I agree with increasing the reward for the next 24 months to reduce the relative value of the instant mined coins.

The "instant mined" coins are not even an issue!  Most have been distributed these past 3 months!  I just ran my curser over the cryptsy chart since darkcoin was represented there, and the volumes have been huge.  who has been selling in such volumes, who could?  Only those with tons of coins.

Best distribution you can get.  Lots of people who don't/can't mine have Darkcoin.  They bought it.  I bought quite a bit for me, as well.  In fact as much as I could, I bought.
622  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 07, 2014, 06:51:07 AM
Relative noob here - to the long-time holders, what's your best guess on when this coin is actually headed up? It's been quite painful watching so many other coins experience significant surges over the past two months while DRK has been largely stagnant.

Yes, it's also been more stable than a lot of other coins, but could someone give a guesstimate on when DRK send comes out of beta and the price is likely to start reflecting the potential of this coin?

when the original miners finish selling off what they mined and don't want.  IMO it might take another 6 months.  If that is the case, it will buy us even more time after DarkSend is ready because no other coin could compete with the original yet inexpensive DarkCoin.

Seriously, whoever mined the original coins has either been dumping them or holding them.  I know some of the people on this thread that are huge helps, like Evan himself, CHAOSiTEC and others must have gotten a good amount, and they care about this coin deeply.  They've given a TON of coins away, I think CHAOSiTEC said over 18,000 coins himself, so you can see there that many  of those original coins were distributed.  Then there are those selling large chunks since day 1 of being on an exchange.  It won't last forever.  Eventually, the coins will be distributed, the "dumpers" will either run out, or decide to hold the rest.  Those of us with patience, will eventually be rewarded with a good increase in price, IMO. And hopefully, acceptance as a payment source by many businesses by then.

My wallet don't sync, and I'm in 0.9.1.
Where can I find the 0.9.2 wallet ? All the official links are on a 0.9.1  Sad

The number didn't change, you should be able to download what's on the first page and get one that works.  If you're using the darksend beta wallet, it doesn't work anymore, but a new one will come soon, I'm sure, if we haven't killed the coin today, LOL
624  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Darkcoin airdrop to fix first 24 hours? on: April 07, 2014, 06:36:02 AM
If our coin can survive this madness, then it can survive the name Darkcoin!
625  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 07, 2014, 06:26:31 AM
So first we changed from Xcoin to DRK coin and now another name? Christ.

I'm incredibly uneasy holding this coin given the last 10 pages or so of this thread. The whole idea of changing the name and airdrop idea is absurd. You want to instill confidence in the people that invest it in, so build from what is already there. The game-changer has, and always will be, darksend. Focus on that and build from here.

Hey. But we got ya out of hiding  Wink  Cheesy  Hello there!
626  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 07, 2014, 06:11:56 AM

A sister coin would wipe out Darkcoin, especially if we did it. So it's not a good idea.

Other options are:

1.) Renaming the coin. It keeps coming up over and over, maybe we should really consider it. Everyone start coming up with names and I'll make a voting page to gauge if our user base even wants this.
2.) The first 24 hours of the coins existence keep causing us problems, an "airdrop" could be a solution to this. We could airdrop all holders (uniquely verified) with a equal portion of coin. This coin would come from a block in the future that paid 2.4million+ coins to a specific address that I hold. We could use some kind of verification system like mastercoin (http://mastercoin-faucet.com/github-intro)
The airdrop would be a month or so into the future, so it would give users time to buy coins and become holders creating some demand. Also, we'd have a much larger market cap and the argument about the first 24 hours would become invalid.

As always, we listen to the community. If enough people complain, we'll do something...

1) The name is fine - "the general public" is never going to use darkcoin, it will be used by people who care about ANONYMITY - The general public will just stick with bitcoin, because it is "anonymous enough" for 95% of folks, and has tons of other advantages (wide retail acceptance etc)
2) The first 24 hours became a larger problem when the # of coins decreased from 84million to 22million, In retrospect this was probably a mistake... but we can't take that back now without killing the price and shaking investor confidence. The airdrop idea sounds super shady, even if it isn't.

Major changes like this should not be taken lightly.  Investors want specs that are written in stone. Major changes should ONLY happen if it's crucial for the success of the coin.  Neither of these issues meet that requirement and therefore I think should be left as-is.

Hear hear!  It's bad enough we're bickering about the name since the coin began, but this is getting crazy.  We love you Evan, but you can't fix everything.  Some things just happened.  And they probably happened for the best.

Our price is indeed depressed because there are constantly big sales of 1000-5000 darks and that's probably the big holders that got so many coins in the beginning.  But this is seriously a good thing!  This low price is allowing the coin to be distributed really well, to anyone who has heard of us until now or in the near future.  Eventually, the sell off will stop, and with the great distribution, we'll have an excellent chance at being a useful coin, which will then drive the price up.  It's actually been going super well!
627  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Darkcoin airdrop to fix first 24 hours? on: April 07, 2014, 06:04:47 AM
I just want to bang my head against the wall, LOL

Are you being King Solomon? We bicker too much, now you give us a choice to kill ourselves with?  LOL  OMG!
Boy if you don't come up with good 'uns!
628  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 07, 2014, 05:58:04 AM

Honestly i'm thinking of stepping back from my current role after the logo comp is finished. It's a pretty thankless task, lots of work, lots of criticism, and you don't get paid. And I've gotta say, my dislike of marketing hasn't changed. Tongue (I'll refrain from reposting my favourite Bill Hicks rant on the matter).

Oh LimLims, you've seriously done a fantastic job!  I'm sure we're all grateful.  Unfortunately, it's like we're spinning our wheels.  Too many chefs in the kitchen, tbh.  I think you have a good feeling for what we need.  Maybe you all can discuss it amongst yourselves and come up with a good solution, no need to put it to a vote.
629  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 07, 2014, 05:52:25 AM
Ok, so we don't spin our wheels, I'm going to start what I hope will be a brainstorm of letter "D" coin names so we can actually use what we've gotten in logo designs already:

Best ones I could come up with:

DataCoin - hey that would make sense if we sent small messages with payments?

Debitcoin - very "banking industry" sounding?

or Duffcoin Smiley

How 'bout:

Demicoin (small, lightweight?)

Distrocoin (distribution?)

Dittocoin (just think it sounds cool, LOL)

Dogecoin ... oh wait, that's taken.... well, it's better than Doomcoin, LOL

Oooooh, DragonCoin! or Drakecoin!  Don't wake the sleeping dragon in us (warning to heavy handed governments!)

Day-o-coin ('cause I'm a Harry Belafonte fan?

See what happens when Evan takes a day off?  Boy are we gonna get it when he comes home!

LOL

I'm sure there won't be any name change nor another coin.  We do have to settle on a logo and brainstorm a marketing plan.  We have a lot of good choices to choose from, and I know there are awesome people here with great ideas, so lets stop hitting this nail on the head, we're denting the wood fibers and ruining the finish, eh?  Cheesy

Why not just re-brand Darkcoin?

I can't believe there are still branding discussions going in relating to the "success" of the coin. This coin has (had?) a huge early-to-market advantage when it comes to anonymous transactions. With Zerocoin/Cash looming in the horizon, you guys really need to take a step back and look at the actual challenges to DRK, not these nonsensical naming/logo issues everyone seems fixated on.

1. DRK has to work. It's still in beta, so this is all in the developer's hands. A better understood roadmap to milestones and possible delivery dates would help.

2. Needs to be "certified" on some level by a credible "white-hat" of some sort. If some exploit or vulnerability is exposed post launch, the coin is doomed. Again, this should be already lined up and possibly be working with Evan on third-party testing.

3. Evan needs to be put in front and center at events, conventions, seminars, whatever. talking.

Why? Look at Zerocoin as the competitor. Google it. Things like Forbes come up, constant mentions of Johns Hopkins University... other incredible terms like Cryptography professor, etc.

This is what you are competing against. Any budget you have for "marketing" should mostly be spent on points #2 and #3. Everything else is useless.

Moreover, it was already discussed and dismissed I don't know why this come up again.
Embrace the name, love it and others will love it too   Wink

LOL, yes, we need to lay this to rest.  Now that I think about it, I like the #2 logo.  It gives the feel of technology so strongly, you can't think of it as something nefarious.  It's very good.

And Darkcoin is a good name, it plays against Litecoin and reflects the inability to see, as in your personal, private transactions.  That's what it was always supposed to be about, that's what we should stress.  It shouldn't kill the coin because some people don't like the name, they'll love the product!

And there is an element to trust here.  Anyone can clone a coin, but those cloners usually disappear, we have a dedicated development team that's proven themselves.  They've garnered our trust as a community, and we know they'll lead the way through any bumps in the road, pretty much without fear!  Whereas I see bitcoin dragged down by fear because they lost their leader in Satoshi Nakamoto.  We know who Evan is, and we'll not let him go, LOL.
633  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 07, 2014, 12:23:04 AM

The more I think about it, the more this idea makes sense. If Darkcoin will be a niche product because of branding, why not fill the other niche ourselves before others do, with a "light"-branded sister coin?

New publicity-friendly name, fair launch, focus on privacy. Let Darkcoin be the testbed and bring across any changes when it's stable. We're in a unique position to capture the subset of the market that are choosing not to invest in Darkcoin because of its branding, because we can implement darksend before it's open source (that is, if Evan gives the ok). I don't see that there's much to lose with this strategy. We can be sure that others will do exactly this once Darkcoin goes open source, so why not capture that market now, in a way that lets existing Darkcoin investors get in early and mitigate their risks?

I've been thinking of this, but can't figure out how to make a second coin without taking the market away from darkcoin  Undecided

However, now that we're going for 'total anonymity', or as close as is possible with Darkcoin, perhaps the lighter version can just be "hard to follow", simpler conjoin like Evan originally planned?

But then where would that leave Darkcoin?  only to serve those with nefarious intentions?  Or maybe as a main storage repository?  If the latter might be the case, perhaps Darkcoin itself could live a double life, one of "pretty good privacy" and one that's "none of your business buddy!" and one could keep their balance in either spot, depending if one is for savings and one for spending?

Or?  I mean, I don't want Darkcoin hurt, I'm invested in it.
634  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 06, 2014, 11:42:33 PM
Is it already established how many coins are needed to start a DarkSend "mixer" node? Is it fixed on 1000 or was that only an example?

If I need 1000 then I guess I should start buying slowly before more people will start to get the same idea. Tongue

Just a random thought from your post.

There are plenty of people that want to benefit financially from running a master node, but either can't afford to, can't do the technical support for DDoS or can't afford to input the time.

Is there a way to create a service for running master nodes where people with DRK can work with people that got the know-how for an agreed profit split?  Handing over 1,000 DRK takes a lot of trust and I don't think anyone would do that except in very rare situations. But a solution might bring in lots of people that would otherwise be sat on the sidelines not securing the network.

Someone was talking about p2pool and wallets being kept separate?

Well, Evan has plans for this, for securing it at least to some degree, but yes, I could see a P2pool type of setup for people who want more of a service to watch over it.  but then we'd be working off a single ip address... not sure how the nodes would be picked up by the system?

I've stopped now, but I gotta tell ya, I'm the worst at buying and selling.  last buy was Friday, and the price went way up, and of course, that's when I bought....and bitcoin, when I bought the bitcoin, it was around 480, and it dropped down below 420 soon after that as well.  Now dark is low again, LOL.

I figure it doesn't matter that much in the end, and it's a good thing to know I have no talent for telling when to buy and when to sell, so I'm a long term investor.  Hopefully I can see quality (I think I can).

Anyway, I'm bullish on buying darkcoin.  I've used up all the cash I can find (far more than I should have)  If I could dredge another 10 bucks, I'd put it into dark again.  It's been good that the price remains low.  if anyone wants to invest in dark, they really can.  If I can, anyone can!

The network hash is nuts.

Has someone put out a profit calculator that can't add up, or are they pricing each coin at $200 like me?  Grin

Only $200? All my calculations are based on $1500.  Grin

I'm also mining bitcoin, which frankly, must have a terrible return, especially when you don't have but a 2 gigahash antminer, lol

So why do people mine when it's not profitable?  Or is it profitable?  I have no clue, but I'm mining dark fer sure! LOL

By the way, I re-downloaded the Windows QT wallet and it finally synced.
Now it's 9.1.2 instead of 10.0.0 and misses the DarkSend option. Undecided (One step forward, one step back.)

More testing on Monday, so it's moving forwards, soon!

Just state that Darkcoin will keep Darksend as closed source until it reaches 100$ and has a mean over 100$ for 1-2 months.

Crypto people will not seriously use it unless it is open source.  Until it is finished and open sourced, it's not taken seriously.
639  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 06, 2014, 07:44:11 PM
Is it true, that at the moment 79,9% of the DARKCOINS are instamined (in the devs wallets) And this "Block reward": 2222222/(((Difficulty+2600)/9)^2)d  is made to f..ck the ordinary miner ??

There was a mistake made in the beginning, you can read all about it here:
https://www.darkcointalk.org/threads/the-birth-of-darkcoin.162/

In the end, yes about 1.7 million was mined in the first 24 hours, mind by whomever was there, not one person.  But please read the background.  If this bothers you, so be it Smiley

I think it's important to argue the fact that even if there was this distribution ratio none of the early adopters would hurt the price by dumping evident after this period of time since. People are in it because of usage not quick buck

Well, you can also see it as this being the reason the price has remained so low for so long, as a slow dumping is occurring.  But that's cool too because it spreads the coins to newcomers and eventually they will run out of coins to sell.  It's actually been a blessing, in my opinion, because I think we're achieving a good distribution of coins because of this mistake!
640  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 06, 2014, 07:41:00 PM
I actually think the logo's purpose is somewhat deeper. One aspect that I believe is crucial to Darkcoin's survival (once source is released) is remaining competitive against a carefully branded clone that intentionally avoids any of the "Dark" baggage. If we were to go open source right now I believe we'd be wide open to being completely dominated by a "light"-branded clone with strong marketing. Look at how well Hirocoin did in mere weeks, and it doesn't even have Darksend. Selecting an accessible, mainstream logo that avoids any dark connotations and doing some major work on branding reduces the scope for this.

I agree 100%.

I'm glad you all have veto power.
