6961  Economy / Economics / Re: Why did you buy bitcoin? on: April 04, 2021, 07:46:32 AM
Sorry Guys.,   But I need An Answer
I believe some people will say they buy bitcoin because it is decentralized, and that bitcoin was built with open source codes, that it has no central authority. All these positive feedbacks about bitcoin are true, but not the reason why most of these people buy bitcoin, they are just an added advantage. The main reason most people buy bitcoin is because it is deflationary in design, its price do appropriate (increase), that is why people do fomo if the price of bitcoin is rising already.

at what price?
I do not think the price matters. There are people that were owning bitcoin already before its price get to $10, and there are people having it when its price was low. At $10000 when some people will think its price is already high, it even still surprised people and rose further. What matters is to hold and forget about it for over a long time.
6962  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Most Secure Method To Sweep Paper Wallet on: April 03, 2021, 09:07:51 PM
You need to use an offline computer, preferably a permanently airgapped one with a clean OS, import your private key there and sign a transaction on this airgapped computer, and then move the transaction to an online computer to be broadcast. There's a good post from LoyceV about this here, which I'll just link to rather than re-hashing all the information - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5318475.msg56389821#msg56389821. Make sure to verify your Linux and Electrum downloads before installing/using them.
I noticed one things about this method. The user can be able to make a transaction using the watch-only wallet and use the airgapped device to sign the transaction. The transaction can be any amount of bitcoin of choice owned, and yet the private key remains offline before and after the whole process.

Your are bang on correct. It's a very old paper wallet and I am not able to import it into any new hardware wallet. But I want to learn the most secure way to move said paper wallet into a Ledger.
Follow o_e_l_e_o post above.

<...>
But, in case the user is done using the paper wallet and wants to transfer the whole funds, can my method above be used if bitaddress.org is run offline? Normally, the private key will still be exposed online on electrum, but the user will send the total bitcoin amount to an address on his hardware wallet, and not using the paper wallet again.
6963  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to prevent lost of 2FA key on: April 03, 2021, 07:22:37 PM
Almost 5 years I have not used GA. I use Authy for the security of my account. I don't know if GA can be duplicated to other phones, but Authy can. You only need to remember the password with your email. I don't know this is a plus or a minus. Maybe if you lose your phone it will be easier to get backups.
With the latest update on google 2fa, you can make a QR code backup of the sites you want to. All you need to do is to:
  • Open the google 2fa
  • Click on the three dots at the top right corner
  • Click on transfer accounts you want to backup
  • Click on export accounts
  • Making sure all the site you make authentication for are marked
  • Then click on next

You will see a QR code, you can backup the QR code which consist of all the sites you selected and can be used on any new device to retrieve your 2fa authenticator.

If you don't have the recovery code for the exchange (I assume you are trying to login to an exchange) all you can do is contact the customer service department of the site and request that they reset your code. Be prepared to go through KYC and waiting days and weeks for them to respond.
What I have noticed about exchanges is that if no kyc was done before by the user before the lost of the account, the account will be lost forever. But, if the person has verified his account before the account loss, then the customer care can request for certain credentials to help prove the user is the right owner of the account, which will be used to recover the account to the rightful owner.

6965  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Check address balance from seed phrase on: April 03, 2021, 08:28:23 AM
That is the function of wallet, if bitcoin was sent to any of the address the wallet controls, it will not display zero balance, if you follow what nc50lc comment. Or, so far it is BIP39 wallet, you can import it on wallets like mycelium to check it out.
MyCelium has BIP44(?) derivation path so unless you're using a wallet with the same derivation path, you can't find it.
Never mind me that I deleted my post, nc50lc has answered it already is the reason, to avoid repetition.

No, mycelium support BIP44, BIP49 and BIP84 derivation paths.
6966  Economy / Scam Accusations / Blockchain Recovery Department (clone of FCA authorised firm) on: April 02, 2021, 07:39:19 PM
United Kingdom's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) says Blockchain Recovery Department is a clone (scam/fake) department, that the firm is not registered or authorized by FCA. The fake department is claiming to work for Gain Capital UK Limited, but it is not true. Even, the legit firm is not providing any service related to recovery service.

Quote
The fake department
Blockchain Recovery Department (clone of FCA authorised firm)
Address: Cambridge Court 210, Shepherds Bush Rd, Hammersmith, London
Telephone: 555-183-726

Be aware that scammers may give out other false details or mix these with some correct details of the registered firm. They may change contact details over time to new email addresses, telephone numbers or physical addresses.

Gain Capital UK Limited is not providing anything related to crypto recovery service, blockchain recovery department is not working for Gain Capital UK Limited, it is not true but fake, and a way to let people that need to recover bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency to pay certain amount in order to help in recovering the funds back, but definitely fake and a way to scam.

6967  Economy / Reputation / Re: shahzadafzal account now belongs to a scammer on: April 02, 2021, 02:59:45 PM
what happens if someone posts their private key there.
That's like the first rule of Bitcoin. You break it, you lose it.
If someone is too childish to post their private key which has balance or has plan to use the address in the future then they do not deserve bitcoin. Let them be lol
Some people do not just know much about what private key his, only when their Bitcoin has been lost will they remember they have been fooled, although that is being a fool truly. Some ways wallet generate seed phrase and private may not include such warning like 'revealing the seed phrase or private key to anyone can be used to steal the whole Bitcoin the seed or private key control from the owner', this kind of information might make the foolish newbies to avoid such scam. But, you are not wrong, anyone that reveal his/her seed phrase are not worthy to have Bitcoin.
6968  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to cancel Bitcoin transaction? on: April 02, 2021, 12:27:01 PM
How about if you run Pruned Bitcoin node?

They perform almost exactly like a full node, you don't need to have complete copy of the blockchain stored on your hard drive and I believe you can also verify Bitcoin transactions.
You are right, a pruned node can relay blocks and transactions to other nodes, In this regard, a prune node can also still verify blocks and transactions. It is just an exeption, but pruned node is not entirely different from full node, as it is the continuation of a full blockchain (which means prunned node begins from previous full blockchain, and continue as a prunned node) which makes it just act like a full node in blocks and transactions validation.
6969  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Recovering losses on: April 02, 2021, 11:41:16 AM
Also I was thinking of selling a piece of  land I own, buy some bitcoin and keep it safe in hardware wallet, not trade with it.
Why would you sell a piece of land because you want to buy bitcoin? I think this is not a great idea at all because a piece of land is also an appreciative asset. And you should know that you do not want to take it slow is the reason you are thinking like this, while you need to take it slow in order to profit, or losses can ensue.

And slowly recover from my existing 20%. Or stop trading completely.  This 20% is also quite some. so just stop trading and be content with whatever I have. and DCA in future.
According to one of the rules of trading, do not count what you lose as losses (rather, as a means of learning in order to avoid past trading mistakes). If you lose, stop trading at the time to recover back good trading strategies. Just only focus on how not to lose, what has been lost is gone and never think about it, neither also not thinking you gained back what you lost but how not to lose anymore.

Thank you 4Y078.  I will do it. I later watched some videos on youtube and I am learning.
I think, I should have learnt about 'preserving the capital' earlier. It was mentioned in one of the videos. I have written down some rules in a notebook and remind myself every now and then.
You need to know the trading rules, trading is so risky, you can lost a lot, leading to selling of properties, trade again and lose. The best is to first try to use the Bitcoin that can convenient you to use and have a good risk management.

I have to reiterate this, never sell your land, be patient, hustle for money and buy Bitcoin. If you think trading is not making any sense, then believe in Bitcoin and just hold.
6970  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / Re: Nigeria Local Board {Official language, Pidgin} on: April 02, 2021, 09:29:08 AM
Hope people gather BNB and Una dey chop all these small small airdrops wey dey happen for discord?
Binance coin dey increase big time recently, but me dey think sey selling go good for now, but no mind my opinion, I am not good in trading that much.

Can you tell me more about the discord airdrop? I no too sabi airdrop things

Sometimes to spend unnecessarily on gas too expensive.
Ethereum and ERC20 tokens dey use gas, but nothing like that dey for bitcoin payment.

Btw, who among us Sabi accelerate bitcoin transactions?
To accelerate Bitcoin transaction, you can make use of free acceleratators but may not work at times, you can try https://www.viabtc.com/tools/txaccelerator, but try to make use of it at early time of an hour because it it can only contain 100 transactions per hour.  You can also make use of it as paid accelerators, https://www.viabtc.com/tools/txaccelerator also provide such service, but not advisable because of expensive fee that will be needed.

So, to know ways to unstuck transaction go make sense. In case of next time, if you dey make use of noncustododial wallet like electrum, you can enable the replace-by-fee. If you pay low fee, you go get the benefit to still be able to pump the fee higher, which will increase the chance of getting the transaction in a block by a miner. But, if na exchanges you dey use, the fee dey high already, and the transaction will be confirmed earlier.

Lastly, as to a question you asked earlier before asking this one above, bitcoin transaction can be 1 minute or even 30 minutes, but the normal algorithm used na to make bitcoin transaction take 10 minutes on average if high fee is used. So, if you pay high fee, expect the transaction confirmed around 10 minutes.
6971  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Seed phrases or backup files on: April 02, 2021, 08:47:32 AM
Hello I am new to this technology, so i find sth interesting about Backup files and Seed phrases, and i'm not sure how good i thought it,
Is it true that with only 12 seed phrases you can recover your private key and other data about wallet in a new device, it's cool, but how technically 12 word save a lot of information?
You can use the seed phrase for wallet keys and addresses recovery as BlackHatCoiner explained, that is how HD (hierarchical deterministic) wallets work. The seed phrase generate a seed. From the seed, a master private key is generated which will lead to generation of child keys. The child keys are numerous and each has its own bitcoin address. To understand more about this, you can use mastering bitcoin 'wallet', 'keys and addresses' for it.

https://github.com/bitcoinbook/bitcoinbook/blob/develop/ch04.asciidoc
https://github.com/bitcoinbook/bitcoinbook/blob/develop/ch05.asciidoc

if so, what is the difference between backup file and seed ? which one is proper ?
Backup file contains information to recover your wallet too, it will even be in a way your wallet name will be recovered along, but if you have password enabled, you will need to input the password during the recovery process. About seed phrase backup, offline backup is also best for safety, once the seed phrase is imported into the wallet on the new device too, it will recover back all the keys and addresses, and synchronized with the blockchain to get back your coins.

These twelve words represent a 128-bit entropy in which you derive every other address.
Yes, you are right, 12 words seed phrase has 128 entropy. But the longer the entropy with the addition of 32 bits, and also with the addition of 1 more checksum, the longer the words that will be generated

CS = ENT / 32
MS = (ENT + CS) / 11

|  ENT  | CS | ENT+CS |  MS  |
+---------+----+---------------+--------+
|   128   |  4 |      132     |  12  |
|   160   |  5 |      165     |  15  |
|   192   |  6 |      198     |  18  |
|   224   |  7 |      231     |  21  |
|   256   |  8 |      264     |  24  |

ENT= Entropy
CS= Checksum
MS= Mnemonic sentence in words

6976  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to cancel Bitcoin transaction? on: March 31, 2021, 07:54:13 PM
SPV nodes, which are the nodes which doesn't have the full blockchain, are described in the whitepaper:
Pool mining nodes as I have explained earlier also do not have the full blockchain. Which means, it is also not a full node.

The extended bitcoin network includes the network running the bitcoin P2P protocol, described earlier, as well as nodes running specialized protocols. Attached to the main bitcoin P2P network are a number of pool servers and protocol gateways that connect nodes running other protocols. These other protocol nodes are mostly pool mining nodes (see [mining]) and lightweight wallet clients, which do not carry a full copy of the blockchain.

But I don't understand a little about the Cancel (double-spend) feature, will this feature return the bitcoin that we sent (unconfirmed) to the same address or to another address? Honestly, I haven't tried the Cancle (double-spend) feature so far. I need a little explanation on this. However, I do know that this feature can cancel the first transaction for a low fee.
In this case, like on electrum wallet, you can cancel the transaction if replace-by-fee is enabled, it is double spend because the original transaction which is unconfirmed will be diverted into another address entirely, the address will be the address on your wallet. But, I have heard cases that it is possible to also divert the unconfirmed transaction to another address on another wallet. This is why it is good to make sure bitcoin transaction is confirmed before accepting it as a valid transaction.
6977  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / Re: Nigeria Local Board {Official language, Pidgin} on: March 31, 2021, 02:08:03 PM
Baba talk wetin dey your mind make we follow chuck mouth. I no know why here come dey dry like this just when we be don even dey close to get our board..we no fit just dey consistent for once
Waiting I think be say Brainboss get more power to get Naija attention for here, he go make good sense if merit giveaway dey for people wey dey bring quality topics and posts for this local thread. Although having like two merit source for better, but having one can still go a long way which fit make us progress having more merit source later.

Also, another thing wey I think be sey, many people among us no know the Kind topic wey they wan bring come, we should reiterate how the topic should look like until we all dey acquainted to it for here. Some people no even know sey this thread can contain topic. I remember when I search for something online, it took me to one of the topics I don create here on this local thread before. We should see this local thread as a board, it go help.

Also, I think Naija too dey relax, e go make sense if Brainboss concentrate merit on this local thread for Naija pass meriting there posts on other boards. Like as I see ham before, Brainboss they give merit like 99:1, or even the whole 100% to other threads. I mean for the forum, na 99% merits for Naija, and local thread na 1%. Na another reason people no dey concentrate for here.

For other local board, they get active users because they know say merit dey sure for local board, but not to be abused as only quality posts go worth ham. I think if Brainboss reduce the merit to 70:30 go make sense. Although, na Brainboss go comment about this one o, how it will go, na him go talk am how he go be. Mine na just way I think our local board can be achieved.
6978  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Is hotbit to binance possible? on: March 31, 2021, 10:46:18 AM
It is better to withdraw to your wallet address and then send it to binance. It is true that you will pay more money, but you will reduce the amount of loss if anything happens.
Withdrawing to wallet is not necessary, the reason why it is said people should withdraw to wallet is because ethereum support more than ERC20 now, it also support BEP2 and BSC (BEP-20)

The best is for user's to know the difference, but according to Hotbit, ERC-20 which is the first and most common one is supported by Hotbit. Then, OP can just click on ERC20 on Binance and copy the address and use it for the withdrawal on Hotbit. It will work as perfect.

Na true talk be that, but I still dey think we members wey get established account already, also wey dey active here can come up with something. Make we make suggestion as we think ham, me get some suggestions wey dey my mind, but e go make sense if Brainboss dey active for here so he no go miss any information about this suggestions. And people can oppose the suggestions or support, but waiting needed is to make the support or oppose constructive.
6980  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to cancel Bitcoin transaction? on: March 31, 2021, 09:20:55 AM
Any transaction can be included in a CPFP transaction. It is not like RBF where the transaction must be marked as opted-in before it being made. Any unconfirmed output can be included as an input in a new transaction with or without additional inputs and used to make a CPFP transaction. As you say, it might be that the person who made the first transaction cannot make a CPFP since all the outputs from the first transaction are to other people and there is no change output, but that does not mean the transaction itself does not support CPFP.
I get the point now, thanks. Although, there are some situations the sender can not be able to use CPFP due to not having change address in previous transaction, but this should not be considered that not all situation is a transaction not supporting CPFP because CPFP can still be used by the receiver so far he can spend unconfirmed transaction. You are absolutely correct.
