61  Economy / Service Discussion / What exchanges/brokers allow you to short BTC? on: February 10, 2014, 12:51:47 PM
I know Bitfinex does but they have serious service issues lately...but aren't there others?
62  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitfinex down AGAIN - just cost me $7000 on: February 10, 2014, 12:44:25 PM
What other brokers allow you to short bitcoin?  I know some people talk about using Metatrader 4 but what service is this through?

I have had some good experiences with Bitfinex but once you start to lose more and more money due to their site outages, you do have to consider other options.

Dear users,

The trading engine is currently stopped due to the recent volatility and the fact that we exhausted our funds on Bitstamp in this critical moment.

We are waiting for new deposit to hit our Bitstamp account, after which we will resume the trades.

have a good day
Raphael

You do know that this is going to happen over and over and over again when the market has some volatility?   That outtage just cost me $8000 in profits and I'm sure many lost even more...just not acceptable.  You guys need a better system with your site.

Feel free to post any suggestion.
We will pay you if they make sense.
Otherwise just stop talking nonsense.

Giancarlo
Bitfinex Team

The suggestion is to FIX YOUR WEBSITE.  Hire some people who are smart enough to do it if you are not.

Bitstamp DID NOT go down

BTC-E DID NOT go down

Bitfinex did go down.... not tough to figure out who is incompetent here.
66  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [OFFICIAL]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: February 10, 2014, 12:27:47 PM

I'd just like to point out that if we did not have stopped the trading engine, the cascading effect of liquidations would have been terrible (just look at the charts already).

So we DID make the right choice in halting the trading engine to avoid this situation.

One day the Bitcoin market will become mature enough to support this level of volume, right now it isn't;

THanks for your comprehension
Raphael

So why didn't Bitstamp go down?  It was up the entire time that you "halted" trading (without warning).

BTC-e did not go down either.

It's not the Bitcoin market that isn't "mature" enough...it is Bitfinex that is immature.

Gox is the joke. They started this. The press release was spiteful and vindictive of the bitcoin protocol after all the news articles of "mtgox halts withdrawals", MT cut off the nose of bitcoin to spite it's face.

No there are going to be days with big news and high volatility and any decent website would not crash whenever there is some volume.  This happens over and over on that site...nothing new.
69  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [OFFICIAL]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: February 10, 2014, 11:56:54 AM
Now this is really interesting! Did you watch this on the charts yourself? I only noticed something was up when the red candle was already quite impressive. Sure enough, /r/bitcoin showed the answer by then.

I was in #mtgox at the time, waiting for the release to be announced. We were all wondering why MtGox was rallying down and at around 620 and falling and then came the release.

I'm sure quite a few others noticed and can verify this.

I shorted on bitfinex at 690...could have covered at 535 if the site worked.
70  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [OFFICIAL]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: February 10, 2014, 11:47:34 AM
its already 10 mins.. trading still halted

It's been more like an hour
71  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [OFFICIAL]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: February 10, 2014, 11:41:31 AM
and now stamp is way above any other price, so the second finex comes back up, price will only be 100$ over where we would have sold, cool.

It's up $130 from the low now..  We could have covered our shorts at $535 if the site worked.

Freaking can not close a short position when the market is tanking WTF....

Yeah cost me $10,000 at this point..watch them wait until the price is up to $700 again before they fix it, so we will lose money instead.
73  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [OFFICIAL]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: February 10, 2014, 11:27:09 AM
I have a big short position open and Bitfinex going down has already cost me $7000.  This is such a joke...happens OVER and OVER...get it together guys.
74  Economy / Exchanges / Bitfinex down AGAIN - just cost me $7000 on: February 10, 2014, 11:14:07 AM
what a joke.
75  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: New Mt Gox Press Release - Feb 10 - they are claiming flaw in bitcoin protocol ! on: February 10, 2014, 10:13:12 AM
Yes this is really really bad.  They are claiming Bitcoin itself is flawed.

Whether they are BSing or not, it is really bad for bitcoin in the short term, for sure.
76  Economy / Service Discussion / New Mt Gox Press Release - Feb 10 - they are claiming flaw in bitcoin protocol ! on: February 10, 2014, 10:04:34 AM
https://www.mtgox.com/press_release_20140210.html

This is probably worse news than most of us expected. Not only are they not resuming withdrawls, they are claiming it is because of basic flaw in the bitcoin protocol.

If it's not true, it's still some really bad press.

If it is true, then will hurt the confidence of BTC in the short-term, and the price of course.

This was posted below that the flaw has been discussed elsewhere recently:

77  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: 2014 would be the year of bitcoin and altcoins they said on: February 10, 2014, 08:30:37 AM
Yes last year almost no one thought it would to go 500 and it went to 1200.  This year most people think it will go to 10,000 so watch it end the year at 500.
78  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Can somebody explain how to perform day trading? on: February 10, 2014, 08:29:14 AM
I can't find any simple guides on the best day trading practices.

and yes btw, if you look on google or youtube, there are a million guides and many of them are very good.  Don't be lazy unless you want to lose all your money.

Can anyone explain simply how to profit from day trading?

Do I basically just watch the charts and buy at low points and sell at high?

Yes you have it exactly correct.  Buy low and sell high.  Now go to it and make a fortune. :-)
80  Other / Politics & Society / Re: P2P currency exchange & Escrow services now illegal ! on: February 10, 2014, 07:14:58 AM
Yes early last year, they made it illegal to sell more than $1000 BTC per day...FinCen did this.  Apparently the # is $300 in Florida.

Don't take my word for it or the others in the thread who are clueless and will say I'm incorrect... Google it yourself.

It sounds like they may have made it even more restrictive lately.
