Did you see how excited Zabel was to announce his office owned $30 million in BTC? He lit up. Seemed giddy to be a part of it all.

Maybe we can get McDonald's and Toys "R" Us on board once the price gets back to $1200?

704  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Time to go on a spending spree at Overstock! on: January 09, 2014, 08:59:35 PM
Bought some couch pillows and "stuff holder" for the shower. Amazing how costly "stuff holders" are. I suppose the lesson there is I need to get rid of some stuff.

Slight issue on checkout was mostly my end -- yesterday I had trouble getting Coinbase to load in browser and refreshed it several times at which Coinbase banned me from logging in for 24 hours. So on checkout from Overstock they wanted me to login to Coinbase to pay, but of course I had been banned, so I had to do a secondary option where I just scan the QR and paid from my iphone (which had previously been logged into Coinbase anyway). So, no biggie, it worked.

I was also concerned because I have had a failed Coinbase purchase at Gyft, 1.5BTC which now makes me wary about using Coinbase to pay, however the success notice at Overstock came absolutely immediately, no "up to 15 minute" wait like there is when someone has the BitPay intermediary screen (waiting for payment to hit the network). I imagine this is because Overstock is integrated with Coinbase.

I had purchased quite a number of things at Xmas via BTC and I only had to wait about 4-10 seconds for each to process through BitPay. This overstock purchase was immediate via Coinbase.

Seems that Overstock is already accepting Bitcoin. Wasn't this supposed to happen somewhere around the second quarter?

I just paid Overstock.com in bitcoin using @Coinbase! http://www.overstock.com/bitcoin

Thank goodness Coinbase has been down for 45 minutes. I very nearly paid them a percentage to use their service but they wisely kept me from doing so.

Why would you shop with your coins if you think they`ll be worth 10x (or whatever figure) next year? Is everyone here insane or what?

Personally there a number of factors:
- I understand that what is happening with bitcoin may continue or it may not. It could be $10,000 or $100,000 or never more than $1,250. I may as well hold some and spend some so I gain in either event.
- I was lucky to have bought years ago. I feel like I can spare a few.
- I could die tomorrow. Why not enjoy it while I have it? And not just me, but my family as well?
- Even though I am self-employed I still live "check to check," it's just that my checks are sporadic. I am not wealthy. I'm always scraping by to get that mortgage payment. I have no savings aside from bitcoin. I don't feel like I could spare cash for the holidays but I do feel like I could spare a few coins.
- On top of those reasons there is always the old "why would you buy a computer when tomorrow it'll be faster and cheaper?" At some point, if one wants a computer, one just needs to dive in without over-analyzing it.
709  Economy / Speculation / Re: BitPay black friday numbers suck? on: November 30, 2013, 12:44:38 AM
I made 30-40 BitPay transactions via Gyft.com today. I spent a few BTC loading up on gift cards and then spent some of those on Amazon. I spent more dough for this holiday season than any other in my life, all in Bitcoin, all today. Thanks to Coinbase + Gyft/BitPay + Amazon.

Maybe we should let rich folks know where to park their dough?

One government screw-up and we're set to explode.

Not exactly government but how will this affect Bitcoin?

I will reserve judgment until I see an official statement form a related department or many reporters report of a hearing in a US courtroom.

713  Other / Meta / Re: should chart-buddy be allowed to post in wall-observer thread? on: September 30, 2013, 08:54:49 PM
Each user should have his/her own thread in which there is hourly automated posting of whatever nonsense they feel is pertinent. Preferably each automated post would be overly large images or vast walls of text.

Do they have reason to develop further? There is so little volume, why waste money expanding or improving the platform until the demand is there? I don't think this bodes well for other US-based exchanges on the horizon. There is simply no demand for them. I won't be surprised if many months after launching they still struggle to maintain even a small fraction of whatever volume is on gox.

For my part, I had previously put in a few good words about CampBX however I've pretty much stopped using them since it has become nearly impossible to trade on there during price swings. There was a time when one could trade on CampBX when Gox was down from trade lag, however in recent months I've seen several instances of Cloudflare on CampBX and just plain no response even during times when demand WASN'T spiking in general. It's simply become next to unusable for me. The last couple times I used it I basically had to wait until like 3AM EST when no one was using it, just to get money in and buy so I could transfer the BTC elsewhere.

Virwox also does a neat trick where when you purchase using paypal they use a different name each time.

This is what Full Tilt Poker was doing with credit cards before they were seized by U.S. Gov.

Oh well, then it's okay of course. I mean, isn't that the textbook definition of tolerance -- "not getting worked up about all kind of shit, except of course the stuff you really disagree with."

Even before our current "age of information" it has been a known quantity that astrology and all of these psychic games of foreknowledge, including all religion, are just wholesale invention grown on top of ignorance. It does become tough to tolerate when one sees a person over the age of 12 being tricked into believing, spending money on, and putting resources into such fraud.

When passing a 3-card monte table on the street in New York a few people will gather and watch as the scam unfolds. A couple will participate. Eventually someone calls the cops. This person who calls the cops doesn't do it because they can't "tolerate a card game." They understand it is a con and doing something to help prevent idiots from losing money, and maybe to help stop a little bit of danger in the world.

When you're 8, Bigfoot is intriguing, Loch Ness Monster is a possibility and maybe you wonder if you might find an actual Genie in a bottle. Once you grow up, if you still believe in reading chicken entrails, or that a magical undead sky wizard created you, other folks may not be as tolerant of it for the same reasons as the street monte game. Ignorance and zealotry for "mysterious forces" are detrimental to the progression of mankind.

It's one thing to sit in here and tolerate speculation on the mysterious forces affecting the price of bitcoin -- we signed up for that when we entered the Speculation area, more specifically this Wall Tracker thread. It's another to have to tolerate ignorant religious propaganda and/or endless fraudulent psychic promotion. Please start your own "I Don't Understand Everything About The Universe Yet Therefore Gawd Musta Dun It Tracker" thread or "Mysterious Psychic Stuff That 'Man May Never Fully Understand,' So It Must Be Magically Real" thread.
718  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why is Bitcoin so popular in Oregon? on: July 10, 2013, 09:02:21 PM
I see zero correlation between ball size and whether I want to pump my own gas or not.

Hang on, I think I have a chart around here for that.
719  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why is Bitcoin so popular in Oregon? on: July 10, 2013, 07:13:54 PM
Since the rest of you don't seem to be saving much money for exercising your God-given right to pump your own gas, I would say that it is a fair guess that your money is going straight into the pockets of your politicians, corporate executive's bonuses, and lobbying firms.

There are pros and cons to living in any state or country. The issue I find humourous is not among your distractions: how much land you own, how much tax you pay, what you pay for gas in CA, or where my state spends the money I pay for gas (that I may choose to pump myself, BTW).

The issue is folks claiming to be rebels, anarchists and devout freedom lovers who then get warm fuzzies over not being allowed to choose the simple act of pumping one's own gas, a freedom they used to have which was lost @1950 or so. I'm not much of a rebel, anarchist or freedom fighter but this irony is too much to let it go unnoticed.

Oregon may be a fine state. More power to you rebellious lot. At least your motorcyclists have some balls:
http://oregonmotorcyclist.com/misc_page.php?page=pumpgas
http://mentalfloss.com/article/18812/why-cant-you-pump-your-own-gas-oregon-and-new-jersey

Meanwhile a timid Californian grandmother apparently has more balls than an Oregonian steel worker. I have heard tales of teams of fearless Hollywood grannies mustering the courage to pull into any local gas station, get out of their old Cadillac Sevilles and pump their own gas. In public, no less!
720  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in MMOs (or other video games) on: July 10, 2013, 06:38:58 PM
I had a feeling you were going to need to have this explained to you...

Quote
IMO bitcoin is ... too expensive...

"Too expensive" simply doesn't apply. One USD worth of BTC bought $1 worth of stuff when you bought it. If you didn't spend it immediately then it was your loss/gain for holding the BTC.

If the price goes up 10X then you only need to buy one tenth of a BTC to get the same amount of stuff. If it goes down 10X then you need 10 times the number.

"Too expensive" is your personal psychological barrier for the need to buy/hold/trade a full "bitcoin". While many others may share this barrier, it is only a psychological issue and not reality.

The various exchanges charge maybe 1% per transaction; compared to a bank, how much are checking fees including the cost to buy checks? How much are wire transfer fees? The BTC client requests @7 cents USD for a transaction, not even a requirement.

Quote
IMO bitcoin is ... too slow....

Slow is waiting for a wire transfer from a bank. Try weeks, not minutes. Slow is waiting 3-7 days for a check to clear your bank. You're crying because you had to wait 40 minutes? I can't imagine you're an adult as most would be too embarrassed to admit such a thing.

Try Coinbase, your funds will be available with 0-1 confirmations, but then you'll complain about the cost. Time is money. So make a decision as to what is important to you and quit bitching like a 7 year old girl. I can tell your parents were one of the kind that let you have gum while waiting in the supermarket checkout line because you cried until they gave in.

Shop at places who use BitPay, who will immediately transfer the BTC into other currency. No waiting for confirmations as BitPay takes that risk for you. As more and more exchanges and businesses come on board they will require less and less confirmations as a benefit to put them ahead of their competition. Soon enough most businesses, especially for smaller purchases, will not require any confirmation but will process the sale as soon as payment hits the network, meaning nearly immediately.

IMO bitcoin ...micro transactions are less and less welcomed.

While there may be "talk" of taxing micro transactions, in reality transaction fees were lowered in the last release (a benefit to micro transactions) and may be lowered again in the future.

Micro payment channels are being implemented:
