641  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Any UK Quad GPU miners here? Advice needed on: June 18, 2011, 04:57:33 PM
Hi Guys,

Looking to setup a small Quad gpu mining rig for the fun of it and could use some advice (UK miners would be easier due to sourcing but all help is really appreciated). I have an E6750 Core2Duo CPU and some DDR2 RAM already so would ideally be looking for complimentary components. So far, with my very limited knowledge, I believe these system components would be best:

*Corsair Professional Series Gold AX1200 High Performance 1200W Modular Power Supply (CMPSU-1200AXUK) £209.99
* 4x 5830 GPU (already sourced)
*x48 Motherboard
*GPU Risers?
*Dummy plugs?

I will be going caseless but do not have a clue about sourcing the correct risers, an adequate x48 board or the dummy plugs and have went with a 1200w PSU as the 1000w alternative is only ~£14 cheaper (Corsair HX 1000W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-1000HXUK)).

Can anyone shed some light on the unknowns/ and if possible sourcing? Would really help me out, and would be more than happy to send a BTC or two as thanks when I mine them

 Thanks for your time,

[edit] just fyi, have successfully setup bitcoin mining (solo&pooled) on my main computer (6990) but it crashes whenever I run BluRays etc, so cannot use this - as my system is in use all day long for entertainment

Ok, try newegg, or tigerdirect for the components, or try a local dealer or something. Those components should be fine, but what CPU you going to get? (only need a low end one). Run linux, then you don't need to spend the extra money on dummies. You can grab the risers from here. And just look on gigabytes website or something for a adequate motherboard (with enough PCI-E slots).
642  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: worth it to build a mining rig now?? on: June 18, 2011, 04:53:32 PM
I would put in
1x XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850
1x Sapphire Radeon HD 5850
, and the total would come to about 600.
Do you think if i ordered these components and build the pc i could return my money by the end of summer?(3 months)

You'd get about ~750mh/s with them.

And I doubt it.

644  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: GPU-Mining with Ufasoft miner on: June 18, 2011, 11:29:53 AM
Hello everyone,

According to this article, the Ufasoft miner is supporting GPU-Mining through the CAL-API. I've got a HD 3850 and since it doesn't support OpenCL, I thought this would be an option to get my first BTC. But for some reason the miner won't find my GPU. No matter if i deactivate the use of a GPU with the "-g no" parameter, I always get the same amount of Mhash/s. Installing the ATI Stream SDK 1.4 didn't change anything as well.

Does anyone have the same problem or knows how to fix this?

I get 3mh/s on my 4500 series. Don't even bother.
645  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trojan Wallet stealer be careful on: June 18, 2011, 10:11:25 AM
Possibly, but it needs a propagation method and a new C&C server or destination address since that's been blocked. Its an arms race I agree.

Keep your wallet encrypted and only decrypt for transactions, use TrueCrypt.
These stealers typically get run once (bound to a legit application) and then exit and never run again. They only need to steal your wallet once. So no C&C is involved.

Yeah, he's thinking of a RAT.

648  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Diablominer Pool and Solo mining question on: June 18, 2011, 02:57:37 AM
I figured out the bitcoin client problem. I just had to download the latest revision. I'm still only hashing at ~400 Mega hashes/sec. Some help would be nice...
You need to run 4 different programs, as 6xxx are 2 gpu's (pretty sure), and you have 2 of them.

650  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Linux system administration - 5 BTC/half a day on: June 18, 2011, 02:13:57 AM
I'm an experienced GNU/Linux system administrator who can help you set up the software part of your mining rig, including in "unusual cases". Well versed with NFS, minimal linux distributions, headless setup, I work remotely by SSH, mostly on debian-based distributions. For 5 BTC you will have me for half a day, and in chat, to help you with your setup.

I also do general system administration, but I would like to discuss your problem with you first. PM me your email to start a discussion.

PM me, we can figure something out Smiley

Would you mind adding BitClockers to your pool list?

pool.bitclockers.com 8332

If you add JSON support for stats:
Pool Stats : http://bitclockers.com/api
User Stats : http://bitclockers.com/api/APIKEYHERE

Thank you Cheesy

I will IF I continue this, tbh it's so buggy it's not worth it. I'll try and work it out soon but don't get your hopes up.
652  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need Help Switching to Linux on: June 17, 2011, 04:22:15 PM
Joel,

Thanks for the great info - you answered all of my questions.

I do have a cheap never-connected-to-the-internet netbook that I use to generate virgin Bitcoin wallets.  I encrypt (AES256) the wallet files, then move them back to my main PC - then I back them up all over the 'net.  I send coins to those virgin addresses and verify the transactions using BlockExplorer.  When it's time to spend, I'll use an Ubuntu live CD running the Bitcoin client.

So, that solved the Bitcoin security problem, but after trying Ubuntu, I was quite impressed.  So now I would like to switch over to that as my main OS, with Windows in a VM.

Actually, one more question, if you don't mind.  To create the Windows VM, do I need to buy a brand-new Windows 7 DVD and install it into the VM, or is there a way to get a VM already set up with Windows 7?

You need a disk.
653  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need Help Switching to Linux on: June 17, 2011, 03:43:22 PM
I am a long-time Windows guy who is interested in switching to Linux (Ubuntu, in particular) for security purposes - in particular, running the Bitcoin client.

I cannot abandon Windows altogether because one of my ventures involves writing Windows software using MS Visual C++.  And there are packages that I like to use, like Adobe Premiere, that won't run on Linux.

I'm thinking of installing Ubuntu as my main OS, and then running Windows as a virtual machine, probably using WMware.  Does that sound like a good plan?

I would prefer to run Ubuntu inside Windows, but then I think I lose a lot of the security that Ubuntu provides.  But I don't know enough about this topic to make a good judgement.  Also, can Wine be easily used, instead of Windows in a VM?

Thanks.

Just dual boot, you will have an option when your computer boots of which OS to boot into.
654  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bandwidth Usage of bitcoind on: June 17, 2011, 03:42:27 PM
What is the bandwidth usage of the bitcoind service?  I am looking for an estimate of idle bandwidth usage and the bandwidth used following each of these JSON calls to communicate with the Bitcoin network:

getbalance
sendfrom
move
getnewaddress

If there are any configuration flags I can set to minimize idle bandwidth usage, that would also be helpful.

Thanks!

Very little.
655  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Secure Wallet Service - would you use it? on: June 17, 2011, 01:49:14 PM
Hello everyone and welcome.  I'm thinking of starting an online secure wallet service.  Basically, the current Bitcoin architecture is fine, but it has some serious security flaws.  As we've seen lately with "allinvain" losing 25,000 BTC and the trojan that steals wallet.dat files, people need an easier way to secure their wallet and prevent theft of all their coins.

What I'm proposing is a secure website where anyone can create a Bitcoin wallet.  It is stored in an encrypted format on a server, and can be accessed from any web browser.  Whenever you want to send Bitcoins from your wallet, you need to authenticate with a password that you choose, and a text message is sent to your cellphone, which you type into the website.  This 2-factor authentication is more secure than most online banks and ensures that even if someone hacks your computer and captures your password, they still can't transfer funds out of your wallet.

To clarify - this would not be a Bitcoin bank.  The wallet belongs to you and you alone.  Nobody is going to lend your Bitcoins to other users like a traditional bank.  This is just a secure wallet storage facility with 2-factor authentication.

I plan to fund this project by charging a small transaction fee for sending coins - something like 0.05%.  I realize Bitcoin was designed to be a currency without transaction fees, but there is a cost to send the text messages and designing a website that is secure is not an easy challenge.

Would anyone be interested in such a service?

No offence, but noone is going to trust you with only one post :\

Im curious what the best/most popular mining gui's are at the moment? (Im using GUIminer)
There's really no other alternative other than BitMiner (which I might add, is VERY buggy) and maybe phoenix rising if you use phoenix.

i believe i am the exception when it comes to people who use windows, but i have:
a) never used virus prevention program
and
b) never had a virus.

practice common sense when downloading and using software on a windows machine. this should be your credo.

if you are really worried, you should read and follow the instructions given on another post about "how to secure your wallet".
basically you create a new "savings" wallet on a known virus-free OS and back it up. you should only SEND money to it, and should only ACCESS it from a known virus-free os.

p.s. i have a program that will generate 50382 FREE BTC! PM ME FOR LENK TEU DOWNLOEDS!9

I doubt that, very much.
