6943  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I found a paper wallet on a beach ... seriously on: August 21, 2022, 10:19:20 AM
Joke's on you, that's where I store my barrels full of millions of dollars, not my bitcoin back ups! Wait... Tongue
That brings me on another thought (I'm on a roll today): those barrels with money are only meant to distract thiefs from digging further, where they'd find my private keys Tongue

I am more than happy that all of my off site back up locations are incredibly secure and are highly unlikely to be found by anyone either accidentally or deliberately looking for them.
Yeah, I feel pretty secure with my setup too, so there's no "canary" involved either.
6944  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I found a paper wallet on a beach ... seriously on: August 21, 2022, 09:32:22 AM
Yeah, that's a good point. I also have a number of back ups stored off site, as everyone should. These backs ups are obviously highly secured and incredibly unlikely to end up on a beach somewhere (not to mention that no single back up is enough to compromise any of my wallets), but at the same time, I obviously don't check on these back ups every day. It is possible, however unlikely, that I would lose one of my back ups and not realize for a period of weeks. There is no telling how diligent or otherwise the true owner of these coins might be, and it could very well be months or even years before they realize that their paper wallet is lost.
Just a thought: you could add a "canary": a very simple unencrypted paper wallet with private key QR-code and instructions how to claim it. If someone finds it, you lose the small amount, but you'll know your backup is compromised without driving into the desert to check and digging a hole at N34 59 20, W106 36 52 each time.
6945  Other / Meta / Re: Does the forum need more merit sources? on: August 21, 2022, 09:16:48 AM
This is true from one perspective and can be wholy acceptable if the only reason for merit is for rank up. For instance you are the most merited in the forum and yet you receive more merits, that is because every post you drop is quality. It therefore means that at the abundance of merit sources, merits would tend to flow to a certain group of people (the quality posters).
I don't need more Merit from more Merit sources, but I'm pretty sure it will happen if there are more. So my assumption is the "ratio" of Merit distribution to users stays the same, that's why I looked at the end of users who still need to rank up.

But isn't that the main purpose of merit, to stop shitposters from ever reaching higher ranks? So if decent and above members have no issues of ranking up, there is enough merit going around.
Exactly. Unfortunately, I don't have data on this (and it's kinda subjective).

And that merit sources, in that kind of threads, when someone is missing for example 30 merits to rank up, if they see that he is a decent poster they give them to him right away.
I was thinking of (hypothetical) users who need say 400 more Merit to rank up.

What are the odds that the guy with access to my account was also the seller?
About 100%.

I also was the n00b here who hired an expert who I was hoping would offer such advice and keep the deal secure.
Unfortunately, not many "escrows" take that job seriously while they take a considerable payment for something as simple as reading a few messages and sending one transaction.

Isn't that something a escrow provider should at least show some effort in trying to do?
I tried, but clearly it failed Sad I'd offer to do it myself, but I don't want to dox myself to handle physical goods.

The difference with importaddress is, this method can create an HD watching-only wallet.
Thanks, I didn't catch that part. That does make it worth the effort. Allow me to add more Merit.

@OP: can you fix the img links, so the images show up when you reach Jr. Member (only 10 posts to go)?

Refund me atleast 330 how staff says it
"Staff" has nothing to do with this. Maybe this is a good moment to ask for "source of funds", like a bank would do. I'm pretty sure you scammed the money from someone else.

This "proof of payment" is only valid between buyer and seller, and meaningless to everyone else.
True, but since the other party didn't contest it and more or less confirmed it in their own thread, I don't doubt this transaction happened between those two users.
6949  Other / Meta / Re: Does the forum need more merit sources? on: August 21, 2022, 07:00:06 AM
If I were theymos, I wouldn't make the merit status permanent or semi permanent, I would be rotating it for unserious merit sources, while those that spend all available smerits and even ask for more would remain and even have larger allocations.
That has happened, at some point all Merit sources got a new amount based on their Merit distribution: if they sent a lot, they got a lot more. If they were inactive, they got less or were removed.

The question whether or not we need more Merit sources basically comes down to: "Do we think users rank up fast enough?", or better: "Are there users left out from ranking up even though they shouldn't be?".
I think this is much more important than the total Merit distribution.

I have 13.33 GiB of such. Plain text. Nothing found. Ppl switched to random wallets.
Was the address in the OP in your list already? If so: did someone else beat you to it, or did you only find it later?
6951  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: $500 exchange scam on: August 20, 2022, 08:44:53 PM
OP, from the screenshot you posted, in one of your replies you said this: "Give me proof  it's me and take money I m not dsadsa and I don't know who is this".
I'll give you a proof. This is the transaction ID sent by dsadsa: https://mempool.space/tx/c306113746b9cf78d6823ee75260ad311d612f0ae3c145207bccf71b2fdb5e44
Which was replaced by this one: https://mempool.space/tx/e5e783122e3c2dcd3b4ec3b1ed5533fe3b0438512c5597625351d0f108737c7f
The coins were sent to this address: bc1qtey6w27temcjdsv5uaglfa97d3a56flfv6w7eh which was used as input in the transaction you shared as proof of payment (it's your address)

So, can you explain why someone you don't even know who he is (sdasda) sent you $500 worth of bitcoin?
Don't you love the blockchain? Cheesy

Should I send the difference back or punish this little scammer for what he did? I cannot be the first victim, nor the last one.
Now that's an interesting ethical question I don't have a direct answer for.

OP was connected to the scammer, the "extra" funds that he sent he sent to gain my trust and scam a lot more in the future from me. That or something went wrong and he couldn't double spend like with the previous account. His money will be donated.
Do you know how long it took between the transaction and confirmation? We've had many blocks recently, and double spending isn't a guaranteed game indeed.

I see, right now I'm 100% sure the money he sent me he scammed from someone else so I have decided to donate those money to an animal shelter (I love cats). If I send the coins back to him he will keep on doing what he does best, scam people out of their hard earned money.
I'd say don't refund him yet. Maybe you'll be able to find earlier victims if you trace back where the funds came from. Refunding them is much more satisfying.

@Deonnn: Since you so clearly got busted with on-chain evidence, do you mind playing open cards here? Be honest, come clean, share your experiences as a scammer with the Bitcointalk community. I'd love to see inside a scammer's mind!

Rather than the former = the latter is it a more apt alternative to assume the latter purchased the former domain and pointed it to the current Chipmixer destination? Just a guess.
You're missing the point. The Atob-site forwards to the phising/scam domain, not the real ChipMixer.com site.

its just like we are throwing merit away to banned account where it can never be sent to anyone.
From your perspective, Merit may look scarce. But from the forum's perspective, it can be created as much as needed.

I know I would appreciate a heads-up, maybe something like this:

The [β] BPIP Extension: user info & extra features add-on/extension, Firefox/Chrome can show this under the username.

Starting point of the week to avoid loading the large index page: Trust list for: The Pharmacist (Trust: +28 / =3 / -0) (DT1! (30) 4449 Merit earned) (Trust list) (BPIP).

I got good news tho, please read the section at the bottom of the original post.
How sure are you?

I am not convinced that any of the characteristics you have listed are enough to make a definitive link between these two accounts. It seems to me that there is a not insignificant chance that you have just stolen $500 worth of bitcoin from an innocent third party.
My thoughts exactly. Even though it sounds likely, is (for instance) 80% really enough for this?

There's much more than that going on in this case. Say for example, how high are the chances that someone will pay a 5% fee for a crypto <-> crypto exchange when they can use KuCoin to do that for a much lower fee?
I guess it depends on how often you do these trades. If you do it several times per day, it could be a coincidence. If you rarely do it, they're likely the same.
Even instant exchangers can do such a trade at 0.5 to 1% fee.

I am still verifying the transactions tho and I am going somewhere with it, like the scammers address being connected with the second persons address.

Question

I have a file (300 MB) with 8.9 million Bitcoin addresses. I also have a directory (67 GB) with all Bitcoin addresses. I want to know which address from the file is in the direcory more than once.

I use this:
Code:
grep -hf addresses.txt alladdys/* | sort | uniq -d > output.txt
For small lists of addresses, this works fine! However, with the 300 MB list, grep takes 94% of my 16 GB RAM, and there doesn't seem to be any progress. I didn't expect grep would use this much memory for a 300 MB file.
What would be a better solution?

How did you lose money? Did you pay him while your incoming transaction had 0 confirmations?
The part where his first transaction didn't confirm should have been a dead giveaway: it was double spent.

as long as we can save someone else from falling for the same scam it's all good.
Never trust an unconfirmed transaction from an untrusted source.
