621  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: how does a company get started offering products and accepting bitcoins? on: May 09, 2011, 04:39:34 AM
Hey OP, check this out: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/PHP_developer_intro
622  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Debit/Gift Card? on: May 09, 2011, 04:37:58 AM
Using a non-smart-card means you would have to trust the merchant not to just take all the Bitcoins on the card.  This works for gift cards that are good at a single merchant but it doesn't really work for generic currency.

Has anybody ever had their bank accounts emptied after paying for groceries at their local supermarket? If a store was ever caught doing this, they wouldn't be a store for long.
623  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Weird feeling- I keep spending BTC while watching balance converted 2 USD go up! on: May 09, 2011, 04:36:44 AM
One of the weaknesses I see with bitcoin right now is all the speculating on the dollar value. This doesn't help bitcoin as a currency. It needs to be spent on actual goods and services. If everyone is just in it to sell their coins what use is bitcoin besides kind of a ponzi scheme trying to leave people holding coins when the mt gox value corrects. That's why I setup BitBid. The more people using it as real money the more actual value bitcoin will have.

Is Gold simply a ponzi scheme?

You can't do anything with gold besides make electronic components and trade it as a store of value.

At present: you can't do anything with bitcoins besides make an irreversible transaction and trade it as a store of value.

I don't see much difference.
624  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anonymous on: May 09, 2011, 04:34:01 AM
I was really impressed with the job Anonymous did on HBGary Federal. Could they help to propagate Bitcoin? Could Anonymous find Bitcoin useful? Stupid question? We could always move the thread to off-topic and just talk about Anonymous.

"Anonymous" is actually how I found out about bitcoin.

I am a hardcore redditor, and there was something about the hbgary hacking voted up to the top of reddit I believe...

In the top right corner of that page was a bitcoin donations button. I clicked it, and never looked back...
625  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's the largest transaction fee you were asked to pay? on: May 09, 2011, 04:30:47 AM
I've never been asked to pay a fee.

Have you sent anything recently however? Using the latest Bitcoin client?
626  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: adf.ly is so annoying! on: May 09, 2011, 04:27:04 AM
IMO:
If you are a "cold, heartless, selfish money-grabber" (which you do have every right to be) who does not care about people, then go ahead and introduce this horrible plan into the Bitcoin community.

If you understand this fact:
Quote
warning about clicking on adf.ly links. that site is used to shorten links BUT also makes money for the person who provided the link by forcing you to view an ad before seeing actual content. this person is wasting your time and using you to make money.
~Source
Then please consider not doing the project, thank you.

Just because one bad apple spams his adf.ly links doesn't mean you have to spoil the bunch.

The greatest thing about this project would be the fact that small portions of BTC would be distributed to probably 10k - 100k third worlders (if it ever took off) and would be much more successful than the faucet in terms of distributing wealth/getting a few bitcoins for a number of reasons.

And yes, the adf.ly promotional team consists of 90%+ people living in extremely poor countries, because adf.ly pays peanuts for clicks.

I wouldn't use it personally, but there is an enormous market for something like this.

Also BTC makes the payouts of $1USD or less possible. There would be no minimum payouts with a BTC oriented adf.ly - that slogan alone would be enough to steal probably half of their promoters.
627  Economy / Economics / How Much Of The World's Gold Was Mined Before People Started To Think Of It As $ on: May 09, 2011, 04:21:59 AM
As of right now, more than 25% of the bitcoins that will ever be created have been distributed... probably to a handful of ~1,000 people.

I highly doubt that we mined a few tonnes of gold before the entire world ever thought it might be worth something? I mean... why would we? If it was worthless? This is essentially what the early adopters were doing, committing insanity.

Did the kings and queens of the time simply look at gold, think "wow i want more of this", and tell everybody it was worth money?

Is that what we're doing?

I don't know exactly what I'm asking or saying here... but something about this is rubbing me the wrong way...

I usually get quite nervous when I'm on the brink of making a ton of money though (and usually for no good reason) so maybe this is just simply my nerves talking?
628  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Most Important Bitcoin Client Feature IMHO... on: May 09, 2011, 04:14:32 AM
I just thought of a potential problem the open sourced bitcoin community might face...

How many people currently have to "ok" a release?

What if tomorrow the value of BTC jumped up to $100,000 USD/BTC and Gavin decided he now wanted to "round" every transaction down and send the remainder to his own account (like the plot from "office space").

No offense to Gavin, but most everybody has their price.  Undecided
629  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why Does The Bitcoin Server Create ~5x Fewer Connections Than Regular Bitcoin? on: May 09, 2011, 04:08:39 AM
if I were to
Have you actually tried?

Yes. I have tried. And I will try again right now to double check.

Just now... my internet connection cut out for a few minutes... I plummeted from about 40 connections (after 3-4 days running bitcoin.exe -server non stop) down to ~10 connections, and hours later I am still only at 12 connections.

Once again... I have shut down by bitcoin.exe -server and opened bitcoin.exe by double clicking on it... after just 20-30 seconds I am up to 20 connections - where as it has taken me hours to get up to 12 connections using bitcoin.exe -server

I assure you, I am not crazy!
630  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PCIe x1 capable of transmitting video or only mining? on: May 08, 2011, 11:32:17 PM
is the same. if you plug a x1 riser intro a x16 slot then it become a x1 slot Tongue

Just place the cable on the same pin on the x16 slot as it where a x1 slot.

Ok I'll try it!

Anybody know what technopagan is talking about with this then: bridge A2+A3+B1+B2+B3 Huh
631  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: my 6990s are @ 90 degrees celcius on: May 08, 2011, 11:30:09 PM
I would place the mobo on a desk somewhere, your temps will probably drop by 15 degrees celcius.
632  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PCIe x1 capable of transmitting video or only mining? on: May 08, 2011, 10:38:04 PM
i have already tested it using only 1 cable and it works fine, just remember to bridge the x1 riser and no the slot, i not sure if the pinout is 100% the same.

Can you point me to the blog post on zorinaq that shows that picture you provided specifically???

Nevermind, found it!

Edit: ahhhhhh crap... ok... I see what's going on here....

So my original question was how do I do this using a pcie x16 slot, a pcie x16 card, and an x1 extension cable. Not a pcie x1 slot to a pcie x16 card (which is what zorinaq is talking about...)
633  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PCI-E 1x Mining? on: May 08, 2011, 10:36:17 PM
If you're looking for this sort of thing without having to cut the cable or solder connections, http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=6128.0

He was asking how does one accomplish this? Not is it for sale Tongue
634  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Radeon 5830 BTC rate on: May 08, 2011, 10:34:04 PM
Well apparently a 5830 can get up to 280 Mh/s... so you are looking at around 20 days to generate 1 block of 50 BTC at the current difficulty. (Will be 30 days in a few more hours...)

So that's about 2.5 BTC per 24 hours or about 0.1 BTC per hour.
635  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: selling mining contracts 400£ per Ghps per Month on: May 08, 2011, 09:56:36 PM
with 0.14 euro per kWh (my rate) and triple 5870 (~800W including rest of system and some moderate OC) it is 320 euro for electricity itself
3x 5870 is ~700 euro, 150 for cheap mobo+cpu+ram+hdd, 150 for decent psu

that is 1320 euro (not including OS, configuration etc.) for four month

gpb to eur exchange rate is close to 1.1, so that is no too bad if one have plenty of money and not too much experience

obvious drawback is that after 4 month you will have coins and you can keep mining rig, while when contract end all you have is coins, but no one can expect vladimir to do all that for free, it ain't charity shop

while one can use diy methods, he needs to pay insurance, taxes, double that electricity cost ( air condition), internet connection with some backup link etc.
for a colocation offer it certainly isn't a bad one

I have no problem with him offering something for sale. Great, good on him for doing so.

I have a huge problem with him continually bumping his thread.

If you have something to add/change about your offer vladimir... simply edit your original post.

If you are actually offering a decent product that people really like (like this blackjack offer) then it will receive hundreds of replies (from different people) in a few days, just like this one.
636  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: selling mining contracts 400£ per Ghps per Month on: May 08, 2011, 09:50:43 PM
The purpose of the Marketplace sub-forum is for stuff like this.

The purpose of the sub forum is to sell your wares, sure.

My only problem with vladimir's selling tactics are:

- He is continually "bumping" his thread to the top of the forum just to gain more exposure, even though nobody is interested in his product. He is abusing the "bumping" ability of this forum. Any marketplace type forum usually has rules against these dirty selling tactics. He is making his thread look more popular than it actually is. I can't believe the moderators haven't given him a warning about this already..? I have never participated in a forum where this type of action was allowed. If you have something else to add to your service, simply edit the original post, simple as that...
- He does not accept BTC as payment, I thought the purpose of this sub forum was to transact with BTC?
637  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: selling mining contracts 400£ per Ghps per Month on: May 08, 2011, 07:42:47 PM
Dear vladimir, would you mind NOT spamming the shit out of the marketplace board please?

18 of the last 20 posts to this thread have been your own.

Please don't continually bump this overpriced server thread of yours. You are abusing the marketplace by doing so. If people were interested in it, they would make a post.

People, if you want to know how to setup a 1Ghps server, I will show you how to for free, simply pm me, and it will cost you much less than 1,600 pounds...

Thank you.
638  Economy / Marketplace / Re: "Backup" software, games and movies for BTC (Tor Network) on: May 08, 2011, 07:39:30 PM
Selling pirated materials? that's very low.

I don't find it evil to sell pirated works.
You're taking someone's work (scene groups), and selling it for a profit. how is that not low?

also, yay, first -1 is (i think) from moderator.

You're probably right, I gave you a +1 though for being a good bitcoiner!

So when you go buy a watch it's "very low" too, isn't it? They grab watches from the maker and add some profit just for having them there, and who says watches says anything you can buy in a store.

Anyway, this is an announcement not a philosophic discussion.

I don't understand exactly what or why he is "selling"Huh

Has nobody ever heard of isohunt, thepiratebay, or demonoid?!? How about torrents in general?

It's all free people, no idea why you would pay for somebody else to do your dirty work, it's just as illegal.
640  Other / Meta / Re: Marketplace Regulation on: May 08, 2011, 07:36:25 PM
I will be tagging forum topics with [BUYING] and [SELLING] tags to make it easier for forum users to navigate.

You are welcome to object to this policy if you feel it is a bad policy, etc.

Why don't we simply have a "buying" and "selling" section..? It will save you hours of pointless categorization.
