6801  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Metal Engraved Keypair Cards! Coming soon! on: July 01, 2011, 04:23:32 AM
Clarification:  Is that for two cards (one with private key and one with bitcoin address) or just one?
6802  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners quitting en masse -- so it begins. on: July 01, 2011, 04:22:02 AM
graphics card prices aren't going to drop below what the typical gamer market price is..

billion dollar chip fabs didnt run production lines basing demand for their products on a couple thousand bitcoin miners.

so u can drop the fantasy that cards are going to go for 'half price'.

all bitcoin mining did was increase demand for a market that already had a large existing demand to begin with.. when it disappears the world doesnt explode and amd doesnt shut down their factories..

the total number of 5830's in existence today is the same as it was before, and the total number of gamers buying them today is the same as it was before.

Whether newegg is selling them or some guy on ebay, it doesnt matter.. the supply is the same and the demand is the same..  people far more informed with the market data figured out those performance/price points long ago
Well, let's do some calculations...

The network currently consists of 14 TH/s.

A 5850 will do 325MH/s with a light overclock.

That'd be 43,076 5850's to match the current network speed.
Or 53,846 5830's.
Or 37,333 5870's.

These are not insignificant numbers.

Now I know, not everyone who is mining bought new hardware to mine with.  But really, you only have to look at ebay to see proof that mining really IS having a big effect on ATI video card prices.  There are far better gaming cards than the 5870 out there, and yet, the 5870 is selling for much more than them on ebay.  What other explanation could there be other than miners are buying them up so fast as to actually affect the price point (which you claim isn't possible)?

And yes, if bitcoin does suddenly drop in value, permanently, and 43000 video cards have to be unloaded, they probably will be going for half of what they are going for today.
6803  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FirstBits.com - remember and share Bitcoin addresses on: July 01, 2011, 03:23:21 AM
Hey, this is an awesome concept. I applaud you guys for coming up with it.

Removing the cases is a good thing because it would be hard for people to have to deal with upper and lower cases. There might be one gotcha though. Do you handle 2 addresses with the same characters but different cases properly. I know this is a rare edge case, but make sure you handle it. For example, 1abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz and 1abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwXYZ should not both match to the same firstbits 1abcd. The first one in the block chain should match to 1abcd and then second one should match to 1abcde. Just a thought.
They won't match, don't worry.  Whichever comes first will be the only one to match.  All comparisons/queries are made without regard to case.
6804  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mt. Gox Account Claim Rejected Twice? What next? on: July 01, 2011, 02:35:59 AM
If it was rejected, there is obviously a discrepancy in the data.  Contact support, sure, but I wouldn't assume that he has his information straight.  Maybe his ISP switched him to a new dynamic IP between the time of the hack and now?
6805  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: WHY IS TRADEHILL DOWN TRIED TO BUY BITCOIN on: July 01, 2011, 02:11:59 AM
JUST TRIED TO BUY SOME COINS AND THE TRADEHILL SITE WAS DOWN AND SAID IT WOULD BE BACK IN A COUPLE OF DAYS. WHERE DO I GO TO BUY SOME COINS?
Don't use instant buy.  Place an order.
6806  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FirstBits.com - remember and share Bitcoin addresses on: July 01, 2011, 02:07:04 AM
netrin - input the FULL bitcoin address that you wish to shorten, and it will automatically find the shortest firstbits that can be associated with that address.

Example:  http://firstbits.com/18TKNbSLTrd3a2W8mtoH5uNzFhWRWNcuHU

EDIT:  The cutoff is at 24 chars.  Anything longer than 24 chars, and it knows that it is not a firstbits address, but a full bitcoin address, so it converts the input to the shortest possible firstbits address.  Anything shorter than 24 chars, and it knows that it is a firstbits address, and will look for the associated full bitcoin address.
6807  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you really want a Currency or a Speculation vehicle? on: July 01, 2011, 02:04:44 AM
Trying to peg bitcoin to something is like trying to peg gold to something.

Good luck.

6809  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proposal for a physical bitcon "wallet" on: July 01, 2011, 12:41:18 AM
Regarding the touchscreen, I think thats the wrong way to go. In my mind, this device should be the simplest possible design. Using a touchscreen would be like trying to compete with phones, why? You will only consume more power without any added funcionality. The wallet only needs an alphanumeric display, hopefully a very low consumption lcd, not a graphics display.

In my mind, a wallet should not be fancy, but simple, secure, and hopefully zero defect design. The less variables you introduce, the easier to reach that objective. I really think of Casio as my business model. They sell calculators and watches that have zero programming defects. In the last 20 years they sell basically the same thing, and it works. Why? Beacuse they do what they promise. Allways. And they are cheap, consume little power, are durable, and so on.

A wallet should also have the same paradigm. The funcionality is well known, the bitcoin protocoll should be more or less the same, it will not change much over the years.

To me this is a totally opposite business model as phones. The less fancy complexity, the better. You should make a strong, very strong statement as to being different from phones and computers. Why? Beacuse phones and computers allready run bitcoin, and they are expensive and not secure. The less things in common you have with phones and computers, the easier to create a market for the product.

What you want to communicate is inexpensive simplicity, reliablity, and security. A casio Bitcoin Wallet.

I am not a developer nor a designer, but If I were developing the device, I would spend most of my time thinking of how to remove functionality and complexity from my device (casio model), as opposed to how to add funcionality and complexity (the phone bussiness model).
Completely agree.  There is no need for a touchscreen, and I think it would actually be an annoyance more than a benefit.  I would much rather "type" on a device with physical keys, even if it means a smaller screen.  At least when it comes to a physical bitcoin wallet, that is.
6810  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proposal for a physical bitcon "wallet" on: June 30, 2011, 10:51:23 PM
Do it!  Given the interest in other novelty projects for bitcoin-related items (bitcoins in resin, bitcoin rings, etc), I wouldn't be surprised to see people jump on something like this like a dog on a... hot dog.

Perhaps the most important item of business is a security audit of the distro used.  People would like assurances that nothing funny was going on in the code in the background.  Not sure how you would be able to provide such an assurance, but it's definitely something to consider.

Prosper.com is a great place to get a microloan too BTW.  Funding took about a week to reach my bank account after the loan was approved and fully funded.  I think it's a great project anyway...
6811  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proposal for a physical bitcon "wallet" on: June 30, 2011, 10:44:20 PM
I know of many people in the past who have mentioned it would be a good idea to get dedicated hardware for running a bitcoin wallet.  Seems like an excellent idea to me as well.  I can't say that I'd buy one, but I might.  Smiley
6812  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Found an old Radeon X1300/1550 on: June 30, 2011, 09:07:44 PM
No.  Only 3xxx series and above ATI cards can utilize OpenCL.
6813  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners quitting en masse -- so it begins. on: June 30, 2011, 09:05:59 PM
Let's see....

$1100 worth of equipment I wouldn't have purchased otherwise.
1900MH/s, equivalent to $20.88/day at current market rates.
Equivalent to $626.40/month.
Less $100/month in electricity (give or take $25, I know it's around there though) equals $526.40.

At worst, I expect the hardware will be worth half of what I bought it for a year from now.  So I'll lose $550 in a year.  That's only $45.83/month I need to keep up on.

So I have $526.40 of pure profit per month at the current price/difficulty ratio, and you're worried about me not accounting for my $45 in depreciation every month?

Enough with the FUD already.  Seriously.
6814  Other / Off-topic / Convert random file into image on: June 30, 2011, 07:43:56 PM
Say I wanted to take a data file (like an excel file), and display it as an image.  I would imagine that it would just look like a bunch of white noise, but I've always been curious to see what kind of patterns develop.  I've already converted some excel files and other files to audio in the past, so I've listened to pictures and spreadsheets.  Anyway, how would I go about opening a file in a format that wouldn't cause an error (e.g. "This is not a valid .jpg format").  May a RAW?  Or BMP?

No, please disallow signatures. They are annoying.
Bit of a miswording in your poll there...  you don't want to disallow signatures entirely, do you?

6818  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [1 BTC BOUNTY] A way to use sendmany on: June 30, 2011, 05:51:11 PM
Provided codler's or jav's solution works for me, the bounty has been claimed.  If they both work, I will pay them each half of the bounty, since they are both good solutions.

Not to butt in too much, but since I have the answer to the question you had for xenland, here's a working pool running his code:  http://mine.tenobis.com/
6820  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [1 BTC BOUNTY] A way to use sendmany on: June 30, 2011, 05:37:27 PM
Thanks jav.  I can't give that a try right at the moment (will have to wait about 12 hours before I get home and can try it), but hopefully that will work.  If it does, I'll send you your 1 BTC.

Codler, I wish, but there is no sendmany function built in to bitcoin-php.  The project was abandoned a couple of months back because the dev didn't have time to update it, and that was before sendmany was built in as an rpc command.

Unless, you have some php files I don't have...  in which case, let me know where you got them!

He's just using jsonRPCclient directly, which should work.
Sheesh, is it really that simple?  Well I hope to try it soon.  That would be great if it worked that cleanly.

Does anyone know if there is a practical maximum to the number of addresses I can put in a sendmany request?  I've read a couple of posts about bitcoind locking up around 30 addresses or so, but I'm not sure if that was just an initial bug, or if it still exists and I shouldn't try to send to more than that at the same time.
