This may only apply to Bitmain but...

For one of my large orders in 2013, and also 2014 I discussed this with Bitmain.. They specifically do not declare HTC codes since they do not want to get in any disagreements with countries over the declaration, I even asked multiple times to have my shipments declared with a specific code I know works for customs in the US and they said they would not..

With respect to the "duty" I see some people paying, even if marked with a code that does not require duty there is a customs processing fee imposed by UPS for processing, this is a fee paid to them for the privilege of UPS importing the goods. I have also had to pay it for $2500+ plus shipments from FedEx and DHL, but not for all shipments..

that is not a valid argument from Bitmain since other companies, SPT in particular, DID show a specific code and it never was a problem.

is https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/calculator a good place to calculate ROI? i keep messing with this thing and still cant find ROI.....everytime i do it im in the hole $700+ after 200+ days. these things need to be cheaper. and with the reliability issues of late, i think im better off just buying a bunch of btc and seeing if it increases in value over those 200 days...when stuff lasts 2 weeks and burns up or fails..... that means it is total crap!

I'm curious...  Does your electricity rate per kWh need to be cheaper?

5.9 cents a KW. which is low for most of the USA....

And you can't see ROI?

Can you not see future price of bitcoin going up considerably just before the block halving?

Of course, I have plans on moving soon to an area with $0.0285 to $0.0325 per kWh.  That's the main reason I'm loading up on rigs.  However, I'm not moving until I have 200+ S7's.  It could be end of July [After block halving] or it could be the last quarter of 2016.  It depends on how certain things play out as to the timing of my move.

you are probably talking about S7 hypothetically, but I don't see it being a good large scale investment by summer, although with low electricity cost, who knows. I am pretty sure we will have at least 0.1-0.15J/Gh machines by then (S9?)
One thing is clear: unless speed of diff rises significantly decreases, buying btc directly would be more productive with zero overhang and maintenance cost.
6904  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: January 06, 2016, 07:51:20 PM
Here is a previous shipment of 9 x S7's with the Duty Class Code Number: 8523.51.00 Semiconductor media: Solid-state non-volatile storage devices....................... No............. Free  Which see:

Here is a copy of the bill from UPS on that shipment of 9 x S7's with the classification of 8523.51.00.  Notice there was no "Duty Amount" because it was FREE on this shipment.

The whole damn thing just pisses me off.  I think someone in customs that day saw "BITCOIN MINER" and was like, "What the hell is that?"  I'll just label it under "Other" and charge 2.6%.

You can bet your ass I'm disputing this with customs.

I just got a bill from UPS for the first time also. Mine was classified as 8487.90.0080. Do you have a link to the Duty Class manual? Have you contacted UPS yet? It appears that UPS reps are randomly classifying the miners and imposing a duty.

now "other" seems to be 3.9% fee. Why is this not a computer or computer part? Not sure about silicon storage device-even that is better.
Honestly, this is what Bitmain should be doing (providing a valid tariff code to customs)
Spondoolies was providing HS code to customs last year: 8471-7000 (I checked and it appears to correspond to Storage units without further classification).
8523.51.00 seems to be essentially the same as SPT code above, so either should be good as they describe the same thing.
6905  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: January 06, 2016, 01:02:56 AM
Bitmain's BM1384 chart notes 325MHz at 750mV, so running 350MHz is pretty decent. And 350MHz should average you 19.25GH. Which by my estimates would be about WU 268. So it sounds like you're pretty much right on target. Most people can't get sticks too far past 400MHz at 800mV. Recall the S5 "defaults" to 800mV (from a 12V source, assuming balanced nodes) and its stock clock is 350MHz.

Whether you set voltage and increase clock or set clock and decrease voltage really depends on what you want to accomplish. If you want the most hashrate for a given power output, or just the absolute most hashrate, will have different strategies.

I want to beat the Gekkoscience stick hashrate (Gh/s on 24hr average) world record, everything else is secondary...
Max does not count  Grin...cheers

thanks to everybody who helped this stick newb with cgminer.
finally cgminer-gekko is working and I can manipulate the stick at various settings.

quick questions:

1. do you have to do sudo reboot everytime you change something in hardware setup? it looks like this to me.
2. 800mv/433 mhz somehow resulted in stick not initializing, but it initialized OK with wiper at 3pm (750-760mv?) at 350mhz.

Q: which course of action is generally better: keep mv same (750) and see up to which mhz it will initialize OR increase mv to max (800) and then see which mhz will work?

It looks like even at 750/350 stick fluctuates wildly between 16 and 24Gh/s with average ~19 Gh/s (WU 265).
In my crazy setup watts and amperage from hub are not a problem.
6907  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: January 05, 2016, 03:30:44 AM
I understand that cgminer works for most, but it is in reverse for me:

bfgminer works beautifully, on all sticks, both on pi zero and pi2 revB, but cgminer-gekko does not work on pi and on linux PC.
maybe once they worked on bfgminer, then sticks have some setting change, but I doubt it. It remains a mystery.

I have cgminer-gekko compiled and built (kudos to aarons6) .
watch for cgminer-gekko-rev2 instead of cgminer-gekko directory that is being built after you untar cgminer-gekko.tar.gz file.
Yes, you can see this (that it is going to cgminer-gekko-rev2) if you keep staring at the screen as it is being done, but I didn't (initially).
once cgminer was done and I can see that it could connect to stratum.mining.eligius.st (and see blocks), the following command was shown:

Gekko detect (1:13) failed to initialize (incorrect device?)

Back to bfgminer and everything works again.
A bummer.

Have to think and try again.

Trying again by moving from raspberry to (finally!) uefi installed Ubuntu 15.10 on Win 8.1 PC.

However when loading libjannson-dev it says E: unable to locate the package libjannson-dev

Why/ is this really needed?

should I go ahead trying to build cgminer without this package and why it could be unavailable?

EDIT: tried to load the same package in raspbian-no go as well

Can someone independently test if this (libjannson-dev) went missing for some reason?

It's libjansson-dev

Thanks..stupid typo.
However, after everything (including going to gekko file) loaded:

cd cgminer-gekko results in
bash: cd: cgminer-gekko: No such file or directory

Once you do make you should be in the folder already just ./cgminer-gekko

i did not even get to make....following page 60 (since there is little about building cgminer now on page 1).
I did this:
Code:
wget http://gekkoscience.com/misc/cgminer-gekko.tar.gz

tar xvzf cgminer-gekko.tar.gz
bunch of things happen
then (at the prompt):

Code:
cd cgminer-gekko
which resulted in error message:

bash:cd: cgminer-gekko: No such file or directory

EDIT: i have done it now both on pi and on Ubuntu 15.10/win 8.1 machine (in Ubuntu) with the same error message.
I am wondering, why?

Biodom - I don't know how to forum very well. What kind of 2.0 bridge are your using?  I think mine is an iogear I got from frys.com like 1.5 years ago.  I'll see about the superbag, glad to know your git it to work  at least the pi is recognizing the stick over usb  I can't even use kbd or mouse on 3.0!!; (but RaspNicBit works fine??!?!)

Thanks!!!

I used cheap Sabrent usb 2.0 as a bridge and connected keyboard, mouse, kanex usb to ethernet adapter (got it at microcenter; it is only needed for pi zero, no need for it if you use pi2) and Superbpag usb 3.0 powered hub to it. i used either kootek 5V 2.5A powersupply or canakit 2.5A powersupply for zero and pi2. Make sure that superbpag is powered, otherwise sticks will suck so much power that pi restarts.
I used sabrent specifically because rasp pi description said NOT to use usb 3.0 with keyboard and mouse (something about slow devices).
sabrent:
http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-4-Port-Individual-Switches-HB-UMLS/dp/B00BWF5U0

SUCCESS!!!

The Superbpag hub runs beautifully on standard Raspberrian w/cgminer-gekko installed.  Ran it through an unplugged powered 2.0 hub.  I may try direct later jyst to see.  Thank ypu very much!! (the Sabrent arrives tomorrow, and the 3 more compacs arrive Mon)

Glad it worked out for you. Where are you getting sticks? I thought that they are sold out/almost sold out by now?

I say pay it, but then dispute it at the customs agency if you think you shouldnt be paying it.  i mean, could be worse, i have a 330$cad bill for just ONE (canada).  disputing it, but we shall see what that does...

Yes, I'm paying it to avoid the 6% late fee for every 2 weeks it's late.  However, I'm most certainly disputing it.

Ok, so it is ~$38.5/unit.
Any reasoning on their part for this? Brokerage fees?
6913  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: January 01, 2016, 08:13:43 PM
At 700MHz they're pretty much tapped out, and overclocking is not an option until we figure out how to control voltage. My OG S7s run at 6TH/s in comparison with overclocking.

I totally agree with you.  I'm coming close to making the decision to go ahead and under clock these back to 600 MHz from the 700 MHz factory setting.  If I'm not mistaken, the batch 6 (135 chips) were clocked at 600 MHz and hashed at 4.0 TH/s?  I'm thinking about treating the new 135 chip rigs as batch 6 and under clock all of them to 600 MHz for longevity.

I got batch 6...it is totally stable being overclocked to 625, a bit less stable (or maybe less efficient?) at 650, so I will try either of these two instead of just 600, if you have room on PSU. The funny thing, if you remember as everyone was saying that B1 "likes' heat-~60C. In my observation, B6 "likes" being cold-I got better speed and less errors at 41-45C (same goes for B7, interestingly).

625-4.15-4.2 TH (1090W at the wall); 4.3 TH at 650 (1150W)

Biodom or Anyone else,

Help me remember...  Did Batch 6 have 135 chips or 162 chips?  My question was never really answered about number of chips.  I'm curious if I would get similar efficiency with under clocking as Biodom mentions here with Batch 6 but similar with Batch 8?

sorry, others already answered (135). So far B6 is doing well at 625 (~4.18Th average) with low power use (~0.26 J/Gh).
Re underclocking...I am sure that it does not pay to underclock right now from the profitability point of view. However, machine reliability is a whole another story. I had difficulty pushing B6 past 650, so I am amazed that they made essentially the same machine (B8) work (mostly) at 700.
Someone had made a spreadsheet in SP20 thread that calculated the optimal speed vs profitability, but in Sp20 there was a big difference in efficiency vs speed. S7 is quite profitable right now (if you are not taking hardware cost into consideration) based just on electricity usage. However, with current difficulty increases, it might run out of steam at 0.1/kwh by summer. That's where downclocking might give it a month or two extra and then they will be sold to super low electricity cost areas.
6914  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: December 31, 2015, 08:25:32 PM
779 is definitely from "batch 2". Strange that its voltage was set low. Every stick we've run out got tested at 200MHz, so the voltage was set to 640-650mV by either Novak or I before sending out. Maybe someone messed with it? Looks pretty good now.

i thought (mistakenly) that default was 225mhz. Anyway, all of my sticks (five batch1 and 4 batch 2) had wiper on ~10pm and worked fine at ~11gh on usb 3.0, which, of course, can support 650mv. I tried to turn one stick wiper to 12pm and issued

--set compac:clock=250

, but somehow it did not work in that bfgminer did not "jump"on it-said no sticks recognized.
i don't want to mess the whole thing up, so tried only with one stick.

OT: still trying to double boot my Windows 8.1 PC with either Debian or Linux-this UEFI thingie-what nonsense! i learned to completely disable safeboot and fast boot, but then UEFI stick does not work, only CD works, and then computer completely crashes in the end and debian partition is unavailable (grub does not load). Decided to just basically backup PC (1gb external Toshiba is just $54.99 from Microcenter), then disable all safeboot/fastboot, leave just legacy and try for the last time plus use boot repair stick (as I saw grub partition, but for some stupid reason it won't load). If it would not work, last resort is just to buy cheap win7 off the ebay and proceed from there.

You don't need hidapi for the Compac driver.

does not matter i could not get bfgminer to work with unbuntu 12.04 nor lbuntu 15.04 either

so no idea how to do such..no real instructions i can find....the ones i got for bfgminer at the previous post(s) came up errors etc on the install

so probably should just forget it ..this was with me NO installing hidapi etc

I've got a couple of raspberry pi's can't be any worse trying to get it on them (both versions whichever folk recommend the pi B+ 512 and the new pi B 1mb version)

hell ...silly me ....I thought it would be easy to just load either bfgminer or cgminer on my unbuntu 12.04 compaq evo n800v laptop

but seems a NO GO ...

so anyway ..is there a link someone can point me to with an SD image of minera or some such that is running some gekko 8gh usb sticks?

otherwise as a newbie I'm at a loss ...just following the install instructions don't seem to get me anyplace

Dude...if you want to use pi and bfgminer, just follow this  EXACTLY and it should work (it worked for me for both pi zero and pi2 revB):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOLDrSiI_ic
follow the video or the following commands
in text:

In pi terminal window:

Step 1: Update to latest Version (here and elsewhere issue one command at the time, then issue next command when prompted[at the prompt])
Code:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude upgrade

Step 2: Install Libraries
Code:
sudo apt-get install libusb-1.0-0-dev libcurl4-gnutls-dev libjansson-dev uthash-dev libncurses5-dev libudev-dev autoconf automake libtool pkg-config screen

Step 3: Get BFGMiner
Code:
git clone git://github.com/luke-jr/bfgminer
cd bfgminer

Step 4 Configure the Software for Compiling (here and elsewhere you would have to answer Y to several questions)
Code:
./autogen.sh
./configure
make
exit

Step 5 Reboot pi (with everything connected and under power)

Code:
reboot
or sudo reboot

Step 6:Run BFGMiner
(stay in the bfgminer software[cd bfgminer takes care of this] then use below command changing caps to your settings.)
Code:
cd bfgminer
screen -S Mining ./bfgminer -o stratum+tcp://POOL.com:PORT -u USER -p PASSWORD

Example in Eligius and Burger address

Code:
screen -S Mining ./bfgminer -o stratum.mining.eligius.st:3334 -u 1BURGERAXHH6Yi6LRybRJK7ybEm5m5HwTr_yoursticksname -p x

yoursticksname=whatever you want, but try to be simple (OPstick would suffice)

when it is mining Q (on the keyboard) to quit (when you want to restart), then make sure you are still in bfgminer directory.
6917  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: December 31, 2015, 04:49:09 AM
Long, rambling, sorry.  TL;DR - logistics assistance requested to initiate 4xCompac mining on a cheaply powered CPU without incurring too much more in the way of additional expenditures.  See below for what has already been purchased and where the bottleneck is (hint - UK cheap computer for $5)

I hope this hits the right thread. (fingers crossed)

NOOB here to mining, Gekko Compacs, and PI..  Yes there will be no ROI, not looking to make a profit, but looking to sink as little as possible into it even tho its fun.

So I found the thread, and while I can't afford an S7, I found the Compac here in the states for my son for Christmas.  And getting it running was a hoot, drove her up to 17.85GH/s and have made a whopping 12 cents in my 48+ hours of mining lol.  So, I got bit by the bug, and dropped for three more, two USB fans to cool them with, and an Anker 60w 7port USB 3.0 powered hub with an extra three charging ports.  YAY!  But of course I have to have the computer on 24x7 to keep her mining, which decreases what meager profit there might be, etc etc etc

Then I found the PI 0.  $5 NBD right?  Got the HDMI and USB adapters for another 8, bought a nice wood case with heatsink for another 8, bought a 128gb SD for 65 for the blockchain, money's flying out the window at this point.  I think I'm approaching the cost of the XB1 my son got for Christmas because *I* have been bitten by the bug.  Anker works fine on the laptop, not so much with the Pi 0.

Yes, have searched, googled, bing'd (I feel dirty, but at least it wasn't yahoo) and searched this thread.  And all over the 'net RPIs are notoriously poor when it comes to 3.0 support, but 3.0 power 900ma is what I Need to overclock!  Oh I can spend $75 from China on a monster 2.5a/port x 20 ports that will take a month and and then some to arrive, just to run 4 Compacs?  I can't find an inline 10 port USB 2.0 that will go > 500ma in specs (whether it will allow you to do 1000ma every other port or not in reality I haven't found), and since I have the RPI 0, daisy chaining 3 -> 2 -> PI doesn't work, whether or not the 2 is powered.  I can GET the Compac recognized in the 2 while powered, haven't tried running (was going 310mhz @ approx 740mv I think - but she was stable, hot but stable) - but even if she does work the layout wont allow for 4 sticks + 2 fans + a power line for the RPI 0.  I can get the nic/mouse/kbd daisy-chained to an unpowered 2.0 hub off the powered 2.0 hub, but i just can't see how I'm going to get it all to work together.

So, I can return the Anker (btw I love Anker products, its the RPI 0 that I have issue with), but the only inline properly oriented USB 2.0 10 port hubs on Amazon all specifically say NOT FOR ASIC MINING and warn max output is 500ma (which I don't even think is enough to power the RPI 0 which I believe takes 700ma).

Even with 10 ports and Y bridges on 2.0 you're looking at having to daisy chain two of them together which is... drumroll.... about $70 (at least its in the USA and can be shipped from Amazon - but I haven't sourced the bridges/y-adapters yet)

I could B+ maybe, some in this thread have gotten it to work, but nothing on the poor 0.  I haven't opened the 128gb SD yet so I can still take that back, the fans are amazon so I could return them, for a fee that makes them might as well keepers, and the sticks are already en route from Canada, so no refunds there.

I'm at a loss...  Ideas?  Anyone?  Bueller?

i guess you did not find my post on pi zero somewhere earlier.
We are probably two people who tried zero, most are using pi 2 (which also works in configuration outlined below).
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1173963.msg13098911#msg13098911

setup is described there ^^^ and in followup posts.
Several things:
1. maybe usb 2.0 bridge is not needed, i don't know.
2. your pi will be up in the air as cables are much more formidable that the pi 0 itself.
3. Exact same Anker did not work for me either, but 7 slot 70W USB 3.0 Superpag (Amazon delivers this one pretty fast; many others used this hub as well) definitely works with 4, maybe 5 sticks (did not try more) on pi zero using bfgminer.

Cheers

Hi Guys - I need help on upgrading FW on the S7s to the latest ones.
The Bitmain support page lists a number of FW for different S7 batches and I need 2nd pair of eyes to double check which FW goes to which S7.

My current list as follows:

1. 4.73TH/v.1.32 (700Mhz) - Batch 8
2. 4.46TH/v.2.0 (600Mhz) - Batch ?
3. 4.66TH/v.1.7 (600Mhz) - Batch ?
4. 4.66TH/v.1.7 (600Mhz) - Batch ?
5. 4.73TH/v1.31 (700Mhz) - Batch 8

Appreciate any help.

Regards
TMT

I second the opinion ^^^^: why upgrade? It's fine w/o.

Partially OT, but in pursuit of running a stick: wasted all my free time today trying to make a double boot Windows 8.1/Debian Jessie machine and so far could not. Live Debian works, but when I install full version either using DVD OR making USB from netinstall, everything works peachy until grub2 does not show up and system instead boots into Windows. I followed a dozen leads, looked into BIOS, tried to make advised changes to boot process, NOTHING.

If anybody had problems with this that they overcame-I am all ears.

that said, a bunch of sticks work fine on rasp pi, i just wanted to try on debian since i have one hub that does not work with pi and i don't want to bother with drivers on windows- i will, of course, if it comes to that.

Yea, some times it can be a pain.... try the the free version of EasyBCD in Windows to edit the boot to add debian, it makes it so much easier.

much thanks, will definitely try tomorrow (it's late now in my time zone).
