681  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [∞ YH] solo.ckpool.org 1% fee solo segwit mining USA/DE 230 blocks solved! on: April 08, 2017, 12:55:57 AM
Those were the days, 25 BTC blocks (even though BTC was only worth $250 each) and only 102B to solve a block.
Well if we're going to compare... I can remember 50BTC blocks, $3 BTC and 30 million diff.  Undecided

Wasn't it in 2011 when the difficulty broke 1M?  I seem to remember allot of people saying they were quitting because it wouldn't be profitable to mine anymore.
Actually you're right, I recall the diff being even lower but btc was $30 at the time. It went down while I was mining. I think diff was around 600k when I first started mining (June 2011).

I wonder how many BTC are lost forever due to people losing their old wallets?

Allot!  The first time Bitcoin hit $1200 a guy was digging up a landfill because he through out his old laptop which had 7,500 BTC on it.

I just wish I had the Bitcoin back that I wasted on the early ASIC's.  13.48 BTC for a Jalapeno, ouch.

I'm not too concerned though because I think recent SegWit discussions on LiteCoin may help ease pressure on BTC for a while.  I guess I just don't fully understand SegWit ...

Segregated Witness is to correct a screw up they made when implementing the P2SH changes.

Did LiteCoin make the same mistakes the Bitcoin devs did?
684  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Strange things with bitcoin.com pool (pool.bitcoin.com). on: March 31, 2017, 09:39:53 AM
Personally neither segwit nor BU are acceptable to me so I just want to stick with the status quo for now until someone comes up with a reasonable plan to increase block size incrementally according to the number of transactions available.  Increasing blocksize by 32MB or even 8MB at once would be bad for Bitcoin.  I believe where we are now is healthy, but I agree that we do need to plan for the future.

Doing nothing will likely result in continued loss of market to alt coins.  I personally believe Bitcoin Unlimited is the best solution that has been proposed.  You may want to do additional research, and begin to support a proposal, or make another.

Well it seems to me that either option makes Bitcoin and alt coin anyway.  So if there is a good alt coin that rises to prominence that may be better than these available options, which are full of personal agendas, then so be it.  If Bitcoin REALLY needs to be constantly tweaked and turned into something that it wasn't supposed to be in order to survive, then it should be allowed to die!  However I don't believe that it is in need of constant tweaking.  Bitcoin just needs to be allowed to do what is was designed to do.  With the exception of the P2SH fiasco Bitcoin is doing what it was intended, and quite well.

I agree I should do some more research, but unfortunately there is very little objective information out there.  Most of what I have seen full of FUD, name calling and agendas that are not good for Bitcoin.  So if you know of a thread which has true Objective information that explains things clearly I would love to see it.

As far as coming up with a better proposal, I lack the programming skills to develop a workable solution.  So I leave that to others who do have the skills for that.  I just hope there are some dev's who not only have the comp sci skills but also some wisdom.  I just haven't seen that yet.

May i know what are you using for better mining hashrate?

You need to post in the altcoin section.

You don't want to mine Bitcoin with a GPU.
686  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Strange things with bitcoin.com pool (pool.bitcoin.com). on: March 23, 2017, 09:36:57 AM
Never heard of the pool, domain or the person.

I would recommend mining at some other pool that is better known and has a better reputation.

Are you wanting to mine at a pool that signals BU?  I think the mining pool list shows which pools are signalling what now.

Really, you've never heard of Roger Ver?? He was an early investor in bitcoin, and is attributed with its bringing into the main stream. He's the largest proponent of BU, so he's been in the (bitcoin related, but mainstream) news lately.

Nope, never heard of him.  Not that that means anything.

If any one person should be attributed to bringing Bitcoin into the mainstream that would be Steve Gibson with this 2011 podcast

https://media.grc.com/sn/sn-287-lq.mp3

So it sounds like your not a BU proponent.  The Bitcoin mining pool list has pie charts showing which pools are signalling what.  So pick a reputable pool that signals what you want and quit stressing about some obscure pool which has an agenda.

Block! by mediv Smiley with 12THs Smiley
Probably an A6
2.26BTC txn fees Smiley
and a payout

I really love the big fat ones like this...and a payout as well! Cheesy

So what about a switch to BU?  Wouldn't increasing the blocksize allow more transactions and, thus, more fees?

Yes, more fees but lower fees as well.  The more block space available the more lower fee/no fee transactions get processed as well.

What size blocks would "BU" have?
689  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Why are you still mining on AntPool? on: March 14, 2017, 10:32:13 AM
only wanting enough bitcoin to buy another gpu for gaming.

Sorry for being a little off topic.

But where can you buy gaming GPU's with Bitcoin?

NewEgg takes Bitcoin.  Dang I had just bought a gaming GPU from Amazon too.

691  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: SegWit is a waste of disk space? on: March 13, 2017, 10:26:25 AM
Well my opinion is based on my own experiences while paying for things with BTC. Slow confirmations and high cost tx fees. How the hell that is a nice thing?

I agree though with you about the empty blocks and spam, 100%.

Supply and demand at work.  When supply decreases demand increases, and vice versa, then the cost increases.  I don't mine at the moment, but I really like seeing 1 to 2.5+ Bitcoin in transaction fees in each block.  That is very healthy for Bitcoin.  The only thing I have purchased lately are games on Steam, but I always use the higher transaction fee option and have always been very successful in getting my transaction accepted quickly.  Of course I am using Bitcoins I mined in 2011/12.

Transaction fees are the lifeblood of Bitcoin.  I think they are a "nice thing"  because without them Bitcoin has no real value.
692  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: SegWit is a waste of disk space? on: March 13, 2017, 09:50:05 AM
One thing for sure is that we can't keep going with the current system forever.

Why not?

Supply and demand works.

Maybe, if some pools weren't mining empty blocks and people weren't spamming the network with transactions to artificially consume block space, there would be such an "urgent" need to increase block size at all.  Granted it seems pools are mining fewer empty blocks, but they do still happen.  That is NOT a problem with bitcoin.  And people wasting their money with spam transactions consuming block space and bloating the number of unconfirmed transactions is NOT a problem with Bitcoin either.  That is people trying to manipulate others.

Bitcoin is a set of principles as much as it is a technology and an idea.  The less it is tampered with the better.  Bitcoin should be allowed to succeed or fail on it's own merits.

Those who want Bitcoin to be something different than what it is should start their own AltCoin with their own set of principles and technologies.  That may very well one day supplant Bitcoin or compliment it.

CGMiner is for Bitcoin only.  It doesn't support altcoins.  Although some use it to mine sha256 altcoins, it's still not supported.

Bloodbath... COIN ETF got denied by SEC.

What's an ETF? an altcoin?

Exchange traded fund. Got denied because SEC concluded it cannot exercise oversight on the major bitcoin exchanges.

Ah, thanks.  Do we want the SEC trying to exercise oversight?  Probably not.

Or maybe lead to a true battery breakthrough which pretty much ends the energy issue for good.

Solid-State Batteries sound really promising.

Heard anything new in the Super-Capacitor area?

Are they very efficient?

Which Super Caps or SS Batteries?

Both are in development.

population reduction is far more important then energy spent mining coins.

Not to change the subject, too much.  I recently heard an analysis on population growth based on UN population figures for the year 2150, which are that there will be 9.1 Billion people on the earth.  The thing of that is that 7 Billion of them will be 65 years old and older.  So if that comes to fruition we could have 7 Billion people dying of old age in a 30 to 40 year time span.  At which point we would be far too underpopulated.  Not to mention the burden on the young to support us elderly while we die of old age, hopefully that will still be an option for us in the future, fingers crossed.
700  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is Bitcoin mining currently too energy inefficient for the future? on: February 22, 2017, 10:29:21 AM
I said we need to create better ways generating electricity.

You list the ways in which we currently generate electricity.

I think you missed the point of what I said by quite a bit.

Do you have ideas for better ways?

Nuclear Fission technology has moved forward by leaps and bounds and can be much better now.  Nuclear Fusion, as far as I know, is still not feasible.

P.S.

I do like that you picked the most unreliable means of generating energy for the home user market. Unless you live somewhere with 24/7 sunlight and a 100% constant wind I guess it would be ok?

Solar and Wind are great to supplement what the power companies produce and individuals can install this equipment if they choose.  Used in this way they can reduce the load on the power grid and reduce pollutants where electricity is generated by coal.

Solar and wind don't work well as a utility.  Environmentalist are now trying to shut down Wind and Solar furnaces because they are killing birds, I think that is very ironic.
