Interestingly, sometimes I find something good discussed on alt board, given that all Bitcoin only related board also spammed with posting about alt,

That is a failure of moderation.
6602  Other / Meta / Re: List of Threads Giving Away Merits on: March 02, 2018, 09:05:56 AM
I don't give any merit to people posting in those threads, and I don't respond to people asking me to review their posts. In fact sometimes I put them on ignore.

I've got my own standards for deciding on merit awards, and hopefully they aren't too far from the essential spirit of the forum. I feel that if you have to ask for merit, then I should consider the reason for your membership of this forum.
6603  Other / Meta / Re: I've still got 80 sMerit to give away. on: March 02, 2018, 07:02:42 AM

It's usually a forum system work not as wiki storing good final knowledge. If you open the forum then you must give people the right to post thing they want even it's shitty. I'm tired with the off-topic removing even I replied to the topic like just a comment.

Bitcoin Talk is a private forum, and as such it doesn't have to give anybody any rights that the admins don't agree to. Also, it is a valuable source of information about Bitcoin.

If you run a real life forum, you don't want scruffy dogs entering the forum areas, and defecating all over the place. If it happens, you clean up the mess, and ban the dogs. We don't want scruffy dogs joining the forum, and defecating all over our boards.  If you continue to do it, then I'm sure they will give you a perma-ban.

My comments are based on your post, and not on a review of your posting btw.
6604  Other / Meta / A juniot members suggestion for newbies first posts. on: March 02, 2018, 05:53:12 AM
In the "Beginners & Help" thread, maybe there can be a stickied post at top for newbies to introduce themselves if they wish. Seems like a lot of the posts recently in that thread are just that.

I gave the guy a merit for suggesting this. It's something that I've seen in many forums, and I'm a bit embarrassed that I didn't think of suggesting it. Smiley

I think it would be a good idea, and it would save some of the clutter on the index page. It would also make an interesting reference thread.
6605  Other / Meta / Re: I've still got 80 sMerit to give away. on: March 02, 2018, 05:44:28 AM

I've still got 80 sMerits because I don't go out hunting for posts to merit, but I just award them when I find a post that appeals to me. However, it is quite difficult to find these posts. The most promising boards ( the serious discussion ones ) tend to be neglected by most members. I don't visit the Frog Pond very much, as most of the threads seem to be worthless ( in my opinion ) long tail spam fests. I think I have given away too many on the Meta board - there are too many posts about Merit points, and I've just created another one. Smiley The beginners board ought to be the place for me to read threads, but that seems to be more about issues other than Bitcoin. Tech support has some interesting threads, but I'm not a power user of Bitcoin, so I'm not sure I'm qualified to make judgements there.

A bit off-topic reply but I'd like to ask you, what is the frog pond? I know you're talking about "Bitcoin Discussion" but are there any other boards that fall under your definition of "Frog Pond" Grin
It seems like I'm having the same trouble finding my favorite board... So what'd you suggest? what are those "promising boards"?

It is a bit difficult at the moment, but it seems to be improving slowly.

The boards of which I was thinking were probably the serious discussion, the stats/speculation, and the two tech ones. Those are the ones that spring to mind immediately.
6606  Other / Meta / Re: Merits all over the meta on: March 01, 2018, 07:03:07 PM

I don’t think your analogy is correct. You don’t sell Aston Martins, rather Burger Kings. Most people who join crypto gambling sites or buy ICOs through advertising on this forum are not the Aston Martin-type customer.

Thank you for reinforcing my point. Smiley

If you are trying to sell Aston Martins, you don't recruit the homeless as potential customers.
6607  Other / Meta / Re: A radical idea to partially clean up sig spamming. on: March 01, 2018, 06:56:53 PM

Killing bees leads nowhere. What we need is to burn the hive and kill the queen.

What a stupid thing to say. If there were no bees, ther would be virualy no food in the world. Honey is one of nature's great health foods as well.

We need more bees here, and fewer of the incompetents spraying verbal pesticides on them.
6608  Other / Meta / Re: Merit system is not working, failed! on: March 01, 2018, 06:34:34 PM
Well people obviously do earn merits, however it's mostly shared among those that know each other and are hence more likely to like each others posts. Also, there is pretty much no reason in giving merits to hero or legendary members as they have already reached maximum level. Unless Theymos modifies the merit system with respect to these users, there is no point receiving merit as a Legendary. In any case, I think the system was actually a success overall, yes there are issues, and yes most of the merit is hoarded by the fortunate few, but there are also outliers who are rewarded in merit. Become an outlier and you'll be merited.

Did you see I gave a merit to the post above yours. I don't know the guy, and have had no previous interaction with him.

Giving merit to Heros and Legendaries allows them to pass on sMerit to other posters - that's the way the system works. Smiley It also gives us some feeddback on the community sentiment about our actions. Right at the moment I'm getting seriously p'd off with the lazy arses who can't be bothered to search before asking a question for the 200th time, and posting it on the wrong board. It's a pretty thankless task scanning through hundreds of ill-written and badly structed posts. Maybe I should give up and see if I have a domain name with "coin" in it to start my own parallel chain. Smiley

6609  Other / Meta / Re: Ideas for improving post quality? on: March 01, 2018, 06:19:27 PM
If the IP country and the email address changes, and the posting quality drops, then the chances are that the account has been sold.
6610  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: question about forum on: March 01, 2018, 06:10:21 PM
Are there any newbie or junior members who have read the boards, and can answer this question.

Clue - it's about the forum, so it could be in the Meta section.
6611  Other / Meta / Re: A radical idea to partially clean up sig spamming. on: March 01, 2018, 05:41:26 PM

So far this is not working because you see lots of spam cluttered your experience, try turn it off and see what your experience feels like.

The cluttering spam is not the signature, it's the crap that has the signature hanging on its coat tails.

I do tutn them off, I use the ignore button. Unfortunately, non-members don't have that option, so they are faced with a load of semi-literate drivel when they visit the forum. Then they go off to another forum, and report on the low grade content on Bitcoin Talk.

The merit system is starting to make a difference in my opinion, but there is no single solution to the problem of increasing world unemployment, and the resulting attention that Bitcoin Talk aand other "money for doing nothing" projects seem to be getting.
6612  Other / Meta / Re: Merits all over the meta on: March 01, 2018, 05:31:53 PM
Chasing traffic volumes without consideration of quality is not the best way to profits. You could fill a party to sell Aston Martin cars with homeless people by offering them free meals, but you risk alienating the few genuine buyers that might find their way into the party.
6613  Other / Meta / Re: A radical idea to partially clean up sig spamming. on: March 01, 2018, 05:19:44 PM
I think you are missing the point. It isn't the displaying of the signatures that is the problem. It's the scamcoins that pay semi-literate posters to pollute the boards with garbled messages that are/were destroying the forum.
6614  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Moving from Windows to Linux and claiming forked coins. on: March 01, 2018, 05:02:22 PM
Well that's been copied - 171Gb for the directories. It was a lot faster than the Tosh, but that could have been because I was on USB3. It's probably a couple of days behind, and I'll sync it when I get on a better connection.
6615  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie on: March 01, 2018, 04:49:07 PM
Welcome to Bitcoin Talk, and I hope you enjoy your visits.

Make sure you read about activity and merits in the board stickies. They seem to cause a few problems here, and there are so many posts about them, that members are starting to get rude when new threads appear, and just ask the same old questions.
6616  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Moving from Windows to Linux and claiming forked coins. on: March 01, 2018, 04:00:46 PM
I need to use netbooks and notebooks as part of my mobile project.

At the moment I'm snow bound in a KFC with rubbish WiFi. In fact, I gave up on it and tethered to my mobile. I was going to buy a 512Gb SSD for the netbook ( Ubuntu ), but I keep buying more bits of kit, so I'm going to see how I get on with the 256Gb SSD. I've got a few photos on it, but there is over 200Gb free, and I hope that is enough for the blockchain and other directories. I haven't checked the current size of the blockchain. I'll then run the node with that and see if it makes any improvement.
6617  Economy / Speculation / Re: The stable price action is driving people crazy, including me. on: March 01, 2018, 02:30:26 PM
They are letting people pay off their credit card debts ready to suck more money out of them during the next rocket rise. Smiley
6618  Other / Meta / Re: Ideas for improving post quality? on: March 01, 2018, 02:26:59 PM

Hell block signatures till people have a total post count of 150 or even 250. Thats incentive enough they're here for the forums! I'm just throwing out ideas.

A simple post count check doesn't work. It just encourages active spamming to up the count. This is the advantage of the activity ranking. only one post per day counts towards your upgrade - well that's a bit over-simplified of course.

Not allowing, or restricting signatures until a responsible rank is achieved would avoid that problem.
6619  Other / Meta / Re: A radical idea to partially clean up sig spamming. on: March 01, 2018, 02:08:57 PM
How about a blacklist of sites then?

Again who will compile and verify the blacklist Huh  I believe after using the forum for sometime we will be able to shoot our attention directly to the juicy part of the post and able to avoid landing our eye to the sig.

One way is, giving each user setting to filter or turn off sig on his view so he will be able to have clean slate view of the discussion text/image only, without any sig and personal text maybe.
That way we don't have to go hostile towards Newbie that probably in later time will contribute to the wealth of discussion

It isn't so much the members who are at risk - I use ignore more and more frequently these days. It's the lurkers and other visitors who don't have any control over viewing. Bad or scammy links give a very bad image to the forum, and this is reflected in the comments on some other forums.

Ask user to embed their BTC address on the their webiste metadata, therefore we know he owns the website if it match with the BTC address mention on their profile.

Google ask for a simple text file that they provide to be left in the root directory of the site. I suspect they check this regularly.
6620  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: useful tips for everyone on: March 01, 2018, 01:47:24 PM
Please don't beg for merit - it's against the forum rules.

I've added you to the beggars gallery, and put you on ignore - so no merit from me ever.
