7681  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: segwit and address formats on: February 18, 2021, 07:45:01 AM
and what is benefits of using SEGWIT with other  wallet formats ?

I'll make it simple. The benefit for you would be the cost of transactions.

If you make a typical transaction with old type of wallet to old type of wallet, for 10 sat/vbyte you'll pay around 2570 satoshi. (see c71cfdbf267a23f1c512933d11305529f4dd9e036642ff11b4b26c38a25bd0ca)
If you make a typical transaction with segwit compatible wallet to segwit compatible wallet, for 10 sat/vbyte you'll pay around 1660 satoshi. (see 0cdadafb139f58666a146d4627cb2e891db8d93d0ec5321a86d6f4a5cd07338c)
If you make a typical transaction with segwit bech32 wallet to bech32, for 10 sat/vbyte you'll pay around 1410 satoshi. (see 116010d6a51087238ebc8f9e8e33a159ccee7f9fe818ef8aa00314bfd51f51e4)

Perhaps someone can invent a new altcoin which addresses these concerns?   Smiley

Wouldn't be that the most useless altcoin ever?
Just imagine, I'd send coins to the exchange, withdraw Bitcoin then revert the altcoin transaction. It would allow you get anything for free. Do you expect anyone - from exchanges to merchants - would be stupid enough to accept such a coin?!
7683  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin crash is inevitable on: February 17, 2021, 04:13:37 PM
Just like the subject says, the more Bitcoin goes up this bull run, the most correction it will have, people who thinks this will go up without stopping are very naive.
This is not the time to buy, don't be a fool to buy at 50K.

I know somebody who was not a fool and didn't buy in 2017 at 17k and ever since. The price did crash, we had crypto winter, then a recovery and now it's 50k. Guess what, doesn't he feel like a fool now?
Of course, everybody does with own money as he seems fit. Neither you nor me, nor others from the internet should not matter in his decision.
7684  Other / Meta / Re: Upgrade your account on: February 17, 2021, 01:02:46 PM
I want to upgrade my account on the forum that says I transfer 1 wallet to a certain address, but how can I confirm which account has paid fees to upgrade?

If you talk about copper membership then:
1. you are sending funds from your wallet, not the wallet.
2. the recipient address is generated especially for your account, hence some software will know that it was paid for your specific account

Make sure you read again the correct page: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=credit;promote
And you should also read this to understand what you actually get for the money: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2385104
7685  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: A few questions about hardware wallets on: February 17, 2021, 12:38:52 PM
Nobody replied to this part directly so I will. The PIN code is not required to restore the accounts on your Trezor. All the thief would need is your recovery phrase. The PIN code only unlocks that particular hardware device when you want to use it.

All the first answers have covered this. Neither the PIN, nor seed, they are not necessary if the device can be physically accessed, since the seed can be extracted and used in another wallet.
Somebody has written than adding a passphrase fixes this though.

I may buy the Trezor one, but as a hot wallet, not cold. Just for daily transactions with small risks.

I agree, this is the best use of a hardware wallet.
For cold storage you can safely generate with the device a different seed which you can use more or less like paper wallet.
7686  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Tx. Unconfirmed help with webwallet on: February 17, 2021, 11:00:13 AM
Thanks for the snappy response LoyceV!

A couple of questions.
1. I do have surplus btc in the wallet, is it an easy process to do CPFP? Is my blockchain Web wallet capable / can you recommend a rookie guide perhaps? I wouldn't mind getting it confirmed prior to your estimation if it's fairly easy and risk free  Grin

2. You say chances are it'll confirm on Sunday, almost a week from sending point. I'll assume it's your familiarity with current traffic, but what makes you know this?

Side note I'll be checking out the electrum wallet after this pain transaction is sorted.

1. CPFP is pretty much a normal transaction. It only has to use as input the change from the other transaction and has to have an overly high fee (in order to really pay for the parent tx)
So you have to spend all the coins from either 1NqdX6WZvjKefqRitgnbPTAENdxKc6jZsP, either 1DCtysDdF5HvsaQxcmozb4frY1dmsJiEhr, whichever is yours.
Of course, the wallet has to allow you spend unconfirmed coins, I don't know if blockchain.com wallet can do that, Electrum can.

2. Those of us who are watching how busy the mempool usually is, we "see" that. And at some point last year somebody did also document this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5250569.0

My advice is to start taking a look at Electrum now, since maybe you'll take over the current wallet if they provide you the seed.
Just make sure you get Electrum from electrum.org and verify it (https://bitcoinelectrum.com/how-to-verify-your-electrum-download/)
7687  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone bought BTC at $6K yesterday at an exchange and they want it back on: February 17, 2021, 09:38:45 AM
"Bank error in your favor", just it's not Monopoly  Cheesy
Now, I don't know what can the exchange do, the user didn't technically do anything wrong (maybe he did morally, but not technically). And Bitcoin ownership may get interesting in court.
Also the user can start complaining that a private company is misusing his personal data and it's harassing him, at least (although I don't know how this goes in the Philippines).

Anyhow, it will be fun to see how it's going to develop...
7688  Economy / Exchanges / Re: An exchange with sweep feature on: February 17, 2021, 08:14:33 AM
but the amount in this address is not great (even now in these times of peak Bitcoin value!)

I am not convinced that an exchange will do this. Private keys access is a sensitive matter and they can get easily into trouble. But you can look for wallets with in-built exchange, like written in the previous post.
I advise you start with moving your bitcoins into another wallet. It may be not a big amount, but still better safe than sorry. Some wallets may be fake and if you are not used with them you may get fooled easier.

Also, if you don't want to do it yourself, there's at least one user here who offers claiming service for a fee. But if you say that the amount is small, I don't know if it'll worth his time.
However, here it is: LoyceV's Bitcoin Fork claiming guide (and service) for either contacting him, either read for doing it yourself.
7689  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Extra security for a paper wallet on: February 16, 2021, 08:42:21 PM
* HCP has already explained what I meant by extra words
* in the part of using your imagination, sky is the limit, really. For example, something that came now to my mind, but didn't test. You can have a 12 words seed, you can add then a passphrase made of 1 normal bip39 word, then add more random words from the same list until you get to 24 words. The 24 words will look like it's you seed, but it's actually not. Of course, you'll have to remember that you have done this.

7691  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Noification when Bitcoin TX fees reduce on: February 16, 2021, 09:38:44 AM
With APIs you can always have multiple sources to get data from, quite improbable they could go all offline.

APIs are usually not too happy to get accessed (too much) for free.
I had my own share of experience with API cutting me off for no particular reason, and I've accessed it under 1000 times spread over 3-4 months.
Multiple APIs may fix this. But I've learned to use my resources when that's possible.
7692  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Noification when Bitcoin TX fees reduce on: February 16, 2021, 08:15:13 AM
I think that it's also easy to send the mail when a certain fee/vbyte was met (i.e. sent in the last block).

ViaBTC will manage to make a mess of those things with their free inclusions as they might confirm 11sat/b transactions when there are 100M of 30+ sat/b of waiting transactions in the mempool, same for other pools when they send their payout as some have a habit of including their own in the blocks they mine with minimal fees.

You are right. I forgot about accelerators. But I am confident that a good analysis can be done with the mempool at hand (ignore the smallest 150-300 tx fees from a block?), without calling a 3rd party API.
And I said accelerators since if it would be only ViaBTC then this would not be a problem (do you expect ViaBTC mine multiple blocks in a row?)
7693  Local / Altcoins (Monede Alternative) / Re: Salut!

Doar, cum s-a spus, ar trebui mutat in categoria potrivita. (Altcoins).

7694  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Noification when Bitcoin TX fees reduce on: February 16, 2021, 07:14:11 AM
I can send him an email when the mempool is about 10mb

I think that it's also easy to send the mail when a certain fee/vbyte was met (i.e. sent in the last block). Or if a certain fee was met/touched for 3 blocks in a row.
Of course, it's not a guarantee for what's going to be next, still... there are some ideas. Since you already have the software there and the mempool, there are plenty of ways the implementation can be done.
Also, I guess that the recipient should choose if he wants this kind of mail only once or multiple times.

I'm glad that a reputed member does this instead of seeing the feature on a website nobody knows about and may only collect e-mails for further spam.
7695  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Paper wallet QR code reconstruction on: February 15, 2021, 04:18:40 PM
There's a topic here on pretty much the similar problem.

The idea is that the more characters are missing the time (and energy) to brute force it rises exponentially easily getting beyond anything useful ( 3 * 10^13 years if 12 characters are known )
And if you also don't know the correct position of those characters, it gets even more difficult/lengthy.
7696  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: SUSPICIOUS ELECTRUM on: February 15, 2021, 02:22:32 PM
Indeed, it's a phishing/scam/copycat website. My browser or one of its extensions is detecting it as scam.
Normally the site should be also reported into threads like this one ( https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5126880 ), but I see it's unmaintained for years Sad
Maybe somebody else knows of a better maintained of (Electrum) phishing/copycat websites.

The rule is to not search, since SEO can trick now and then search engines into delivering malicious websites. Instead just go to electrum.org

LE: let's include those images for the others to see them (I've also made them a bit smaller)

7697  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BTC wallet sweeper on: February 15, 2021, 11:14:45 AM
Is there a tool that tries to log in to BTC addresses and swipes the coins from and sends them to a specific address?

BTC addresses are not accounts, hence you don't "log in" to them.
If you know the (seed or) private key, any wallet can do the operation you need.

You'd be better if instead of buying account you'd have your own newbie account, read more and also ask in Beginners & Help...
7698  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: A few questions about hardware wallets on: February 15, 2021, 09:51:16 AM
I think I'll buy a trezor one, since I make many transactions daily and I can't open the laptop with electrum every single time I want to transact. I need to just connect a usb with my PC and be able to move bitcoins. Although, I have some questions to make before giving the 59 EUR.

  • What happens if someone steals it? I assume that once you write the 24 words, anyone with the device and its PIN has access to your funds.
  • I know that the firmware is open-source, but how can I verify that? Telling me that a software is open-source means that I can build it and ensure that the program is the binaries of the source code. But on firmware, how exactly can I build it?
  • Is it necessary, for the mnemonic, to be 24 words? Can't it be 12 words? There's no reason to write 24 words, unless you want to brute force it sometime in the future.
  • How's the electrum experience? Is it easy to use it? Is the LN also available?
  • What are the dangers? AFAIK, the hardware wallet signs the transaction and sends it back to the computer, thus the private keys never "touch" your computer. But is there anything I should be afraid of? For example, should I connect my hardware wallet on a publicly shared computer, that is most probably virus/malware infected, or not?

Thank you.

I have Ledger, but I've also read a lot about Trezor and I think that I know some of the answers you need:
  • If somebody steals it you'd better move the funds away asap since physical tampering can allow them steal your funds. It was discussed here on Bitcointalk.
  • I think that I've seen a discussion on this not long ago, but I couldn't find it now
  • the Electrum experience is nice. I recommend it. I use Electrum with my HW and it's not much different from simple (no-HW) use. You do have to plug in the HW at very start and you'll also need it for signing tx, and most of the details of the tx will also be on the HW screen for verification. But the rest is normal use, really, you may almost forget that HW is there.
  • I didn't use LN but as long as you have bech addresses on, I think that LN should be possible (I cannot check now since right now I'm not on bech addresses).
  • You have to be careful and avoid unknown computers. Especially a malicious wallet can still do bad surprises (for example the change address is not displayed on my HW and that could be exploited). I'm not a hacker, but I am sure that this is not the only potential problem. Instead of an unknown computer I prefer (for emergencies) my own phone with Mycelium and the HW on OTG.
7699  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will not reach $50,000 on: February 15, 2021, 08:04:39 AM
Mostly because of this: Grin
~snip~
But yeah, that is the conclusion everyone should know by now,  every number could be the new ATH for the next 2 or 10 years
I have a feeling the 32 to 1$ crash is dying of envy right now.

I didn't expect an answer to the rhetorical question, but we are on the same page, and you've also provided me the first good laugh for this week, and that's what I've actually merited.

Its bloodbath all over the market before touching the $50k after this small correction It will finally reach this level but be very careful from here as for sure a lot of sell pressure will happen and afraid it will be like 2017 that its the final top in this bull market, $50k is imminent and a huge correction -30%-40% after this is also possible so always take profit.

8% for Bitcoin, from which half is already recovered, is far from a bloodbath. 12% for Monero may look like a bloodbath, but it can be seen as a healthy correction after 7 days of continuous growth.
Yes, people take profit now and then, but while it's good to be aware/careful, we don't have to freak out. And maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about, but 30-40% correction is not so much likely (a big correction, maybe, but that big.. hmmm).
7700  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Portfolio allocation on: February 15, 2021, 07:48:45 AM
does this sound ok?

"By the book" you should have at least 50% BTC. You have that. Good.
The riskier the rest of the portfolio is, the more % should be BTC, but LTC and ETH should not be that risky.
Although it's not how my portfolio would (actually does) look like, but as long as you did your homework on which coin has what potential to rise (or not fall), you should be "fine".
(Just a reminder, don't invest more than you afford to lose, else you'll be very stressed when the market will have bad times and you may do stupid moves.)
