Filipino couple amasses at least P900M in alleged Bitcoin scam

MANILA, Philippines – Police have nabbed a couple promising easy wealth through popular cryptocurrency Bitcoin, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa announced on Tuesday, April 10.

Arnel and Leonady Ordonio were nabbed by PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) operatives, the police division in charge of high-stakes and high-profile crimes.

According to Dela Rosa, the couple has scammed more than 50 unknowing investors, amassing wealth worth P900 million* in "raw capital." This means the amount of money promised to be returned is not yet included in the computation. – Rappler.com

if there are people who scam with bitcoin, The 1st impression of investors here in the philppines will look at bitcoin as scam. -_-

I thought that cryptocurrency trading and investing is banned in the Philippines.
Well,I guess thats why we need all ICOs and crypto trading platfoms to comply with more regulations and
reveal more information about their owners and devs. This case is just a random HYIP/ponzi scheme. They could easily scam people, promising insane profits from any other altcoin, but I guess that there`s still some hype around bitcoin.People believe that they could make huge profits overhight from btc,in reality,it`s not that easy anymore.
7102  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-04-09] Twitter Cancels @Bitcoin Account as its CEO Invests in Lightning Ne on: April 09, 2018, 12:21:01 PM
Twitter should donate that handle to either the operators of the bitcoin.org website, or the actual developers contributing to Core.

I just fucking hate it that Roger Ver and his BCrash shills think he has the right of claiming his scummy project has any right to even remotely be put in the same category as Bitcoin. Roger Ver and Jihan Wu are one of the largest Bitcoin holders in this ecosystem, and if we just calculate that they each have at least 200,000BTC, then simple math tells me that they now hold at least 20,000BTC worth of BCrash each (not even calculating how many more they gained by manipulating the market). It's nothing more than a blatant cash grab. At current levels that's a $140 million bonus at minimum.

I wish that Twitter could give the @Bitcoin handle to the bitcointalk forum admins,so they could tweet interesting content from this forum. Grin
Anyway,if Ver really holds 20,000 BTC,I doubt that he actually is a 100% BCH supporter. Why don`t he just sell all his BTC holdings and pump the value of his BCH altcoin.I guess that his propaganda and his investing decisions don`t match.
7103  Economy / Economics / Re: Venezuela's growing interest in bitcoin explained on: April 09, 2018, 06:19:54 AM
I digital currency can`t solve Venezuela`s problems.Digital currencies are mainly used by woung men with access to a computer and a stable monthly income+enough savings to invest. What is the solution?
The nation of Venezuela has to get rid of this government and elect and new one, which will accept the US dollar as the national currency.I know it might sound heretic for the crypto supporters here.I`m not a fiat or US dollar supporter, but the people of Venezuela need a stable fiat surrency.
The Petro cryptocurrency project is a totall mess. Sad
7104  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Does the Media Keep Referring to Ver as "Bitcoin Jesus"? on: April 09, 2018, 06:10:39 AM
What?Satoshi Nakamoto is the one and only Bitcoin Jesus. Some ignorant journalists, who don`t know anything about bitcoin`s history(and can`t make the difference between bitcoin core and bitcoin cash) just wrote down some low quality ignorant posts about Ver.
Perhaps Roger Ver had paid them to proclaim him as the "Bitcoin Jesus".
Anyway, the average newbies just don`t know the difference between BTC and BCH.Perhaps a lot of them will be fooled to believe that BCH is the real bitcoin.
7105  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-04-07] Retailer Adoption of Bitcoin is Growing in the US and Canada on: April 08, 2018, 11:37:15 AM
It`s normal for the bitcoin adoption amongst retailers to grow. The btc transaction fees and confirmation time had decreased a lot, making the btc transactions faster and cheaper than before.Companies like Newegg and Overstock are big players in the online retail business, but they are not giants like Amazon or eBay.
Anyway, such good news have to be shared with the entire crypto commnuity,in order to fight with all the FUD news, that spread frustration amongst the crypto traders.
7106  Economy / Economics / Re: How do drug dealers get their bitcoin laundered? on: April 08, 2018, 06:05:24 AM
Your are asking one question in your thread title and another question in your topic. Huh
They get their bitcoin laundered by using bitcoin mixer services,i guess.
How do they get cash?By using localbitcoins and paxful,i guess.I don`t think that anyone could track the origin of that money. Grin
Drugs actually aren`t that expensive in Africa,Asia and Latin America. They become expensive when people sell them in Europe and North America. The more interesting question is,how do they ship the drugs from Morocco to Europe and what`s the shipping cost?
7107  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-04-07] George Soros Prepares to Trade Cryptocurrencies on: April 07, 2018, 11:53:41 AM
George Soros is a well known "bear" ,when it comes to trading financial assets. If the news are true and he really starts to trade cryptos, I think that we might witness a bearish market for the next 6 months,or even more. His theory about dictators ,who are going to adopt bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is a joke.
Most dictators aren`t smart enough to embrace bitcoin and the blockchain technologies. They want only gold and big weapons(for mass destruction) Grin.
7108  Economy / Economics / Re: Blockchain and Economists on: April 07, 2018, 06:45:49 AM

A currency as a cryptocurrency has many advantages and will — from my point of view — change economics fundamentally.

· Simple example: such a currency allows a government to help bypass restrictions like the lack of correspondent banks.

· More complex example: such a currency allows a government to directly work together with the population. For example, it is possible for the government to submit debit cards to farmers, so they can rebuild their farms after a disaster; without any banks involved (and within days).

These are just examples. Many other possibilities exist.

Government issued wallets on a government blockchain will be here rather sooner than later. Smart contracts will enable a much closer relationship between government and their population. In my above-mentioned example, a government does not even need to issue debit cards. They can select vendors that carry specific products/services and then tell the farmers what products/services they have been allocated to and where they can get them. The process can be fully automated and is transparent. The money transfer is done in the background.

Or what about credit loans for housing projects, or business startup loans to boost sectors of the economy. Operations that are traditionally embedded in banks / credit unions, but in future can be realized directly by governments?

All the advanteges that you are talking about can be conducted by a government-owned bank.
I don`t think that the government is obligated to help farmers to rebuild their farms after a disaster. That`s why insurance companies exist.
Credit loans realized by the government? This is a pretty old idea and it isn`t working.
The blockchain and smart contracts still can`t replace banking services, but I`m sure that they will,in the not so distant future.
7109  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Managing Telegram Bounties ??? on: April 06, 2018, 12:21:11 PM
There was an active Telegram campaign on the forum last month.I think it was called Assistive Reality(ARX).You can search for telegram campaigns in the "Services" forum board and review their threads. What do you mean by "telegram bounty"?Paying people to join a Telegram group?
There`s no need for you to get a Telegram bot.Sig campaign managers like Edwardard can run Telegram campaigns without any problem.
7110  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tom Lee Estimates BTC taxes are around 25 billion owed on: April 06, 2018, 12:10:07 PM
He also claims 1 billion in = 25 billion in added value to MC. So if we do the reverse and he is right on the 25 billion owed that should suck out close to 600+ billion in MC from all time highs. Which puts us at a low end of 175-250 Billion in total market cap. Kind of where we are now...

Who is Tom Lee and how can he prove his claim?I don`t believe that all the crypto traders around the world will pay all their taxes.I`ve never paid a single penny for my crypto profits and I don`t have any problems with the authorities in my country. The main reason behind the market cap fall is that a lot of investors left and there are no newbies coming in.That`s the result of 6 months endless FUD and more regulations.
I`m sure that many people ask themselves "is it legal to trade crypto in Japan and South Korea?".If yes, then when it will become illegal?
7111  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Tokens (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][ICO] GRAFT - Universal Payment Processing Network on: April 06, 2018, 06:49:15 AM
I tried to send GRFT from my Android wallet to Tradeogre but an "Internal server error" message appears.
Can you fix this?Anybody having the same issue? My Android GRAFT wallet app is updated.
I`m 100% sure that I`ve copypasted the exact same GRFT address given by Tradeogre, without any errors.
7112  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-04-05] 3 Reasons Why Bitcoin Price Will Rebound in Q2 2018 on: April 06, 2018, 05:52:41 AM
The US tax season theory is a joke.Asian investors have bigger influence over the bitcoin price.I don`t know how many americans pay taxes for their cryptocurrency profits, but I`m pretty sure that the number isn`t quite big.
I think that 90% of all crypto traders and investors don`t care at all about the Coincheck deal. The "confidence boost" is just a hypothesis.
History can`t be on bitcoin`s side, because we can`t analyze market prices based on their previous behaviour.
The number 1 reason why the BTC price is going down is because the whales are selling and not HODLing.
7113  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will you stay in crypto if BTC does not recover? on: April 05, 2018, 11:10:55 AM
I will stay in the crypto community even if the bitcoin price goes under 1000 USD.
I`m not sure that the term "recover" is the right word that describes the situation. The BTC price is where it is.Bitcoin (or the blockchain) isn`t damaged or destroyed,so it`s doesn`t have to "recover".
All the "easy profit" seeking traders and investors will lose their money and they will just leave the crypto community, which might be something good for all the real crypto supporters.
7114  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-04-05] 14 Percent Of Japan’s Young Male Workforce Invest In Cryptocurrency on: April 05, 2018, 11:02:15 AM
14 percent of the young male is a really small percentage, and i think that this number is going to decrease, after the Japanese authorities conduct more regualtions and shut down more cryptocurrency exchange platforms. The other sad truth is that cryptocurrencies remain a "terra incognita" for the all ladies around the world(including Japan). This is a major problem and we should think about a solution.
7115  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MailChimp's Ban on Cryptocurrency Marketing Is Causing Collateral Damage on: April 05, 2018, 06:30:16 AM
That's too bad, mailchimp is one of the industry leaders when it comes to an autoresponder, I hope Trafficwave will not ban cryptocurrency related stuff just like Mailchimp does, they will lose clients fast if they do that, there should be regulation on this bad and scam ICO's it's doing damage to us.

Mailchimp might be one of the email marketing industry leaders, but it`s far behind the real email marketing giants like Aweber and Getresponse.I`ve never heard any news about Aweber and Getresponse going to ban any cryptocurrency related email marketing campaigns.I understand that all those businesses want to keep their reputation, but they will lose a lot of paying customers with this ban.
All the crypto and ICO developers can`t use Adwords,FB ads and Twitter Ads for promotion anymore.I guess that bitcointalk will be the only place for them to advertise their projects.
7116  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto vs. Cash - How the Numbers Stack Up on Drugs, Guns, Murders on: March 24, 2018, 12:13:26 PM
Bill Gates was a technology visionary around 25 years ago. Now,he is just a rich man, inolved into charity projects. His opinion about bitcoin and all the other cryptocurrencies isn`t relevant.OP,you don`t have to gather so much statistical data,in order to prove that he is wrong. It would be great,if the blockchain could discover and track all the dirty transactions, involved in drug, weapons and illegal stuff trading.
Criminals don`t respect the blockchain,so we have to find a way to destroy their dirty online business.
7117  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: [2018-03-20] First Hand Chinese News - New Governor of People Bank's of China on: March 24, 2018, 12:01:12 PM
It is reported that the new governor is kind of friendly to the bitcoin.

He stated that he is inspired by bitcoin in running the financial system in 2013.

He was a professor at US Indiana University in 1986.

But my personal understanding is the government will not open the free market for the bitcoin. One possible approach is to open a centralized exchange to list the only selective tokens as a way to encourage innovation.

You may find the most updated information from China and beyond by https://t.me/oneminute_crypto_news.

It doesn`t matter who is the governor of the people bank`s of China. The PBOC can`t make independent decisions, they are controlled by the chinese commnuist government. He might be inspired by bitcoin, but that doesn`t mean anything.China will continue on it`s way to create a state-backed cryptocurrency.
OP,you are wrong about this.A centralized exchange can`t encourage innovations.Only the free market will lead to faster adoption of the blockchain and crypto technologies.
7118  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-03-23]Regulators to Close Binance in Japan. Binance Moving to EU on: March 24, 2018, 11:55:03 AM
From the word “rumors” seems to be suspicious when binance CEO itself are not giving out such details or affirm of such regulatory compliance from Japanese Government. It can be a case of bad news spreading again to lower the prices on crypto coin under Binance. This is a matter of fact my concern than any truthfulness of this issue.

If this is really true, the Binance CEO would try to hide or at least deny this information for a while,in order to avoid major cryptocurrency price crash and panic across the Binance traders. This is just rumors, but if it`s true,I don`t think that this is bad news at all.Small countries ,like Malta can be more crypto friendly and open to new innovations.
7119  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: iShook- Blockchain Based Literature Platform on: March 24, 2018, 06:29:59 AM
It would be awesome ,if you manage to create an Amazon Kindle alternative, which is blockchain based and accepts cryptocurrency payments.Anyway,i don`t want to click on the links that you`ve posted under your thread. Can you post here the github link of your whitepaper? To be honest,iShook is a very strange name for a reading and publishing platform. Why did you choose this name for the project?
7120  Economy / Speculation / Re: I am a time-traveler from the future, here to beg you to stop what you are doing on: March 24, 2018, 06:17:28 AM
Quote
Economic growth today is about -2% per year. Why is this? If you own more than 0.01 Bitcoin, chances are you don't do anything with your money. There is no inflation, and thus no incentive to invest your money. Just like the medieval ages had no significant economic growth, as wealth was measured in gold, our society has no economic growth either, as people know their 0.01 Bitcoin will be enough to last them a lifetime. The fact that there are still new Bitcoin released is what prevents our world from collapse so far it seems, but people fear that the decline in inflation that will occur during the next block halving may further wreck our economy.

This is ridiculous. This guy doesn`t know anything about how the economy works. The lack of inflation doesn`t mean that there`s no incentive to invest your money. We will use our bitcoins to buy food and clothes, pay the bills and fuel our cars with gas.The only thing that drives an economy to grow is the demand for goods and services. This guy thinks that all goods and services will disappear in the future.
The meadieval ages had no economic growth because of other reasons, not because of the gold ,being used as the main currency.
