7401  Other / Archival / Re: Binance introduces KYC for all users on: August 20, 2021, 08:49:33 AM
Oh what kind a circus this is, I think that 0.06 BTC daily withdrawal limit on Binance lasted only one week after they reduced it from 2 BTC.
However, I checked my old account that I don't use anymore and I still don't have any of those new limitations, and it is still showing me old withdrawal limit, maybe it needs time to be applied to all users.
There is currently class action lawsuit against Binance so that could be one of the reasons they are doing this.
7402  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: PiTrezor DIY Hardware Wallet (with a twist) on: August 19, 2021, 04:29:49 PM
What are you basing this on regarding Ledger being totally closed-source? Has it something to do with the reproducibility? The code handling the secure element is closed-source. The Ledger Live app, and the rest of the wallet is open-source if I am not mistaken.
Dude I don't care about crappy ledger live app, all their hardware wallet FIRMWARE is 100% closed source and you can confirm that on github doing some basic search.
It has nothing to do with reproducible code, it's just closed source junk like Safepal, Coolwallet, D'CENT and others, so there is nothing to reproduce.
Other hardware wallets are open source, and they have closed source secure elements (ColdCard, BitBox, Passport, Keystone...) so it is possible to make it like that if you want.
7403  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who is trying to register Bitcoin trademark? on: August 19, 2021, 02:19:04 PM
Somebody managed to register Bitcoin as a trademark, alongside registering its logo, in Spain, just over a year ago.
Interesting, and I didn't know about that info.
His name is Eduardo Pérez Montero and he registered it as national mark B bitcoin.
I also remember fake martial artist and bad actor Steven Seagal running a ICO scam that was registered as Bitcoiin with two letter i  Cheesy

I wonder if Roger Ver tried to registered something for Bitcoin, because he is one of the owners of bitcoin.com domain and exchange, but that is not the same as registering Bitcoin trademark, as we know that he tried to takeover the Bitcoin brand.
There is however a difference between a trademark and a brand.
7404  Economy / Exchanges / Re: which exchange give you signup bonus? on: August 19, 2021, 01:03:01 PM
I think that Gemini exchange was giving $10 in Bitcoin when you first sign up, but I don't know if that is still available, and similar thing was for Okex exchange.
Bybit and Phemex derivatives exchange was also offering even bigger sign-up bonus but only with referral codes.
It's important to know that you would need to pass kyc verification for this centralized exchanges, and I always suggest skipping that and going decentralized way of Bisq or P2P trading.
Do your own research before signing up to any crypto exchange.

7405  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is more Marxist Incline on: August 19, 2021, 12:39:22 PM
Bitcoin didn't kill and torture anyone or put people in concentration camps for reeducation like twisted marxist ideology was doing, so there is nothing that relates this two.
If you didn't want to be marxist or you didn't agree with them you got killed or sent in gulag or chinese camps, and nobody is forcing you to use Bitcoin.
Marxist and all similar ideologies like fascism or globalism want to have full control over every aspect of human lives including money and economy, while fake ''elites'' become richer, regular people are getting more poor and slave-like.
Bitcoin is decentralized, can not be controlled, and there is no single center, ceo or person that want's control everything, so your theory is simply wrong.
7406  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin for Afghanistan and Taiwan on: August 19, 2021, 12:22:19 PM
Don't hope you can run and escape global economic collapse that is slowly spreading around the world, so US or EU and not really safe havens and could soon turn more into newage concentration camps like in Canada or Australia.
I would say that safest countries are located in Latin and South America, but only outside big cities, and I think that having some Bitcoin and other hard assets is essential for surviving upcoming years.

Depends on how you store your Bitcoin. Hardware or mobile wallet could be risky if the inspector have knowledge about storing Bitcoin and decide to check your stuff / smartphone.
You know that iPhone can now scan your phone for your ''safety'' and I think that most smartphones have backdoors that governments can hack even without your permission, there are even laws forcing you to tell them your password, and that is crazy!
Similar thing can be said for hardware wallets, but miltisig fixes this and you can just bring seed words with you, maybe even in binary form like this on metal or paper:

7407  Other / Archival / Re: Liquid exchange hacked for $80 million on: August 19, 2021, 11:35:50 AM
I never used this Liquid exchange but that is something you can expect to happen with all exchanges sooner or later, so don't keep coins on exchanges if you want to avoid losing them.
I see that etherscan explorer already tagged his address as Liquid Exchange Hacker 1, and stolen Bitcoin is still not moving from his address.
Here is Elliptic blog post saying that total value is over $94 million, and hackers used uniswap and sushiswap for converting tokens to ethereum:

7408  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: August 19, 2021, 10:44:46 AM
Does anybody know what's the "surprise gift" that's included on the FE ones?
I think this could be free Bitcoin whitepaper by Satoshi Nakamoto looking like a passport  (I hope Faketoshi won't sue them for this Cheesy), but I am not sure if that is actual surprise gift.
There are some QR codes in package coming in package so it could be some free sats or it's just links for Foundation website.

Just found out it comes with an interesting [probably not for everyone out there, but it brings back good old memories] "secret" menu.
Yeah, I saw that hidden famous retro game that every old Nokia user knows Wink
7409  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: PiTrezor DIY Hardware Wallet (with a twist) on: August 19, 2021, 09:25:47 AM
This is cool and most of the component are easy to obtain. But since the microSD could be removed easily, what kind of data could be extracted from it?
Everything is stored on SDcard on PiTrezor and that is the main difference compared with original Trezor wallet,
SD card here have the same function like flash memory in Trezor so anyone with that SD card can access your seed words and get your private key.
That is why adding Passphrase is mandatory for PiTrezor, and removing SDcard separating it from wallet on different place is also good for security, even better than on Trezor.
7410  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: August 19, 2021, 08:50:36 AM
It really does have some nice features, but given that I already have 3 or 4 hardware wallets, I can't really justify the $299 price tag just for a couple of "nice to have, but not essential" features Undecided
I always liked small electronic devices even before hardware wallets, and bunch of those devices are just collecting dust and maybe I used them only few times in my life.
This reminds me about one funny 2020 tweet from Jameson Lopp regarding possible problem with his hardware wallets collection Cheesy,
but having multiple hardware wallets can be used for improving security with multisig, and one device will die sooner or later so you always have replacement ready.

7411  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: PiTrezor DIY Hardware Wallet (with a twist) on: August 19, 2021, 08:23:16 AM
and maybe more vector attacks?
I don't use bunch of shitcoins so I don't care about that, but I know that Trezor model T supports monero, unlike Trezor One.

AFAIK, Pi has no secure element inside so all procedures on generation of keys, their hold and security were left to the  mercy  of code which might  have flaws that open doors to malicious apps relevant to those coins.  I would not trust any homemade product when it comes to cryptocurrencies you posses. Saving a few bucks...hmm, it's not worth it.
Have you seen list I created with hardware wallets with secure elements?
All of them have secure elements but that doesn't make them any better, especially if they are closed source like ledger, they can hide backdoor code for years.
Using passphrase with open source hardware wallet is much better than using closed source cat in the bag hardware wallet.

Speaking of closed source, it's closed exclusively for microcode which runs the security element  and it's not as bad in regard to hardware wallet as it looks.
Not exactly true. Ledger is totally closed source, same like Safepal hardware wallet, maybe BitBox, Coldcard and few other wallets operate like that.
Anom phones also had hidden fbi backdoors and nobody knew about that for years, and you see how closed source iPhone now started to track what people are doing on their phones.

A very cool little DIY project... One of the advantages that the "Trezor" ecosystem has had is that it doesn't rely on a secure element.
2022 should be the year of first open source secure element made by Trezor, and that is game changer new generation hardware wallet.
7412  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Idea for a watchdog fork on: August 18, 2021, 06:25:20 PM
What you think?
Honestly, this is probably one of the worst ideas I ever heard on this forum, and I heard some that are terrible.

This is pure waste of time and resources for some imagined quantum threat that would wipe out all security if it existed, not just Bitcoin related.
Nobody is going to agree to make forks like this and nobody would mine double coins like this, or maybe you planned to eliminate mining and make one more ''better'' and more secure version of Bitcoin?
7413  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who is trying to register Bitcoin trademark? on: August 18, 2021, 06:14:40 PM
This is just my speculation, but I suspect that one person with nickname Faketoshi aka Craig Wright, is trying to register Bitcoin trademark as his own creation, in same way like he is claiming that Bitcoin whitepaper is his copyrighted creation.

7415  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Redphone - telephone service for Lightning Node on: August 18, 2021, 03:13:10 PM
I've been building LN stuff for 3 years now, you can find my other apps on kriptode.com
Page bookmarked.
I didn't know that so many apps exist for Lightning Network, Sms 4 Sats looks interesting and those games are also cool.
Like I said before, we need to have separate Lightning Network board in bitcointalk forum.

I didn't know about other privacy implications of webrtc re: fingerprinting etc. It might also be prone to timing attacks if a state actor wants to identify the parties.
I don't know how it works exactly, but it is more related with web browsers that have webrtc when people are using vpn's.
This restoreprivacy page may explain this issue better than me:

7416  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: PiTrezor DIY Hardware Wallet (with a twist) on: August 18, 2021, 02:47:51 PM
At 67$ GamePi is already at the cost of Nano S.
But I guess that this Pi based design may offer bigger flexibility (maybe more coins?), I didn't look at the git though (I may do that some other day).
I found GamePi device locally for around 35$ so I don't have to pay any shipping cost, and online price on other websites is also around $30, I just liked the image I posted from waveshare website.
PiTrezor is supporting same coins as Trezor One, but Trezor Model T is supporting more coins, it has bigger memory and everything is entered on device not on computer.

Developer comments on his website:
Quote
The current OS is based on yocto but yes in theory another OS like raspbian should work. However, it would require to apply the same patch (kernel linux patch) to work properly.
For the model T, I didn't invest time into it as it would require a color touch screen LCD and that would increase the cost of this project.
Quote
For the model T, I was not considering whenit I started this project as it required a touchscreen color lcd and that was expensive. However, things have change since, price are going down and trezor support only some coins on the model T. So this is something I am considering to check in a near future.

7417  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / PiTrezor DIY Hardware Wallet (with a twist) on: August 18, 2021, 01:55:53 PM
Few years ago forum member yheneaul made a cool project PiTrezor DIY wallet based on Raspberry Pi Zero and modified Trezor One code.
Interesting thing is that PiTrezor code is still updated on regular basis, and latest version 1.10.2.0 was released less than a month ago.
Raspberry pi zero can still be purchased easily for only 5$ and it is available on internet or in local electronic shops, all you need is to 3d print the case, OLED screen, cable, and load the code that is fully Open Source.

Original design and case was made by developer, but other people are making their own variations:

Github page:
https://github.com/heneault/yocto-pitrezor

Website and video instructions:
https://www.pitrezor.com/
https://youtu.be/YrKo0QGWIuY

One guy 3d printed alternative version of PiTrezor case, then posted it on reddit, and few more STL files for printing are available for free download on Thingiverse website.
He used Raspberry Pi Zero WH, generic 128x64 OLED screen, and loaded same PiTrezor code by yheneaul.

Reddit source

My twisted idea would be to use GamePi20 that is based on Raspberry Pi Zero, costs around $30, and then load the same PiTrezor code on it.
There is already built in 2 inch IPS display, metal bottom, Micro SD Card, buttons and cool looking retro portable game console casing, so only question is if this can be modified to work with PiTrezor code.
Even better option would be to have modified version of Trezor Model T instead of basic Trezor One, but I would need to talk with developer to see if this is possible.

Sure, I'm glad people find it interesting, I'm sure others will come up with even cooler stuff. I just made the first thing that I could finish realistically before hackathon ended 😁
I see that hackathon is ending soon on August 20, so please let us know about final results and who won those BTC rewards, and continue working on more projects like this.

Thank you for explaining about Webrtc, and I know it can be used for tracking and fingerprinting so privacy oriented people are disabling this option in their web browsers, that is the reason I asked about it, but I am not sure how this works in your app.
7419  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Best Hard Drive for Bitcoin Node? on: August 18, 2021, 08:05:42 AM
One thing which I'm fairly sure wasn't mentioned as yet... have you checked the actual voltages coming out of the PSU? Huh
I haven't checked voltages until now, but changing the cables and port worked very well and I don't have any disconnects after that.
One of the things I initially did was to disable hard drive going to sleep in power settings, and now I am monitoring voltage showing 12V correctly.

Getting back to shingled SMR slow drives, one of the interesting things I saw for improving speed for Hard Drives if you have supporting processor is using software called AMD StoreMI that combines SSD and HDD into drive, problem is that this software is only for Windows OS.
7420  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is your first choice of a bitcoin wallet? on: August 17, 2021, 04:08:36 PM
What is your first choice of a bitcoin wallet?  If its a free wallet thats even better.
It depends if you are using wallet for holding or spending Bitcoin but Open Source, trusted and tested by experts, should be priority when choosing wallet for you.
Mobile and desktop wallets are free but they are mostly hot wallets used for spending coins unless you use them on some airgapped computer.
Hardware wallets are not free but they are better choice for average crypto users.
All wallets listed bellow are Open Source:

Mobile wallets::
Electrum
BlueWallet

Desktop wallets:
Electrum
Wasabi

Hardware wallets::
Trezor
Coldcard
Bitbox
