6243  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Beginner's Questions about Trezor/Cold Wallets on: November 18, 2021, 05:19:30 PM
If I store Bitcoin in Trezor and eventually I lost the device, can I retrieve the Bitcoion to any other wallets, including online wallets like Mycelium, using the master seeds.
You can import your seed words to any other wallet supporting BIP39 default trezor format, but it will then become hot wallet if you enter to Mycelium or other software wallets connected with internet connection.

Can I access my Bitcoin from elsewhere using my master seeds?

Example, I'm in Capetown and my Trezor wallet is in Miami, USA. How do I access the Bitcoin without the Trezor physical wallet if I needed money urgently?
Location is really not important and you can carry your wallet or seed words anywhere with your, even in your own head if you have good memory.

Since it's more like a flash drive, I guess, what happens if it got corrupted by viruses? Or any malware?
Trezor can't get corrupted by viruses because it's not connected with internet, and it's not used for data storing like regular usb drives.
However, there is chance that some keylogers and viruses are installed on your computer that can steal anything you type with your keyoboard.
6244  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mixer Detection in 2021 on: November 18, 2021, 01:23:34 PM
The problems start whn someone using the mixer is accused to do money laundering for instance and how the use of mixer can get him in more troubles. I know this is ot a CM responsability but me as a user, i think i should be aware of such a condition.
Note that this becomes a serious problem by the exchanges started enforcing identity verifications for all users, tracking becomes more easy than before.
So the real problem is not ''dirty'' bitcoins, but centralized exchanges.
They can freeze your coins and accounts, and I even hear that CZ binance is now calling for more strict global crypto regulations, and no wonder when we is hanging out with his ex boss Bloomberg.
Solution for this is to use Bitcoin directly with merchants for any purchases, or use decentralized exchanges like Bisq or P2P for trading.
If most people would use mixers, coinjoins and other privacy tools, it would make any tracking useless and coin freezing impossible, because they can't freeze all accounts.
It's going to be very interesting soon when Taproot achieves wider adoption Wink
6245  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Why I wouldn't buy Ledger Nano S ever again? on: November 18, 2021, 01:08:44 PM
I wasn't. I am just interpreting their own words "as open source as possible".
You said phrase ''certain elements of it will be kept a secret'' and that was not mentioned anywhere by trezor developers or me, so it was your own interpretation Wink
I suggest first reading the link with definition and comparison with closed hardware to learn what open source hardware really means.
I posted a video in one of my previous posts in this this thread and I am following all trezor news regarding this subject.

PS
Now let's get back to topic of ledger nano s.

6246  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Suggestions for Arduino Nano BTC project? on: November 18, 2021, 12:31:13 PM
To keep it simple, you will need to seed the device with the basic key generation logic or at least directly store them there along with the destination address. Connect it with some form of input, like a button and wifi. Whenever you push the button, say for 3 seconds, you would sign a transaction to send an amount of cryptos to your fixed target address. You can later make it customize the amount.
That sounds like interesting idea but I won't be able to make that myself without following some instructions or tutorial.

I heard from my friend about Duino coin where you can mining it using Arduino
Thanks, I saw that but I am not interested in mining any altcoins and I only have one Arduino Nano device.
6247  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Why I wouldn't buy Ledger Nano S ever again? on: November 18, 2021, 12:12:40 PM
As open-source as possible means that certain elements of it will be kept a secret.
Please don't make your own definition for open source  Smiley
Open source hardware definition is clear, they are transparent and there is no some ''secret elements'' in them, oh and you are quoting some old blog post from 2020,
and new information I heard confirmed what I am saying, but let's wait the end of 2022 and see, if we are alive and well by them.
You can't change a license just a little bit, add common clause and still call it open source like Coldcard wallet is doing with their device, and if something like this happens with Trezor I will be the first to call them out.

Quote
"Open hardware," or "open source hardware," refers to the design specifications of a physical object which are licensed in such a way that said object can be studied, modified, created, and distributed by anyone.

6249  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Got bitcoin & thinking of splitting wallet but I'm a beginner in many ways, help on: November 18, 2021, 10:26:20 AM
So how do I check my Paper wallet balance in safety, possibly an easy question for you to answer but I am worried that typing one of my keys into a site online is risky, what site do I use and how is it ok to type my cold wallets key onto an online site?
Impotant thing is to never type your private keys on any website, but you can type you public address on some blockchain explorers to see your balance, best with Tor browser to hide your IP.
Two decent explorers are mempool.space and blockchair.com (I think this even has .onion version available).
Other option is to create watch only wallet in Electrum so you can monitor your balance.

Once I find the balance can I trust what I see, i.e. can I be sure that I and I alone have that balance because it came from the paper wallet that I have in my hand? I mean what would have happened if my friend that helped me had taken a picture of that paper wallet on his phone ( I watched closely what he did so I don't think he did but that's another reason why I might want to make new wallets to know that no one else had been involved in creating them)?
You can fully trust balance that you see if you run only usingyour own node, but I would say that using  spv wallets and explorers is showing correct balance in most cases.
If someone takes a picture of your paper wallet private key, he can use it to import and send coins to any other address that he controls.
Private key is private and not to be shared with any ''friends''.

And if he had done that and then sold the coins I assume I couldnt find out anything and typing in my key would just give me a zero balance, is that what would happen?
Correct, zero balance and past transactions, so you could find what address he used to send coins.

Plus I have about Ł500 Etherum on Coinbase which I feel I need to get off there, what do you recommend I do with that for getting it off there?
Sell etherum (unusable high fees centralized junk) and buy Bitcoin, than withdraw BTC to your own wallet.
6250  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Why I wouldn't buy Ledger Nano S ever again? on: November 17, 2021, 04:39:40 PM
If you go to the Passphrase option, can you switch between letters instantly as in there is no delay between the button pushes?  I do not seem to be able to switch between more than one to two characters per second.
I don't know because I never used passphrase option in ledger wallet and I don't like it's connection with pin code.

Unfortunately however, as far as rumors go, I heard Trezor's upcoming product will also feature a closed source chip which makes me wonder how many alternatives we will really be left with in the future.
I think that your information is wrong, Trezor won't release their new hardware wallet device before end of 2022, and they are working on their own Open Source secure element with Tropic Square.
In latest interview they said that they will sell this secure elements to anyone who want's to buy them, including other hardware wallet manufacturers.
6251  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Secure Element in Hardware Wallets on: November 17, 2021, 03:24:20 PM

News update about Secure Elements, Microchip Technology is migrating their old secure element ATECC608A to the new version ATECC608B.
ATECC608A chip is still used in some hardware wallets like ColdCard Mk3 and Passport, while Bitbox02 recently switched to new version ATECC608B.
Same chip was previously used in M5Stack Core2 ESP32 Development Kit for AWS and it's unknown if they updated it.

Differences between ATECC608A and ATECC608B:

- Low-Frequency I˛C Issue fixed (that can cause data corruption and device responding incorrectly)
- Device Revision Differences (package marking on Microchip security devices does not identify the device type)
- Execution Time Differences (after implementing new security enhancements)
- Enhanced Temperature Range (extended range of -40°C to +100°C)
- New Packages (3-pin RBH contact package)

Both of this chips are nearly identical in every other way and devices should be able to replace them fairly easy, but problem is that they are hard to find on market because of chain supply and chip shortage issues.
It is still unclear if this flaws in ATECC608A could affect ColdCard or Passport wallet or if that can be somehow exploited, but manufacturer strongly recommended converting to ATECC608B to enhance overall system security.

6252  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [LockBox-LBX] Created a Hardened Linux OS for Crypto Hodlers on: November 17, 2021, 02:42:38 PM
To be promptly listed and to buy a tiny bit of advertising space was roughly $220. Thought this to be extremely worth it as it also  serve as direct support for distrowatch.
I don't know if there is any better and free alternative website for distrowatch, many people think they are a bit bias with their rankings, meaning if you pay more you get higher on their list and many wonder if MX linux got on topo like that.
Good thing about distrowatch is that they are accepting Bitcoin donation.

8 GB of system memory (RAM)
Running on a older laptop with equivalent specs shouldn't be an issue, however the experience may be a bit painful. Running opensnitch and a full node wallet can quickly chew up resources.
Oh there is no way I could run that on my ancient laptop that has only 1 GB system memory  Cheesy
6253  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Why I wouldn't buy Ledger Nano S ever again? on: November 17, 2021, 02:07:52 PM
Dependent apps - DOGE, BCH, Dash, Digibyte, Zcash, BTC Gold, etc. are all 2 KB each.
That makes a total of 76 KB with 7 apps installed.
That is because all those 2 KB apps are just clones and forks of original coins, for example all you mentioned are forks of Bitcoin, and ETC, BNB and other crap are forks of Ethereum.
My point is that their main Nano S selling point for supporting bunch of altcoins does not stand anymore, until they fix this or upgrade with some new device and I think they are working on something like that.

However, there is a negative side to it.  My Nano S has been moving awfully slow after I updated it to one of the latest firmware versions.  I can not remember precisely, but I think it was around six months ago.  I used to navigate really fast through the menu before, but they seem to have added a button input delay which makes the Passphrase setup a pain.  Takes years now to fill in the Passphrase, while before I could have done it within a minute or less.
It does take time to import passphrase but I never before heard someone having this issue with ledger slow speed, and installing latest firmware could fix your issue, but there is always a chance this could break your device and unusable.

Deleting and re-installing apps every time is just an unnecessary waste of time that could have been avoided from the start.  I also do not like that I have to go through Ledger Live every time I need to manage Ledger's apps.  There is no Tor option, Ledger Live is at least partially closed source as far as I am concerned and so on.  Not worth it.
I think that their model with separate apps for each coin also have some security flaws compared to other hardware wallets, and it's just a waiting ticking bomb.
More apps you have it creates more problems and you can't really have Bitcoin only firmware, even if you don't install any other app they still exist in background.

The customer data leak put an end to any of my potential future Ledger orders.  That was a clear sign for me that they are not trustworthy and I shall steer away from their products.
That would be enough for anyone to stop buying their devices, but I guess people only learn slow and the hard way.
6254  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Staples Center to be renamed Crypto.com Arena on Christmas Day!! on: November 17, 2021, 01:43:57 PM
Crypto.com obviously made a lot of profit when they can hire actor Matt Damon for their commercials and invest bunch of money in sport clubs and arenas, but I am not sure how this can benefit Bitcoin in any way.
They are promoting custodial wallet with earning small interest, with mandatory kyc and offering payment cards, but that can only mislead many people about real value and importance of Bitcoin.
Other thing they promote is their own token and blockchain they call fully decentralized, but in reality it's not really decentralized.
I understand this is their business model and they want to be profitable, but I don't like it personally.
6255  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are implications of total satellite destruction on Bitcoin? on: November 17, 2021, 11:23:04 AM
What could be implications of this? Will we still have internet access?
This is not the first or latest satellite to be destroyed, and internet worldwide connection is made with bunch of underground and underwater cables and has nothing to do with any satellites and I don't know why so many people assume something like this.

2) How will it impact Bitcoin?
it can only affect Blockstream and other satellites if something hits them, but it's unlikely anything like this will happen.

3) What would be best strategy to prepare for a world with impassible space debris surrounding orbit? Which assets will be a safe haven?
I think you watch a lot of sci-fi movies and you can't do anything about that, so better try changing some things in your life that you actually can change.
Use Bitcoin, stop trusting your government politicians and don't blindly obey them or their rules and regulations.
6256  Other / Meta / Re: Wrong information about BitcoinTalk history on Wikipedia on: November 17, 2021, 09:48:33 AM
Whoever edited that had the clear intention to discredit bitcointalk.
Notorious fake humanrightsfoundation was making some of this wikipedia pages and edits, and people may remember him for his multiple ban evasions from bitcointalk forum because of his death threats.
He is also obsessed with theymos and he tried to extort and blackmail him several times.
6257  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [LockBox-LBX] Created a Hardened Linux OS for Crypto Hodlers on: November 17, 2021, 09:32:46 AM
Just a follow up, we've been officially listed on distrowatch and paid in BTC of course Wink  Thanks again for the suggestion!
Nice work, bit I didn't know you have to pay to be listed on that website... if it's not a secret can you tell us how much they charge for this?

I see that ISO size is around 3.4 GB but I am wondering what are the minimum system requirements (RAM/CPU) needed for running LockBox Linux, and is it possible to run it on some old laptop computer?
6258  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: latest Bitcoin-Only firmware version for Cobo Vault on: November 17, 2021, 09:05:37 AM
Cobo hardware wallet does not function anymore and it's not supported by Cobo company, but developers who worked on this device created new wallet called Keystone and they have bitcoin only firmware.
If you still have Cobo device you can try to refund from old company (if it is stil availabel) or buy new Keystone device with 50% discount (if you have proof that you purchased Cobo before).
Note that once you update Keystone firmware to Bitcoin-only, you won't be able to revert back to multi-coin version.
You can find more information on this page, and ask them for help:

6259  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Binance vs Kucoin vs FTX... Which to go with (KYC non issue)? on: November 16, 2021, 05:14:39 PM
FTX and Binance are working together and I even think that CZ invested big money in FTX exchange, so there is not much difference between them,
but FTX does have lower (or free) withdrawal fees and you can still use it without any verification with up to $2000 daily withdrawal.
For using cash however you will need to do kyc verification.
