This is what TradeFortress is doing - people gave him "trusted" status, so he can virtually create money (455 BTC up to date) - because inside Ripple you just trade IOU's - the only thing is not a IOU are Ripples.
This thread from TradeFortress finally made me understand Ripple, especially the last part of the thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=206948.msg2209470#msg2209470 where web3er got his 10.15 Bitstamp-BTC exchanged for worthless TradeFortress-BTC because he basically told the Ripple-System that for him any Fortress-BTC are equally good as Bitstamp-BTC. And so the system automatically took his Bitstamp and gave him TradeFortress in exchange when the system needed some Bitstamp instead of TradeFortress on someone else's behalf. Reading this thread (just reading it, not participating in the experiment!) has finally made me understand how Ripple works. There were many threads that tried to explain Ripple, somehow I just did not get it because nobody could really explain to me exactly how the ownership of value (or the promise of such) propagates from A over B to C in Ripple and what it all means and its implications, now after reading this thread I finally understand. This thread is highly educational! Especially the explanation what happened to web3er's ฿10.15/Bitstamp finally made it all clear to me! Thank you!

I'm a little confused by the above chart. I can clearly see sell orders for 3377 BTC between $118.00 and $118.99999 on Clark Moody but nothing shows up on your chart in that area.
What does it represent ?
Its a depth chart. Its the same data that clarkmoody would show if clarkmoody would work correctly. I would not rely on clarkmoody at all for trading, it is extremely buggy and shows orders where there are no orders anymore, sometimes you even see asks lower than the highest bid and bids higher than the lowest ask. |

Another noob question: Why is Mt.Gox<->BTC-e price difference so great? Obviously something's making arbitrage unprofitable, but what?

I have pushed that change to the gist (please test it to make sure it still works, I had to clean up my code and remove some other experimantal stuff from my own version before committing) there are now 2 new variables: FIAT_COLD = 0 # Amount of Fiat stored at home but included in calculations
COIN_COLD = 0 # Amount of Coin stored at home but included in calculations
If all your money is at mtgox then these must be both 0. If you want to pretend you have more money than what is in the mtgox account then simply add non-zero positive numbers here. Example: You own 42฿ and want to run the strategy with all of them but you only want to put 20฿ into MtGox and keep the other 22฿ at home. Then you just set COIN_COLD = 22 and the bot will include your cold coins in all calculations (which means the order sizes will be larger). You can do the same also with USD you don't want to store too many USD at the exchange all the time. Note that when doing this it might easily run out of coins or USD if price moves too far in one direction. In this case you have to cancel all orders (press "c"), (also press "i" and write down the current imbalance for later comparison), stop the bot, then send enough of the cold funds to MtGox (and maybe also withdraw some from the other side if it has become too much), then adjust FIAT_COLD and COIN_COLD to reflect the new situation, wait for your funds to arrive in your account, start the bot again: First press "i" and compare the numbers to make sure the bot calculations are still correct (if not then try to figure out your mistake and fix it, if its as expected then restart the bot), if it is too far out of balance rebalance with "b", otherwise just start it again with "p". |

$100 is still not enough, thats not worth the electricity running the computer. It starts with $5000 or $10000 and it becomes interesting with $100k or $500k (one can modify the code to add offsets to the account balance, so only the absolutely needed money must be in MtGox and the rest can be stored in safer places, maybe I could post this modification, I'm using it myself) |

It's not much. About 0.036 BTC and $5.44. It's been generating 0.01 buy/sell amounts.
This is not enough. 0.01 is the minimum order size at mtgox, the bot will adjust the order size to reach at least 0.01 and this is just too much for such a small account. |

@kvm why don't you use Mt.Gox's API? It's real time, minus the 30 second delay between requests...
You can also use MtGox websocket API, then its realtime streaming without any noticeable delay at all. |
