7021  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinbase hodling the coins forever on: August 24, 2021, 02:09:50 PM
I would never hold my coins on Coinbase or any other centralized exchanges, even if they claim to be super secure.
Here is one case example that was reported today on CNBC tv, hackers doing sim swaps and wiping out Coinbase customer accounts.
Funny thing is that this Vidovic family from Florida is known for other complains before (wife is a firefighter, husband is working as a nurse...).
Women was fired from Tampa Fire Rescue few years ago, then she sued them and won the case with $251,000, so I am suspecting she is going to sue Coinbase next.

7022  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Best Hard Drive for Bitcoin Node? on: August 24, 2021, 12:36:29 PM
The lifespan is an interesting question. With a lot of writes there is a finite lifespan to an SSD.
BUT in something for just holding node & wallet data. It's probably going to last a lot longer then a spinning drive. For the most part blockchain data once written is not written again and the little bit of data that other files rewrite is tiny.
There are no moving mechanical parts in SSD drives, you can track condition of drive with good accuracy, and if you enable enough reserved free space for over provisioning, you would significantly increase lifespan of your drive.
SSD's are quiet, not producing any noise, and they are usually heating less than old HDD drives, this can also increase their life.

SSDs don't typically hold the data for as long HDDs do.
It probably depends on type of memory and controller used in SSD drives, but I heard that big data centers are using some combination of SSD and HDD drives.
HDD are using for files not moving a lot and moving files are usually stored on SSD drives.

High-end consumers who might be tempted by enterprise-level NAND drives need to pay attention to the brief unpowered data retention times — in this case, buying an enterprise drive really might not be the best choice for a system that remains unpowered for any length of time.
So this issue is mostly related with higher temperatures, meaning you need to have proper cooling system and ventilation in your computer.
I liked conclusion in that extremetech article - no single storage type is perfect, and always back up important data Wink

7023  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: What the heck is Blockstream doing now? on: August 24, 2021, 11:36:05 AM
Sorry Man, i can't see where is the problem if Blockstream follows a successful model like blockchain.com or coinbase, as there isn't a single accusation against it.
Why comparing Blockstream with exchanges like Coinbase or Blockchain.com when there is nothing related with what I said before?
I am not saying they are doing everything in a wrong way, maybe that satellite example is actually good, but I am not sure it is used in real life or maybe it's used more for their sidechain.

The reality is that there are a lot of idiots out there that are willing to give their money in exchange for garbage only if it has a fancy name such as ICO or nowadays DeFi or in this case NFT. Obviously anybody who can, will produce the garbage these idiots want to buy and happily take their money, or better yet create the platform where scammers build garbage to scam others.
I really don't understand this NFT hype that is probably much worse than ICO scams, someone literally sold JPEG image of rock for $600k.
If that is not a scam than I don't know what is.

I don't think anyone hates them for creating such products. It's the fact that they like to trash ICOs and altcoins and etc but then they end up making really similar products, the difference being that it's on their Liquid sidechain. It's just hypocrisy.
It is 100% hypocrisy, and I am expecting to see rock images to be sold on Liquid soon, just because they can...

7024  Economy / Goods / Re: FOR SALE: Original Satoshi Times 03/01/2009 on: August 24, 2021, 11:13:21 AM
You can make an offer if you think the price is too high
OK, but you didn't reply to my previous question, if you already sold this newspaper how can you make this NFT version redeemable?
7025  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum on Android on: August 24, 2021, 11:03:50 AM
I just downloaded the android version of electrum to try it out. It is extremely slow and would usually get stuck when clicking "next" or "cancel" is it really this bad or is it just my phone? I am currently Using Poco x3 NFC with 6gb ram 64gb storage.
It could be the case of slower internet connection or you need to clean up your phone system, and I don't think that phone specs are causing this issue.

Maybe you should try other open source wallets like BlueWallet (that is probably better than Electrum) or Mycellium (has ads I don't like), and see if there is any difference in performance.
7026  Local / Hrvatski (Croatian) / Re: [VELIKA LISTA] Hardverski novčanici (80+) on: August 24, 2021, 08:16:53 AM
Wink

7027  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: August 24, 2021, 08:00:25 AM
Which falls under their one purpose of securely storing and allowing you to safely interact with private keys, passwords, or codes. Not for playing games.
That is not exactly one purpose mixing private keys with password manager and logging on websites, and airgapped computers are by your definition even less secure because they all have games and other ''bloatware'' installed, and smartphone is even less secure so you should never use it again.
Anyone can find much more bugs in airgapped linux OS full of all kinds of software, yet people use it all the time with Electrum wallet, and they can play a game if the want.
Hardware wallets are just mini computers not some miracle devices with one strict use case.
7028  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: August 24, 2021, 07:25:57 AM
The whole point of a hardware wallet is to do one thing and one thing only.
No they are not meant to be used only for one thing, same like airgapped computers are not meant only for one thing.
You can use many hardware wallets as password managers or similar like yubikey device for signing on websites in more secure way.

Is this actually possible... who knows? The point is, that adding "fun" hidden easter eggs like this, is not necessary... the dev effort would be much better spent ensuring that the "necessary" code is secure.
They are using well tested mostly Coldcard open source code that is audited, and I think they have bounty reward program for hacking them and finding bugs, so everyone is welcomed to do it. Go for it Smiley
7029  Economy / Goods / Re: FOR SALE: Original Satoshi Times 03/01/2009 on: August 23, 2021, 02:19:38 PM
Yes, I have sold. Now I am experimenting with this NFT route, where I custody a copy and deliver on redemption.
So you said that you sold the actual Times newspaper, but you are still selling NFT version that is redeamable for actual hard paper copy.
That means you had multiple copies of same newspaper or what?

Way overpriced btw, and much more expensive than original newspaper price of 10 BTC.
7030  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Accepting bitcoin as payment for my business on: August 23, 2021, 01:07:01 PM
The challenge though is the issue of transaction fees, 8 out of 10 customers aren't exposed and only use the blockchain wallet. I try to educate them on other wallets with low transaction fees like electrum.
Electrum is not having any special low fees, but it's better than any online wallet because you can set fees manually, if you know what you are doing.
I would suggest that your customers use bc1 bech32 addresses to lower transaction fees, and maybe give special discount if they purchase more goods on weekend when fees are usually cheaper.
Even now anyone can send BTC with low fee of only 1 sat/vB or $0.07, but you can always add alternative option off accepting Lightning Network payments.
7031  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: South African Man Loses $900,000 Worth Of BTC After Accidentally Deleting Keys on: August 23, 2021, 12:55:11 PM
This could be one of the cases of coins being ''lost'' in boating accident to avoid paying tax extortion, but his story could also be true as we know that millions of bitcoin are lost forever.

There is one more funny case of Swedish Government returning approximately $1.3 Million in BTC to drug dealer, after seized his crypto grew in value since his initial arrest.
Swedish Government auctioning 36 Bitcoin seized by this guy, but they had to return him 33 Bitcoin's, because only 3 BTC was enough to match the fiat value.
I am not sure this would happen the same way in United States or any other countries, but court seems to be doing their job fine in Sweden, until they change regulations.
7032  Economy / Service Discussion / What the heck is Blockstream doing now? on: August 23, 2021, 11:54:51 AM
Blockstream is looking more and more like ethereum every day, and maybe even worse because they keep trashtalking eth while doing exactly the same thing.
First they created centralized sidechain called Liquid and they created tokens, like L-BTC and USDT Tether, than they also created some fake dex exchange called Tdex (True Decentralized Exchange), and now they created guess what... NFT's and LNFT platform Roll Eyes.
They are now selling digital collectibles and selling tickets with access to the film sci-fi movie Silhouettes, but it looks to me they are just copy-pasting everything ethereum is doing.
I guess they are thinking only profit and pumps, or maybe Adam Back is thinking of changing movie industry with NFT's... yeah right.
https://blog.liquid.net/sci-fi-film-silhouettes-integrates-liquid-nfts/

PS
I will use this topic for all future ''great'' new inventions by Blockstrem, and it's open for discussion.

7033  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: August 23, 2021, 11:17:30 AM
Most of those features are part of Ledger Live, not part of the hardware wallet.
It's directly connected with firmware of ledger device, there are even some shitcoins not even supported by ledger live app and you can use them with ledger.
Do you use your smartphone that can store bunch of games, applications, maybe crypto wallets, google or iPhone tracking with other stuff, and do you also consider it unprofessional?

supporting altcoin is quite different from adding video game.
Yes, it's much more risky and dangerous supporting bunch of shitcoins than adding some game.
Please tell me one scenario were someone will use this game to steal your coins or keys, when we know that Passport (like Coldcard) have no cables and it's never connected with your computer or internet in any way.
7034  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: I developed a free job listing website for crypto related jobs on: August 23, 2021, 11:02:15 AM
IDK where you find info about charging, perhaps the owner deleted it after your suggestion.
You can find this information on their website page bottom:

https://cryptojobslist.com/hire-blockchain-talent

Clicking on button Post Jobs that is located on top you will be redirected to new page for creating jobs, that is showing this value by default but you can move slider left or right, from $69 to $2569 or entering value manually and changing your budget:

Who will pay one single cent to post a job offer on a fresh new started service, with zero reach?
My reply was not related with this new website Jobcoiner from @Arnadus, but I replied to @ksaitor that is owner of other website Cryptojobslist started back in 2017.

7035  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: August 23, 2021, 08:49:34 AM
I don't see how hidden games enable one to manage their crypto holdings securely Roll Eyes
Nobody said that games make crypto holdings more secure, but adding support for bunch of altcoins in hardware wallet is much worse, especially if you are not using them, because they need to be constantly updated.
All hardware wallets that are not proving Bitcoin only firmware are way less secure than having Passport wallet with games, and as far as I know only ColdCard, Trezor, Keystone and Bitbox02 have BTC only firmware available.
I remember example of hackers being able to steal your Bitcoin from ledger wallet because of flaw with some of their forked altcoin app isolation bypass:
https://monokh.com/posts/ledger-app-isolation-bypass
7036  Other / Archival / Re: Binance introduces KYC for all users on: August 23, 2021, 08:39:04 AM
What happened to the 0.06 BTC limit exactly, is it canceled since KYC will become mandatory on October? They were supposed to apply it to my account on the 17th of the month but I can still withdraw up to 2 BTC per day.
Sneaky behavior from Binance and it looks like they performed some acting performance or stunt for general public and twitter.
Most of the people I know still have same old withdrawal limits and they are clearly not following their own rules that are changing all the time.
I still didn't receive any mail about this changes, and we are way passed UTC time 2021-08-23 00:00 AM and once again they showed that people shouldn't trust them.
7037  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: August 22, 2021, 12:46:59 PM
If the device looked like a Nintendo Switch or a modern phone, then that idea might have some merit. But the device looks nothing like either of them, and says "Foundation" across the back, so any attacker can discover what it really is with 5 seconds and a Google search.
I am still using old style phone and it's working perfectly fine, looks similar with Passport wallet.

Don't know why you are bringing Ledger in to this, but none of that is in any Ledger firmware. Don't want to use any altcoins? Then don't install those apps. Don't want to use their exchanges service? Then don't use Ledger Live. None of that presents an attack surface to their hardware wallets.
Do you know what exactly is hidden in ledger firmware? Could be backdoor or hidden spyware.
You don't know because it is closed source, and I mentioned it as a prime example of unprofessionalism in hardware wallets (1 million leaked customer data).
7038  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Best Hard Drive for Bitcoin Node? on: August 22, 2021, 12:23:40 PM
Only for Windows and, as noted, is actually AMD only...
I have supporting chipset and someone told me there is a way for making this work even on Linux OS.
Here is video review by Level1Techs explaining this better than me:
https://youtu.be/wbl2dYgjMQ4

Meanwhile, Intel have something similar with their "Optane" system, but that involves buying an extra bit of hardware. It too is Windows only.
You can combine and use StoreMI together with Intel Optane for full performance, as if that software was made for supporting Optane, maybe AMD did it to piss off Intel Smiley

... until it failed ... then decided that wiping such a HDD of all it's data could also be problematic ...
Failed how, and what exactly failed? Seagate HDD or unified drive made by StoreMI?

Yeah... I haven't really seen any full hardware "hybrid" drives for a while... The were a thing when SSD's were a lot more expensive, but as SSDs slowly came down in price, it seemed hybrid drives just kinda disappeared before they really became a thing.
Hybrid drives are junk, that is why nobody buy them anymore and they are not advertised.
StoreMI is creating unified layered drive with tiered storage that is much better solution and different tech compared to hybrid drives.
7039  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: August 22, 2021, 11:56:42 AM
Idea was probably to hide the fact that you are using hardware wallet, and I actually like the idea of hiding hardware wallet with fake game console or phone device, but maybe they should add two alternative version of firmware, one clean and other with games included.

What other stupid "hidden features" have they included?
I know one more hardware wallet called ledger that are adding bunch of shit features with fake dex swap exchanges, supporting bunch of altcoins, they had multiple leaks, they proven their unprofessionalism to everyone, and people still buy that junk.

It also screams of unprofessionalism to me. You want people to store thousands or even millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency on your device, but then you say "Lol, we made it play Snake and Tetris!
I think you know very well that coins are not actually stored on that device, only keys are.
