661  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: New ASIC project was announced in Chinese forum, 200T in Sept. on: May 17, 2013, 09:34:50 PM
Can anyone actually read the webpage or give us some details about this venture?  It would be nice to have a few more points of information and elongated plan.

Is there an agreement with Burnside to trade up fractions of shares to full PT shares?

A better idea is to add a way to donate by having a BTC address for people to give a few mBTC here and there.  If a few hundred/thousand people donate it could prove to be a substantial revenue stream.
664  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BTC volatility index on: May 13, 2013, 05:41:21 PM
BTC is very volatile because of the lack of confidence/trust in the currency.  Adding futures market etc to BTC does not solve that even though it may slightly reduce volatility.  The key here is to have more companies accept the currency, and as more companies accept the currency more users are added to the base.  In the long term, BTC will slowly grow in value because there is a limited number of them and will eventually become a mainstream currency.  Increasing markets for trade removes customers from using it as currency so it may actually increase volatility.  This is because if everyone hoards their BTC the price will increase very quickly and once it rises to a certain point will crash just like in April 2013.  Obviously, this is not the answer for a long term currency.

I can't believe people haven't noticed this is a scam.  A. He doesn't provide which market he's following GOX/coinbase etc. or and average of BTC price.  B.  He doesn't say how much money he has to pay out and you invest 10k BTC he probably cant pay that back.  C.  This is a .85:1 return, you'd have to be an idiot to take these chances when you get better odds in a casino...  D. Any BTC you do send him he can just keep...

IMO wouldn't leave money like that around on GOX/coinbase etc.  Best bet is to keep it on your computer and not download malicious keyloggers and keep computer up to date on virus software.  That way if the big companies get DDoSed or hacked you can't lose your money.  If you need to exchange the coins then transfer them in and the money out asap or vice versa.
667  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Rent space on a mining server. Mining United, Make extra bitcoins. on: May 12, 2013, 03:18:06 AM
Proof that this is a scam.  First off, there is no mention anywhere on the site of mining capabilities of there servers other than the fact that they have "several" 12*7970 servers.  We’ll say for arguments sake that they can somehow pull out 750MH/s per card which yields about 10GH/s (yeah I’m really giving them some leeway here).  “Several” mining rigs corresponds to 2-3 usually but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt here and say 5.  This yields a total mining capability of 50 GH/s.  This can mine 2.5 BTC per 24 hour window.  However, it must be noted that the power costs are through the roof for 60 7970 which costs about.  Each of the cards pull 250-300W which gives power usages per day of 18KWh which reduces margins to about 2BTC per day (again giving them some leeway on electric cost).  Then I went through and calculated the payouts of a single day 5/9 investment 5/10 payout, and they equaled 7.8 BTC.  Anyone is free to do this obviously it is listed on their website unless it changes.  Additionally, there are payouts unable to be added together that were “bonuses” because they lack a date in the data.  Even if they have 15 rigs going, they still wouldn’t be breaking even.  Granted they do have the income from people investing, this is just used to give profits to the people investing, eventually the scheme will fail and everyone will lose their investments.  For people who have difficulty spotting scams, this is most definitely one.

P.S. When websites are sketchy and there is a low population using the server, no one is going to use their real first name on the account.  Keith, Kate, and Tom are all made up names and the quotes to go with them (on the home page of the site).

I don't think anyone can definitively say.  This is because many people on the outside view the currency as purely speculative and all of the hackers looking to steal money from people certainly degrade peoples' confidence in the coin.  Increasing the monetary base behind bitcoin will decrease volatility in the long run and as volatility decreases more and more merchants will begin using it is a method of payment.  As a society we need to be accept it as a whole and treat it like another currency.
