Isnt that what we all want? Distribution is what it is. No amount of complaining will change that. However, anybody can step up and start doing useful stuff and get rewarded. Anybody. Even a simple C programmer like me.

James

I am not a developer. I am just a guy who likes crypto and bought a few NXT and reads this thread to see how the development is coming.
I still can contribute a thought on what I think I see as a big flaw in NXT gaining widespread adoption and try to influence the developers by making suggestions. I can play musical instruments but if someone doesn't like what I'm playing I don't say "well if you spent more time learning to play you could play it yourself". That would be a copout.

As I stated, personally I would forge for free and am doing that now. My concern is about down the road when more users come along and less of them are going to be intimately involved and willing to run a program on their computer, especially one that opens them up to DDOS attacks or potentially worse for no reason. People follow the path of least resistance. I'm just one guy, but not the only one, who sees this as a potential serious flaw. The developers are busy with higher minded stuff and I think are a little bit removed from average users. That's why suggestions from nobodies like me can be helpful, or not. But to say we should be doing your job and developing your program for you is a little much.

James, I think that what you say about anybody being able to step up and contribute is not really true. By what means is this possible? Like Brian says, not everyone is a programmer, and even if they are, it doesn't seem as there is a way to contribute in a proficient, meaningful way. By what means can someone help? Who is organizing the community in this way? I know that there are certain groups of you who are working on things, but as far as I have seen, participating as you have implied is a closed shop. I hope with the coming to power of the comitees elect, that this scenario will change, and someone will conduct some sort of organization of community resources. But as of the way things are right now, your statement is false, and people can't just "step up".

I am not a programmer, but still can "step up".
I am organizing the team for James to work on the AE Gateway, I am trying to get nev devs on board to work with the core dev team and am trying to organize the AE testing.
While I have a job where I have to work 50-60 a week.

You could step up and help us writing test cases for the AE testing.

Your statement is invalid.

I also work. I Am a small business owner and work what seem to be endless hours, so you don't impress me that you have a job; and have offered to help in any way I can help several times and have pretty much been ignored. If you would care to view my posts on this thread offering my assistance and the replies to my offers you will see that you are full of shit.

Please, both of you. No namecalling.
I have read both of your posts and believe you are above that.

Jerical: even though they might not be picked up, I believe that your questioning has value just because it forces people to think.
Dialectics is important, especially in development. Even ideas that don't get implemented help things forward.

As such, I'd like to offer my appreciation for that.
662  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 06, 2014, 10:30:12 PM

I didnt say that people should become devs. I said TEST. ANYBODY can test.

All this complaining is getting me depressed. Maybe I shouldnt bother with any of the projects I am doing.
All people seem to do is complain about this, a release is not done, I dont get anything from forging, blah, blah blah
I am working 18hr days trying to bring significant improvements, but if this is the attitude people have and they wont be forging because it doesn pay them enough, then why am I bothering?

STOP COMPLAINING
START HELPING

Is that too much to ask?

For people that want to earn stuff from forging, there is nodecoin. That should be end of story on that issue. Not only do you help secure the network, you will get nodecoins. Unless I get so depressed from all this nonsense that I dont bother making nodecoin. Is that what you want?

James

You are appreciated James. I do understand your frustrations. Is there anyway, that I can help? I am not a coder, and really not all that skilled with computers, so that will limit what I am able to do as far as helping on your end of things. But I will help how I can.

If I could make a suggestion, it should be a point of interest for someone to organize and administrate the community in such a fashion as to facilitate helping, as you suggest. If there were a clear and pointed way for people to be able to get involved and to use skills and talents they posses it may eliminate some of the complaining. It seems as though there are a lot of active people in the NXT community. That is evident from all of the complaining. Cheesy Someone should set some goals and get these people organized to some purpose. This should be a purpose of the new commitees. A wise captain knows that idleness is the seed of mutiny.

Please read my post above.
There are plenty of tasks and projects to organize. Pick one and "do the needfull" as my indian collegues say Smiley

In todays summaries, I started a "vacancies" category.
If there are any that need filling, mcjavar, please let me know. About 1000 people see it, also people that don't see this thread all that often.
Might widen the search. Smiley

BTC38 just added a shitload of other coins to the list, including Vertcoin, which has a very good swarm, too (As you can see by the quickly rising votes there)
If you haven't yet, please vote. It's a very bit exchange.

If you´ve read my PM, I am trying to help you build a core dev team...

Yes, I need to think about how this should be done. Before the source was public, the problem was how to decide who is trustworthy. Now that it is open, how do we decide who is good enough?

Companies conduct technical interviews. Those will filter out the completely ignorant, but for more experienced people it becomes difficult to judge who is better. I am also not confident in my own skills as an interviewer, and also some good people perform bad at interviews because of the stress and pressure to perform. Especially for an open source project, I don't feel doing interviews is the right approach.

For paid developers, we could consider trial projects, which they would do on their own fork of the repository, and if at the end we like the code and integrate it into the main repository, we accept them as paid developers. This would mean they would have to spend a few weeks without pay at first. Or, we can take the risk and do it as a one month paid contract, with the option of making it permanent. This would be something the NXTtechdevfund committee should discuss.

I would need to research how other open source projects decide who to accept and trust, e.g. how the linux kernel development is organized, and see if we can adopt their project management practices.

In terms of skill set, being a very good Java developer is the only requirement. The code does not depend strongly on any specific tool or library. We use a database, so some familiarity with relational database and SQL is needed, but there are enough areas of the code one can work on without touching the database at first. We also use servlets and Jetty, so again familiarity with servlets and the http protocol would be helpful, but most Java developers already have that.

Good object-oriented design skills are essential. So is writing clean and maintainable code. For developers with main background in languages other than Java, I can tell immediately that Java is not their native language - I have seen lots of Java code that reads like C. The original BCNext code was very foreign too, so I had to rewrite lots of it. So for somebody coming from C/C++ background, if this is going to be their first Java project, they would need to learn a lot, so that the code they add actually reads like Java.

In addition to Java developers, and in fact much more urgently, we need a good cryptographer. This person doesn't even need to be that fluent in Java, the language background wouldn't matter (well, he should at least be able to read and understand the Java code). But I don't have much cryptography background myself, so this is an area where we currently lack skills, especially after the departure of BCNext.

Jean Luc, I want to thank you for this.
It helps to know that we are looking for good people to get on board for the future development.
It also helps to know that you will be staying on board so there is no knowledge leak.

And thanks to mcjavar for organising this!

Instead of whining about the big holders not footing the bill for all the work that needs to be done, maybe we should see how much the community at large is willing to invest in developing a client, then ask if one or 2 whales would be willing to match funds? For example, if a bunch of participants in this thread make pledges totaling, say, 500,000 NXT, one of the 50Mil holders could match that, making for a total of 1 million to go to the person or persons who can deliver a working, user-friendly client. I, for one, would be willing to contribute 500 NXT

There are already a ton of clients, are you saying they are all bad?..

wesleyh, I didn't at all mean to imply that currently available clients are bad, and I greatly appreciate the work you've done on developing clients. I'm fairly new to NXT and so far have only used the standard client. So I really can't speak to the quality of the other currently available ones. I was just going by a consensus that seems to exist here that there remains a need for an extremely simple "1-click" client in order to get the less tech-savy folks involved with NXT.

In any case, the point I was making applies to dev work in general, not just work on the client. People around here are always complaining about the big holders not giving away more of their NXT for development projects. While I think there is some validity to these complaints, I think the rest of us should be willing to pull some of the weight to. I wish people would talk more about what THEY are willing to do and less about what they think others are obligated to do.

I agree. It's no use wishing and crying over spilt milk.
Of course we need to keep trying to get the whales involved, but otherwise, it's up to us.
And if I look at the thread today, that is going well. We did tons today again, and do so everyday.
Tons of Nxt to spend would be nice, but we are getting things together even without the tons, which is admirable!
I mean that not in a fluffy way, but in a "christ, these people can get shit together, if needed!" way.

Pinarello how are things standing in the eMunie area? Are you still following them?

No I dont support emunie, and dont follow them. honestly I am against emunie cos it just a ltd company
I also was concerned about this, considering you still have their logo as avatar.

BTT has removed the ability to add/change avatar, which is unfortunate because I was going to us the photo FURSELER posted a few pages ago.

NO!

Bad msin, down!

For future Core Dev team;

I'd recommend; Chuckone, wesleyh, zahlen, ricot, gimre, ImmortAlex, CIYAM, BloodyRookie, Jaguar0625.  We'll need to offer a significant amount of Nxt for 3 months of work.  I would suggest 250k Nxt for each member from unclaimed.

Well, the NXTtechfund already has a topic to vote on, now  Cheesy

Just got a call from an outside investor who is interested in using the Asset Exchange for issuing Assets for his new project.

Was looking to set up his own alt to start this up, but is now véry interested in the possibilities of Nxt.

I'm having a talk with him on Saturday.

I may have to draw on the knowledge of some of our devs to contact his devs to see how the two systems will mesh.

Get Some!!!! That is the type of thing that NEEDS to be done. Tech guys please help Damelon out in any way possible.

What are this guys plans? Is it just an info session or strategy discussion? Keep us posted.

Info session. I know a bit, but need to ask more precise questions, and him too.
Suffice to say that he is talking about giving Nxt a serious monetary backing if what he told me is correct.

Not trying to bust your chops, but what type of business or purpose is he looking at NXT to fill? Not trying to give you the third degree, just kinda intrigued.

At this stage, too early to tell. As I say: info session. I need to tell him where we are honestly, he needs to tell me.
Then we exchange what we expect/need and see if we can make it work.

this said, CfB you told us DEV costs was covered why this turn over?

What was paid will be delivered by the 3rd of April. Not more.

Is anyone knowing what we paid for?

AE, VS and AC as far as I know. TF as BCNext made it, but no more.

At some point a bunch of devs are going to have the "aha" moment that Nxt is the leanest blockchain possible and that Nxt provides the most competitive advantages of any available cryptocurrency platform.

At that point, this thread would explode.  It would be like the Twitter servers crashing because of the Oscars retweets.

Do we/can we have separate Client Bug Report Threads because I am forging on Offspring, was sent NXT, and Offspring shows no update in balance like the Blockchain Explorer does.  This is the type of comment/bug report that each dev needs to be monitoring individual Bug Report Threads for.  How do we get this done?

Offspring is a product from DGEX.

This is the official thread on nextcoin.org. Smiley

I know that this is BS about Nxt. But even generally speaking about POS, what if forgers offer "Anonimity service"? I don't know if that can be implemented in NXt, but i guess it can be implemented in some POS coin. Anonimity will cost money, so Forgers will forge not only for transaction fees but to offer anonimity and get paid for that. Possible? Maybe some genius can make such a coin on top of Nxt.

This is what we need the white paper for.

We need *proof* that this is BS.

I would agree that it's not a good strategy to even *try* to convert hardcore miners.

They wíll find something to nag.

We need the people who are interested and/or neutrals. People who are willing to try out.

The impressive part should be that such a simple thing can secure a huge network for pennies!

then how come nobody use them and people don't know about them?

This is actually a fair question. I think the answer is that there are MANY clients, and people generally want a recommendation for ONE. Nobody wants to rally behind one to the exclusion of others, so we arrive at a dilemma.

The key here, sadly, is for the "getting started" tutorials to focus on ONE, and then let people know there are many other options.  Right now, it's a choice paradox: when presented with many great options, people are left unable to make a decision. This is a proven aspect of human behaviour.

Exactly!

I couldn't say it better.

We are too much decentralised if it's about the client.

We need to chose one and make instructions or something. We don't need to call it official.
Just choose one so everyone can post that specific client as first. And if users are interested in other clients, we can redirect them.

It is very confusing right now.

Almost every coin has 1 wallet.

Will you be able/available to do it? Who should be in charge of this?

I don't see a problem with a private site basically endorsing only one client to keep it clear for new users.
They could still mention the other ones, but could put one client (doesn't matter to me which) BIG on front, so people will mainly go to that one.
These things don't need to be decided by all people. Site owners can and probably should decide this by themselves.
