761  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What Problem Will Namecoin Help Solve Exactly? on: May 04, 2011, 08:22:42 PM
So in a sense... this could be used the entire world over? For all domain names? Not just for bitcoin?

Or is it a bitcoin-centric model?
762  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Article names bitcoin as "standard unit of tracking computational work" - LOL on: May 04, 2011, 08:21:33 PM
I'm not sure they they're actually making reference to bitcoins as we know them.

I think they might actually be referring to a colloquial reference which is used inside the Google community?

Instead of getting paid in cash, they are getting paid in bits in a sense... or bit-cash/bit-coins...

Perhaps our heads have grown too large?
763  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What Problem Will Namecoin Help Solve Exactly? on: May 04, 2011, 08:16:58 PM
Quite interested/surprised by the number of replies to this post here.

Wish I knew more as to why exactly something like Namecoin is needed? Is this in case the governments start cracking down and "confiscating" our domains?

Is there a chance that we will never need to use it?
764  Other / Meta / Re: The Canonical BitCoin Questions on: May 04, 2011, 08:08:40 PM
I would like to see something like "What Are Bitcoins Largest Vulnerabilities - MONTH - YEAR" type questions being posted/answered on a regular basis.

In other words, what should we be working on most furiously at that point in time?

And hello to you, too!

SideNote: We should create a stickied/welcome thread. What do you's think?

767  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PCIe x1 capable of transmitting video or only mining? on: May 03, 2011, 11:24:09 AM
Just bought some copper wire and will be shorting those connections on the x1 cables shortly...

Any connections before I electrocute myself? Should they be insulated wires?
768  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Was the Bitcoin site just DDOS'd? on: May 03, 2011, 11:07:08 AM
Was the Bitcoin site just DDOS'd?

I could not access it (nor mtgox) for a few hours and neither could http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/

Now they are both back online at the same time.

Are they run from the same servers?
769  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Why POCLBM Gives Errors Without -v In Place? on: May 02, 2011, 08:22:29 AM
I was just pulling my hair out for a few minutes because all of my cards were showing the dreaded "verification failed, check hardware" on the command line interface after just a few seconds of mining.

Thank goodness grinder made this post here: http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1334.msg97772#msg97772

I added -v (vectors) to my poclbm variables and it began to generate flawlessly. Going on 20 minutes now with no "verification failed" messages (fingers crossed!).

Can anybody explain to me what exactly "vectors" are? Am I still using the BFI_INT calculations with vectors on? (I am using the latest POCLBM version which I believe calculates BFI_INT now as well?)

With vectors enabled each thread on the GPU runs 2 hashes instead of 1. This improves performance on ATI hardware because it gives the compiler more opportunities to extract ILP (Instruction-level parallelism) compared with only running a single hash.

The latest poclbm always uses BFI_INT on ATI/AMD hardware if cl_amd_media_ops is detected. I am not sure why enabling vectors can "fix" the problem when all it does is run 2 hashes per thread on the GPU instead of 1. This may be a problem with poclbm's BFI_INT patcher, which I haven't looked at in detail yet. I don't think the OpenCL kernel itself is the problem because as m0mchil mentioned it is virtually identical to the OpenCL kernel used in Phoenix now. I have yet to see any users have this problem without vectors on Phoenix though, which is why I suspect the BFI_INT patching code.

That said, vectors should be faster on most ATI hardware anyway, so this shouldn't be a problem for the majority of users.

Thank you for the very detailed response, jedi!

If it is possible to run 2 hashes instead of 1, why not 3 or 100 hashes instead of 1?

I noticed that my first GPU miner seemed to work (without vectors) just until I began running the second GPU miner. Then the first miner shut down and the second one did soon afterwards.
770  Bitcoin / Mining / How To ReStart Frozen GPU? on: May 02, 2011, 08:04:20 AM
So I was toying with my 5970s overclocking ability...

Stock core MHz was 735 I believe. Bumped it up to 800 with no problems. Bumped it to 850 with no problems. Bumped it to 900 and it froze within seconds. Probably should have tried 875. :S

Anyways... is there any solution (besides disconnecting power to the machine) to restart and un-freeze a GPU once it has been frozen?
771  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What Is Your Favorite ATI Overclocking Software In Ubuntu? on: May 02, 2011, 06:33:59 AM
What do you use to tweak your ATI GPU settings in Ubuntu? And why?

It depends on what you're trying to tweak. If you're just looking to overclock then aticonfig will do it.

If you want to go more advanced and tweak voltage and lower clocks then you want AMDOverdriveCtl.

If you're using AMDOverdriveCtl you really need to understand your BIOS limits and voltages being supplied to the card so you don't damage it.

Thanks for that tip, grndzero!

Do you have a link to that AMDOverdriveCtl??? I can't find any reference to it on the net :S
772  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What Is Your Favorite ATI Overclocking Software In Ubuntu? on: May 02, 2011, 06:33:35 AM

$aticonfig --adapter=0 --od-setclocks=770,1126

check out ...

$aticonfig --help

GUI based tools should be treated with caution when you are thrashing the GPUs as hard as you can under linux using a miner

Thanks for that moa!

And the --adapter value is the same as the "d" value for poclbm?

776  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PCIe x1 capable of transmitting video or only mining? on: May 02, 2011, 03:29:24 AM
He is having an issue with his x16 slots unless I am misreading. Are you saying he should jumper his x16 slot using x1 presence detect?

his using x1 risers, even if the slots are x16, if his using a x1 riser it NEEDs to jumper the slot -or the riser-, depends on the mb and/or the video card combination, in some cases you dont need to jumper anything.

BTW... 6x5870, there is a limit on how many VGA cards can be placed on a single MB?

Is there a limit?

I am using ubuntu 10.10... I heard that windows imposed limits but not ubuntu..?
777  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PCIe x1 capable of transmitting video or only mining? on: May 02, 2011, 03:27:58 AM

man you cant do that?Huh

Take 5cm of ANY cable and just put it like the image...

So you are talking about bridging the motherboard, I thought you meant for me to bridge the pcie x1 extension cable originally. And I had not thought of doing it that way. You're right it seems quite simple!

I am not specifically having problems with plugging the x1 extension cables into an x1 slot. I am also having trouble reading cards that are plugged into an x16 slot via an x1 extension cable.

Do I simply have to use the correct size of extension cable? (I mean.. x16 extension cables for an x16 slot?) I am buying some x16 extension cables right now... I thought I could save a buck by buying x1s and making the necessary cuts myself... stupid mistake!

Thanks for your help shivansps!
778  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PCIe x1 capable of transmitting video or only mining? on: May 02, 2011, 03:24:18 AM
with a PCIe x1 extension cables that have been modified by myself to accept x16 sized cards.

1. I assume you did this by cutting the back of the x1 socket.  You should check that you didn't eliminate the connections closest to the cut.

2. Some x16 cards need other leads shorted to work.

3. If you're seeing two of the cards working, I'd mark cards as "known good" and start swapping them through.  If they work in all ports, then it's card related, especially if the other cards don't work in the slots where the working cards are currently seated.

4. You're going to need to titrate this, regardless.  You have a combination of cards and slots, some of which work and most of which don't, and all the cards are different brands that could have their own issues and electrical incompatibilities that could cause everything to go to heck.  Start with your two good cards in any slots in which they work, then start adding cards in a methodical manner until you reach your maximum.

PCIe x1 itself is definitely capable of transmitting video, and you can buy (a few) x1 cards, primarily to go into rackmount servers.  Just set your expectations of video performance accordingly.  Remember that PCIe, even with one lane, is faster than ISA, and we played lots of bad games in VGA and definitely saw Linux/X output.

Thanks for your insight!

I know that all of the cards work since I have tested them all individually. It's just that whenever I plug then into an x1, x8 or x16 slot with an x1 extension cable they fail to be recognized.

I like your idea of trying all of the same brand of cards on one mobo. I have a bunch of 5870s all made by Gigabyte so I will lump them together and get back to you guys here.

Yes it soon becomes problematic when 24x7 mining, as our homes suddenly start to feel and sound like data centers, my closet is sounding liking a small replica of a data centre minus the dedicated AC.

I wonder adversely will the difficulty also decrease as the summer temp increases leaving just those of us who will endure to no end to keep mining leaving the casual miners to switch off.

Don't forget that the southern hemisphere is entering winter as the northern hemisphere is entering summer. That could balance things slightly.

I'd actually be more concerned about the kids in their parents' basements, for whom electricity and cooling are 'free'. Same goes for those running mining operations in their offices.

I doubt those kids will be running their rigs for too long once daddy discovers that his electricity bill has increased by ~$100 a month or more.

I had a friend when I was younger who's father demanded he pay him $1 for every night he forgot to turn off the computer.
780  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PCIe x1 capable of transmitting video or only mining? on: May 02, 2011, 12:02:31 AM
BRIDGE the pci-e slots like in the picture i posted.

Some mbs have troubles detecting videos cards at x1 slots, using a simple cable to bridge 2 pins will fix it.

Sounds like a task easier said then done... There is not a lot of room to work with on an x1 extension cable. Would probably be simpler to purchase x16 cables for $5 each, no?
