641  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon A10 series announced on: March 29, 2019, 03:49:23 PM
I've been wondering since the SP3x days how long it was going to take people to realize long tubes don't cool very well. Looks like more than just Bitmain are noticing.

Fuzzy, I'd be surprised if the main regulators on most recent miners hit 94% and above. High voltage is good for high efficiency, but 45A in a single phase really isn't, considering two of the main sources of loss in a buck increase with current squared.

Unless their PSUs are built very cleverly, going to an integrated PSU with no board-level regulation probably means all boards run at the same voltage. If that's so, the entire machine, instead of an individual board, has to run at the level of its weakest chip. If they do have separate independently-controlled rails per board though, that's pretty sweet.

Two chips on one stick.
643  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Now that usb sticks are being sold by sidehack here is a new usb hub thread. on: March 22, 2019, 02:20:03 AM
On the black hub, I believe the 6/7 regulator also feeds the hub controller. If something went wrong with that, it'd drop out.

Not sure what would have gone wrong that a power-cycle wouldn't fix, especially at only 175.
644  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Release new 7NM Chip and Antminer S17 & T17 on: March 19, 2019, 03:32:09 PM
Announced is more accurate, since as far as we know no working models are operating or have been delivered to anyone.

The difference between "discussion" and "argument" is also subject to semantics.

Maybe we should move back to the topic proper?
645  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Release new 7NM Chip and Antminer S17 & T17 on: March 19, 2019, 01:08:23 PM
I never said it was shipping or being sold.

Then how do you define "released"?
646  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience NewPac Stickminer Official Support Thread on: March 19, 2019, 02:02:09 AM
First you should contact BitMinerJoe for advice, and look over the board (specifically in the bottom right corner area) for missing or broken parts. Also make sure your USB port doesn't suck.

PCIe, if the cables are well-made, can run way the heck over spec. Even an 18AWG cable should be good for 150W, assuming the power supply behind it is solid.

VH's driver maintenance is so good, it'll work with every GekkoScience miner at the same time.
648  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Now that usb sticks are being sold by sidehack here is a new usb hub thread. on: March 17, 2019, 06:10:34 PM
Oh right, 2Pacs. 300MHz is about the top-end for 2Pacs, but that hub should be able to do it provided you keep them cool.
649  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Now that usb sticks are being sold by sidehack here is a new usb hub thread. on: March 17, 2019, 05:33:37 PM
It should be enough to run all six above 500MHz.

Look in the first post of this thread.
651  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcing GekkoScience's new USB stick miner, the aptly-named NewPac on: March 15, 2019, 07:14:02 PM
Okay great, but that doesn't have much to do with the specifics of driver implementation.
652  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcing GekkoScience's new USB stick miner, the aptly-named NewPac on: March 15, 2019, 02:27:49 AM
I think there's a known issue with enabling AB on a non-AB pool. It changes something at the protocol level so it won't even connect properly. Not sure if that's exactly what you're seeing but it could be. Check to make sure your pool supports ASICBoost.
653  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcing GekkoScience's new USB stick miner, the aptly-named NewPac on: March 15, 2019, 12:20:49 AM
Won't start, or won't connect to your pool of choice?
654  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience NewPac Stickminer Official Support Thread on: March 10, 2019, 06:00:02 PM
I don't know if it's intrinsic to 16nm or something about the 1387 architecture, but these chips are very susceptible to thermal runaway. Take a look at VH's power charts in the first post. The moderately-cooled 200MHz power draw is about the same as the 100MHz uncooled. The BM1384 2Pac worked better (more stable at least) when running a bit hot, but the BM1387 really love the cold. We had to set the stock speed down to 100MHz on the NewPac, even though it's capable of so much more, because of the heat risk.
655  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience NewPac Stickminer Official Support Thread on: March 10, 2019, 03:21:17 PM
Really hope you had a fan on it at that speed, otherwise it probably burned the chips up.

Well I guess it's not much worse than everyone here mis-using the term "ROI" for freakin' ever. Return On Investment is a continuous process (usually described as a percentage, or fixed value, per unit time), and what most people are trying to discuss is the breakeven point (where the accumulated returns equal the initial investment).

Sorry, I just woke up from a nap, and the only thing I remember from the dream I had was the line "I'm not angry at you. I'm not angry at all. It's more like disappointment. I'm very familiar with disappointment; it's... nigh perpetual."

Regarding the initial question, remember the first rule of any venture: don't spend more than you can afford to lose.
657  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Do Bitcoin miners care about renewable energy? on: March 09, 2019, 07:26:21 PM
People are, on average, having fewer kids now than they used to. It's just now most of them survive to adulthood instead of three fourths of them dying off due to malnutrition, accidents or preventable diseases.

Though now one of the main killers of children globally is manmade pollution, mostly from toxic air and drinking water.

Fortunately short-term profit, not survivability, is the only metric for success in America so we'll just keep cashin' in no matter who we gotta screw over. Why else would we elect a billionaire crook to President, and then let him put a petroleum lawyer in charge of environmental protection, and a petroleum CEO in charge of foreign affairs, and a coal man in charge of national parks? Certainly not for any kind of long-term maintenance and prosperity.

Half the reason I'm shutting down my hosting this year is because I can no longer justify the operation running entirely off coal power. Maybe I'll put it back together in a few years if I can get a decent renewables infrastructure set up, but not before then.

Please tell me I'm not the only one here whose linguistic sensibilities throw up just a little bit every time the word "hodl" is used intentionally. I know it's become an intrinsic cultural element of this industry but gosh dang is that a stupid word.
659  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Do Bitcoin miners care about renewable energy? on: March 07, 2019, 12:31:38 AM
Not to mention lead, uranium, arsenic...
660  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcing GekkoScience's new USB stick miner, the aptly-named NewPac on: February 28, 2019, 07:14:08 PM
The one I just received in the mail was cranked all the way up, and quite obviously heat-damaged with a lot of discoloration on the PCB.

Leaving the voltage at stock and using a fan will prevent this. Taking better care of your stuff means not having to replace them all the time.
