7841  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin (BTC) Lightning Network Capacity Has Surged Nearly 2x Over the Last Year on: August 16, 2021, 07:39:18 AM
It will be interesting to see further developments in the Bitcoin Lightning Network as the market progresses. However, widescale adoption will only be possible if it can provide solutions at par with giants like Visa and Mastercard.
The Lightning Network can already offer an excellent solution, one that is even better than those provided by credit cards and banks. Credit cards have a throughput of several ten thousand transactions per second right? Well the Lightning Network can route a million transactions per second, probably even more than that.

When it comes to costs, people think credit cards are cheap. They actually aren't. They are for you (the buyer), but they aren't for the merchant. He has to pay hefty fees, but those costs will be included in the price that you as a buyer pays. Have you ever been in a shop and the merchant asks "cash or credit card?" There is a reason for that. If you pay with cash, you'll pay less compared to what you would pay if you used a credit card. That's because of the fees I mentioned previously.

To route payments over the LN on the other hand, you only pay a few sats + the channel opening and closing on-chain transaction.
7842  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin adoption and increase in crime rate, how correlated are they?. on: August 16, 2021, 07:21:09 AM
Oh how I miss the good old days, way back before 2009 when there was no crime or poverty. People weren't getting kidnapped, killed, and cut into pieces because their family and friends couldn't afford to pay the ransom. There was no drug trafficking because we didn't have Bitcoin back in those ancient times. Cars were never stolen and sold for parts. Break-ins in houses never happened because there was no Bitcoin to steal. Government officials were fair and uncorrupted. They didn't steal and launder money for their criminal friends and partners because there was no blockchain to move that value around.

And one day some scum invented Bitcoin and our world has been in havoc ever since. Oh, wait! But all those things existed and were committed even before Bitcoin. That must mean that this new technology isn't responsible for the doings of men, and some people are just scum no matter the era they live in or the system they use to get paid.

On a more serious note.
When you hate something, like the government hates Bitcoin, you take advantage of the increased adoption to turn it into something ugly. Bitcoin and all crypto leave a digital trail when used, which makes them less effective than cash, but much better than using banks, credit cards, and various other fiat payment processors. That and there constantly rising valuation is what makes them attractive to common people and criminals alike.
7843  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [Error] Invalid Distance Code on: August 15, 2021, 04:57:05 PM
Or this is an installer that you downloaded from an old PC and you are trying to install it to your new PC?
If this is an Electrum installer standalone that you downloaded from an old PC before then maybe the installer is corrupted.
Electrum offers three different versions for their apps:

  • A portable app
  • An installer for Windows
  • A standalone app

The portable is self-explanatory. The Windows installer has to be installed on the computer before it can be used. The standalone file doesn't require any installation. You just double-click on it and it runs. But it's still gonna look for wallet files in the standard Electrum location. That's probably what caused OPs  errors.
7844  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: making fake HW wallets(will we see this scam next)?? on: August 15, 2021, 04:36:45 PM
If there is, that's a noob or innocent one that is new to the crypto world or considerable as a lazy one because it doesn't even have their own research regarding the no-brand wallet use.
Those are exactly the victims that scammers target. What you explained is not different from any other scheme that is created for newbies, those who are greedy, careless, and don't take the required amount of time to consider the consequences of their actions.

Let say if they(scammer) modify the HW wallets and you bought it from the unofficial distributor store, I think the reset button is enough in the first place to secure your wallet and the hacker has nothing to do because it will generate another seed phrase and address.
It wouldn't be enough if someone managed to create what I explained in my previous post in this thread. Besides, the scammers could use the leaked Shopify/Ledger databases to send out their fake products. We have already seen something like that not so long ago.

I just checked and I have 0 out of 7 as I filled in the predictions for round 2 instead of round 1 lol. Good thing is that I now have more time to do some more research.
I hate to break it to you, but you won't be able to edit your predictions. They changed the rule of the competition for this season and once submitted, no more changes are permitted.

Here is the part of the Majestic 7 T&C where this is mentioned:
Quote
Once the prediction is submitted in the Majestic 7, it cannot be edited or altered in any way.
https://fortunejack.com/majestic7

I liked the old rules better. It gave me a chance to see which players feature from the start. That increases the probability of predicting correctly. I guess FortuneJack found out about that as well.
7846  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: making fake HW wallets(will we see this scam next)?? on: August 15, 2021, 08:42:15 AM
If I understand the OP correctly, he is asking if it would be possible to create a wallet that always displays one or more receiving addresses of the hacker independent of what seed + seed extension the victim is using. The software of such a device would have no role at all, and would work as a regular hardware wallet where you are shown a seed to write down. But no matter what seed or passphrase you use, the device ends up displaying the same receiving addresses that ultimately leads to the victim making transactions to addresses that belong to the hacker. Is that it?

I don't think this is impossible.
7847  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [LIST] Open Source Hardware Wallets on: August 15, 2021, 08:29:13 AM
Is there any page with instructions for dummies for making Satochip DIY wallet and loading code on card?
I think what you are looking for can be found on this page. Scroll down to the bottom where they talk about creating your own Satochip hardware wallet. They posted links to the required chips, the files that you need to upload on the chip card, and how to download and configure the various Satochip clients.
7848  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Does any wallet software use the heuristic of adding a dust UTXO in each TX? on: August 15, 2021, 08:15:58 AM
UTXO A: 0.0010 BTC
UTXO B: 0.0011 BTC
UTXO C: 0.0012 BTC

If you want to send 0.001196 BTC (the fee is included), your wallet will probably use the UTXO C. This will cause your transaction to have a dust change.
OP is proposing an algorithm in which the wallet uses UTXOs A and B instead of UTXO C.
That's where coin control features come in. If you don't want the change to be below the dust limit, use other inputs manually and learn how to do it. I wouldn't want to use a wallet that selects two or more inputs in order to avoid dust change, creating a bigger transaction with more fees, instead of just one input. But I do want to have the option to do that if that pleases me and coin control allows exactly that.

7851  Other / Meta / Re: Is Bitcointalk.org losing user base? on: August 15, 2021, 07:26:46 AM
2. The law of saturation: If a user keeps receiving merits without giving out, there should be a limit to which he/she will no longer recieve merits unless he begins to give out. If this law is applied by Theymos, the talk of merit hoarding will be a past.
I don't believe theymos will make any significant changes to the merit system. Limiting someone on how much they can receive would be a drastic measure in my opinion. Instead, the community can do their part just like they do with scammers or account sellers. There are no rules that forces users to award posts with merits, but there are also no rules to selling Bitcointalk accounts or scamming someone and we know what happens with those people and their accounts if they are discovered. The sanction for those who don't send sMerits could be simple. You aren't going to get any because it's a waste of sMerits giving it to you when all you do is keep them for yourself.

You know humans are good at predicting the unpredictable. Maybe the hoarder might be thinking that in the future, the merits might not be what it is today, maybe it can turn to something like a token that will have monetary value, hence the essence of hoarding  Grin Grin Grin
That's just another reason not to award them with more if you ask me.
7852  Other / Meta / Re: Do You Believe a New Forum Software Will Attract More Users to Bitcointalk? on: August 15, 2021, 07:14:41 AM
Or another German Forum for cryptocurrencies, called Coinforum. It was established in 2012 and has now much more discussion than our German local board. Their software has always been more updated and a much better design; most new German members are signing up there instead of German Bitcointalk because design matters.
I wanted to check this, so I did a Google search using a few keywords to see which of the two forums are ranked better in the search results.

This is what I found:

1. When you search "german crypto forum", the German local of Bitcointalk will be the 1st result, an Ethereum forum will be 2nd, and CoinForum is 3rd.
2. When you search "german bitcoin forum", again the German local of Bitcointalk is 1st and CoinForum is 2nd.

It's a bit different if you search with German keywords:

1. A search with "deutsche crypto forum" places CoinForum on top and the German local of Bitcointalk on the 2nd place.
2. You get the same results searching for "deutsche bitcoin forum".

What that shows is that both forums are easily found, but if Germans prefer CoinForum instead of Bitcointalk, the correct question we need to ask ourselves is why and how can it be corrected?
7853  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Wallets that don't require identity verification on: August 14, 2021, 10:52:35 AM
Go for the defi wallets like Coin9 and Coinmama.
Since when is Coinmama a DeFi type of wallet?

And besides, Coinmama does require verification before you can use their services. But they have 2 levels of verification. With Level 1, you can buy and sell crypto. They have an upper limit of $15.000. To increase that, you need a Level 2 verified account.

Read more about it here > https://www.coinmama.com/blog/how-to-get-verified-for-coinmama-level-2/.
7854  Economy / Gambling / Re: Roobet.com | Crypto’s Fastest Growing Casino 🦘 on: August 14, 2021, 10:42:06 AM
By the way, I was surprised to see that there are some casinos that provide free withdrawals, meaning there are no transaction fees at all. I wonder how they manage this.
They probably have such an extensive user base of players who have been with them for years that they can afford to pay the transaction fees instead of their customers because they are earning so much already. It's a gamble, but one they are willing to take. If one day they noticed a huge outflow of players and gaming activity on their sites, I am sure they would introduce withdrawal fees as well. It wouldn't be good for business continuing with their practices and generating losses.
7855  Economy / Gambling / Re: [Table] Withdrawal Fees and Withdrawal Amounts on Crypto Casinos on: August 14, 2021, 08:39:12 AM
In my opinion, all casinos that charge additional withdrawal fees on top of the standard network transaction fee are just typical scammers.
Many casinos (just like cryptocurrency exchanges) will force you to overpay on the withdrawal fees, but they are not going to tell you what is used for the mining fees and what is their own profit.

You can put them in three categories basically:

  • Free withdrawals with no fees at all.
  • Dynamic fees that change according to network conditions.
  • Fixed fees that are usually way to high and are only occasionally changed by the site owners.

7856  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Offline Transaction vs hardware wallet, which is safest? on: August 14, 2021, 08:26:37 AM
Hardware wallets are designed to be easy to use and safe. You won't make a mistake using a hardware wallet. You will be fine.
But OP should still be careful. A hardware wallet won't warn you when you are about to make a serious mistake like sending funds to the wrong address, if you have a clipboard malware, if you are overpaying on the network fees, or making a mistake on the amounts being transacted. Doublecheck and then triplecheck if you are not sure.

this is, in my opinion, the most proven method and the safest than all the others.
I am a hardware wallet user myself, but I wouldn't claim that a hardware wallet is safer or provides a higher level of security than a properly configured airgapped computer. it's certainly easier to use and more user-friendly.

Hardware wallet is secure and easy too use, but has some vulnerability and database hack.
The database hack doesn't affect the security of your funds and private keys. It affects the privacy of those whose data got leaked though. In terms of vulnerabilities, what exactly do you mean? Trezor has an unfixable problem that could result in your seed being extracted. But that can be mitigated with a strong passphrase or a unique code saved on a SD card. Ledger has certain closed-source elements in its code related to the Secure Element. Although an issue, I wouldn't call it a vulnerability.

I think you could have mentioned the giveaway in your last post.

For those who haven't read their last Medium article, they are hosting a giveaway where 20 random people have the chance to win AirGap metal plates for recovery phrases including electronic engraving pens. To participate, you need to create a video or article about AirGap. Check the article for more information.

7858  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: How can tainted coins becomes hard to be recognized by centralized services on: August 14, 2021, 07:43:50 AM
I can think of many cases where the transaction ends up having an unreasonably high fee, the most common one is probably day traders wanting to get their coins to exchanges as fast as possible and try to be ahead of any possible fee spike. Another common one is those using a broken fee estimation mechanism or a third party fee estimator that is malicious and is suggesting them absurdly higher fees.
There are also withdrawals from centralized exchanges and gambling platforms which always overpay and target quick confirmations. People tend to overpay the mining fees if they are using crypto to purchase goods or services and they have to pay a fixed coin amount within 10-15 minutes, otherwise the total sums will change.
7859  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Are there any wallets like the Exodus wallet that allow staking crypto? on: August 14, 2021, 07:34:45 AM
Ledger also introduced Ethereum staking through their partner service Lido. I saw the notification yesterday when I accessed my Ledger Live.
https://www.ledger.com/blog/lido-available-in-ledger-live-bringing-ethereum-staking-within-your-reach

I haven't looked at the TOS, but the article mentions that you can stake any amount of ETH 2.0. You don't need 32 ETH unless you want to become a full network validator.
7860  Economy / Gambling / Re: [Table] Withdrawal Fees and Withdrawal Amounts on Crypto Casinos on: August 14, 2021, 07:09:17 AM
If bitcoin goes up a lot, would the fees also go up?
If the dollar value of bitcoin goes up, the fees (in terms of satoshis) wouldn't increase. They would either stay the same or the devs would decrease the minimum withdrawal requirements and you would spend less sats. The only difference is that those sats are now worth more than what they were in the past.

Your mistake is thinking in dollar amounts and converting the values to $. If the withdrawal fee of a casino is 0.0002 BTC and bitcoin goes up by 50%, but the fee still remains 0.0002 BTC, the fee hasn't increased. It has stayed the same. It's up to the casino operators to even out the changes.
