721  Economy / Services / Re: Looking for someone to create/modify software for this forum [1700+ BTC] on: April 18, 2012, 04:33:54 PM
So, what is a status of this? Are bids still accepted?
My partner and I are still working on this.  Forums are way more complex than we originally thought, but it is coming along.  He has been busy with his "real" job though and hasn't had as much time as we had hoped.  Once we get the user system finished, I'll show off what we have and put a real bid in.

in the bamt.conf, there are values to set for core and memory, are these ignored when cgminer is at the wheel?
When I was using cgminer, I removed all of those lines from my bamt.conf and did everything in cgminer.conf

SecondLife Lindens -> VirWox -> BTC is pretty much instant.

Maybe it is smarter now and allocates 10K addresses for itself so that you don't need to be backing up all the time.
It does this, only with 100 keys. See wiki: key pool.

Yeah the wallet has 100 addresses ready in its queue - most casual users are not going to use more than this (especially for a crucial savings wallet - it'll probably only have a few addresses used), and I'm quite sure the deterministic wallets will become standard, so the potential problem of which you speak should go away on its own. I was trying to make the article somewhat future-proof (and had to keep it simple), so I didn't delve into nuances like this.

100 transactions ever isn't that unlikely. And probably by the time they are putting serious money in and then retrieving their backup they'll be past that. It is sends (new change address) and newly generated payment addresses (used or not, click that button 100 times and your backup won't work from that point).

Maybe devs could change the default to 1000 if bulk generation can/is done smoothly now. But that's still not foolproof.

Yeah, 1000 isn't that big of a deal, and really 10000 isn't either (as far as storage). This extra bit of data will make it so backups for 99.99% of people would be unneeded, which is awesome.
A backed up deterministic wallets has zero chance of losing funds and is a way more robust solution that just generating 10,000 addresses for the keypool

quick question for ya:

got a 7970, set it up, got bamt working and it's mining right now.

sort of a noobish question, but where is the cgminer.conf file?  i can see it hashing in gpumon I just don't know how to change the cgminer settings.
You can put the cgminer.conf anywhere you want.

I put mine in /etc/bamt/cgminer.conf and then put this in /etc/bamt/bamt.conf
Code:
settings:
    cgminer_opts: --config /etc/bamt/cgminer.conf

You can attach to the screen session and do most of the settings from inside cgminer and then save the config to get yourself started

Ah thanks so much!  How do I attach to the screen session?
Code:
screen -r

You should read up on screen first.

I actually ended up going back to phoenix instead of cgminer.  I get less rejects and a higher hash rate.

727  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitPak - The Bitcoin Wallet for iOS on: April 17, 2012, 06:04:03 PM

It's also easily possible to to x with device y, just install kernel u with options v and w enable (be sure to disable z).

I have some iFriends, telling them to install more than one thing per time we meet is prohibitive.

Well, as I have guided some people to use easywallet.org, the "installation process" usually takes just 1-2 minutes.

- open safari and go to easywallet.org
- add bookmark to home screen
- open safari again, click the app download link
- install the app
- click the easywallet.org app icon, and you are ready to go

I will add more detailed instructions & make this easier in the future.
Blockchain.info's app is native and works amazingly and is now on the app store.  I've been using it on my 4S and been really liking it, plus it is free!

729  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: iPhone IOS Bitcoin wallet is here! (From Blockchain.info) on: April 17, 2012, 05:27:23 AM
Loving the app on my iPhone!

I scanned a QR code from a payment request off blockchain.info in QRReader, and my phone opened up the blockchain app right away.  That's really convenient.  Glad to see that the apps integrate well.

I think having an unobtrusive donate link next to where you build transactions is a good idea.  Armory has the same and it makes it really easy to donate which I think is key.

EDIT: I've got a feature request.  Some sort of PIN lock would be really nice for at least the settings page.  You can see the "Secret Phrase" without having to enter anything.

well like i said originally, only 80mh, the payment is really basically costing more then my electricity anyway, so, oh well to the lost day. Cheesy
You should look at p2pmining.com. Its a p2pool node meant for small miners

Very cool.  I was looking at doing something similar until I started using BAMT.
732  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The responses I from Bitcoin discussions. on: April 16, 2012, 08:48:12 PM
People need to be more careful when using the term "backing" when referring to money. It has a very specific meaning but is usually perverted and causes lots of confusion.

"Backing" means that a party guarantees to exchange one asset for another upon redemption at a fixed rate. In the case of gold-backed USD, the banks guaranteed to give you gold in redemption for the paper, and this was at a fixed rate. Thus, the dollar was "backed" by gold. That's what backing means - a counterparty specifically promising to exchange one for the other at a certain rate.

Thus, Bitcoin is not backed by anything. Nor is gold backed by anything. Nor are dollars today backed by anything.

It is wrong to say that Bitcoin is "backed" by electricity, or cryptography, or the size of the Bitcoin economy. It is similarly wrong to say the USD is backed by the government, or by violence, etc. To do so is to pervert the term. Bitcoin is not backed by anything, and that is just fine, because it's a commodity unto itself and is valuable for its specific attributes. It needs no "backing" - it is a thing unto itself which we value. Same for gold.

If you find yourself in the position of saying Bitcoin is backed by something, change the term to say "Bitcoin is valuable because..." Or, "the USD is valuable because..." The answer to those sentences will be valid, and you won't be caught in the misnomer of "backing."

IMO, even with your more precise definition of "backing", Bitcoin is still backed by "(statistical) proof of work" and a public transaction record. If all of the miners decide to stop offering this "proof of work" or "puiblic transaction record" when it becomes time to redeem your coins: they are worthless.  This worthlessness would be despite the past "proof of work" and "public transaction record" used to generate those coins. The advantage Bitcoin has over fiat in this case, is that a group of people can get together and start building the block-chain again; in the unlikely event that the network shuts down for an extended period of time.

Sorry, for the run-on sentances Tongue

No, I think evoorhees was right.  Bitcoin is backed by "(statistical) proof of work." It has PoW, but that isn't worth something of value.  I'm not going to go someone and trade my bitcoins for a double sha256...

This is worthy of an announcement update (so I will post one soon) -- the Windows issues are completely fixed!

The memory mapping was preventing the Satoshi client from accessing the blockchain file at all!  I hate Windows.  But I'm relieved.  Fwhew!

I also got sick of the -beta-alpha version which made more sense if I was like 2 days from beta.  But I promised a new wallet format for beta, and that might still be a couple weeks off.

Find the new Win64 binary in (version 0.73-alpha):   https://github.com/etotheipi/BitcoinArmory/downloads

Did you mean "The memory mapping wasn't preventing the Satoshi client from accessing the blockchain file at all!"

736  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: April 15, 2012, 09:04:03 PM
I'll spend some time thinking about how to enable this responsibly.  Perhaps only in Dev mode...?   (though it doesn't solve the problem of someone sneaking a key into your wallet)
Perhaps you could make the "Ledger"  (Maybe turn into "Wallet Ledger"?) a drop down selection list. Have "Watching" one of the options. Then when "Watching" is selected it just lists all the addresses and the totals for each one. Add a little button "Add address to watch" and the user then inputs the Bitcoin address only. You could just enter any address. It scans the blockchain and finds the total. Something like that perhaps? That way the Ledger and Watching are never together in the same list.

It's not a bad idea for helping users do this without shooting themselves in the foot.  But I don't think it solves Red Emerald's problem, which is that he does want this address added to his wallet so that he can then use it for offline transactions.  Implementing your suggestion would be great for letting users simply-watch-and-nothing-else addresses on demand, but doing anything other than monitoring payments/balances would be complicated.

Right now, the only way to achieve Red Emerald's goal is to go to your offline system first, import the key, fork the watching-only wallet, then copy it to your online computer (removing the original).  It's a few extra steps for sure, and it could be improved.

However, regardless of the solution: discussing this just made me realize a very important feature I need to add (and is already kind of in queue to be added):  separate comments file.  Right now, all your address/tx comments are stored in your wallet, and there's no way to merge a new wallet in (as described above) without overwriting all of them.

I say this is "kind of in queue already", because I will need to do the exact same thing with P2SH scripts:  they will need to be stored in a separate, low-sensitivity file that can be dropboxed or part of some kind of daily backup.  You need that stuff backed up as soon as you create it (comments, not so important, P2SH scripts:  very important), but you don't want your whole wallet file, encrypted or not, sync'd to multiple other servers on the internet.
I don't actually care about offline transactions.  I just want the book keeping.  I've been doing it my way because my way was the only way I could think of.

738  Other / Politics & Society / Re: George Zimmerman arrested for 2nd degree murder for killing Trayvon Martin on: April 14, 2012, 05:36:30 PM
You shoot with a gun to kill, not to hurt or disarm.
Sadly, this.  Would be great if guns could be used non-lethally, but that is just Hollywood.  Not even tasers are called "non-lethal" anymore; they are "less-lethal" because people can still die.

Would be better if guns were not in the hands of crazies but hey, I'm certainly not going to argue the NRA-sponsored 2nd amendment.  Grin
Yes. True. It would be much better if Zimmerman didn't have a gun at all.

Great read, even for those who just want Bitcoin to be the currency of the Internet and not the world.
