitcoin, and the Executive Director of the Foundation for Economic Education who wants to publish a piece on Bitcoin. We're taking some more people and hitting the SFL conferences in Boston and then Philadelphia over the next two weekends, and we'll be bringing our cards. If anybody wants cards, we're selling physical cards for cost, and you can download the designs for free. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=119023.0Do you live near any of these cities? You might be interested in setting up a table at a local SFL conference! Risk compensation (also Peltzman effect, risk homeostasis) is an observed effect in ethology whereby people tend to adjust their behavior in response to perceived level of risk, behaving less cautiously where they feel more protected and more cautiously where they feel a higher level of risk. The theory emerged out of road safety research after it was observed that many interventions failed to achieve the expected level of benefits but has since found application in many other fields. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk_compensation

I'm pretty sure this was written by several different authors. You can just feel the sections by the young, inquisitive guy, excited by this new technology, being thrown together in a hodgepodge with sections from the staid old career bankers, trying to protect their trade.

Thanks, everybody! The cards are in printing now, and I'll post some photos as soon as we get them.

My brother and I have been working on some Bitcoin marketing material for the upcoming Students for Liberty conferences in New York City and Boston. We're going to be manning a table there with the good folks from the Free State Project, to try and get the young ones interested in Bitcoin! We're putting the design work into the public domain and we'd love for people to download it and print their own. We'll also be selling printed material for you to order online. We've got a lot of exciting ideas we're working on, so stay tuned for more! Like what you see? You can help us cover the design and printing costs by shooting us some coins: | 1G6M2CYpRyD6DpBppHhGCZVzLNkhACNDM1 |

What a great meetup! We had some delicious Brazilian cheese bread paninis, fantastic cold brewed coffee and great desserts at Pao Brazilian Cafe in Newmarket, New Hampshire. As you can see, we all paid in Bitcoins, and left some Bitcoin tips, too. Best of all, we made a Boston connection, when teamhugs came all the way up thru the Massachusetts border. We also had some new members from the New Hampshire seacoast.

Great to meet you all. Happy to find some "local" btc people. The ride only cost about 1.547 btc in fuel. Great meeting you! Nashua will be even less gas, and maybe the btc gas price will go down by then.

Damnit! I won't be able to make it.
I didn't think any businesses around here accepted bitcoins. That's really cool!
We'll have to do it again soon.
