You can use as many PSUs as you want as long as you don't have multiple PSUs powering the same individual board (of which there is 9).
Do all PCI ports need to be powered?  Or will it run with 2 on each board?
2 is fine, still only about 165W per PCI-E.
Are you certain that using 2 is fine? The product description page says all three are required. It may be that each PCIe plug powers a specific set of chips; the 3 PCIe connectors may not share a common power bus at all as in, say, the S3 design. Without knowing the actual S5+ design, or having an actual unit to look at, saying "2 is fine" is only speculation at this point unless something more is known than what bitmain has disclosed so far.

Bitmain could confirm this here, but they aren't posting much these days. If anyone already has a unit, they could also confirm whether using 2 out of the 3 connectors works and post here.
What Bitmain customer Service told us was we have to use all 3 connectors for each board, As my understanding if each board need at least 382W(3436/9), in average each connector should be bear 127w@10.6A , and if it works  using only 2 connectors instead that will be 191w@15.9A for each connector , it is high risk to heat up or burn your cables if they are not good enough.
This still doesn't answer the question of whether all 3 are *required* by design, or can 2 be used if the cables can handle the increased current?

BTW the power requirements aren't as high as you mention: 3436W quoted by bitmaintech is at the wall, using a 93% efficient PSU. So the DC power to the S5+ would only be 3436*0.93 or 3196 watts, or 355W per board. *If* the design allowed the use of 2 connectors per board, this would put 178W per connector (14.8A). This isn't bad, considering S3+ units can easily be powered with 2 PCIe cables and those use around 355W as well.

They make a big deal about using 3 per board, so I would not try to personally.  They actually ship a piece of paper with some general instructions, and an email with it to.   And in all of them it made sure you use 3 per board.

So under pcie specs should it run if high quality psu with nice cables... yes.  But they make sure to tell you only run with 3 in each.  If you do 2 i'm sure it violates warranty.

Questions and Answers
Q: Do you need to use all 3 PCIe connectors?
A: I would stick with 3 per hashing board.  They make sure in email, and in a paper in box to tell you to use 3 PCIe per hashing board. You might get buy with it but it would void warranty.  I would say depends on gauge wire and quality of psu.  But to make life easy and in warranty stick with 3. Bitmain has made sure to tell us only use 3 not 2 with this miner in posts at this point.

Q: What version of cgminer is being used?
A: On my miner which is running the stock firmware that it was shipped out with it shows cgminer 4.8.0 being used.

Q: How many amps do I need to run this machine?
A: Bitmain is very specific on the paper sent with miner you will need 16 amps or bigger to run.   This is where you get into variations of installs as there is a few ways to achieve this.

Q: What about the heat?
A: With the metal case and a push/pull fan setup Bitmain did a very good job on making this miner better then the regular S5 on heat.  It still does have heat with the amount of electricity.  But the metal full case with push/pull compared to plastic S5 sides and no top with just push fan is a noticeable difference.
7364  Bitcoin / Hardware / [Hands On] Bitmain AntMiner S5+ - Notlist3d on: August 20, 2015, 12:00:49 AM
Hands On with the AntMiner S5+

0) General information
1) Manufacture Stats
2) The Miner
3) Install
4) Running the miner
5) Conclusion
6) How to purchase

0) General Information
The Bitmain AntMiner S5+ is the small miner that packs a punch.   I will do more of a hands on then a guide with this miner.   The reason behind my thinking is  with it taking 3436 watts to run setup will vary greatly depending on each persons setup.  This miner consists of 3 main modules with 3 blades in each.   The interesting thing about the modules is each appears to be built the same.  They make the main one with a controller screwed on top of the module.  But it appears if they wanted they could put controllers on any of them as they are built the same.

1) Manufacture Stats
Specifications:

1. Hash Rate: 7722 GH/s ±5%
2. Power Consumption: 3436W (at the wall, with AC/DC 93% efficiency, 25C ambient temp)
3. Power Efficiency: 0.445W/GH (at the wall, with AC/DC 93% efficiency, 25C ambient temp)
4. Rated Voltage: 12V
5. Chip Process: 28nm
6. Chip quantity per unit: 432x BM1384
7. Dimensions: 275 mm x 372 mm x 155 mm
8. Cooling: 6x 12038 fan
9. Operating Conditions: 0 °C to 40 °C
10. Network Connection: Ethernet

2) The Miner
Below are images to showcase the miner.

3) Install
The install is where it can very greatly for each person.  I personally went with a 240 volt 30 amp connection to a PDU.  From this PDU I used three of the suggested PSU's ( https://bitmaintech.com/productDetail.htm?pid=000201505040743496917U7kGsCm0694 ).  These PSU's made it very easy to install using one per module, they have more then enough PCIe connectors to give 3 per hashing blade.

The install time of the proper electrical cable, breaker, and pdu took some time but was done in a few hours even though a few snags running the wire.  I did this a day before receiving the unit so I had time to troubleshoot if needed.  Luckily no issues and all parts worked great.

This brings to install time of S5+ and PSU's.  This was done in only a few minutes.  After install I did set a static IP and input my pool's but went very smooth.

Below is some pictures of it installed:

4) Running the miner
Was very easy to set up and get running if you are familiar with the AntMiner GUI.  At this point I do have network settings set up with static, and my pool imputed.  I currently will not be trying to find best setup on under clocking, or overclocking as I did not want to break my warranty.  After it runs out I likely will see if I can under clock with and what results are.

Below shows the miner actually mining:

5) Conclusion
This is likely the last machine to use this generation of chips.   It does it well so far.  It had no problem running at specs provided, and install of unit was very easy with suggested items.   This is not a miner for everyone with amount used, but if you have an area for mining it is a lot of power that takes up little room for it's speed.   I will continue to run it and see what I think, but so far it is very positive.

5) How to purchase
You can go directly to the Bitmain's website: https://bitmaintech.com/productDetail.htm?pid=0002015081407532655504JMKzsM067B  The batch one is currently sold out.  With news of next gen chips it is hard to say if there is going to be another batch.

Please don't bash others, or try to turn into a ROI/other debate.  Yes things such as ROI and other topics have a valid point, but this thread is to show the hardware
7365  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: if my account has positive trust is it value pushed up? on: August 19, 2015, 06:18:36 PM
Yes, but at the end is almost the same, you can earn 0.10 more than a normal account, not more (if you're lucky because it is hard to sell an account, especially if this is a Legendary or Hero Member account).

I just cant imagine selling my account.  The hero/legendary someone put a lot of time into.   Even if I ever took a break from forum I would keep it.

I wish it told us how many hero and above have been sold. But I know it is not known.  Also wish it would tell if more after that hack on forums a while back.   I still wonder how many old accounts it brought back to forum through "bad" ways.

I think in perfect world no account would be sold.   But we do not live in perfect world.
7366  Other / Archival / Re: Diff thread Aug 8 to Aug 22nd picks are closed. Good luck! on: August 19, 2015, 06:09:04 PM
based on their sales  since feb 2015 they will not be giving them away.  my guess is same form factor as s-5 and 2-3th  thus 460-690 watts

since the s-5 was 341 or 1.5 btc plus shipping    these would be  okay at 3 btc plus .5 to ship or 3.5 btc .

lets say 3th for 3.5 btc shipped   uses 750 watts and breaks even in 263 days  3% growth and 225 for a  btc

so 3th  750 watts 3.5 btc shipping included lets see if thats what they do.

Sounds like a challenge? 2.5 TH/s @ $1000 plus shipping.
I would go for one of those as long as the fans don't blow the doors off, or pierce my ears with noise lol

I don't think noise will change.  They have been pretty consistent for last few generations on it is not quiet.  Yes S5 was very loud, but S4 was not quiet either.

I think noise is here to stay best advice is to get a place to put them that it will not bug you.
7367  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5+ is available to order, 7.722TH/S 0.445J/GH on: August 19, 2015, 06:04:59 PM
My bet is that the recent announcement of the BM1385 chip (for the S7) will curtail some of the demand for the S5+. Some folks will wait for the S7, currently unkdefined schedule, some folks will just take the S5+ now if they can get it.

The actual announcement of the BM1385 chip, even without an S7 schedule, will likely reduce the overall demand for the S5+.

I think it will effect it and other miners.   It will all depend on when the S7 comes out.

As of right now we don't know much just some released specs.   So S7 could be very soon or could be months they don't really say much on when S7 launches.  Also we don't know price of S7.
7368  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN launches 4th generation Bitcoin mining ASIC: BM1385 on: August 19, 2015, 06:01:05 PM
Then s4 and the lowers are just trash? Technology grows expeditiously so i will wait for s8 or s9. Coz i believe s7 will be trash the next year

Not trash they will just go to a place with lower electricity prices.   It's hard to say when it will happen.

Guess we will see once a product hits the market with chips.
7369  Economy / Digital goods / Re: Visa VCC for Bitcoins on: August 19, 2015, 08:40:20 AM
With it being a VCC it is a digital good.  If you go over to bottom left you should be able to move it there Smiley
7370  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain BM1385 Chip ( 230W / T) & AntMiner S7 Discussion Thread on: August 19, 2015, 08:36:37 AM
So when you say they released it today on chip.   When can we start seeing products with it?

Are they announcing anything else or just chip?
7371  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5+ is available to order, 7.722TH/S 0.445J/GH on: August 19, 2015, 06:06:11 AM
Of course we'll see another batch. There's no way that the S5+ is a one time event. But at this late stage there's no way it will run as long as the S3 did (what was that, 6 batches?)

Were hoping to see more batches but honestly its not a sure thing.  I think it is a good chance, but not sure.

If they were doing to get rid of extra chips we will not see it again.  If we see batch 2 we can expect to see a few i think.
7372  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How earn 1BTC a year? on: August 19, 2015, 04:26:33 AM
You need to earn almost 0.085 every month. It is really simple. Join in a signature campaign and you'll able to earn many than 1 BTC in a year, maybe 3-4, also 5 if you're a good poster Smiley

my earning from coinoindex per week 0.025 per month 0.1 so i can earning 1.2BTC per year Smiley
after my rank reached Sr membe my earning 0.05 per week so i can earning 2.4BTC per year  Roll Eyes

Yes depending on rank 1 BTC is very doable in a year.   A lot of it will have to do with how often you use the forums.

If your like me and ready it through out the day it's easy to do.   Just make sure you do posts with good content.   Having a signature makes your posts looked over more for content.   No one liners will do when in a sig campaign.

I am not defending dogie , but   he said it is cheaper to buy from bitmaintech then itop.

Now itop may not like that but that was true.

http://www.itopshop.net/world-biggest-miner-antminer-s5-bitcoin-miner-77-t-3436w-p-271.html

3299  plus shipping

https://www.bitmaintech.com/productDetail.htm?pid=0002015081407532655504JMKzsM067B

2307 plus shipping

so we are talking about a big mark up here.

My question to iTop is will you reduce price or keep the markup?

id consider buying from itop since he takes paypal, but the higher price is a dealbreaker.. i can see why one would charge a slight premium to cover merchant fees but not that much

There's this thing called "profit". Google it.   Grin

yeah There is and I can get one ebay at 2900 with multiple discounts and six months to pay it.

so competition  will knock iTop out.

One thing to consider on ebay is fees.  By the time ebay and paypal take a chunk of sales really these ebay sellers are making quite a bit less then iTop even though it looks closer at first glance.

I still think we most likely will see another batch.   And I could be wrong on that.  But I just think they have perfected making these chips at this point, and they can use a LOT of them in these S5+'s.  I don't see them turning down profit to pay for net gen.

Then again I could be wrong and they just did one batch to deplete old stocks of chips.

*Edit iTop now shows sold out. I wonder how many they had.   We will see if they were selling from all stock or selling some and ordering them bitmain.  I don't see them holding a big stock.

Also iTop said they had units for their warranty I wonder how many units if any they keep for those iTop sales if they need warranty work.
7374  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5+ is available to order, 7.722TH/S 0.445J/GH on: August 19, 2015, 03:37:52 AM
If you go with recommended PSU's it is required.  The PSU's they recommend don't work with 120.

But yes you could keep throwing 120 lines to lower power PSU's.  But would not make a lot of sense.   Just look at amount of PCI-e cables it takes.  But if you ROI'ed on a lot of ATX supplies and had multiple line's of 120 close together yes you could run it.

They "recommend" their own PSU and it has nothing to do with what is optimal, only what is profitable Wink

120V PSU's are no less effective at powering this beast, so long as each PSU has enough rating to fully power each board fully (only 1 PSU per board), but 12V is 12V.  240V PSU's gain a couple percentage points in efficiency, and when you get into the larger server PSU's they require 240V, but the hardware could care less what's feeding it.

The amount of PCIe cables it takes to run would not change whether you had 9 individual PSU's or 1 4000W PSU, not sure what relevance that has to PSU selection? The best PSU for the job is either the one you've already paid for, or the one that will do the job for the least amount of money that meets your expectations (efficiency, etc) without dying.

If you ROI'ed on a lot I agree it could make sense.   But 3 PSU's running on 240 makes a lot nicer setup.

Having 9 PSU's might work but just not the way I mine personally.   Again I can see why you would want to use them, but chances are those 9 are not gold.  If you had 4-5 gold rated PSU's that could do it sure go for it.  I personally just like gold or better getting that extra efficiency.
7375  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Making money off of internet bandwidth on: August 19, 2015, 02:34:31 AM
I don't know if I would trust any third party's utilizing my bandwidth. No telling what they are going to be doing with it, especially if it involves uploading, downloading, or transferring of files. If the content is illegal, you will be held liable as well. Not worth the risk for the minimal amount of money you might make off of it, imho.

That is the issue is the "legal" part of making money off of it.   I don't want to host files as I do not want "bad" things to be shared from my connection.  Not interested in doing torrents as sadly most are not legal files being shared.  So no I would not be doing this.

It is unique with it being a co-op as technically it's users own it.  I believe I can use the bandwidth as far as TOS, depending on what it is.

I just have not found a good legal idea yet.  Fileshare is for sure out though.   I don't want to have to monitor legality of use.
7376  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: best way for earning bitcoins on: August 19, 2015, 02:29:23 AM
I think the best way to earn BTC is to sell goods.
Sure you can double or triple your BTC with investment games but it is at your own risk, you can lose everything..

Gambling is not really a good way to earn.   It is a more likely chance you lose then gain BTC.

A mix is best.  For example selling and signature campaign.  Or in my case mining and signature campaign.  I just mix it up.   And yes I sell a few things from time to time for BTC.  For me it's normally older miners that would be better in a lower rate place then me.

If you're really experienced in sportbooks gambling, you could earn money easily.
But other than that just pure luck, you most likely will lose your money.

Mix is not bad idea, i have few friends who got bitcoin from signature campaign and use it for altcoin trading. Their profit about 50%-500% in a month,  more profitable than signature campaign or mining

If you win yes gambling could be huge percent gain.   But there is still risk that is why it is called gambling.

There is no such thing as a sure bet.  But I would agree your mentioned gambling could have much more skill then say a dice game.
7377  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: laundering bitcoins? on: August 19, 2015, 02:25:47 AM
Why are so many helping with trying to launder?   I think darkweb/laundering are not really what we should push for.

We want more adoption from "regular" users.  Yes darkweb exists but we should not be helping someone get coins to it.
7378  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Average mining ROI on: August 19, 2015, 02:21:45 AM
You couldn't buy the new Radeons, and resellers who did manage to get them in stock jacked up the price to double and triple the price AMD listed.  You only got those nice ROI figures if you happened to jump on a card early enough to get them at an acceptable price.  Same thing happened with ASIC hardware.  If you were one of the lucky few that managed to get into them early (and didn't purchase the BFL vaporware) you mined a ton of coin, and potentially made a fortune selling them at $1000 a whack at the end of 2013.

Now it's not so much a magic internet money printing machine Tongue

Even if you got in during middle of jacked up prices you did ok.  Only people who got screwed was last people to buy at jacked up price.

I know I bought some during the high rate and I ROI'ed.  I had some from cheaper rates though to.   And at end ebay really did help.  Was amazing getting all the money out of selling them.   I wish asics had a secondary market like GPU's had gamers.

I really don't think XT is helping us at all.  It is getting news, and seems to scare some.

And wow has this been a crazy day of price.   I just hope it goes back up.

Where did youy guys get it? I need one too.  Undecided

I'm wondering the same thing.  I would like for decent price.

You could get it now for 2k likely from some resellers.  But I don't want to go through reseller and kill ROI.
