I've always bought into the notion that higher-ranked members tend to earn more merits, because it seems almost self-evident to me.  Older members have a lot more invested in the forum, are likely more knowledgeable (except for goobers like me), and know what kinds of posts are worth it to make.  Newbies....who the hell knows?  They don't have a good history on bitcointalk, that's for sure.  But there are always a bunch that keep at it, keep climbing the ranks, and end up becoming established members of our fine forum.  They're just rare, that's all.
This is a forum, higher members that are active do come to post on this forum daily or almost daily to learn from each other. They make posts in a way they read unique posts that they get ideas from to later make better posts too. When I met two friends some years ago, I noticed if I am arguing with one about something, the other friend is almost all the time in support of the other friend. Before I met them, they have been together for years, they have discussed many things they have agreed upon many times before I met them both. That is how this forum is. But the difference is that newbies do not know what old ranked members know, but when he began to read more than post, studying the establish members, his discussion would start to be similar with those of old ranked members and he will rank up.

But I'm sure nothing beats ChartBuddy.
You can't tell me that guy doesn't use some bot to post those charts about bitcoin price every 1 hour in the wall observer thread, surely he will be number one, the reason why post quantity with no quality is useless.
ChartBuddy is a bot.

We need to give him some time off as he will soon pass me by.

I don’t feel like posting 30 days in a row and doing 30 posts a day which won’t make me strech the lead much at all. it would be 900 to 720 and far too much work.

There we go again  Cheesy

A bear has to do bear stuff  Grin

Such a terrible idea, all mining gears lose BTC value over time, if one is confident that price will recover at one point, buying BTC directly is the best thing to do,

I was half joking with that but only half, not that I would even plan on doing so but I remembered how used gear that was one step away from being sold at scrap metal prices suddenly become 5x more expensive than normal. Of course, I might get things wrong since at that time I wasn't mining and I wasn't following the pieces that close but didn't s9 spike from something like $75 to $500 and even over it?
But, as I said, I was half joking and 0 percent planning on doing it, but it was a fun thing thinking of!

I see Phil got lucky, the S19Pro are sold out,w what's left are the 95Th at $3230, meh!!!

PS
Also, just how much f^&^&^ spare power do you still have?  Grin

With eth pulling 17-20 million a day out of the mining market .

When I go over reddit posts it starts to hurt my head from how much copium and denial some GPU miners are clinging to, people with tons of cards claiming not to sell because the next bull run will be here any moment, there were thousands making a few $ a day watching a video card mining and they simply can't let it go.
Magically someone will invent a new coin just so that they can make money again!

well we put in the 260-280 kwatt solar array.

Saylor's buying, so you can be sure the price absolutely will not sustain itself above $20k. We'll be below $19k next week as the world continues to offload this particularly useless risk asset in the midst of a financial crisis that only fiat can save us from. Hop on the USD lifeboat before it's too late.

Right now its tough market for GPUs.

Basically if you are a seller, you are getting awfully low offers because "ETH mining is dead".

If you are a buyer, most of the ads or ebay listings have a price listed that is still fairly high for your tastes. So you make an offer that ends up being insultingly low and get the seller to not respond.

Similar to the car market it seems. Buyers don't want to pay inflated prices and sellers don't want to sell low, so there are no actual sales.

I sold 4 1080ti's for 880

pays for my power the next month

So I am mining the with 10000 - 140 = 9860 hash

So if we keep selling just a bit of gpus we can mine at little or no cost.

IF he buys all eight for say 6400 I pay 900 in power so that is 7 months of mining. cost is 8 x 110 = 880 hash. I can live with that.
7185  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Looking for 3080 & 3090 cards on: September 29, 2022, 02:52:15 PM
I'm looking for people who are looking to get rid of RTX3080 & 3090 cards now that mining is dead.
Please only PM if you have at least 8 units of the same model.

How cheap do you think you can pay.

I have 8 evga ftw3 cards.

3090

cheapest one on ebay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/234703925776?

800 usd

but seller sucks

https://www.ebay.com/itm/354301443545?

825

but seller is an unknown

https://www.ebay.com/itm/354301443545?

850 best offer

seller is pretty new

https://www.ebay.com/itm/115529992733?

860

a real seller.

so 860 x 8 = 6880 + tax so maybe 600 = 7480 if you buy 8 on ebay

I am in NJ,USA

I will check to see exactly how many of them I have and I will go lower than 7480. If you are USA based.

I may or may not have the boxes.

Bitcoin forum is just a discussion forum that doesn't pay anyone directly.it has legal/formal ranks that anyone should attain if they'd really wanna join a signature to make few bucks for themselves. We have a couple of good posters that are lacking merits to rank up and WITHOUT THE RANKS, YOU ARE NOTHING!
And everyone can attain those ranks with time. You need both merits and activity to get there. The spamming and shit posting got so bad a few years ago, that the admins had to do something. Hence, the merit system was introduced.

We have a couple of good posters that are lacking merits to rank up and WITHOUT THE RANKS, YOU ARE NOTHING!
If you believe that to be the case, please take advantage of the Report unmerited good posts to Merit Source thread. Someone with enough source merits can take a look at those posts and merit them if they feel they deserve some. The Pharmacist has also written more than once that people can PM him and ask him to check their post history and he will merit those posts that deserve more merits. There is also Ratimov's Help newbies and those who have a little left to the next rank initiative.

JAY, lemme make you understand that a couple of times, people have confessed that the merit system ain't PERFECT, alright?
Of course it's not perfect. Nothing is. But it's good. It has stopped shit posters to rank up just by posting meaningless posts and it has killed the black market for account sellers.

Why are we still having some silly-head legendary shit-posters merited, even after the airdrop disaster (I call it so for those that don't fit it)? Isn't this the adversely the same reason it was created?
I would really like to know who those are? Who are the legendary shit posters who get merited and who does the meriting? If for some reason you don't feel like discussing it in public, PM me a few names. I am curious if your assessment of a shit poster is the same as mine.

Haven't I seen a thousand times, in some thread that most users get merited for popularity or familiarity?
The thing is, there are no rules for meriting posts. There are only the rules you create and your subjective opinion about a post. Merit sources aren't allowed to sell their merits. That's it. That's where the rules stop. If I thought a post of yours was funny, I can merit it if I want to. Humor gets merited as well. Regarding the popularity and familiarity part, remember what I said previously about seeing the same group of people hanging out in the same boards. It becomes a habit seeing them there. You learn what they are all about and you understand what quality they can bring to the table. If you have a group of let's say 20 people with similar interests who write and discuss the same things and all of them are capable of participating in a quality discussion, merits start going back and forth. If you like being on the receiving and, you want to give other people that same feeling. That's natural and human wouldn't you agree? If someone does something nice to you, you feel like you need to reciprocate in some way. Maybe that's why you think of it as merits for popularity or familiarity. But you are wrong if you think it's some kind of close circle of friends working together and tapping each other on the shoulders. Do the things that the best forum users do and if you aren't appreciated or merited properly, then we can discuss what is going on. This is more of a general message, not directed towards you personally because I am not that familiar with your posting habits.

Is there a day I don't come active on the forum since my being active 3months straight? I make post everyday and as you can see,I'm not one of the shit posters- that's justifiable.
I really don't know how active you are. But I don't see you around the same boards or threads where I see many other people. If I don't see you there, others don't see you there either. But what I do see is that you have a decent merit to activity count. But even with 1000 merits to your name, you need the activity points. There is no ranking up without them.

Then ask yourself why the chymist, fillipone, the Thick-skinned gang leader, Ddmr, JAY, Ratimov, vapourminer, BitcoingirlClub and the rest have taken upon themselves to put the system in it proper function? You'll understand my whole point clearly.
I am not following sorry. It's time for my nap, maybe that's got something to do with it. When you say they have taken it upon themselves, are you talking about them being merit sources who get to decide who gets merited and who doesn't? Merit sources get selected by theymos or they apply to become one. They are picked based on the admins' criteria and whether or not he believes they can be trusted to do the job properly and not abuse the system. Just like in all segments of life, you select the best when it comes to more responsible positions, right?

Here is a lucky 7 merits not be because I agree with you but I do think you believe what you say.

I can honestly tell you I should have received 2000 or maybe 3000 airdropped merits not 1000.

But pre merit world 🌍 was way different then now.

I do thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of posts.

I posted hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of how to videos.

I also give lots of merits newbies jr members members

and I deliberately post in poor grammatical style as I never under stood james joyce’s style of writing.

along with not appreciating andy warhols campbell soup artwork.

in my old age of 65 i now think joyce and warhol rock 🪨

and your repost to this thread got you 3 more points

but right now I feel like the best way to profit would be to buy the miners, let them in their boxes and sell them as new once this bearish period is over.

Such a terrible idea, all mining gears lose BTC value over time, if one is confident that price will recover at one point, buying BTC directly is the best thing to do, however, I am also preparing for perhaps one last expansion this cycle, not because I think the markets are going to hit the sky tomorrow, but because I think we are close to the bottom than we were months ago, and I also think this side-ways action will still be there for months.

IMO, the best time to invest in mining gears is when buying BTC or even holding cash can't yield you anything, this is exactly what happens in a no-action market, like the one we have no and are about to have for months, while I do think we might still have one more leg to the downside, I chose not to try and time the market but rather DCA into the expansion, thankfully, I made good decisions before the collapse and expanded the infrastructure, because doing that now would be a terrible idea, so it's just about time.

So ya, I am shopping for mining gears now, just kind of hard to make up my mind, I know I want Whatsminers just can't decide on whether to risk buying used at nearly half the price or just get the new, the used ones are either M20s or M21s both which I have tested intensively and am very satisfied with, the new ones will be either M31s or M31s, I could possibly mix here and there but I hate to do that, I prefer to get the gear type so that I won't be needing many spares, just 1-2 PSUs, control boards and a couple of fans and then as the miners age, some of them will give you those spare parts for free, but either way, I should fill up the whole space by year-end one way or the other.

good luck doing this.

I have soooo very many paid for gpus.

So 2.13% drop, on the other side 6% drop in the past 24 hours for btc price, currently trading at 18.8k with no clear sign of any recovery, the war is escalating and everything is going south.

Oh, did I miss my chance of saying difficulty is going down, price is recovering above 20k, and everything is fine again?

I'm starting to think, if I'm facing 7c revenue per th a day, 0,75 kwh burned for each th/day, no real chance of difficulty going down enough to matter without the price also, this will be a game of who last longer, either due to the cost/profits or real breakdown of miners. Yes, I see Phil eager to get a new toy for his mining,I see others over Telegram,  but how many could still expand, and how many would take the risks of doing something significant in purchases?  And won't that make things even worse short term?

Yeah, I know, it's better to be ready when the bull market comes back than run after the cheap gear that is nowhere to be found when it happens, but right now I feel like the best way to profit would be to buy the miners, let them in their boxes and sell them as new once this bearish period is over.

You didn't have to dig this far for the post lol,

I like to go back in time and read them, I'm just so eager to finally get to that state where you learn from past mistakes, but for me it ain't working no matter what  Cheesy

Well they chopped up the bull this cycle. Maybe it has been a huge game of sideways. Just a flat grind that pushes out anyone with 10 cent power.

With eth pulling 17-20 million a day out of the mining market . We may be seeing the big miners and no one else.

OBVIOUSLY there will be players like me smaller and nimble with very good power prices but we will be very rare exception.

I see mining leaving us as a good way to gain coins.
7191  Economy / Economics / Re: GPU price in China drop to their lowest level in histor after the ethereum merge on: September 28, 2022, 07:52:47 PM
In a Bitcoiner's perspective, isn't Ethereum moving to PoS a good thing? Not sure about mining hardware compatibility, but wouldn't it be a safe assumption that some of the Ethereum PoW miners would transition to mining BTC? Bitcoin's mining hashrate is doing really well despite markets being quite bearish. https://coin.dance/blocks/hashrate

This a a very good question and it is hard to answer.

Eth was killer profitable to mine at dollar earned per watt.

the genius Mr V.B. pulled 17-20 million a day in liquid earnings out of the entire crypto system

he replaced it with 1.6 million a day in frozen earnings that won’t  be accessed for six months to a year.

So crypto is losing 7 billion a year in income that was liquid and churns for frozen money that sits.

I would say if you had 12 cent power you could mine eth and turn a profit with ease.

in fact a big gpu rig with 2000 watt draw burned 50 kwatts a day or 10 dollars at 20 cent power.

it did 22 dollars in earnings or 12 profit a day after power.

the best btc gear is an s19 xp it makes about 11 a day and burns 75 kwatts or 15 bucks

so the guy with 20 cent power making 12 a day with his big gpu rig mining eth
now makes - 4 dollars with the best btc asic gear.

you could mine at 20 cents with eth and make 12 bucks
you need -1 cent power with btc to make 12 bucks a day.

the eth gear would have been a 12 card rtx a4500
the btc gear would be a s19 xp 141 th

so basically  the genius set the entire world of crypto backwards quite a bit by going pos.

he directly attacked the founding principal of crypto give to us be satoshi POW 💥

Mr V.B. must sleep poorly

The most critical battle of our lives.

Between freedom & serfdom.

Bitcoin  vs.  CBDC.

I've never had cancer (knock on wood) but my most critical battle was fighting severe food poisoning a few years back. Drank funny tasting soda from the fountain machine, knew something was off about the taste, kept drinking anyway... exploded out of both holes for about 5 days, fuck that was terrible.

Other more critical battles of our lives include the Ukraine invasion which has definitely had a dampening effect on the price of BTC, the Fall of Sadr City, which marked the end of the Iraq War, and definitely the Israel-Palestine conflict which is coming up on its 75th birthday.

Cancer had it so far survived it. No signs of it coming back. Caught it early was lucky.

Asthma was hard real hard from 2-13 puberty kicked in and testosterone has held it at bay.

Compulsive gambling was very hard to stop.

Smoking cigarettes were hard to stop.

I would say Asthma caused me the worst suffering. Feeling like you are going to suffocate is a bitch.

Not a lot of meds were around in the early 60’s.

And puberty came at 12 in 1969 pretty much stopped the asthma by 1970.

I never have had an attack like the ones I had in the 60’s

I do use 3 iq air filters in the house cost = 3600 replacement filters run 900 a year.
And the iq car air filter costs 300 with a yearly replacement filter for 150.

Costly medical care for me but all out of pocket. so far no drugs needed
7194  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: First time/Small miner reference for getting started. on: September 28, 2022, 03:10:36 AM
Hi there,

I am just getting interested in crypto (especially Bitcoin as it's most well known) now. I have a decent (but few years old) gaming laptop...

I was wondering, is it possible to slowly mine in the background on such a computer, as a way to very slowly create my own wallet and gain I dunno... like maybe 0.001 Bitcoin at a time or something? (I understand you can sell/trade with partial Bitcoin, now)... I'm looking for a way to start small with the equipment I already have - as I'm super broke - beyond broke - and am hoping to make even a couple hundred dollars only with this (even if it takes months).

I'm regretting not purchasing bitcoin way back when I first heard about it in my University days, something like 2005~2007.... *sighs* If only!

Previously I did a light dabble into some other coin... I can't remember if it was Etherium or something else more experimental --- it had a browser addon and looked kind of like a crystal fox, maybe? Might've started with a Q? Reminds me of the GIMP (GNU/Gnome Linux free, open-source Photoshop) logo...  But I never got anywhere with that, and that was at least a few years back. My uncle had also recommended some new phone app mining program/cryptocurrency dealio that was purple, but it was so new I didn't trust it (?).

I'm not a programmer, but have often been programmer-adjacent. I'm fairly decent with computers, but still not very deep into things, though I can skim through some code, have a basic grasp of copy-paste-modify...

Basically, is there something people can point me to, a software or a wallet, that I can just turn on and have running in the background... perhaps with sliders "use 80% of resources" for when I'm doing something like writing, but then lower it down to like 10% or 5% if I'm busy gaming, streaming, editing video or something else more processor-heavy? then "100%" or even 110% if I'm just setting up and walking away?

I neither have the space nor money to set up any kind of fancy server tower.

TL;DR - Total novice when it comes to crypto, want to mine bitcoin easily to make a little cash on a LAPTOP, as insane as that might sound. Is that even possible?

If not, can someone recommend or point me to another crypto or two to look into, or another resource/website that might know something about mining the SUPER SUPER slow way with old gear?

Thanks!

You can go to nicehash.  Mine ETC or raven it will auto convert to btc

so technically you are not mining btc you are mining etc or raven and then automatically converting it to btc.

this section of the forum is for direct mining of btc

 not raven then btc

I am sure that more than 50% (maybe the percentage is even more dramatic) of the activity on the forum is due to paid signatures. even in spite of that, some DT members or those who had almost secured a place in a better-paid campaign have left the forum. just to imagine how different it would be without stimulation through signature campaigns.

I think its probably closer to 90% just going by how many posts have paid signatures underneath them. In theory sig campaigns should just be a bonus to people who were already posting anyway, and I think for some posters this still holds true. However, its pretty clear the vast majority are here just for the payday. This has led to an ingrained culture of shitposting-for-cash where genuine contribution is quickly buried beneath a flurry of dull, meaningless drivel. Most visitors who aren't already a member here aren't gonna wade through it to find the rare, interesting nuggets of information... they've effectively stopped coming here.

Yeah especially with the deviation from POW to POS.

Many no longer understand that BTC was purely POW and now with LN it is a hybrid coin.

This is a complex issue yet to resolve itself but since LN started we no longer have huge block fees like 1btc or more. So to fully understand the shift in BTC basics and the deviation from fee structure all the older info needs to be intact.

7196  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS+ support thread on: September 27, 2022, 06:45:09 PM
Unfortunately no. Bitmain played dirty tricks again.

In regards to the "J" miners, there are two different ones: Old ones, with pic in the hashboard, New ones without it.

You can only recognize he "New" ones when they come from factory with the PSU APW121215 rev D or later. You cannot use older PSU revisions with these "New" miners as it lacks the detailed power control. Old miners should probably work fine with the New PSUs though.

You cannot recognize the "New" hashboards without removing heatsinks, so be very careful with mix matching PSUs. Once Braiins OS supports the New miners, the log will alert if the old rev PSU is connected to new miners.

The APW121417 also uses these pic less hashboards.

I suppose the aftermarket PSUs will all just have to adapt for the "New" miners, but who knows.

Yeah, gone are the days where the PSU only supplies 12V... It changes dynamically within a range. Well the control board itself is still getting 12V (and feeds the fans with that).

Actually Frodocooper complained about these bespoke psu's back in 2018 when the s15's came out.

it is a pain in the butt if you have cheap power and a slightly older psu dies no one sells them and your gear is no longer any good.

I have 0 apw8's spares
I am down to 1 apw9 spare
I have 0  apw12 spares

So keeping older gear working just gets harder.
7197  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: ETHPoW on: September 27, 2022, 06:36:23 PM
I am focused on ETC. But EthPow could be okay.

If I have 10gh in hash on etc I earn 25 a day with 5 cent power my cost is 30 to mine it.

If I sell 2 3090's and 1 3070 for 1800 I have the cash for 2 months of mining.

my hash drops to 9720mh and I mine about 53 etc

If I do this for 6 months I am down to 9160 mh hash and have 159etc

And If I want to speculate on ethpow I could sell 1 more 3090 for 700 and buy a lot of them.
7198  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS+ support thread on: September 27, 2022, 03:53:29 PM
The only aftermarket psu i know that works right now with Braiins OS, is the Gullpower, specifically the GPW121215-8KW immersion PSU. Some crazy person managed to pull "Over 9000!"™ watts at the wall with it... So the thing does deliver.

The development team is also studying the Alphaminers, but for some reason those need extra firmware support, so i don't know when they will get supported. Last time i read they were making the 7kw model work, so i think it should get support sooner or later.

I suppose the model you linked was tested by the reseller so they would know, when i get confirmation from a third party I'll add it to the list.

Other aftermarket brands/models are unknown if they would work or not. The Gullpower was discovered by adventurous people who just tried.

Its the same way others also discovered the Zynq control boards C87 and C84 "just work", unlike that Beaglebone and Amlogic trash which imo are a waste of dev time and resources (they should be just thrown out), even if its theoretically possible to make them work, they do suck, very low capacity, poor cpu, etc. For example with the BB tuning takes much longer as it can't do all hashboards in parallel. Even Bitmain won't ship them if you break your board and ask for a new one you will get the C87 which is perfectly fine like the other Zynq.

Braiins is fully committed to Bitcoin, so the other algo asics will not be supported. Its also the reason altcoins were finally removed from the pool.

Fair enough about the L7

I will likely order some of those psu's from kaboomracks in the next few months. As I get tired of the s17 psu's burning out.

I have 10gh in gpu hash over 100 cards. The key is I have no debt on them.

my power use is 25kwatts at a nickel (less but it is too complex to explain all the different rates)

25 x 24 =600 x .05 is 30 dollars a day in power

I have it pointed to ETC and I am earning 0.88 etc a day times 29.16 = 25.66 in earnings

so 30-25.66 = 4.34 daily loss.

So I sell 3 3090 for 700 each 2100

and 2100/4.34 = 483 days.

now the flaw in that math is I would need to sell all the coins mined and use the sale of the 3 cards to break even after 483 days.

but  figure things like this method:

it is  30 a day  in power so 900 a month

Just sell 2 3090's for 1400 and a 3070 for 400 you have 1800 bucks you lose 280mh of your 10000mh in hash

That means you have 2 full months  power  paid off and you are earning 0.88 coins a day so .88 x 60 = 52.8 coins

So it is easy to mine for 2 months. you spend nothing (other than 3 the cards you sold) and you have 52.8 etc

So bigger miners with 100 plus cards are doing this.

I can do this for 6 months and have 156 ETC and my hash drops from 10000 to 9240 no out of pocket money.

Why panic.

Finally did what you needed to do. I mentioned you should do this in your other thread years ago.

I have a question will you consider doing bitmain L7?

Also I was considering getting some 'better' psu's

this says it will work with your software
s17 after market psu
https://parts.kaboomracks.com/collections/power-supplies/products/alpha-miner-psu-4kbm17-apw9-new

the 2 below do not say they work with your software
s19 after market

https://parts.kaboomracks.com/collections/power-supplies/products/alpha-miner-psu-4kbm19-apw12-new

s19 modded

https://parts.kaboomracks.com/collections/power-supplies/products/bitmain-apw12-psu-modified-from-used

they are supposed to be better made but will they work with your software?
