721  Other / Meta / Re: Ok, where is he? Trolling without a license again? on: July 04, 2014, 09:16:10 AM
I miss him. He's been around these forums since like forever, always posting. I wonder if he's OK. Hope so.
722  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Win free Bitcoins every hour! on: July 04, 2014, 12:33:31 AM
Keeps on saying "session expired" everytime I fill in the captcha.

I get that too sometimes. Usually refreshing the page (not sure if it's automatic or not) solves it.
723  Economy / Investor-based games / Re: Bitponzi.io - fair ponzi with automated hourly payments, 150% in 150 hours. on: July 04, 2014, 12:25:26 AM
One criticism I would make is that he's not clear about the end game. What happens when it comes to be payout time and he only has 75% of the amount he needs to make a payout?

Does he:

1) shut down, and keep the remaining funds for himself?
2) shut down, and make a final 75% payout?
3) skip this payout, wait for new deposits, then continue business as usual whenever there's enough to make a full hourly payout?
4) something else?

It would be good to have that clearly specified.

If my understanding of ponzis is correct, I would think that if new deposits slowed down, payouts would simply take longer and longer to fulfill.
724  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is "XXX is officially Dead" means that XXX is really dead. on: July 02, 2014, 04:14:07 AM
A coin is dead when it's 24 hour volume is low like under $100 000.

Check out Coinmarketcap.com. A lot of coins in the top 20 have a 24 hour volume lower than that.
725  Other / Beginners & Help / Good methods to obfuscate a paper wallet? on: July 02, 2014, 04:10:21 AM
I've printed a rudimentary paper wallet that's really just a private key and an address on a piece of paper. I keep it in a box under my bed. My concern is that if it went missing or someone broke into my house and stole it, my funds could be compromised. I doubt any thieves today would know what to do with a private key and would probably ignore it or throw it away but if Bitcoin becomes more mainstream, then the thieves of the future might realize what it is and figure out a way to spend it.

So how does one obfuscate a private key?

For example, a really basic method might be to pass the whole thing through a substitution cipher.

Or perhaps it might be possible to incorporate the private key into a coupon by scanning an existing coupon, embedding the private key into the space where the serial number is supposed to be, and printing it. Make sure the expiry date on the coupon is set to a date before the current date so that any thief who finds it will think it's worthless and won't try to redeem it.

Or find a really complicated-looking paper in a computer science journal and secretly stick your private key in the middle of all the code and equations so it doesn't look out of place before printing it.

Anyone got any other ideas?

- can you give me an examples of "dead but rise again" currency?

I'm not too sure since I'm not involved with these coins but I think BBQcoin was a dead coin that was later revived and i0coin was possibly another one as well.

-When the Currency is absolutely dead?
- how can i check the "current status" of the currency? how can i determinate is the currency is "dead", "dying", "feels good", "rising" and etc?

Would you say that Tenebrix and Fairbrix are dead? Most people probably would, but there are still people mining it and running nodes, apparently:

The Tenebrix network is weak, but still functioning. I've sent and received TBX as recently as this year.

I usually sync the blockchain with my wallet every 6 months or so, usually during computer spring cleaning time, during which I delete all the junk crypto files that accumulate. I could never bring myself to delete my TBX files, however. Altcoins come and go and are nearly all rubbish, but the original alts like TBX seem worth saving for the lulz, the nostalgia, or the history.

The Fairbrix network is a bit stronger, I've noticed, but not by much. Of the old altcoins, Liquidcoin has the most spotty network and is the only one I can't consistently sync. I was able to mine LQC until the end of last year, but the network has become extremely weak since then.

I see no reason why Tenebrix code couldn't be updated. IXCoin and I0Coin have been updated, indirectly because they have benefited from being merge mined all these years, which not only secured their networks but also kept the coins in the crypto-consciousness; whereas the non-MM coins like TBX and FBX have been relegated to mostly leftover PCs and slow CPUs. Yet it wasn't long ago that IXCoin and I0Coin seemed just as ancient as TBX.

I guess you could say that a coin is dead when there are no longer any people maintaining the network. But even such a coin could one day be revived. The code is open source, after all.
727  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: CoinMarketCap.com - Market Cap Rankings of All Cryptocurrencies! on: July 02, 2014, 02:50:42 AM
Interesting. Take a look at BCN on CMC. It seems that the double stars are now gone:

Not sure if NXT ever had them but it no longer shows them there either:

My thoughts: While NXT was premined, the premine was necessary in order for the IPO to happen. And BCN is a bit of a special case here, since there isn't really another comparable example of a coin that remained under the radar for so long (except maybe perhaps Bitcoin Wink).
728  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Are the anonymity coins a 'fad' (pump of the month) like the country and animal on: July 02, 2014, 02:29:32 AM
Are the anonymity coins a 'fad' (pump of the month) like the country and animal coins?  Darkcoin was pumped to a huge capitalization but it hasn't recovered yet.

Yes and no.

It is a bit fad-like but unlike country and animal coins, anonymous coins introduce a new feature to the market that is in demand. Animal coins faded away when the hype surrounding them died and every single country coin launched has turned out to be a major disappointment. But I think that there would always be the case for an anonymous cryptocurrency, although they will probably only appeal to a small niche once the current hype/craze/fad subsides.
729  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: LTC and NXT market caps meeting point on: July 02, 2014, 02:19:56 AM
Well let's see:

LTC market cap: $234 million
NXT market cap: $61 million

Assuming that they ever do intersect sometime in the future, the most probable point for this would be $234 million + $61 million ÷ 2 which equals $147.5 million.

So that would be my guess.

LTC has been doing quite poorly this year, whereas NXT has done reasonably OK so I wouldn't be too surprised if NXT overtakes LTC.

to start with the marketcap listed of nxt is a bit fudgy but anyways even with that its pretty much at its peak, freefall is inevitable.

It peaked around a month ago at ~10 cents didn't it?
730  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Litecoin just hit $2,21 on: July 02, 2014, 02:12:34 AM
Holy crap. Massive 12% drop on Coinmarketcap.com too. I thought whales were supposed to be smarter than this.
731  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which Block Explorer do you use ? on: July 01, 2014, 09:56:56 PM
Here are the block explorer I know:
https://blockchain.info/
https://blockr.io/
https://blockexplorer.com/
https://www.biteasy.com/
https://chain.so/btc
https://helloblock.io/
http://bitcoinchain.com/block_explorer
https://bkchain.org/btc

I mainly use blockchain.info just because I got used to its layout...
And when it is not working, I switch to blockr.io simply because of the slightly shorter name. Smiley

Same here. I use Blockchain.info but I switch to Blockr.io when it's down. For example, it's running a bit slowly at the moment and I keep getting CloudFlare errors. A quick check on Downforeveryoneorjustme.com seems to suggest that the problem isn't limited to me and the site seems to be down for everyone. Not quite sure why.

And thanks for the links! I didn't know there were so many of them. Interestingly, one of them (Blockexplorer.com) was made by theymos who is also the owner of this forum.
732  Other / Off-topic / Re: How you Use Your Laptop?? on: July 01, 2014, 01:20:33 PM
Pretty much what everyone else already said plus a couple more: Watching movies, surfing the web, learning about random things off Wikipedia, reading ebooks, posting on forums, listening to music, email, news, online banking, typing stuff, mucking about with programming languages but never getting anywhere, etc.

Not really that much into gaming however. I might be if my laptop wasn't 10 years old. Grin

EDIT: Oh, and Bitcoin too. Not mining of course but just running my Electrum wallet.
733  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New Egg accepting BTC? on: July 01, 2014, 12:55:21 PM
Even though TigerDirect was the first to accept Bitcoin in that industry, this is still very good news. Ever since Overstock started accepting Bitcoin earlier this year, many companies have begun accepting Bitcoin as well. Not only small companies but big ones like DISH and Expedia too. It seems like 2014 will be remembered as the year of Bitcoin merchant adoption.

Need Apple to change their stance on mobile wallet and payment application.

I thought they did?
734  Other / Off-topic / Re: Your Highest Loss IN A Day on: July 01, 2014, 12:37:23 PM
So there is already thread about "Your Highest Earning IN A Day " but what is your highest loss in day?

Decided to play around with forex trading back in 2011. Lost about $200 in the space of three days, or about $100 in one. Fortunately made most of it all back a few days later, withdrew it all, and never traded forex again.
735  Other / Meta / Re: Did my post get moved?? on: June 29, 2014, 10:19:45 AM
My guess is that it's been moved. Searching for "Quark Wallet - Mining Debug?" on Google reveals an older cached version that shows the thread in the Mining Support subforum. But that same thread is now in the Mining (altcoins) subforum.

This could be the reason for the move:

Do not ask altcoin questions, they will be moved to the altcoin subforum.
736  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mining Bitcoins with old rigs on: June 29, 2014, 09:21:29 AM
hey you cannot mine any thing with old rigs.. i mean you cannot mine a single btc with old rigs even satoshis so i suggest you to go and mine some alt coins like btc or ltc they can give you some profit..

BTC isn't an altcoin, and you can't mine it profitably with either CPUs nor GPUs nowadays. You could mine LTC with a graphics card but scrypt ASICs are now available which have the same hashpower but consume a fraction of the electricity costs.

738  Other / Off-topic / Re: Can you look at shibe dogs without connecting it to dogecoin ? on: June 29, 2014, 08:30:39 AM
Although DogeCoin is cool, I connect it to Doge before DogeCoin.

Same here. The doge meme existed before dogecoin was created. I believe it started on 4chan (or perhaps reddit?).
739  Economy / Investor-based games / Re: • CRYPTORY • — MAXIMIZE YOUR EARNING POTENTIAL WITH CRYPTORY! on: June 29, 2014, 08:01:13 AM
So is their business model real or fake?

I've heard of them being described as a Ponzi scheme and this thread is in the gambling section so that seems to support the theory. But the company is registered and they seem to be staffed by real people and have real offices and mining gear. I just watched their promotional video and still don't understand what the whole thing is about. Do they design ASICs like Avalon and BFL or do they sell cloud mining contracts like CEX.IO? Or is it both?
740  Other / Off-topic / Why are mobile phones so cheap these days? on: June 29, 2014, 07:11:19 AM
I remember my first phone back in the early 2000's which had no color screen, no camera, and cost about $150. It was difficult to find a phone under that price and very few sold for under $100. Now there's a store in my area selling phones with color screens and the cheapest one they have is selling for about $5. Normally they're a bit more expensive than that but it's still easy to find ones selling for $15 or less. You can also buy a smartphone for less than $50.

The cheapest laptops are only slightly cheaper now compared to back then (which seems to disprove the idea that Moore's law is the reason) and cars haven't changed in price at all since then so what the heck happened between 2000-2005 and now that made mobile phones get so damn cheap?
