6061  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Less than 0.3% of the world population owns more than 1$ worth of BTC on: September 17, 2019, 06:08:00 AM
Yea #stompix I hate it when they pull these statistics from their a$$. I think it is just part of the hype strategies that are being pushed by people with hidden agendas. The large majority of the transactions and also the owners of coins are coming from 1st world countries and we cannot deny that.

I think people want to create the perception that 3rd world markets are largely an untapped market for Bitcoin, but when I do contract work in these countries, I see that the infrastructure are not in place to support a thriving Bitcoin economy. <Poor electricity & Internet access etc.>   Roll Eyes
6062  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Statistics: Geez, I thought there were more females in bitcoin community on: September 17, 2019, 05:54:59 AM
Well, Google does not know who the person on the other side of the keyboard is in 100% of the times they are calculating this. A family might share a computer in the house and the son might login with his Facebook account and then his sister might quickly open up her Bitcoin wallet and then Google analytics might link that to the male statistics.  Roll Eyes

People also share accounts on the Internet and I have living proof of that, because my mother use my computer and email address for her private correspondence, because she does not want to be on the Internet. <Some older people are scared of the Internet>  Roll Eyes

Some underage Bitcoin users use their parents accounts to bypass age restrictions.  Wink
6063  Economy / Gambling / Re: FreeBitco.in - Win a Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2!! on: September 16, 2019, 07:11:53 AM
I think some people on here misunderstood my post about earning from faucets and then leaving it on FreeBitcoin to earn from the 4% interest. Yes I have earned 0.005 from faucets over the past few weeks however it wasn't just from FreeBitcoin but from many different faucets including Altcoin faucets which can pay off if that coin happens to go up like they sometimes do. I then sell them for BTC and deposit that into FreeBitcoin for the 4% interest so it can be done, it just takes time.
What people were trying to tell you is that this is far from being profitable, even if you live in a country where ~50$ for "a few weeks" may be a good income. To calculate your profit you would have to substract costs for electricity and of course your time if you would have a done regular work or eg. extra hours at work instead of collecting those faucets. Those 50$ would shrink rapidly.
Times are definitly over when collecting faucets was profitable, nowadays its just for fun in my opinion Smiley

Those "fun" Satoshi might end up being worth a lot in the future. I can remember when I started with this faucet and when they paid out 1000+ Satoshi/hour back then. People were telling me that it was a waste of time and that I will never collect enough to break even with the electricity cost I had to pay etc.... and I proved them wrong.

My computer runs 16 hours a day for normal internet activity, word processing, gaming and online Banking and none of those activities are paying a cent towards the electricity that I used for those activities, but whilst I am doing that, I quickly flipped a tab to the Freebitco.in faucet <5 seconds> and I claimed from the faucet a couple of times a day. Those Satoshi collected on my account for years and the price increased a lot since then.... I sold some of that a while back and it paid for a lot more than what I spend on electricity to acquire it.  Grin

It's a time game.  Wink
6064  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-09-16] Darkweb criminals launder cash for bitcoin at pennies for dollar on: September 16, 2019, 06:48:05 AM
It would be interesting to see how many of these transactions are done with Monero and Dash compared to Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash. I have to be honest, I saw all the FUD about the Darkweb and Bitcoin and I went in there to experience it for myself. The majority of the sites I saw was not for Bitcoin and more for Dash and some for Monero.  Roll Eyes

A lot of the sites even accept credit card payments which was strange, but I reckon a lot of these credit card purchases are done with stolen credit cards. <The people receiving the money via credit card payments must have used fake ID's or they are part of organized syndicates with fake businesses.>  Roll Eyes

It was a weird experience and the things on offer was mind blowing. <I would not touch it with a 10 feet pole>  Angry

6065  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are Virgin Bitcoins on: September 16, 2019, 06:23:17 AM
I have a virgin repair kit.  Grin  The reason why people might pay a premium for "clean" coins, would be that they do not want the "unknown" transaction history of coins to involve them in some of the "dirty" things that some of these coins might have been involved with.

So, my virgin repair kit involves Coin mixers, because with these mixers you simply erase all the "bad" transactions that might have been done with the coins that you received. You push it through the Mixer and people cannot trace the origin of those coins, so you cannot be implicated with anything, because nobody can track the transaction history of those coins.  Cool

They can't trace it for now, but that doesn't mean they won't be able to in future. Mixers don't erase history they only make it harder to discover.
I don't care what history my coins have. There's no taint in bitcoin and coins are not being rejected by exchanges yet. I will worry when that happens.

How are they going to trace it in the future? The Mixer sites do not keep logs of the mixing of the coins, so even if they identify the owners of the sites and they raid the site, they will not find any logs of any coins that were mixed by this service.  Tongue

Yes, there are some exceptions and some of these sites might even be law enforcement honey traps, but the one I am using for years now, looks to be relatively safe.  Grin  <See my signature for more details>
6066  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 1.20 BTC received with QR codes on my Street Art frescoes till 2 years! on: September 16, 2019, 06:08:53 AM
You are really gifted.. Have you ever thought of doing some merchandising in the form of some T-Shirts with some revolutionary depictions of Bitcoin vs Banks? I think a bunch of people walking around with your "message" would also make a real difference in Bitcoin adoption if you did that.  Wink

Art like this should be appreciated by many people all over the world and I would be proud to wear a t-shirt with a powerful Bitcoin message.  Cool

6067  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: List of ways to cash out bitcoin to US bank account? on: September 16, 2019, 05:58:17 AM
Anyone?  I read that bitstamp is one of the ways an american can get a wire transfer to their US bank account when not in the US.

Its been almost 2 years since you created this thread? You weren't back in the USA in that time?

The issue here is that since you want to make a new account while overseas will set off red flags with most exchanges. Because its strange for someone to create an account with an identity that doesn't match the origins of where the IP address is from. This is no different than logging into your bank account from a foreign international IP and trying to make a transfer, most likely your account would get flagged.

Like everyone suggested here before, unless you can get a bank account in your current country then try a bitcoin ATM or a peer to peer meet like localbitcoins.

Well, the problem comes in with the 2FA and the mobile telephone that he links to the 2FA. He can go back to America and then link a local mobile number with 2FA, but the exchange might pick up that he is using his account from a IP that are not in the US and then they might flag his account.

I get a notification from my local exchange when I login from another computer with a new IP address, so they do monitor this kind of activity. He might have to use a VPN service, but if they detect that, they might block his account again.  Roll Eyes

6068  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are the big merchants that accept Bitcoin payments? on: September 16, 2019, 05:47:53 AM
One of the first large retailers that started accepting Bitcoin as a payment option was Overstock. < On January 9, 2014 > The rest of the major retailers has either not accepted it yet or they accept Bitcoin payment via third party payment processors.

I think the fact that Bitcoin is still defined as a commodity and not a payment option or a currency, influences the merchant adoption in the market. These companies are audited and they have to adhere to specific rules and regulations within their country and this makes the decision a bit more complex.  Tongue
6069  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin - Friends & Family adoption - Share your experience. on: September 16, 2019, 05:39:48 AM
Maybe for me it is positive. Because my family didn't really understand what Bitcoin is, lol. Maybe neutral?

But I have this one member of family before that using Bitcoin in some HYIP before so he even borrowed money to our relatives just to put in that HYIP and boom, rekt! He got scammed and maybe in that incident, some of my family members thinking that Bitcoin is negative.

This is one of the reasons why we have to explain the real Bitcoin <BTC> to people, before they go out there to do things on their own and use a phishing site or some dumb Ponzi scheme. I know it is sometimes very difficult to change people's mind on things like this, but you have to try to protect them.

A year ago a friend of mine got into a Ponzi scheme and he bragged that he was making more money from Bitcoin than I am. I highlighted the difference between Bitcoin <BTC> and a Ponzi scheme using Bitcoin as a payment option, but he did not want to believe me. He kept on putting in more money into this and after 7 months it collapse. <He now blames Bitcoin and not the Ponzi scheme>  Roll Eyes

You should think companies like PricewaterhouseCoopers are corruption free, until you start digging a little deeper.. https://medium.com/bull-market/pwc-fights-california-overtime-class-action-but-reputation-risk-is-high-9b507e3844ac   Roll Eyes

I think one of the main reasons why they want to get involved with Bitcoin and Crypto currencies are that the whole financial system might be going in that direction and that they want to be one of the auditing companies that would be able to audit them. See this article : https://thenextweb.com/hardfork/2019/06/20/pwc-halo-tool-audit-cryptocurrency/

6072  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin - Friends & Family adoption - Share your experience. on: September 15, 2019, 08:26:01 AM
Almost all of my family members know what is cryptocurrency although they don't use it. I had mined some altcoins back in the day, at the beginning, my family members used to ask me what I'm doing. I had to explain them what's cryptocurrency etc. I didn't share with my friend much because cryptocurrency is illegal here. Some of my friends know though, whom I believe. With my presence, one of my friend started mining and had significant profit through holding till last year.

Yip, this is a good reason not to share.  I do not want people and specially family and friends getting into trouble, because we introduced them to Bitcoin in countries where it is illegal to use it.  Tongue  The other side of this is a bit more complex, because some people are using Bitcoin in their country to protect the value of their wealth.

They might live in a country with hyperinflation and the value of their currency might be dropping like crazy.. So the logical thing to do would be to park that wealth in a commodity or currency with a store of value. <Most of the countries with weak reserve currencies, will ban other currencies>
6073  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If core bitcoin community moved from Bitcointalk to Reddit then.. on: September 15, 2019, 07:03:15 AM
This forum will never just go away for the following reasons :

1. It is a treasure trove of information on Bitcoin
2. It contains original posts and discussions with Satoshi Nakamoto.
3. It is a good source of advertisement income for the stakeholders.
4. It provides for a platform where normal Bitcoin users can receive bitcoin for their contributions <Sig and Bounty campaigns>
5. It is very helpful resources for newbies.
6. It is a global platform, where people can interact in their own language and with their own people.
7. It is not a scam site. <Yes, some scams have been launched here, but the moderators act quickly when it is discovered.>

Why would a brilliant resource like this, just die?
6074  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin’s race to outrun the quantum computer on: September 14, 2019, 09:05:58 AM
Well, I think the solution is already out there in the form of SHA512.  Roll Eyes  Most processors today can handle SHA512 much easier today, so it is not unlikely that they would switch to SHA512 in the future.  Huh  They are obviously not just doing this to protect Crypto currencies, because most secure sites and even some Banking services use SHA256 today.  Cheesy

Will the change from SHA256 to SHA512 necessitate a whole Bitcoin fork or can this just be done with a normal node update? I am not a developer, so I might be asking a stupid question... sorry.  Roll Eyes
6075  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What made satoshi go for sha256? on: September 14, 2019, 08:55:50 AM
I think when a developer creates something that he wants to go global, he or she would opt to use the technology that are the most widely used at the time. Even today, most security features with most sites and services work with SHA256 and it is the tried and tested technology that provides the most stability and performs the best.  Wink

It would not have been wise to use SHA512 at the time and then having most people not being able to use it. This is why most companies are using widely used Operating systems like Windows and Android to launch their software.  Wink
6076  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-09-05] Fewer People Are Sending Bitcoin to Largest Crypto Exchanges on: September 14, 2019, 08:43:12 AM
I think a lot of this has to do with people rather hoarding their coins than having to risk trading them and losing money. After 2017 the price dropped with more than 80%, so people would rather keep their coins in their wallets than selling it at a lower price and hoping that the price would recover to prices larger than the price that they paid for it after the 2017 peak.  Roll Eyes

Some of these exchanges has also tightened their KYC requirements and this is also a huge pain in the ass, so people would rather prefer to avoid these services and going with less known exchanges without all this "red tape".  Wink
6077  Economy / Economics / Re: INFLATION IN THE UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRIES on: September 14, 2019, 08:16:12 AM
...and they make sure that they extract as much raw resources as possible from these countries and then refine or manufacture goods from this raw material and then sell that at inflated prices back to those countries. <This offsets the import and exports between 1st world and 3rd world countries>

A clear case of this, would be my nation Nigeria. Nigeria is one of the highest producers of crude oil in the world, and yet do not have the resources to refine the amount needed for the nation and definitely can not independently export to other nations, despite having discovered petroleum over half a century ago.

Developing countries would need to begin to act independently inorder to boost their economiiand livelihoods of it's citizenry.

Well, that is just part of your problem. Not to disrespect you, but I did some contract work for your country a few years ago and our company had to pay several bribes to get things done there. You will know that certain things will never get done, if you do not pay these bribes to the corrupt individuals. <Note : I am saying individuals, because not everyone are corrupt there>

This is also not something that are unique to Nigeria, because even 1st world countries have corrupt government officials and private companies paying these bribes.  Angry   It is also these corrupt individuals that are causing the problems in their own economy. <Making it too difficult for companies to operate there and printing too much fiat currencies.>
6078  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Electrum wallet - Update safely and avoid phising wallets? on: September 14, 2019, 08:04:59 AM
This is a very good thread, so I will give you some merit for the effort that you put in to compile it, but I think most "newbies" might find this whole process too daunting to simply "update" their wallet.  Roll Eyes
~snip~
Most people are just used to clicking on the "update" button for their software and the software will automatically update without any problems.  Roll Eyes
People mostly want to do easy things, like upgrading their wallets by available links inside wallets
Quote
The fact that most of these software "updates" and "firmware updates" on hardware wallets are so complex, makes it easy for lazy and newbie people to make mistakes. Wallet providers should develop automated processes to check for the validity of the software updates signature to protect their customers.
In my opinion, everything gives users automatic supports will put them under higher risks. Over time, they will become lazier, that in turn will force them under higher risks of attacks from abusers.
For example: Around ten years ago, I do believe that we all remember phone numbers very well, because we had to tap on phone keyboards in order to make phone calls. Since the technical revolution of smart phones, originated by Apple, nowadays, most of us don't remember too many phone numbers.

I would rather automate it, than having 1000's of people's wallets emptied, because they did not know how to verify a signature to validate a legitimate update. Also, when you make things too complicated, it creates a psychological barrier to entry for people who are not educated or intellectually challenged to adopt this technology.  Sad

Technology helps us to make life easier and to improve on ineffective ways of doing things. Having to remember 1000's of telephone numbers are not practical at all and you can now send a message to say 300 people in seconds on a WhatsApp group. <We have community groups, where people report security issues within seconds and criminals in our area are tracked via mobile phones with messages that are send by members of the group and forwarded to law enforcement.>   Wink
6079  Other / Archival / Re: {For Fun} Bitcointalk Crossword Puzzle on: September 14, 2019, 07:51:43 AM
Bump, I do not know if this board is appropriate, I moved it from off-topic for inactivity.

Well, if you make it "educational" then you can move it to the newbie section where you will get a lot of activity.  Wink  Let them do the research and then use some of your donations to fund a little prize for the first person that complete it.  Wink  The more experienced members can also have a crack at it, because it is just for fun.  Grin

Some people might enjoy it so much that they might even pay a entry fee to participate. It is nice of you to explore the possibility to include the Lightning Network, because it is ideal for micro payments that is needed for this.  Grin  <All entries goes into one pot, you take 15% and give the balance as a prize.>
6080  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Puzzle ... Free money to the first to solve it. on: September 14, 2019, 07:22:56 AM
The problem I have with puzzles like this is the ease with which this can be cheated. Let's take an example, someone creates a Puzzle like this and then they share the Private key with a friend (accomplice) and after a few hours or days the friend post the result and they claim the prize. The friend then gives the money back to the creator of the puzzle and they rinse and repeat the process. <with fake accounts>

What do they get out of this? Well, with a increase in the views and subscribers, the Youtube channel owner gets income and he could share that income with his friend. <partner in crime>  Roll Eyes

How do we validate that the winner is not a friend or family member? Well, it's basically impossible and that is the main problem I have with these puzzles.  Tongue

The only solution here is for you to get your ass crackin and let everyone know its real :-)

If I really wanted to "take the prize away" Im not sharing with a buddy ;-)

BUT the goal is to get more youtube subscribers ( thats why youtube exists IMO ) ... Like I said the bigger the channel, the bigger the prizes. I hope to educate myself and new users with the channel as well. Lots of people in my area still believe bitcoin is fake money. AND unfortunately there are a lot of bad actors in crypto. BUT they exist everywhere in life. They just choose to use real money now :-)

Good luck!

Well, your answer does not really address the real issue here, because you are side stepping the problem. How do you guarantee that no friend or family member gets the solution and claims the prize?

A good sign that you are not trying to "scam" people are the time that it already took to solve this. A scammer would have allowed for a few days and then quickly instructed their "partner" to claim the prize, before a legitimate participant solved it. So that is a good indicator that this might be an exception to all the scams that are out there.  Wink

Let's see if someone genuine can solve this.  Grin
