I'm always worried with used hardware, because I always assume buying a gamer card used means it's probably been thrashed, overclocked and messed about with.

Warranty is great if all you care about is ensuring the long term future of the card, but I'd rather spend the extra $50 than have the week of downtime on a card right now.
This.  There's usually not enough of a discount on used cards to warrant not just buying a new one in the first place.  Especially for mining, where lack of downtime is key.

However, I'd probably snap up a 5850 @ $150 if I saw one for sale.
7282  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: So 5850s are out of stock where you are, huh? on: June 06, 2011, 07:04:12 AM
Out of stock doesn't count, because they're not coming back in stock for most places.

And I wasn't really considering buying used, but I suppose that's a possibility for some folks.  Just makes me nervous I'll be stuck with a non-working piece of hardware that cost me $150, and have no recourse or way to get a replacement.

I'll give you 1 BTC for it.
7284  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: So 5850s are out of stock where you are, huh? on: June 06, 2011, 04:11:01 AM
Not really, in the USA I can pick one up used for $150 or less. There are plenty available.
Where?  I can't seem to find any for sale less than $180 or so.
7285  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Billboard! on: June 06, 2011, 02:48:12 AM
I'm pretty sure most stores use a moving average.  That said, 92.71 BTC for $500 is a price from long, long ago.

What software did you use to overclock?  Trixx only overclocks one of the cards...

So has this thing come to fruition yet or what?! I have told some of my buddies in SV to look out for it!
Ermm... see the picture?   Huh
7289  Economy / Speculation / Re: call an end to the rally on: June 05, 2011, 06:36:49 AM
My prediction is that I wish I had $10k to put in to bitcoins right now.

And lol, I think I called the end to the rally at $2.00 early on in this thread.  Or maybe a different thread.  Regardless, makes me laugh thinking about it now.

Wow... I count $4,703.10 worth of bitcoins.   Shocked

1k is probably enough for 5 x 5830's, so I am looking at smaller PSUs:

I think the above PSU would be sufficient for 3 x 5830, unsure about 4x

I am thinking either one of these would be sufficient for 4 x 5830
I'm actually only running three of them, because the top PCIe slot on my motherboard is dead.  But the bottom one is too close to the bottom of the case to use without an extender.

And I use that exact PSU for 3 of them.  I have a feeling it is overkill, but oh well.  I bet it would run 4 just fine...

You are using the CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX for three of them?
Yes, works just great.  I have one of them overclocked to 975mhz on a little more voltage too... would have overclocked all of them, but I couldn't figure out a way to do it with Trixx.
Just FYI, my 750TX just died last night.  I was running 3 5830's and a C2D processor (50%-60% usage).  I suspect heat had something to do with it, as the air coming out of it was always blazing hot, and I don't have any case fans (just left the side panel off).  Still, it may be insufficient for 3 5830's, so I thought I'd send out the warning.  I bought an 850w ThermalTake to replace it, as that was the only decent PSU available within a 2 hour drive.  Now I have the case laying on its side, so less heat will be directed through the PSU.  We'll see how things go this time around...  Smiley

Thanks for the warning.  I will be using a 1K psu if I was to do 4 of them.  Also do you regularly check the temp?  Did you know how hot it got?  I've been running mine pretty hot (low 70s to low 80s) and the cards seem to work fine (5850s etc).

I will be getting the new stuff this tuesday so we'll see what happens.
The temps of the cards were generally 70-85c.  I didn't check the temps of the PSU (is that even possible?)

Do you think that if the heat from the cards hadn't been directed to the PSU it might not have died? I am running caseless setup
Certainly possible.  I know that much heat doesn't help a PSU run its best, so it might just have died due to the heat.  Hard to say whether it was overload, or heat, or both.  I need to just hook it up to my battery backup to see how much it is actually drawing, but don't want to shut down my server to do so.

Ok, so now I wish I had 1500BTC to spend.  Tongue

Yikes, that's a steep price!  29 year ROI assuming revenue remains the same...

Has there been steady growth, and is it continuing?  What percentage of growth are you seeing per month?
7300  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 6990s worth it compared to cheaper video cards? i.e. 5830s on: June 03, 2011, 10:26:39 PM
One way in which 6990s win out is future re-sale value. They have staying power that 5830s likely do not. If you worry about BitCoin going bust in a year or so, and you find yourself with say 4 5830s, you might find yourself hard pressed to drop them as they fill kind of a weird niche (weak graphic power, high temp and power consumption at a price point that puts it against cooler sleeker used gtx460s). while a 6990 is likely to be a hot commodity for couple of years to come.

But it's unlikely that this will really be enough to tip the scales in the 6990s favor. I personally consider it to be one of the worst buys one can make other than say nvidia. For pure hashing the 5830 is the king of MHash/$ if you can stand the noise/heat/elec bill.
This is a valid point.  The resale on a single 6990 will probably be higher down the road.  I'd go for a 6990 if they were more reasonably priced, or if I wasn't able to get my hands on a 5830 down the road, but until then...  5830's it is!
