6761  Economy / Gambling / Re: ★☆★Mikes List of Scam and Legit Gambling sites★☆★ on: May 29, 2014, 06:12:45 AM
Just-dice and Primedice are in my eyes, head and shoulders above any other dice sites, so i'm surprised to see them ranked slightly different. A good list and base to work from though. Following this.

Does the absence of any customer service check marks for Just-Dice mean our customer service is bad, or just that the site works so well that you haven't had the joy of interacting with customer service yet?

Because we keep being told that our customer service is the best in the business.

when it comes to scams, they can be a ring of con-artist supporting him. you really dont know people behind a computer screen.  All it takes is good planning.  I could be everydice and you wont even know it.

That's what the web of trust is for.

You could be everydice and it wouldn't make any difference to me.  I still wouldn't have deposited there, because I had no reason to trust the site.

IMPORTANT:

A lot of the bigger investors (and some of the smaller ones) have enabled 2FA to protect their accounts.  This is a great idea, and it helps a lot in the event that your computer is compromised.

However.  I often get emails from people who have lost their phones, or had them crash, or reset them, or upgraded, etc. and who therefore can no longer generate valid 6 digit 2FA codes.  They usually expect me to just turn 2FA off on their account.

This kind of misses the point.  If I were to just turn off 2FA whenever I was asked, what's the point of having it?

So please, if you have 2FA enabled, make sure you have a backup copy somewhere offline (on paper in a safe, for example) of either
1) the QR code you used to set it up
or
2) the 16 character string in bold under the QR code

The screen you see that sets it up says in bold letters at the bottom to make a backup of the code, but it seems people often fail to do so (the image is just a sample - this isn't YOUR 2FA secret):

If you already have 2FA enabled, but DON'T have a backup of the secret, you can edit your 2FA settings, disable 2FA, then re-enable it to see the QR code and 16 character secret again.

Please make sure you have a backup!

Is there a link that we can view that chart on whenever we want (an updated one) or did you have to generate it? I've seen a couple others you've posted that I wanted to follow as well. If you're generating them, is there any chance of you posting like monthly on the blog or something?

I generated the chart manually, and it brought my laptop to a standstill for 15 minutes or so.  It seems to use huge amounts of RAM for some reason.

I'll go back to posting weekly profit charts in this thread like I did for a while.

But really, how do you know? The situation I was talking about was a guy who bought a premade computer that had a used HDD in it (it was a "brand new PC" and the HDD had been reformatted). He then got ahold of the owner and that person had sent it in for destruction but it apparently just got wiped and put in a brand new HP (I think it was).

Makes me think it could happen with other hardware as well though.

Seems I don't know for sure. I guess it's a good sign that the cold wallet still has coins in it...

Is there an easy way to disable wireless on a laptop? In a way that malware can't re-enable? Most of the time there's only encrypted wifi around when I use it, but it would be better not to rely on that.

I build systems from parts. (I mean, most miners do, right?) Motherboard, RAM, Graphics, Hard Drive, etc. If you can do that, most people who can, know if a system they are building is secure or not.

This is completely false. Building a computer via parts is as easy as adding everything to a cart, purchasing it and snapping/screwing it all together when it arrives.

That is totally irrelevant to if, say, you're aware that newegg shipped your motherboard to the NSA and they had fun with your bios.

This is my thought as well. Some people have bought hardware that was already used as well even though it was being sold as new.

Posted From bitcointalk.org Android App

That's true.

Posted From bitcointalk.org laptop

Interesting. But it would never happen to me.

dont go to sites that you have to invest coins etc....

There aren't any sites where you have to invest coins. Some offer you the opportunity to do so, but why avoid those?

Better advice would be to only send coins to sites you trust, whatever it's for.

Why you hate JD so? Wink

Dooglus I am going to invest some in your site but need some information that can I withdraw any time without any problem and its automatic or manual

You can invest and divest at any point without penalty.  Which you're invested, you get your share of any profits and losses the site makes.

As for withdrawing, you can withdraw as much as is available in the site's hot wallet instantly, and for larger amounts you need to contact me, which can result in a delay of up to 24 hours, but usually much less.

There are usually a few hundred BTC in the hot wallet, so depending on the amount you're talking about this may or may not be something you need to consider.

Also, any plan to ever have multi sig for the investor funds ? Would that even be doable with the funds constantly being moved from the cold to hot wallet?

I'm not sure how that would work, if you mean the investors should keep control of one of the private keys.  An investor could withhold their key and refuse to pay out a winner on the site.

JK, but the marketing put into DD didn't hurt any!

Also, DD had quite a small bankroll and a few very big losing players in the first week.  "Doge King" being the biggest I think.

just a question: in the "Invest" tab the (profit)% (now at: 0.331741%) is relative to what period? monthly? since day 1?

Since day 1.

This chart explains why (click for a larger version):

The top-most red line is the expected profit - 1% of the total amount wagered.  The black line is the actual profit.  It mostly runs parallel to the expected profit, but is far below it due almost entirely to a player called nakowa who won big in mid July and at the end of September.

The site's profit is now sitting between the 0.3% and 0.35% lines, is slowly climbing up through the red lines, but is expected to remain ~35k below the 1% line.

Am I reading this correctly that it's 37% returns in one years time ? As in someone who invested 10k made 3700$?

Yes (except it's 39%, not 37%), anyone investing 10k at launch would have 13.9k now.  That's previous returns, and there's no guarantee that if you invest today the site won't be devastated by a lucky big player tomorrow.  Note the -14% and -12% weeks back in September.

[ Edit: oh, sorry, I didn't notice the dollar sign.  I thought you were talking about Bitcoin.  All JD numbers are in BTC, and DD is in DOGE. ]

What I find amusing is that on December 23rd, after the first partial week of Doge-Dice's operation, it had already returned investors 19%, overtaking the 17% that it had taken Just-Dice almost 6 months to achieve.  Note that Doge-Dice has returned 77% to investors in just over 5 months.

Here's an update as of the current time:

Yes, thank you. So if you knew the secret seed, because you knew what the hash is before the roll, you could mathematically figure out what the result of the roll would be and bet accordingly. Is that the gist of it?

If you remove the bit I struck out, then yes, you've got it.

The only bit you got wrong is that knowing the hash of the secret seed doesn't let you find the secret seed itself.  To find the secret seed you need to gain access to the server somehow, or be told it by someone.

The point of a hash is that it is one way.

If I tell you I'm thinking of a secret, and its hash is 1b8f391a4813d911de3f94d624ccdc82c12fc6a6 then you can't figure out what the secret is without guessing a whole bunch of times, hashing each guess, and seeing if it gives you 1b8f391a4813d911de3f94d624ccdc82c12fc6a6.

But when I tell you later that my secret was 'this is my secret', you can hash that, and see that it gives you that same long string of text, and be pretty certain that I'm telling you the truth.

There's a chance that some other secret would give the exact same hash, but it's almost impossible to find two secrets with the same hash.

(In this example I used sha-1 for the hashing because it produces shorter hashes; in practice people use sha-256 or sha-512 which produce longer outputs making 'collisions' even less likely).

I was not asking for any explanation from you I understand this all but its my bad as I invested I have lost in 3 weeks and then I withdraw some other money and then I invest in cryptsy and I have some more lost so its all happen in life but thanks for you all information hope I will again invest some coins in near future I have full faith in you

I understood that you weren't asking for it, but I had the information and thought it might be of interest.

Did you see BayAreaCoins offered to buy your account from you?

If you have a significant investment loss, it means your account can be used by another investor to avoid paying any commission until the loss is recovered.

I'd be willing to pay you a little more than him to keep it out of his grasping hands, too.  Wink

Has anyone ever made a mistake when using raw tx's?

I remember seeing one thread about some guy who tipped like 10 bitcoin to the miners.

Yes, I saw something like that too.  I think it has happened a few times, which is why I automate the whole process, keep it simple, and check 'by eye' before broadcasting the transaction to the network.
6779  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Just-Dice.com : Invest in 1% House Edge Dice Game on: May 26, 2014, 11:20:40 PM
Let's just say it was a "security measure".

You got drunk and left your computer at the bar? Tongue

Close.

We were staying in a hotel for a few days.  After checking out, about two hours away by then, I noticed I had accidentally left about 20 million dollars worth of bitcoin in the drawer of the bedside table.

Found the nearest town, bought a new cold wallet machine, retrieved the wallet data from an encrypted backup, made new wallets (did I mention there were a couple of billion dogecoins in that drawer too?) and transferred the coins over.

Everything on the cold wallet was encrypted so there was no risk, but it felt scary to be so far away from it.  I'm told that even full-disk encryption is no protection if your hardware falls into the wrong hands, since they can install a keylogger in the code that prompts for the passphrase at boot time.  So I can't use that machine any more.  It goes into the pile marked 'possibly tainted'.

So don't worry guys.  Your coins are in safe hands.  Most of the time.  Smiley
6780  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Just-Dice.com : Invest in 1% House Edge Dice Game on: May 26, 2014, 11:12:25 PM
Ah, I didn't think about it in terms of change. So essentially when you make a transfer from the cold wallet to the hot one, you do so as a 500 BTC block, which results in 0 change. Conversely, it would send x amount and then create the new address for the rest of the change. That's actually really smart thinking!

I don't follow the code, though. The lines with - and +'s appear to be duplicates... what was actually changed?

When making raw transactions, you have to be careful that the outputs sum to the same as the inputs - otherwise you end up tipping the miners a few thousand coins.  To avoid making mistakes, I want the raw transaction to be as simple as possible, and so don't want to be working with change.

So when someone wants to withdraw 2000 BTC, I make a raw transaction that takes 4 of the 500 BTC outputs from the cold wallet and sends a single 2000 BTC to my online address.

I can only fit the data for about 4 outputs into a single QR code before the resolution gets too high for my webcam to scan (I hold one laptop's screen up to the other's webcam, and it has a hard time with reflection on the screen, focus, etc.)  But it seems safer than sharing a USB stick between the online and offline machines to transfer data.

The - and + indicate lines that I deleted (-) and lines that I added (+).  (Really I just changed two lines, but git (which is a tool people use for storing versions of software as they work on it, to allow you to see who changed what, when) sees that as two deletions and two insertions).
