If someone wants to test that functionality, groovy. I won't, because I don't feel like buying an AntRouter, for the same reason I wouldn't buy a 21e6 dangle that points everything automatically at a single pool with no option to reconfigure.

.......

My understanding is that neither the "21 Inc Bitcoin Computer" nor the "Antminer R1" are released and shipping yet. While the prevailing sentiment is that they will both largely be "closed" in terms of configuration, how does anybody KNOW this?

It seems until we get actual documents, and/or a shipping product, it's kinda speculative as to what can and can't be done. I don't have a specific interest in either product, but it seems a bit premature to decide what they can and can't do at this time.

Even if it is closed I forsee people getting around R1's limitations.  Look at phone rooting/jailbreaking.   And I think it will not be horribly hard to modify their router since in past their miners allowed 3rd party firmware. (For example smit's firmware).  So likely a firmware will do it.

So I don't know who but i forsee someone changing some features to more like we would want them.
6142  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer R1 on: September 29, 2015, 05:44:14 PM
After electrical costs, I'm betting a Linksys N300 Wi-Fi Wireless Router would be a more practical purchase.

This really is not a entire router like the N300.  I would say this is more in the area of tplink nanos.   Basically a traveling router.

I'm a little disappointed in the on board chip.  Just wish it was clocked higher.   Also wish we could see some screens from this thing I wonder if there is anything that ties in with antpool, or hashnest.  I would enjoy having stats being pulled up by it.
6143  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Sidehack stick solo pool club on: September 29, 2015, 04:02:04 PM
I'm trying to figure out whats wrong with my stick, it was working yesterday.

{"hashrate1m": "0", "hashrate5m": "0", "hashrate1hr": "0", "hashrate1d": "0", "lastupdate": 1443529090, "bestshare": 1784472.3383183172}

Edit: Well i just rebooted the computer and re plugged the stick and now after quite a while i got a share. But weird. I'll definitively blame this one on W8. Not a single share overnight? Wtf.

I think everyone has had lot's of trouble with W8 also.

Just a thought, is W8 turning the port off in power management?

EDIT: forgot, if it turned the port off, the stick would probably show zombie.

Hmm not really, but i had another problem, W8 just lost networking, maybe the computer froze, it would not be surprising considering i'm mining with 5 GPU on it. I've downclocked the GPUs a little bit now maybe it will help.

Maybe there was some GPU mining conflicting with the other ASIC mining instance? Hell if i know, i never had this problem when i was doing this on W7.

First the Diff is 1K, it will take a few minutes to send 1000 shares at 9 GH/s.
Two, you have an hardware error. So your voltage is not correctly set. Meaning you probably lost your first 1000 share meaning no hash on the pool side.

I suggests that you use another pool that you can set the diff to 9 and debug it that way (adjust the voltage a bit)

He should not need to use another pool.  This entire thread is people who are mining compacs to that pool so we know it works Smiley.

If you need to change difficulty I believe you can do it with cgminer using: --suggest-diff number here
6144  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: September 29, 2015, 03:56:04 PM

I don't think anyone's successfully pushed a Compac to 500MHz yet, but we've gotten decent results above 425 with very top end voltage (one of Novak's small flock of stress test subjects got about 815mV). I think the only way to go higher would be to reduce the top divider resistor, which allows the pot's sweep a greater range. This is the small blank resistor near the pot, which is nominally about 35K; reducing it to 30K takes your pot range from 550-800mV to 615-875mV which should be much higher than you need.

It is a downer it does not allow you to pick pool.  I personally want to be able to send it over to the compac solo club phil has over i pools.   I do hope you can find a way to mod the R1 to allow pool choice.

The R1 shipping is also crazy.  To US it costs over half of the device cost I believe.   Which is an insane ratio.

Looks like RPI will remain king for compacs as far as little controllers.
6145  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer R1 on: September 29, 2015, 03:51:00 PM
Not only is it forced to Antpool but it's also Solo Mining / Lottery Mode. Would have probably bought one to play with if it was configurable. Guess we will just have to wait for someone to hack the code.  Smiley

I think by using the earlier link we are actually getting to a product that is not really for sale yet? If only we wanted it.  Smiley

Rich

Yea earlier one for internal it did not sell.  But it now shows it being able to add to cart on - https://www.bitmaintech.com/productDetail.htm?pid=00020150915040859863u4Bgg9SX069F

Did not proceed as I'm afraid to order with it not on main page.  Also ouch I got around 18 dollars on shipment cost when I tried to look at cart.   Almost cost of entire unit for shipping.

Shipment to the UK is actually more than the product cost. If you click to order at the moment it then shows Sold Out.

Rich

The shipping is crazy hopefully they get that worked out.  I really don't want to pay 1/2 of device to shipping.

On the point where it shows sold out do you have to confirm order?  Does it pop up after that?  I just had not seen it, but have not confirmed it either.
6146  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread sept 17th. to sept 30th Picks are closed!! on: September 29, 2015, 03:48:01 PM
Looks like Bitmain purchased BTC.com from ole homero lol..

Spooky...

At least they put it to good use. But I think their diff estimate is even worse than BitcoinWisdom's:

https://chain.btc.com/en/stats/diff

Quote
(+4.90%) 62.24 G

Unless they know something we don't, e.g. how many S7++ they are going to deploy today and tomorrow LOL

I would agree chances of S7's in mail and making this jump is slim chance.  I do think we will see a jump from orders on S7's just not to that extent.

Sadly BTC around 238 never did hit over 240 last night, which I was hoping for.
6147  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining rigs rental is that profitable? on: September 29, 2015, 03:45:05 PM
Profitable if you're lucky and have time to constantly check on altcoins... It's a bit like normal mining, there's risk involved, proportional to how much you go in.

But your paying a premium for rentals.  Normally it is cheaper to own the gear and mine yourself assuming right conditions.

Since this is in the bitcoin area not sure how much altcoins have to do with OP.  That would be scrypt and a copletly different type of mining.  It sounded like OP is talking about BTC mining.

And i you are mining BTC with rental you pay premium.  Only way you are not is if you are renting to solo mine hoping to get lucky.  But your talking about a lot of cost and risk.
6148  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Avalon 6 Vs Antminer S7, which one you will choose? on: September 29, 2015, 03:41:08 PM
300w per tera vs 250w per tera, draw your own conclusions

antminer s7 is better, but i would prefer to have a mini version of it

That is the nice thing if something goes wrong you lose 1t not 4t for a period of time.    Although having 4T+ in small form factor is nice.

We really need to know price to decide anything assuming it's real.   Without price hard to decide much.
6149  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: "Modern" home mining hardware? on: September 29, 2015, 03:38:27 PM
I have been shopping for an S3+ on eBay and there appear to be some nice deals that include a decent power supplies. Are there any good questions to ask the sellers that will help a beginner like myself out? For example, I owned a G-Blade several months ago that I purchased from someone on eBay, it worked well, but the fan made a screaming sound for the first minute after starting up. Is the S3+ easy to reset to factory conditions if the seller has changed the admin password? Or is that a potential pitfall?

No you can reset it from button if they did not give you username/pass.  But you could ask seller what IP is and username/pass when buying to make life easy.

Biggest thing I can think of is ask if it is hashing like advertised.   You could make it as simple of asking "Is only difference between this and new item cosmetic wear?" that covers a lot as far as paypal protection.
6150  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best bitcoin wallet? on: September 29, 2015, 01:15:09 PM
Electrum is the best bitcoin desktop wallet. It has all the features everyone look for. If you run a business and you need to transact every day then electrum is the right choice.

If you do this you really should move most of your coins to cold storage still.  I'm guessing the desktop for work stays on all day, and most likely surf's web so it is not a super secure environment.

Technically you could run a business off cold wallets to.  And bring them up as needed to send to whoever you need to send to.  But if many transactions i could see where this one might become a pain to do.
6151  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How earn 1BTC a year? on: September 29, 2015, 01:08:07 PM
With faucets itself you can make 1BTC in a year. But you need to stick with your computer almost 16 hours per day.

I don't know that I believe that even.  The pay is really really bad.  I always say pennies for hours of work.   Unless your counting on winning one of the "jackpots".  I guess some might possible make it with it being over 5600 hours.   But I still think each one of those hours brings pennies which is sad way to spend all that time.

How much did you say you would make per hour in your equation when you came up with it being doable in a year?
6152  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is your Advice for a new Bitcoiner? on: September 29, 2015, 01:00:32 PM
My biggest advice is if it sounds too good to be true chances are it is.  So if someone promises a amazing roi in X day's don't go for it as it would be too good to be true.

Same goes with buying something from the forum.   If it sounds to good to be true it likely is a scam.  Or in some cases like giftcards sadly a decent amount come from "carded" buys when they offer huge discounts from card value.   So you are essentially part of the crime.

So really use common sense with bitcoins.  And don't hold or invest anymore than your willing to loose.
6153  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Is it possible to run an Antminer S3 and Desktop PC on the same PSU on: September 29, 2015, 12:55:14 PM
i would not advice to exceed the maximum power of your cpu, actually i would stay below 700, it's not a good thing to reach the maximum output, your psu will be stressed all the time, and at the end it will be damaged

I would agree what OP said is just to close to limit.  It would have to be OC'ed and even then most likely running PSU high on watts.  What brand of PSU is it op?

305W left

355W: Power draw of Antminer S3 stock

But most likely you can get a decent server PSU here on the forums and run it from it.
6154  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Placing machines outside on cold winter? -20 on: September 29, 2015, 12:50:27 PM
My assumption is that standard PC/server is in the principle the same machine. The manufacturer are limiting Operating environment. If I remember well typical figures are:
Temperature operating: 5C - 35C (41F - 95F)
Relative humidity: 8% - 80%

Running in temperature below 0C will for sure increase a chance of damadge.

Part of what makes it tricky is that he want's to run it outside.  I think preventing moisture is going to be hard.  Just if air can flow through I think it's possible for a little moisture to get through.  And even a little would be bad on miiner.

We really will not know for sure until OP does it.   I do suggest he start out with a cheap miner to test what will happen.
6155  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Modifying a USB hub for extra power and "I did it!" showoff thread on: September 29, 2015, 12:45:12 PM

just to let you know, these are nasty to modify, has to get the heat-gun and iron to get the plastic potting off.

After some looking, found an image of these with the plastic cover removed:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/291548978082?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=590604172289&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

http://cdn2.goughlui.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/DSC_9492.jpg

Which looks like they would work without the mess.

Cut the digital left side off (in the pic), re-connect the trace on the right, and add the second power/ground wire's. Can even reuse the plastic cover to glue the second plug wires in place.

Hmm.. I might just grab a few to play with it doesn’t look to hard, even to splice in a secondary plug on a cable just for power.

Are you trying to just get power from 2 usb's for this or are you hooking the little dongle or to something else for more power?

You can get Y splitters very cheap on ebay.  I think it was Phil that pointed these out in another thread - http://www.ebay.com/itm/221661361513?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

They are 1.45 each.  Only thing is it took a LONG time to get.  So do not order them if you need them quick.  But order and have 2 weeks or so they are quite a bargain.  The 5 I got all seem to work good aswell.  So work as advertised.

But but but! that's not how you DIY! yeah, OK, if you want a simple plug'n'play, go for it, but ima feed 20A to 'tem stiiks!

I know Smiley was just pointing out a easy option.    And it's cheaper then a lot of DIY ones as they ship so slowly.

And you still can DIY.  If you wanted to power it from something beside other USB you could cut off the power plug in  and could hook it up to external source.

current (but inactive on sales) link
https://www.bitmaintech.com/productDetail.htm?pid=00020150915040859863u4Bgg9SX069F

$29 + shipping (on the CURRENT page link) for what it is IMO is badly overpriced.

Even if you get a major break on shipping on a bulk buy, still a waste.

Note that I don't have or use any form of wireless networking, never have never intend to, this thing might be worth more to someone that does.

The $5ish price seems to have been specifically for internal beta-testing buyers, but even at THAT price it doesn't seem worthwhile to me.

The actual "kiss of death" for me was the part about being FORCED to use the Antpool "solo" pool. That's just RUDE.

The current link DOES indicate that the Antrouter can be used to run several U3s - so the USB port appears to be a connection, not just for charging.

Is it really inactive?  It shows you can add to cart on mine.

But it is not on the page showing active products.
6158  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: September 29, 2015, 12:17:47 PM

I will chime in since I just installed a 7.65 kW system mostly to offset my electric bill from mining, however, it is completely a grid-tie system. I paid $.65/watt including shipping (bought from a wholesaler on eBay), $2800 for 2 inverters, installation was $1.10/watt (1 inverter would have worked if I went with SolarEdge w/optimizers). I had to take a break from mining when my Edison bill hit $900 last November for running about 8 TH. Not entirely sure if this system will help in ROI for running S7s, on the other hand, Edison buys back extra power @ $0.9/kW $0.09/kW..

so you spent around $15,000 for 7.65kW and no battery packs?

IIUC, that means you should get ~7kw*12h = 84kwh/day (~$8), and it will take roughly 2000 days, or 6-7yrs, to pay back the system cost assuming no surprises

as i understand, thats not too bad since solar insallations are typically advertised as around 10yrs to break even, at which point you might need to install $4000 of new panels to keep running another 10+yrs

That's why I never have been able to justify it.  It's a long term investment.  If you look at mortgage 6-7 years on a house to ROI is not horrible compared to many loan duration for a house.

But as far as bitcoin 10 year ROI point just does not fit well.  So kinda 2 different investments.  If it's all still working down the road in 10 years he will be very happy getting free electricity from the sun.
6159  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5+ is available to order, 7.722TH/S 0.445J/GH on: September 29, 2015, 12:13:16 PM
the more complicated, the more complex, will result in a machine prone to more defects....
lucky notlist3d! Grin

I did get lucky mine is still working great.   Sadly power company did a upgrade and I lost electricity during it, turns out they like to work on wires that are not live Smiley.  But if was not for that I would have hit 30 day mark of working and not having to change anything.  I think 24 day's was highest I got on getting pictures of it.

And Ferol is right about fixing these.   If you do anything even fan mod you kill your warranty now day's.  So make sure you get bitmains permission before trying to fix it.
6160  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How much can you mine at home? on: September 29, 2015, 12:08:01 PM
What's your experience with this?

 Depends on a few factors.

PRIMARY one for most is how much electric you can devote to mining.
You also have to factor in noise tolerance or ability to put the miners in a room/garage/whatever where the noise won't matter.

I think electricity price is most likely the biggest.  As if price is to high that you make no money but have a lot that could be devoted to it.

Also some countries VAT/import kills the deal.  If you have this research it and see how much it will cost.   So basically make sure you do your ROI math before buying.
