6541  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Divisibility Past 1 Satoshi on: November 15, 2021, 11:18:52 AM
We can always use other bitcoin denominations like millisatoshi (msat) that is often used in Lightning Network.
1 sat is equal to 1000 msat
1 msat is currently worth around $0.00007

One more possible solution other than using LN and msat is using some second layer or sidechain solution that could have even smaller denominations.
It looks crazy for us today, but 1 sat could be worth much more in future if (or when) big hyperinflations happens, and that is not so hard to imagine with non-stop working money printing machine and corrupt politicians in power.

Is this Noah wallet going to be available worldwide or just in United Kingdom and few other selected countries?
I noticed that your twitter account is saying that you plan to put Bitcoin into hands of one billion people, but with custodial wallet like yours this is not really the case because you are holding all private keys.
Website is lacking information and I can't really speak much about this wallet until it's released.

6544  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: November 14, 2021, 03:01:28 PM
What I don't like about Keystone is that it's so large to be honest, so that's purely subjective. I don't really mind if Passport was made in China as long as it was flashed after being shipped to the US and it has the build verification procedure during setup. Also that it's probably running a full OS like Android (or is it not? it looks like it visually..) poses a larger attack surface than something with a lighter firmware.
It reminds me on smartphones, it is bigger than other wallets and I can criticize all hardware wallets, they all have some flaws including Keystone and Passport, but I think they are both good devices.
After checking the size of Keystone 112mm x 65mm x 18mm I see that it's almost the same size as old Nokia phone 3310 with 112mm x 65mm x 18mm.
You can see size comparison with other hardware wallets here:

6545  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: November 14, 2021, 02:23:26 PM
You keep saying that Coldcard is not open source, it is; it's just not FREE open source. They have a github and it can be reproduced.
Open source has nothing to do with reproducibility and I can find you a bunch of open source and wallets files that can't be reproduced, even some well known OS wallets can't be reproduced.
Definition is clear, you can find it on Open Source Initiative website and CC aka Common Clause that is NOT open source license:
Please read this sources:
https://opensource.org/osd and https://commonsclause.com/

And it's not just the energizer thing for the power it's the entire way they are doing it. The entire "designed to work with lithium AAA" is just bad power configuration. And "If using rechargeable, constant voltage lithium AAAs, Passport's battery indicator may not be accurate."
Dude let me tell you something, most batteries starting from AA to ones you can find in electric cars are Lithium based.
And that 9V hack thing you are doing with Coldcard wallet is only possible with Coldpower adapter that you need to buy from them for $25  Tongue

For less money Keystone come with a rechargeable battery and a fingerprint sensor and a big screen for us older people :-). For even less money you can get the base model that does not have the rechargeable battery / fingerprint sensor.
Yeah Keystone has a nice big screen and it's expected to be little cheaper when it's 100% made in China, compared to Passport that is manufacture in United States.
If you like stuff made in China, go for it, and with current inflation and money printing in US, $200 already worth much less than last year and it will probably be much worse in near future.
6546  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: November 14, 2021, 01:05:41 PM
I still think it's too high a price point. But that's just me. I know I'm cheap. And don't get me wrong I Will never say a business should not make as much money as they can for as long as they can. But that does not mean they are going to get my money.
Let's compare Passport current $199 preorder price with other popular hardware wallets.
Trezor Model T is around $200 depending on your location, they announced possible shortage of devices soon, and it doesn't have secure element chip.
Ledger devices are around $70 and $135 plus shipping, but I would never buy this closed source titanic hardware wallet.
Coldcard Mk3 is still around $130 but it's not open source anymore, and it will be deprecated soon and stop production because Mk4 is coming out soon, and I am sure it will be more expensive.
Cobo is now rebranded to Keystone and price is around $170 and Bitbox02 wallet is around $135, so I think that Passport price is decent and nobody is forcing you to use Energizer batteries.
6547  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Who are the top non-KYC requiring exchanges and P2P? on: November 14, 2021, 12:19:29 PM
I believe Localbitcoins used to be the top when it came to p2p but they now require KYC. Who took that spot?
Alternative options that work in similar way like localbitcoins but without KYC are localcryptos.com and hodlhodl.com.
All other centralized exchanges have some limits if you are not verified and they can freeze your coins at any time, so you are taking a risk every time trading there.

6551  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: AirGapped Hardware Wallets on: November 13, 2021, 02:07:06 PM
My point is the interface; it can interface with phones through the camera, laptops through camera or SD and finally even desktops without webcam through the SD card. This is highly versatile. And password entry is much faster through the keypad than through the BitBox touch menu.
There is a saying that everyone praises his own horse, and I think that is the case here with Bakkum indirectly praising his own wallet.
I think that Bitbox02 is very good open source device, but it's far from perfect and I personally don't like direct USB connection without cable
because I can't use it properly on my desktop computer and I need cable extension, or to use it on my laptop.
If I had to choose wallet with USB connection or airgap, I would use airgap option in 99%

I will write reviews about both and both are great products in my opinion, but Bakkum's article is disingenuous.
I don't know if you ever used Coldcard hardware wallet but I would be interested to hear some comparison Passport vs Coldcard vs other wallets.
Thanks.
6552  Other / Meta / Re: Proposal: Rename the "Press" board to "Spammer of the Month" board on: November 13, 2021, 01:52:47 PM
I don't even visit Press section anymore and I would be more than happy to see it closed and moved to archive.
Bitcoin Discussion section is now full of news, press and bunch on nonsense, and nobody posted anything in Important Announcements for years, so I don't get it why it still exist there.
I think we need a major cleanup in forum, but I guess that is not coming with new forum software  Cheesy

Come on folks. Give the mods a break. They're too busy banning users at scammer's behest so surely they don't have time for Press board plus they certainly most definitely can't keep track how many times the same user is reported.
SCAM is not moderated in this forum, but moving of topics is and it is punished by death ban by hanging, even if that is not written anywhere in the law rules, but if you pissed off the judge mod than you need to suffer.
I know much worse cases of breaking forum rules and member didn't get banned.
6553  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Why I wouldn't buy Ledger Nano S ever again? on: November 13, 2021, 01:22:15 PM
It seems that their latest firmware has also increased in size. I read a bunch of old reports on Reddit that they had 156 to 160 kb of free storage for the apps.
Yeah, developers claim they rewritten apps and everything else from scratch to enable reverse compatibility for future updates.
If you ask me this is a poor man choice for a hardware wallet and classical used car sellers scheme.

In addition to that, there's one user who's saying he/she got a crack when it wasn't in use
Plastic could happen with plastic because of cold/hot temperatures and depends how long he used ledger before the crack happened.

I did update the Bitcoin and Ethereum apps yesterday and was surprised when I noticed that the usual "update all" button was greyed out. Couldn't figure out why until I noticed the difference in the app sizes. I had to uninstall a third app I had to update those of BTC and ETH.
They never announce anything when size increases and they leave it for customers to get ''surprised'' and first post about that issue.
It's totally misleading that Ledger writes on their websites how Nano S is supporting 1100+ coins and app to 6 apps installed on your device, but in reality you can't install more than 2 or 3 apps.
6554  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Trapped in Cold Storage on: November 13, 2021, 12:51:21 PM
You say QR codes from 2013... I doubt people used them so widely 8 years ago for anything related with Bitcoin.

There are some program you can use on offline computer to read QR codes (example CoBang for Linux), but this won't help you a lot if code is encrypted and with password.
6555  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [List] Atomic swap tools and exchanges for Bitcoin (work-in-progress) on: November 13, 2021, 12:26:49 PM
And I have a more specific question: is there some real atomic swap software that can do atomic swap beetween BTC and USDT (and vice-versa)? Or is it technically infeasible because the two coins use differente algorithms? If if's not possible, is there some stablecoin that can be swapped with BTC ?
I don't like Tether and I wouldn't use it for holding any funds because it can be frozen by central authority, and regulators are probably going to ban it sooner or later.
Liquality extension supports this atomic swap, but volume is low and you would probably pay extremly high fees for ethereum network transaction.
AtomicDex is offering atomic swaps but currently there is volume only for USDT on binance chain if you want to swap with BTC, but you need to have some BNB coin for this transaction.

Nothing wrong in advertising anything in bitcointalk forum but not in this shitty way.

You can try investing in a cold wallet, Krypto Keepsafes is one of the better cold wallets going around now.

I would suggest you to go for a cold wallet as I feel a cold wallet is more secure since it's not connected to the Internet. So, there's less chance of hackers getting to your stored crypto!  Smiley
Also, a cold wallet can be used to as a form of long-term investment with crypto collectables being the current rage. I tried the crypto collectable from Krypto Keepsafes and found it to be quite nice design-wise and in terms of security. You can check it out.

Who's jerry007?
jerry007 is one of the members of my personal ignore list club Grin

It came without such foil though Shocked Nokia case actually sounds like a good idea, but keep in mind the Passport is way smaller than it always looks. It's really tiny; many people criticizing it being large and bulky clearly haven't seen it besides other items or even tried it in person. So it might be too loose in such a phone case.
Yeah I know, I was joking about that and I saw size comparison picture with other hardware wallets last year.
Paradox is that today smartphones are usually bigger than early mobile phones, and they track your every move much better.

6558  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Why I wouldn't buy Ledger Nano S ever again? on: November 12, 2021, 02:25:17 PM
How many years is the average for "normal use" after which it's expected to become difficult to read?
People who purchased Nano S devices in 2017 are starting to see first issues now, that means cheap display is probably meant to last 4 years more or less.
Ledger warranty is two years and they are not responsible for your device after that, but like I said you can fix this ordering new display for $2 or $3, don't waste any money purchasing new ledger.
However, there could be an issue with their new closed source firmware breaking devices, like this guy reported few days ago (post is being downvoted on purpose):
Quote
I have been in crypto for a while and trusted Ledger. I bought a Ledger Nano S back in 2017 and after a compulsory firmware update the screen stopped working. The characters in the screen are not visible UNLESS I turn off all the lights and get to see some very light bright on the screen. I share this problem with Ledger support team and the only advise is to restore the wallet but no other solution as the ledger was not under warranty anymore.

One of my friends have the same problem, this is an issue with the ledger and has nothing to do with the users. You cant trust a wallet which after some time and due to internal issues basically stopped working. More than anything, their support team wont provide any solution at all.

Damn, I guess that's what happens to early adopters Grin Paid the full price, eh, at least this way I didn't have to wait Roll Eyes
Oh no, I don't like that felling when I see a good discount for something I (just) purchased in full price  Grin

Review will come when I find more time. Still need to try some aspects like multisig.
Same here, I also have a few devices ready for some testing and reviews, but I need time and some extra motivational push for writing something with meaning.
I don't want to turn into secret agent jerry007 Cool

I would e.g. like to carry the Passport around daily but the screen will probably scratch too fast (it already has a few ones - more about this in my future review).
Top secret advice to avoid scratches, never take of protective foil from devices, or you could just buy those old nokia phone protective cases.
Maybe even write some feedback to Passport developers to make improvements for next version.
6560  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: November 12, 2021, 01:58:48 PM
I’m very tempted to get one to test out as well. They have distributors in various countries and I might trust those especially with the supply chain validation process done during setup.
The price is not such a big issue for me. If I’ll get it, I’ll make sure to post an honest extensive review here.

Passport wallet sold all their foundation edition devices, but they now have special discount if preordering now for $199, and you should receive your device around February 2022.
This is a nice $100 discount and good chance for anyone who planned to buy this wallet, offer is limited for only 2500 devices and they plan to introduce some improvements and firmware updates:
