I can see a time when miners are forced to reduce power consumption during periods of peak demand. Alternatively, they may face heavy surcharges.

No cents, no feeling - I'm afraid the forum doesn't feel for you. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

I wish I could give mine away, because that would mean I've found some great posters and posting. I seem to have a resistance at 30, so maybe I should go on another merit award spree. The trouble with that is that I seem to find more posters to add to my ignore list, than I find to award merit. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

To cause considerable manipulation of merit system, a merit source needs to be involved in this.
This is not true. I'm not a merit source, but I have awarded well over 100 merit points.

I guess this shows that blocking by IP is a good move. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

It might be handy to have a restricted board for members who have given away more than 100 merit ( say ). I think it would be useful for people who are actively awarding merit to discuss policy. For example, I gave a merit to a new guy who hadn't received any. His post wasn't outstanding, but it was well written and on topic. When I looked at his recent history, most of his post were of similar quality. No indivual post made me think " Yes, that's worth a merit", but looking at the collection, I thought he was a useful contributor to the forum.
Did I do the right thing in giving him a merit?

Come on guys - this is PayPal. Just think of the potential that they will have to lose wallets, and thus to increase ther profits. Of course you will be able to pay a $50 fee to recover a $10 wallet. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

I feel very welcome here at bitcoin community, I just passed the newbie status, now I'm JR member, some of my post was deleted but it do not bother me, because I understand the rules and regulation here, and for those newbie who are interested to stay in the community, please follow the etiquette of posting.
I gave you a merit because I thought you were trying to help the forum with some of your posts ( not neccessarily this one ). It doesn't look as if you are using Bitcoin yet, if you get the chance, you will learn a lot if you can make a couple of small transactions.

Well it has happened with Syria and others no longer accepting dollars for oil.
This was so predictable that you have to wonder what the long term plan is for the dolar. They seem to be shoving it under the bus, and I suppose that may be one way of losing the mountain of debt.

Kitco is a well respected site for reporting on precious metal and commodity prices. They post news items from a variety of sources. Some of these items are great, and provide some good analyses and informed opinions. Others are somewhat suspect, and indicate a level of bigotry often found in the financial world. I think it is interesting to see the misinformation that some old established names are pushing onto the investing public.
As always, you need to check the source before acting on the information.

what you need to do is write your username down on a paper wallet - film yourself sticking it up your arse. Then spend 8 months reading the forum without posting
Is there a paper wallet that supports HalfWit then?

Depending on what public WiFi you use it might be a small part of the issue. I do some work for places that give free public WiFi (Some malls, some offices) Web / HTTP traffic is given a massive priority over other traffic.
Almost all P2P stuff (games / skype / unknown traffic) is dropped to the bottom of the list. Torrents (if the AP catches them) are throttled to 5k. The person sees good connection through the web but all other traffic is crawling so they blame the other peers. It's actually a somewhat standard practice. So if the public WiFi you connect to is throttling it can really slow you down.

I use a variety of connections, and I'm starting to get a feel for the problems, and the way to optimise things. I need to do a bit more research though. Sorry to be a bit slow doing this, but I've got interested in my new product brand site, and the possibility of using Steemit to promote it.

The way to get merit is to emerge from the twilight alt world, and come into the sunshine of Bitcoin. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

Double spacing won't help you to earn merits. It could cause some readers to skip your post, and then you have lost the chance of getting a merit for it.
|
|
|
The rule I know with regards to awarding merits is that you have to give it to a constructive post.
Nope, you don't HAVE to give merit to anyone. There is a good diversity amongst the members, and this means that reasonable/good posters stand a good chance of receiving merit from somebody here. I don't like posters who slow down my reading, so they don't get merit from me. Others seems to prefer the aesthetics of a post that is designed to be an art form. You take your chances if you think you can jazz up mediocre content with pretty formatting. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

Im pretty much aware of what you are talking about. But please link to me on where i can see the rules that you stated(if its made by theymos). We are talking here about the rules and not a "reasonable" consensus, theres a big difference between the two. Until you can point me out if there is a consensus about the rules, then i rest my case or rather having a "reasonable" argument with you.
Enquiring minds want to know why this is so important to you. Do you want to breach the "rules", or do you think they should be tightened?

At first I didn't think it would be possible to come up with a de-ranking system that would work but after sleeping on it I think I might have got it.
The forum should hire in addition to moderators a new elite group of Shitpost Scrutineers (The SS for short). It would be their job to monitor all sections of the forum but focus on the spam megathreads and award -1 merit for every shitpost they find. Any account would be instantly demoted to the rank their new merit count earned and if they reached a negative merit count they would be nuked.
How about anyone below the rank of full member who uses the word merit gets nuked? could be automated.. would remove 5 billion threads and posts. You just beat me to it, except that I was going to suggest they went back to junior, or maybe we could have a fema rank ( failed to embrace merit awards) ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

From were exactly you got that rule of yours?( please direct or link me that it came from theymos or cyrus) A self proclaimed rules like yours cant be obeyed or followed by forum members. There should be a consensus among DT member and/or mod for that of rule to be functional. If you were theymos then your words are absolute but since you are a self proclaim rule maker then your rules are trash.
If you read the threads, you will see that there is a reasonable consensus about awarding merit. Some members push the envelope, but they appear to be aware they are doing it.

As has been pointed out - there are some rules.
Don't even attempt to sell merit. Don't exchange merit for favours. Don't give merit to friends and family unless they deserve it. Don't exchange merit with other members. Don't award merit to promote sig spamming affiliates.
I have a few rules of my own.
Don't award merit to those who clog up the boards with annoying text formatting and useless images. Don't give merit to necro-bumpers.
I don't have any authority here, so I just put offenders on ignore, and I gather other members do the same. If you break the rules, you will never get merit from merit awarders who have put you on ignore.
