@Hands, thanks.

Now, do you know or does anyone else know of instructions to put together a dummy plug for a DVI connector because that's all 6990s have? Or do we use a DVI to VGA converter and 'dummy' the VGA end of the converter?

Thanks!

Yes.

Software overclocking doesn't void warranty.
yes it does, although there's no real way to prove that you did overclock.

No. It doesn't.
743  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can I make this RIG more cost/hash efficient? on: June 15, 2011, 01:59:02 AM
OK, you don't need a DVD drive, you don't need a case, you don't need a hdd (you can boot from usb), you only need 1gb ram, and you only need a sempron.

That should save you a bit.
744  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Problem with brand new mining rig on: June 15, 2011, 01:55:48 AM
Hi guys, just got all the things for my new mining rig. is a: msi MB, sempron, 4 5830 & 875w PSU.

Installed windows 7 64bits, and catalyst 11-3. Using 1 monitor, and the other cards have dummy plugs.

My problem is that the cpu usage gets really out of control, opening just 1 window spikes it, and while mining cpu usage is 100% all the time!

Please what should i do? use linux? never used it, would have to learn it from the beginning   Embarrassed

Halpz!

Pretty sure that was a bug with 2.1(?), update to 2.4 and it should fix it.
745  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Does any body know of a bitcoin bank? on: June 15, 2011, 01:46:24 AM
I was thinking about clearing out my client.

Just send them to MtGox or a private online wallet (like MyBitcoin).

I do NOT recommend you overclocking to 1025.

Information:
==========
1) 5830 uses more energy/wattage than almost any other card, specially @ 90% fan and overclock
2) Stick to 975/340 and you'll easily get 301 mhash/s with 70% fan speed.
3) 1025/325 is expensive ($$ pay for electricty)
4) Fans in general have only a certain # of life cycles (The more they spin, the less life-time they have) 90% way too much.

Fan's only have so many cycles, by upping the speed to 90%, you are reducing the life of your card.
Overclocking already voids the warranty, I wouldn't do anything further unless you really don't care about the GPU.

I speak from experience:
===================
I have 6x5830's setup with the above settings (975/340).
Anything over really is not worth it.
I've tried XFX and Sapphire cards, same setup works for bot chip-sets.

I keep my cards cool to 55-60 celcius, sometimes hits 62 but hey, it works just well.
Anything over 975 for me made everything just unstable.

Hope this helps.

Software overclocking doesn't void warranty.

bla bla bla, you must install .net framework v4.0
iv got .net 4.0 installed already so what gives? no other software on my computer complains on the framework.

Wtf? Really? It's compiled against v2. Hmm.

749  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoinweekly suggests a guard against the 51% problem on: June 14, 2011, 01:44:38 PM
So, since I'm a newbie and locked out of the main forum, I'll post my stupidnoobquestion here.  To be fair, it's probably for the best since I'd likely get flamed out for being a repetitive troll otherwise... but... I haven't seen this particular suggestion before:

From http://bitcoinweekly.com/articles/taking-down-the-bitcoin-network :
Quote
If it is technically viable, I would suggest that the network be configured now to reject any block from a source with 50% or greater of the processing power. I'm afraid I don't have the technical knowledge to explain how, or even know if it's possible to pre-configure that, but it is something I would like to see, as it would close the only real security hole Bitcoin has.

Is this possible?  Is it a sensible solution?

Cheers.

AFAIK, theres no way for the network to know who the block is coming from.
750  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MTGgox seems to be down??? on: June 14, 2011, 01:42:50 PM
Anyone else notice that MTGox.com is down???  Any ideas as to why?

Yes. Either they're moving to a new server or being DDoS'ed. Nobody can get a straight answer.
751  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Got all my mining rig gear, should I use windows or linux? on: June 14, 2011, 01:40:44 PM
Is Linux a more stable mining environment then in Windows? After a few hours my 2 5830s start getting errors inside of Phoenix miner or the VPU recovery window comes up and I have to restart or I'll get a BSOD. I am running Windows XP SP3 32bit with latest display drivers and ask 2.4.

No. But most people find it easier.

And XP is probably your problem.

753  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MT. Gox seems down on: June 14, 2011, 01:23:35 PM
cannot access to Mt. Gox from lan & phone.

It's being DDoS'ed.
754  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Namecoin and bitcoin mining question on: June 14, 2011, 01:22:29 PM
Since there is this newbie restriction please help me here.

First about bitcoin miners. I'm using a guiminer and everytime i try to load video or some webpage loads a video while the miner is on it crashes. No matter what i set fror the -f or -w value for. Any workarounds for this? I would like to us the power of my oc'd 6950 while watching movies etc.

And then about namecoin. For some reason i did not find a usable guide how to set it up on windows/or requirements for it. I installed it and when i try "namecoind.exe getnewaddress" i get:
C:\Users\... ...\namecoin_win32>namecoind.exe getnewaddress
error: couldn't connect to server

I am behind NAT and some firewall that i have no access to. Any way to get it working?

1) Disable hardware acceleration. On the video, right click > Settings > Untick.

2) Doubt it.
755  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Got all my mining rig gear, should I use windows or linux? on: June 14, 2011, 01:19:43 PM
Thanks Hands...will tightvnc work over wifi? I'm at work and the site is blocked...

someoneweird: do you mean guiminer?

It should. It's only local.

And no, check my sig Wink V4's being released in a few minutes.
756  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Got all my mining rig gear, should I use windows or linux? on: June 14, 2011, 01:09:28 PM
I would go Windows if you have the license..
A) you have paid for it..
B) its very easy (and just as fast, maybe faster because of the OC tools out there)
C) dummy plugs are not a limiting concern because they are ridiculously easy to make -> http://www.overclock.net/folding-home-guides-tutorials/384733-30-second-dummy-plug.html
fyi: I like to wrap my dummy plugs in electrial tape once I have finished the 1 minute construction process.

Also the new GUIMiner with Phoenix and phatk support is awesome!

I have 3 rigs all setup the same... I get them running with a monitor hooked up (and 1 dummy plug in each of the rest of my videocards), then I go download tightVNC http://www.tightvnc.com/.... Once I know tightVNC is installed and I can connect to the machine, I shut it down. move it to its new "home" in my house, give it a network connection, power, and a dummy plug for that last card and turn it on.. Then I walk back to my laptop, login over tightVNC and kick off my miners (and usually Afterburner because I like to keep track of my temps and tune voltage & clock speed).

* You may have to go into to your screen properties and actually activate the other monitors to get all of your GPUs to activate

Don't use Remote Desktop.. MS is smart enought to know that a remote desktop connection isn't actually using the screen so the GPUs are disabled/blocked from your session. Thats why I use tightVNC.

+1. And don't forget BitMiner Wink
757  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Got all my mining rig gear, should I use windows or linux? on: June 14, 2011, 12:44:22 PM
950 watt power supply
MSI motherboard
4 ati 5830
1gb ram
wifi adaptor
left over hard drive I can use if I do windows

I'm considering using linuxcoin and 4 dummy plugs...would this machine run windows 7?
I'd prefer windows because its easier to overclock the video cards...

unless linux can overclock them? I have no experience with linux but I'm pretty good with computers otherwise...

Linux, then you don't need the dummyplugs. And yes you can OC with linux.

Unless you have the dummyplugs then go for windows, it's easier to OC.

759  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Integrated GPU mining on: June 14, 2011, 12:03:40 PM
Basically ..if you can't find it on this comparison list you probably don't want to try, because your electric bill will be greater than your income.
Besides of that, it probably have never been tried. In case you get some mining software up and running you want to enter your Mhash/s in that list.

Open CL isn't supported on integrated GPU's. Locked

Can any soft mine on Radeon HD4290 GPU?

No.
