6961  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Best Hard Drive for Bitcoin Node? on: August 08, 2021, 07:47:50 PM
did changing the port / cable work?
I decided to test it for 3 days before final confirmation so one more day left, but so far it looks like it was probably a faulty cable, I replaced it with brand new I had at home.
Just in case, I changed the port connection as well, but I doubt that was the issue in my case.

WD Red (non-pro version) is good option, it's widely available and some enthusiast use it (usually people who hoard data or run their own physical server). It has 3 years warranty.
WD Red is on my list already, but I had to crashes with my HDD after I cleaned and replaced everything.
Temperature looks fine, I scanned my drive multiple times, defragmented it, tested for bad sectors, double checked bios settings... and crossed my fingers.
6962  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Problem if I don't upgrade wallet on: August 08, 2021, 07:37:24 PM
What if I don’t upgrade the wallet? Still I can use it, it's not like a mandatory upgrare.
So, what can be wrong if I don’t upgrade the wallet if they require it? Am I risking anything?
Safepal hardware wallet code is closed source coming from China, so you purchased a cat in a bag and you don't know what is contained in those new code updates.
You could probably use the wallet even without updates, but some critical updates may be mandatory for normal functioning of device, or you can have old firmware that have bugs.
In some of their previous firmware upgrades they added important security updates so it will be wise to stay up to date.
Check out detailed upgrade history on their website page:

6963  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: 51% Attack on: August 08, 2021, 07:25:51 PM
And this was without any spamming beyond the baseline spam performed by Ayre and his companies to try to fake there being interest and usage of BSV.
I heard that most of transactions on bsv network are coming from their weather app, so it's basically something like spamming to show more transactions.
Calvin Ayre in the same time didn't miss to brag on twitter how FluffyPony was arrested, and that is some kind of punishment because he was against Craig Faketoshi...   Cheesy

I wonder if anyone has tried spamming this shitcoin's network with transactions that take too long to verify.
Nobody is crazy enough to waste time on this, and this is probably some miner war or some weird clan fighting to take full control of that shitcoin.
Meanwhile hashrate is still declining according to bitinfocharts.

6964  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Loads of fake peers advertised on bitcoin network on: August 08, 2021, 07:11:37 PM
We do not know who the spammers are but this might suggest that one of their objectives is learning information about the Bitcoin P2P network, esp. about its topology.
It smells (read stinks) to me that it could be some government agency, and this is happening in same time when they are pushing hard for some crazy bill regulations for Bitcoin and all crypto.
I can't prove anything but it could be they are collecting information for some tracking and surveillance of all nodes and transactions.

The conclusion interest me. Bitcoin have 12775 nodes
So is this number of nodes from Bitnodes more correct than Luke Dashjr version that is showing much more nodes?

6965  Other / Meta / Re: Banned Displaying signature. on: August 08, 2021, 06:49:29 PM
If I remember correctly this ronaldo40 guy was part of Adkinsbet group that purchased multiple forum accounts and promoted their website, but now decided to move with new betking.
I am not sure why he got signature ban, maybe because of spamming and unconstructive posts, but it was totally deserved and only moderators know the true reason.
Other accounts that he is controlling should also be checked for similar activity.

How exactly are you testing Hardware Wallets?
I guess you first need to have actual device in your hand (purchased or received for testing from manufacturer) and then try to reproduce the code.

So ... if you want to help, there is a ton to do from simple triage to compilation to design to spreading the word. Wink
I am helping in spreading the word about WalletScrutiny and I am monitoring hardware wallet changes, especially if they claim they are open source.
You can track that in my topics that is updated on regular basis like this one for example: LIST - Open Source Hardware Wallets.

6967  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Uruguayan Lawmaker Proposes Bill to Treat Crypto as Legal Tender on: August 07, 2021, 02:44:08 PM
This sounds closer to what Japan have already done, where Bitcoin is a legally recognised currency, but not legal tender.  People often confuse the two.  A currency can be accepted by a business if they choose.  Whereas legal tender must be accepted and businesses have no choice about that.  You can pay your taxes in legal tender, but can't pay them in other currencies.
Real question is what is better option for Bitcoin, to be legal currency or legal tender?
I don't know how many business in Japan officially accept Bitcoin, but I am sure that it will be more of them accepting BTC in El Salvador according to what you said about legal tender.
Nor exactly sure how this thing will play out in Uruguay and other countries, but regulations is changing so quickly and it's hard to follow it.
I would much rather have less government parasites, less rules, less regulations and more freedom, but it looks like many people can't or won't live like that.
6968  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: can multiple transactions from the same wallet be tracked to said wallet? on: August 07, 2021, 02:28:59 PM
if I have a wallet with 100$ and I sent out about 90ish transactions from said wallet, could someone check the ledger and identify said transactions came from the same source?
If you sent coins partially and used the same change address than it's trivial to connect all those addresses and identify they are coming from same source.
Sending all coins from multiple addresses is doing the same thing and reducing your privacy.

Okay, so if I sent transactions from an Electrum wallet (NO-KYC ON SENDER WALLET), to different addresses every transaction, as you should for anonymity, would the transactions be able to be linked together so they could be identified as all coming from the same electrum wallet to the receiving wallet?
Bitcoin is a public ledger so regular transaction can easily be linked together, but you can always use mixers like Chipmixer or coinjoin to break the connection for your coins.
You can generate and use many addresses in Electrum and you can keep them separately, and it's good to receive Bitcoin in new address each time.

6970  Economy / Economics / Re: Ukraine is the "island of crypto freedom" in Europe, what to expect ? on: August 07, 2021, 11:59:40 AM
Governments will allow people to use Bitcoin and other coins until they create and make their own virtual currencies that are totally controlled and tracked.
Problem is what will happen after that... very likely they will try to ban Bitcoin and say they can't control it or they will blame it because some hackers got paid in Bitcoin.
Never trust government, better wake up and understand that they are working for us and not the other way around, see what happened in United States with that latest crazy bill, same thing can happen all over the world soon.

Will Ukraine become "Crypto Switzerland" or "Island of Crypto Freedom"?
I don't have high hopes for something like this to happen, it's one thing on paper and it can be totally different thing in reality.
6971  Economy / Economics / Re: Enjoy comunism (II): Venezuela to cut 6 zeros from its currency on: August 07, 2021, 11:50:12 AM
Due some acquittances, I have quite decent information about what is up in Venezuela. One of the things that is happening is that obviously people are ignoring as much as possible the local currency. Whether bitcoin our USD, they are definitely  not getting to use the local coin regularly. The main exception are employees with salaries denominated in bolivars, in which case they have to undertake extra activities to make sure they  get to eat everyday or every other day anyway.
I heard that they have official and unofficial-real rate for exchanging their worthless bolivar paper money for other fiat currencies, but I bet there are many people on streets who are doing this exchanges just to survive.
It's crazy that something like this can happen to a country with such rich natural resources and position in world but greed and corruption knows no limits, and similar thing is not far away from US and other western countries.

The problem is that this country is going to swing from communist to a ferocious if not dictatorial regime which may solve some issues and create newer ones.
Isn't communism by it's definition already dictatorial system of governance, and we saw how that ended up in other countries.
China is moving to new age communism with complete totalitarian system of control, every segment of society is controlled and tracked, problem is that this ''virus'' is now spreading globally.
6972  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Square is considering making a hardware wallet for Bitcoin on: August 07, 2021, 09:13:14 AM
Hmm that makes sense. But I guess whether they make it open-source or not some Chinese businessmen are going to probably copy it anyway if it gets mainstream enough. Just like how we have fake iPhones despite Apple not being open source. Tech startups and tech businesses in general probably start businesses already expecting China to copy them at some point in the future.
I am following all hardware wallet market condition and so many of them popped up (and still popping up) that are claiming they are open source and coming from China that I would not be surprised to see something like this.
Some of them are mostly based on Trezor code BitHD, Prokey, OneKey, or Keystone (ex Cobo), HyperMate... but note that open source doesn't mean that something is automatically good.
Chinese population is over 1,4 Billion people, that is more than enough for Jack's dream of 100 Million HW owners, and if something like this happens to Trezor, imagine what will happen with Square 平方 HW  Cheesy
6973  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Best Hard Drive for Bitcoin Node? on: August 07, 2021, 08:58:13 AM
Watch out for the non-pro version of the 980. It is a DRAM-less drive. Although, you should be fine as long as you are not going to make large file transfers. It will last you a long time anyway.
Thanks for info about that.
Before I buy anything I am usually doing deep research, reading reviews, and since I have new motherboard that support newest NVMe I would prefer Gen4 for fastest speed, but they are not cheap.

I'll throw in my 2 sats too: In my experience, it's often the very cheap cable that's the culprit, and not the much more expensive drive. It always felt like a design flaw to rely on cheap connectors.
I really hope it was just a bad cable connection.
Last night I replaced cables with brand new and switched connection to different port on motherboard, so now I am testing to see if this crashes will continue to happen.

...
Thanks, I will check them out.
6974  Economy / Economics / Re: Enjoy comunism (II): Venezuela to cut 6 zeros from its currency on: August 06, 2021, 12:58:06 PM
There is a lot of communism and fascism today (that are not much different at all) even in so called democratic countries, and only difference is in stages.
When people realize they live in communism and dictatorial state it will be too late to change something and blood will be spilled already.
Cutting zeroes from their Venezuelan currency won't help them, and they can check history of all other countries that tried that strategy before, but imagine if they introduce Bitcoin as a legal tender (unlikely to ever happen).
6975  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Best Hard Drive for Bitcoin Node? on: August 06, 2021, 12:34:31 PM
Buy an SDD from Samsung. 970 Evo series drives are solid. ADATA was one of the first companies to cheat by replacing the controllers.
970 or 980 series for sure are my main pick.
I didn't know that about Adata, but that is probably the reason they are much cheaper than Samsung.

When you change the SATA cable also plug it in different SATA port on the Motherboard, also use another line with power connectors from the PSU,  check for bios updates. Check everything else before you consider the drive itself.
Bios updated with latest version today and drive crashed some time after that, so I am excluding any bios issue, but I am going to triple check all connection again.
6976  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Best Hard Drive for Bitcoin Node? on: August 06, 2021, 11:29:16 AM
I'll probably recommend you to just get a HDD. It's 2X cheaper and speed doesn't really matter for running a node anyways. Your HDD will be fast enough, unless you're consistently synchronizing from scratch or reindexing where speed makes a huge difference.
It is cheaper to buy HDD but they also have maximum two year warranty now for a reason, that means they break much more after that period, like in my case, and I don't want to buy new HDD every two years  Cheesy

1 TB should be good for the next few years. I am running my Bitcoin node with txindex (~34 GB) and blockfilterindex (~6.5 GB) enabled, and its data folder weighs ~425 GB in total. I am also running ElectrumX which takes up around 70 GB. A Lightning Network node takes up a negligible amount of space. By the time you need more storage, 2 TB SSDs should have become more affordable.
My idea was to use this new drive for running a node and for storing some unimportant data, files, videos and music, if drive have larger capacity than 1 TB.

If you have spare power/SATA cable, try replace existing power/SATA cable on your 4TB HDD.
I have spare sata cable, but weird thing is that I can't pinpoint what the heck is wrong with him and I don't think it's cables that I checked several times.
Now doing deep scanning and checking for bad sectors again.

If you plan to use the storage for various tasks (e.g. storing video and backup OS), HDD (for NAS, server or 24/7 usage) is better option. I use 3.5" HDD for running few full nodes without problem.
Please tell me one solid affordable HDD that has more than two year warranty and I may consider it.
I can get very good Samsung SSD with five year warranty easy.

Check your cables & connectors on the drive. Disconnections / reconnections are not the way drives usually die.
Listen, I am doing regular disc scanning checks and everything was fine until recently, now I got that Error message and Crystal Disk Info showed me Caution yellow message yesterday, so there is something wrong with drive itself.
I also did a duckduckgo search and found that disconnecting like that may be a sign of dying drive... Sad

If it was me I would split the difference and go with a 2TB Samsung SSD.
Well under $300 US I don't know where you live in the world or your financial situation, but they are all I have been using.
Samsung and Adata SSD are my first options if I decide to buy one more SSD.

6979  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Best Hard Drive for Bitcoin Node? on: August 06, 2021, 10:38:49 AM
What type of hard drive do you suggest for running full Bitcoin node, older technology HDD with big capacity or new technology SSD drives?

It seems that my 4TB HDD (not my main drive) may be dying soon as it started to disconnect and connect at random times, but health status is still good and I can't find any bad sectors or the source of problem except one software detecting there is one Uncorrectable ECC error.

My main SSD is used for operating system and software I use regulary, but I guess running a node have some effect on longevity of drives and I think they make them with lower warranty (mine expired) on purpose.

So my question: Is it better to buy new HDD with larger capacity or SSD with 1 or 2 TB, and what drives are you using for running your Bitcoin nodes?
6980  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Uruguayan Lawmaker Proposes Bill to Treat Crypto as Legal Tender on: August 05, 2021, 03:06:30 PM
Go Uruguay go!
I won't be happy about this news until I see this confirmed, but if this bill comes true than Uruguay will be the second Bitcoin domino that will create cascade of events around the world, all starting from South and Latin America.
Bitcoin Miners in Uruguay would still need a special permit from government but it's not as bad as in other countries like China that banned mining totally.
I am expecting that we are going to see political parties with some people complaining about this bill, in similar way like they did in El Salvador recently, I guess some people just love fiat currency more than Bitcoin.
