Sounds like a good idea. I'm not sure if this makes sense though:

622  Other / Meta / Greek subforum in the 'Local' section on: May 21, 2012, 03:19:48 AM
With all the drama happening in Greece at the moment, a Greek subforum would help promote the bitcoin cause in a good way.

Background: With the eurozone countrys wanting Greece out, the local people will have little choice about the fact that their new currency will be diluted and worth little. Let the Greeks talk about what they can do about converting their euro's (while they still have them) to a currency no government can dilute. Answer: Bitcoin.
623  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [VIDEO] New Animated Bitcoin Video! make it viral! on: May 21, 2012, 03:09:24 AM
For me it's a bit too much government bashing and too little actual information.
Yeah, but you're probably a geek and think cute cat videos have too little actual information, too.

The video gets a +1 from me; effective marketing appeals to emotion, not intellect.

Agreed, great job on the video.

+1 on the video for promo and marketing
624  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin crowdsourcing on: May 21, 2012, 02:58:53 AM
Hasn't Max Keiser got a website that does this already for filming projects? I remember that it didn't look that nice however it did accept bitcoins.

+1 to the original idea though, I'd love to see something like this implemented well.
625  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Paper Notes idea on: May 21, 2012, 02:50:07 AM
The solution is to have the client print out  QR code that has more than just the privkey needed to spend the note.  It needs to have some kind of digital signature that establishes some form of identity and credibility.  It should also have a receiving address for the "change."

So here's how it would work: I can walk into the gas station, hand them a 20 btc note.  Walk out, pump my gas, and have the change sent back to embedded address.  But why would the clerk open the pump before getting confirms?

When the clerk scans my note, it automatically originates a transaction sending the btc to the gas station receiving address (eg the privkey is visible and scan able right on the note).  The note contains some kind of additional digital cert, which is either managed by a CA that tied me to a real life identity, or otherwise has escrow being held against me.

If i pull a 2x spend attack on the gas station they lose out on 20 btc, but my digital certificate would be revoked, or tainted some how.  Or, my 100 btc in escrow would be drawn on.

Isn't this essentially a rudimentary implementation of what a credit card already does?

Using your example, the bank that issues the CC is acting like a CA would - linking you to a real identity. The bank is acting as your escrow (ok... not in absolute terms, but kinda), ie you are spending the banks money first which will guarantee the transaction, however you ultimately pay the bank back.

Your theory is sound, however the problem that always stands, is the dependency on a third party - and trust. This is also where problems tend to occur as there is a conflict of interest between the security and storage of your personal information and anonymity.

I'm sure there are some posts in the Economics section about trust based banking which is essentially the foundation blocks of all currencys.

I'm interested in what constitutes 'proof of delivery'

Maybe someone has already thought about this angle so forgive me for thinking out loud...

To purchase bitcoin with paypal, a money transfer can be made, and as long as you get the user to perform some sort of double confirmation of a sending address for X amount of bitcoin. Also emailing a reciept, then you could effectively, and publicly show proof of delivery by showing the block that the transfer happened in right?

Would paypal not also accept a tickbox saying you agree to various terms and conditions about reversals?
628  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Virwox and Paypal on: May 17, 2012, 05:37:29 AM

Also, how long after a transaction is complete, does it take for a payment to become non-reversible?

Well, the generally accepted answer to that is six confirmations  Each service can set it themselves.  Most exchanges require six confirmations for bitcoin transfers, for instance.   CoinDL, a digital download service, accepts payment immediately (on 0/unconfirmed).  Others may give credit after two or three blocks, as the benefit to an attacker for that particular business (e.g., goods get shipped out to a physical mailing address) causes the transaction to be low risk.

0/unconfirmed can be sufficient for low value or high margin sales when 1.) the client does not accept inbound connections and 2.) the client explicitly connects to well-connected nodes.  That is still vulnerable to a Finney attack though, so waiting for 1 confirmation lessens the risk of a double spend.

So it really depends on what type of transaction it is, and thus is there a reason to worry that an attacker would attempt to double spend on you.

Sorry, I should have made it clearer. I mean a payment from Paypal.
629  Economy / Trading Discussion / Virwox and Paypal on: May 17, 2012, 12:52:26 AM
My understanding is that Paypal is not accepted as payment for a virtual currency, mainly because of reversals but partially as it is against their policy.

How does Virwox get away with using paypal as a payment gateway for Linden dollars then?

Also, how long after a transaction is complete, does it take for a payment to become non-reversible?

Any news?

With the market being as stable as it is, I doubt there will be any until a little volatility comes back.

Is there a volatility chart somewhere? That'll give you a good indicator as to when you can expect some return from arbitrage.
631  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I'm leaving Bitcoin on: May 14, 2012, 05:03:04 AM
In November, an investor approached me to acquire Bitcoinica. Due to regulatory concerns, I agreed to the deal and signed the agreement. Bitcoinica was sold for a good price. However, since the investor is unable to arrange for a replacement team, I continued to become the sole operator until Team Intersango took over two weeks ago. The investor let me keep all profits until late January, the official handover time. After handover, he continued to offer generous salary and performance bonus every month.

Did you not retain any share in bitcoinica? It would have been a useful way of keeping an interest in the company while enabling you to detatch from anything related to the daily running of it.
632  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Charitable bitcoin miner on: May 10, 2012, 12:41:58 AM
The concept of using idle computer to generate income isn't a new idea. It can however lead to some great PR for bitcoin. For any developers looking for a new project, why not deliver a simple executable which will let people mine for charity:

635  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Promoting bitcoin on: May 01, 2012, 01:02:56 AM
I fully agree, developing user-friendly software is a much bigger priority than promoting bitcoin at this point.

Can't argue with this.

I think bitcoin's success is already on the "inevitable" track.  There is enough investment in bitcoin businesses to keep it running.  The question instead now is "what is the fastest route to that success?"

Valid points from all. I guess the question then becomes, how can we speed up the development of this software. Maybe more backing for some of the crowd funded projects?

Do they exist yet? To answer my own question I guess they do in various arrangements, GLBSE etc...
636  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Promoting bitcoin on: April 30, 2012, 06:51:55 AM
The success of bitcoin is dependent on more widespread adoption. Word will spread over time but what we are really after is a critical mass whereby bitcoin discussion will go viral and self-promote through its use.

Thinking along the lines of marketing, I remember Firefox did a promotional piece in its glory days where donators gave money towards a full page spread in the New York Times. In return you got your name printed on the advert in a tiny font:

http://binarybonsai.com/blog/the-new-york-times-firefox-ad

Its a smart piece of marketing and for bitcoin, one which I would be happy to take part in.

I'd be interested to hear thoughts on the marketing of bitcoin and if anyone works in marketing, would you be willing to organise something like this?

If there is enough interest, we can get a crowd funded campaign like this up and running.
637  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoinica Under New Management on: April 25, 2012, 09:47:01 AM
Great news I guess. The Intersango guys provide a great service and are by far one of the most reliable brokers out there.
638  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Intersango Exchange on: April 24, 2012, 02:57:28 PM
I have a request: On the Account page where you list transactions, I'd like to see a date and time stamp. At the moment its very difficult to reconcile my trading activity without it as I trade quite frequently.
639  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: {ANNOUNCEMENT} WBX Exchange Frozen on: April 20, 2012, 04:56:57 AM
?? donation address ??

Lol to you Patrick...

I'm guessing some of the info you've found and shared you had to pay for?
640  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anonpaste accepts Bitcoin on: April 20, 2012, 04:55:32 AM
Anonymous' version of Pastebin as it is now being censored. An add free service supported by bitcoin donations.

I was trying to think of a way this would work as a poor-man's Instawallet to allow you to pass a Bitcoin more anonymously.  So instead of having to transfer a Bitcoin wallet's private key to relay funds, you get this URL whose contents will include the Bitcioin wallet's private key.

Like this:
 - Create a paper wallet and copy the private key (e.g., using http://www.bitaddress.org )
 - Fund it
 - Paste the private key into an AnonPaste.tk
 - Send (encrypts and sends to server)
 - Copy the URL

Pass the URL securely

 - Paste the URL (retrieves from server and decrypts)
 - Copy the private key.
 - Import the key (e.g., into My Wallet from http://BlockChain.info/wallet and create a spend transaction that secures the funds.)

This doesn't really have much benefit over just passing the private key itself has (except maybe for the options like having the message destroyed after 10 minutes) but let's say you wanted to include instructions in the message or otther details this way you can include the bitcoin funds within your message paste.

Sounds like a good idea, I'd be careful of the admins deleting stuff especially over a long period of time. All of the other paste sites seem to remove things once in a while. Fingers crossed, Anon won't
