When it comes to happiness I will take atheism happiness any day over what the theists call happiness. Theist joy is all about fearing God and giving in to his will.... while ours is all about being free of the chains of superstition.
I'm sorry if you found my "being in love" analogy tedious...but I still think it is a fitting one.  And the reason I can make statements about atheism is because, as you have frequently pointed out, it is an intellectual exercise of which I'm perfectly capable of thinking through (and have).   My entire point was spiritual experiences...just like falling in love...are not solely an intellectual exercise.  And for the record, I'm speaking in the context of theism, not Christianity. For now. And that is somewhat meaningless, not to mention it isn't true worldwide compared to theism.   You are mistaken.  I don't value atheism as much as I do theism, but I'm not expressing "disgust".   As for you experiencing me being condescending, well, first of all you hardly have room to talk on that score.  But I'm not going to apologize for believing my views are superior because if I didn't, I wouldn't hold them.   But I'm not trying to proselytize or convince anyone to change their mind...just sharing what I think.
You are in no position to judge my reasoning as you are not informed as to what either my belief or my reasoning about it is.  Dismissing that of which you are ignorant neither makes what I believe a "fairy tale", nor is that a logical or reasoned response on your part.  Furthermore, what I have been pointing out is that spirituality is experiential in addition to being intellectual.  As is your habit, you focus on the tree I'm not even discussing while missing the forrest.  Correction noted, but it is a non sequitur.  I never claimed one could reason their way to God using only earthly logic.  I am, in fact, stating you cannot.  But neither can you support your POV without faith either.  Well no, actually it wouldn't.  You can only describe your perspective from the outside about something which you cannot know having not experienced it.  And from the way you write, it doesn't appear you've spent much time on religious philosophy studies either.  Well, I'm glad you feel that way about what you've chosen to belief and put your faith in, but I don't.  I can compare the two as per my own experience...you cannot.

There would never be any domestic violence... or any other sort of violence... if there were no guns.Didn't you know that?
I've heard that criminals wouldn't use guns if they were illegal but I didn't 'hear that men would stop beating and killing their wives if there were no guns.
It's true!  And wives would stop beating and killing their husbands, too!If only we could make all the guns go away.
Well it won't stop prostitutes from shooting their johns up with heroin and then watching them die. Did you see the google exec that o'd at the hands of his prostitute? It happened on his yacht, he  had a wife and 5 kids.
If there were no killer prostitutes, millionaires with a wife and 5 kids wouldn't od on their yachts.
I own several firearms. I have never killed anything other than a paper target with my guns.  I admit that I have killed thousands of bugs by stepping on them or swatting them with a flyswatter .  Grin

Here is the what the news channels are portraying

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-28282291

I find BBC still the most reliable source. Lost faith in all other channels
Another good one is Al Jazeera - English. A bit on the biased side but still not fabricated

The reality is all over social media and its funny because even though its real and actually happening as i write this but yet we ignore the truth and just go on with our daily lives.
Directly or Indirectly we are affected by its outcome but yet we dont speak for or against it.
I feel bad for the generations to come because as we surely wont be safe anywhere on the world.

I would want to suggest a Senior/Trusted member to start a charity or donation wallet where all the proceeds are sent to Palestine for the people who are being affected by this act of Terrorism.

I can even help by setting up a website, social media pages for the person who will be in charge.

I would really like to hear your opinion about this.

Regards

Duke
Israel needs to stop these attacks. Enough is enough already. Both sides need to sit down and understand that no matter what they think and do it is their civilization that will suffer. Entrenching the idea of hatred between one country to another this way.

This will take decades to resolve. But until people can sit and talk like people and remove the hatred of their histories. Nothing will be finalized.

Geez, not another one.    Sadly, I am afraid that as a society we are becoming desensitized to not only guns, but to the entire issue of violence in our culture.  I realize there are historical reasons , as well as disturbing sociological issues at work.  But it is late and I need to be up early in the morning.  And I am incapable of providing workable solutions to the problems.  And even if I had the answers, no one in either in either Washington D.C. or Des Moines is the least bit interested in addressing the problems - at least not as long as the NRA maintains a stranglehold on the politicians in DC and the various State Houses.  God have mercy on us all.

I guess we've arrive at the stage of the conversation where after leftists declare they "care about the children" coming here in droves with no provision for them now or in the future, they engage in a mob beat down of those who actually have charitable involvement with those same kids.

Meanwhile, their petulant messiah who cause the problem gets yet another pass on his blowing smoke up their ass by blaming this on the Repubs for not passing a bill which would do nothing to fix the situation.
lol. Sorry, I was quite happy to discuss the issue on the basis of what we as a society should do with these kids and how we should address the immigration issues we face.
it was you who piped up with your declaration that "racist southerners" didn't care about the children.  The funny thing is that you think it bit me in the ass, as if batshit crazy libs have any influence on what I know to be true about what my SIL does or what I do to help her and others as you do nothing but pay your taxes and criticize those who are doing the actual caring.

1) Single Payer HC

2) Term limits

3) Abolish Lobbyist and groups
Term limits are not necessary because members of Congress must be regularly re-elected. If they are not doing a good job in office, we can simply vote for someone else.
Career politicians have no place in Washington. They are also subject to corruption, and the influence of lobbying.
Career politicians should be valued for their experience. If we regularly fill a Congressional office with a newcomer, we will lose the valuable experience on-the-job that person can offer in government.

Single payer health care. Improved primary education. Decriminalization of drugs. And the ability of foreign people to enter USA without having to apply for a visa.
So you support school choice and taking money out of the Union thugs hands and directing it to the students? Nice!Get Big Brother out of our Healthcare.Get Big Brother out of our Bodies.Get Big Brother out of our Wallets.
There is nothing inherently wrong with teacher's unions. Then what's the point of a union?

I agree with you on 2 and 3 (and 2's benefit is self-evident to everyone), but how would you accomplish 2? Why a single payer healthcare system?
Single payer system is the most efficient for the US. As a matter of practicality, single payer is definitely the most efficient.

Who needs firearms when you  have vicious guard pets? At pitbull …...or a crazy cat !   Grin
Our many tens of millions of Gun Owners have them for many reasons, self protection being only one of them.

The positive element is that we typically vote according to our Freedom from Government involvement in our lives, except the 18 elements in our Constitution.

Cowboy BebopHonorable mentions to Animaniacs, Ghost in the Shell (SAC), The Tick, Venture Brothers, Ugly Americans, Futurama, Powerpuff Girls, Invader Zim, and Samurai Jack. Yeah, I am still a kid at heart.

Running (about 20-30 miles a week) is my baseline form of fitness. It's not for everyone, but I love it. I also climb A LOT (like three to four times a week, a mix between the gym and outdoors) and next winter i want to start snowboarding.

Other things I don't own...A parachute..A chainsaw..A trailer hitch ..A hot air popcorn popper..Like a firearm...I hope I never need any of these things.
I'd reconsider that hot air popcorn popper.  My cousin has one and it makes great popcorn.  Plus you can add a tad more butter than normal to make up for that horrible, artery clogging oil, LOL!
Hmmm, avoid the oil altogether and simply take a lunch bag, put a little popcorn in it, fold the top down and stick it in the microwave and push the popcorn button . While that cooks without oil melt some butter on the stove, get the garlic powder and a bowl and then mix all the ingredients and enjoy. No fuss, no muss and you can make a little or a lot. No oil, no chemicals, no harmful ingredients and you can add as much butter as you want or flavor it any way you want.
Thanks, sana, I'll try that.  What I don't need is another gadget cluttering my shelves.
738  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do you own a firearm? on: July 14, 2014, 03:00:41 PM
Yes, I own firearms. I used to shoot competitively, in my youth.  I've always supported the right of American citizens to own firearms and still do. However, being a responsible gun owner, I feel obligated to support laws that make it harder for criminals and mentally ill people to get their hands on them. I also recognize that some places - some states and cities - have been reactionary in their approach, and always thinking that they have gun laws, but crime is still happening, they've instituted stricter and stricter laws that really only affect the law abiding. That's why I support a nationalized gun control policy.

Here in New Jersey, our laws (as written) require persons to submit to a background check (including being finger printed) to get a Firearms ID Card, with which they can purchase long guns and ammunition so long as they carry it. In addition, to purchase a handgun, an purchase permit is required. Within one calendar year of your most recent background check, the issuing authority (your local police chief or State Police Barracks Commander) may issue handgun purchase permits without requiring another check at his discretion. The law requires the process to be completed within 30 days of the permit request being submitted. If you are convicted of a crime, or are diagnosed by a licensed therapist as being a danger to yourself or others, your Firearms ID Card may be suspended or revoked, following a hearing.

I believe that this is a good model on which to base a national standard. In my proposed solution, this nationalized standard would replace ALL gun regulations in all 50 states, including those who have the overly restrictive statutes at this time, and would prohibit states and municipalities from passing further restrictions other than that which would apply in state or municipal buildings.
What if they can't get to the ID Card Office? Are you trying to prevent the elderly/minorities/disabled from owning firearms?

Look...if they can go thru the motions of obtaining a card for owning a weapon...they can surely go thru the motions to obtain a voting ID.

BTW...those using weapons and killing people today...will not be registering their gun and standing in line for an ID Card. Just thought I'd let you know.
