7981  Economy / Economics / Re: Are we at the point where we HAVE to pay tx fee? on: May 05, 2011, 06:47:15 PM
Thanks Garrett.

So increases in the difficulty level also increases the amount of time it takes to compute a block?  Why don't we compute blocks as quickly as possible, then use a lottery system to award the 50 BTC "prize" to the first hasher of a random block in a 10 minute time period?  Seems like we're just wasting computing power that could be put to better use...

Unless the goal is to artificially limit the number of transactions that can take place in 10 minutes, to force people to eventually pay transaction fees.

But if that's the goal, what happens when adoption of bitcoins is 100x what it is at now?  If there can still only be X # of transactions per block, and the difficulty adjusts itself to where only one block is computed every 10 minutes, how in the world will the system be able to handle an increase in usage?  Transaction fees would have to increase to the point of fewer people wanting to use the system, which would be the opposite of what we all want, right?

The point is for a block to "equal" ~10 minutes of computing time at a power equal to the size of the network. If blocks were found more quickly, an attacker could generate more blocks quickly, but they would represent the same amount of computer power. Additionally, network propagation must be taken into account. I think 10 minutes was chosen in part because it's more time than is necessary for a message to propagate to the entire network. This helps prevent constant forking of the block chain.
I understand that, but what happens when we have, say, 2000 transaction requests every 10 minutes, but the system can only process 1000 transactions every 10 minutes because of the block limitations?  And say that that number of transaction requests is consistent for a week straight. Then you have tens of thousands of transactions backlogged, that may never be processed.

Am I wrong?
7982  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: POLL: How many bitcoins do you CURRENTLY have? on: May 05, 2011, 06:36:47 PM
It's possible... I didn't find anything though.

Besides, it never hurts to have an updated poll that all us newbies can participate in as well.  Smiley

Ah, should have searched first. It looks like the B with a vertical line is already taken, too.

I don't understand... are transactions really increasing faster than the GPU power available?  It seems like 1THash would be enough to keep up with all the transactions you ever wanted to make... but I guess I just don't know enough about it all.

How many MH/s of computational power does a single transaction take to complete?
7987  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Any talk of a currency symbol? on: May 05, 2011, 06:21:23 PM
I'm thinking a B with a line through the middle vertically.

Either that, or a backwards F with the middle line crossing both sides of the staff.
7988  Other / Meta / Re: Reputation on: May 05, 2011, 06:11:50 PM
As far as I can tell, the Forum Admins (sirius, theymos, and gavinandresen) have yet to post official guidelines on using the Reputation system. Please provide a link if I'm mistaken!

In my opinion, reputation should be based solely on quality posts vs. non-quality posts.

A quality post should possess some of the following attributes:
  • contributes to discussion
  • on-topic
  • well-organized
  • thoughtful
  • interesting

Non-quality posts could be described as one or more of the following:
  • troll
  • flamebait
  • off-topic
  • illegible -- hurts my brain to read it

Basically, we should be striving for a higher signal-to-noise ratio. I've seen a lot of threads get derailed by off-topic conversations and emotional disagreements where the same points just get repeated over and over by a small handful of users. It's time-consuming to read through and puts a damper on meaningful discussion. If users were aware that they might lose points, they might think about starting a new thread or requesting a moderator to split them from the original thread.

It would also be great to provide a comment for a +1 or -1. If someone bothered to embed a URL to an article they mention in a post, you should be able to say, "thanks for the link to X -- good read!". When people know their effort is appreciated, they'll keep putting in that effort.

I think this could really improve the quality of discussion on these forums, but we'll need the admins to officially define guidelines for using reputation. Otherwise it will be meaningless.
You have to be careful though, because it's also an excellent way to discourage people from posting on forums in the first place... especially if you try to define what exactly a + or - should be given for.  People will try to start "policing" the forums - "He was flamebaiting!!!!11!!!!11", and posters will be afraid to post for fear of receiving said negative feedback.  If you leave the +/- undefined, then it will fall back to a person's common sense, which will generally give much better and more accurate results as to the actual helpfulness or hindrance of a person.

It would also be a headache for the moderators if they were to lay out guidelines.  People would start complaining... "He gave me a minus for flamebaiting, but that's not what I was doing!", and it would just give them one more thing on their plates to worry about.

Just leave it arbitrary.  If someone likes a person (which generally happens BECAUSE of them being helpful), or reads something helpful/funny/otherwise worth a +, then they'll give it to them.  If someone's being truly obnoxious, they'll get a few -.  There's no need to put a bunch of rules or guidelines around it.  Those who deserve it will get it, those who do not will not.
7989  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin thread on OCN, 27 pages in 12 hours on: May 05, 2011, 05:01:46 PM
hey guys... can you guys help me set it up pls??

Ninja-OCNer... probably for good reason.  I wouldn't want to get on this crowd's bad side.  They're all leagues smarter than I am.  Tongue

Clearly not all of them.
I suppose my wording was a bit ambiguous.  What I meant was, I wouldn't want to get on the Bitcoin crowd's bad side.  And the Bitcoin crowd is all leagues smarter than I am.
7990  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: to OC or not to OC? on: May 05, 2011, 04:58:34 PM
You could always use my "quick n dirty" method.

Start guiminer (because it's easy to make it stop/start)
Overclock +10%, immediately.
Overclock in 25mhz intervals afterward
Once computer locks up, restart
Reduce overclock to 25mhz below the point of locking up.
Start guiminer, and keep an eye on it for stability.  If it crashes, reduce overclock another 25mhz.

Took me all of about 5 minutes to overclock my 5850 and 5770 in this manner.  They've been stable and mining away for the past 10 hours, no problems so far...

Much easier, faster, and less obnoxious than the "+5mhz, wait 15 minutes, +5mhz, wait 15 minutes" methods.  I really don't get why people do that...  If you need to eek out that last 10mhz of performance, then at least get a generic idea of the mhz range you need to fine-tune your overclock in first.
7991  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone know what happened to knightmb and his 371,000 BTC? on: May 05, 2011, 04:45:47 PM
Good news for me anyway  Tongue , they sold me the project for $5k to recover some of their cost. I now technically own the wallet files and other software I was working on with them at the time. For legal reasons I can't blurt out who the investors were or the banks, companies, etc. they were representing basically (unless I won't to land in court forever), but I think I made a wise investment. It's still going to take a while to get my wife on board as she still doesn't understand the whole BTC concept, but everyone here knows and I know what it means. She was really skeptical about my purchase this week.

I'll probably take some of the backup advise here too, why have a few backup copies when you can have many on different media types spread around everywhere (all encrypted of course this time).

Thanks for the advise everyone!

7992  Economy / Economics / Re: If all of the world's paper currency was replaced... on: May 05, 2011, 07:53:39 AM

But if they are changing rapidly in value, U$D is down 10% yoy to gold for last 10 years ... and that will likely be accelerating in the near future as the money printed the last 3 years blows the system apart, then why keep using a useless measuring stick?
Because everyone knows TODAY what USD will buy TODAY.  It's understandable, changing as it may be.  No one knows what 683 ounces of gold will buy.  Everyone knows what $1M will buy.  Whether $1M will buy the same amount of stuff a year from now is not relevant to the discussion, because we are talking about purchasing power TODAY, not a year from now.

I think I'm probably out of luck on this one, unfortunately.  Sad
7994  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Does anyone mine on Server 2008? on: May 05, 2011, 07:21:23 AM
I have a box running Server 2008.  It's an i7 with three PCIe x16 slots, and I'd like to take advantage of at least one of those!  Problem is, I installed the 5850, only barely got it running by pointing the Windows installer to the driver, and the Stream SDK doesn't recognize an Open CL compatible video card in the system!  Argh!

Any tips?  I notice that AMD doesn't have official support for Server 2008, but if any of you have gotten it working, well, it'd be awesome to know how.  Don't suggest switching from Server 2008 either, because I can't.  I use the box for a gameserver as well, and I can't take it down for a long enough period to reinstall the OS and the server files, etc.  I'll just build a new computer if it comes down to that.
7995  Economy / Economics / Re: If all of the world's paper currency was replaced... on: May 05, 2011, 06:29:13 AM
After all, who knows what sort of purchasing power 6830 ounces of gold has, off the top of their heads?  Not many of us, that's for sure.  On the other hand, if someone says the have $10.3M, everyone knows exactly the sort of purchasing power it has right now.

If gold or bitcoins become the next international reserve currency, you will likely know roughly how much purchasing power 6830 ounces of gold or 6830 bitcoins would have.  Because you would be conditioned to think of value in reference to gold or bitcoins, as you have be conditioned to think of value in reference to the national fiat currencies.
But that's exactly my point.

When we're having these discussions, we should reference currencies that are most commonly known with regards to valuation.
7996  Other / Meta / Re: [applaud]/[smite] system? on: May 04, 2011, 11:48:00 PM
I think you should upgrade to Xenforo.  Smiley

I do like the advanced system though.  OCN uses it, and it works very nicely.
7997  Economy / Economics / Re: If all of the world's paper currency was replaced... on: May 04, 2011, 11:43:52 PM

Well, using US dollars to compare is always going to problematic because it is going to hell in a basket and is inflating way too fast to measure anything sensible against it.

How about you use gold grams (or ounces) since it will still be around when bitcoin matures and won't have inflated much by then.

Imagine Jimmy Rogers 95 yo and still going, crustily popping up on financial TV clip ;

"Ah, today I like the hard monies, gold, I'm buying gold, I'm buying bitcoins, I like bitcoins, also I'm buying silver .... , the hard monies are going to be the place to be in for the next little while, we all remember what became of the dollar in 2012 ..."
The dollar?  Inflating?  Right now?  Lol.   Roll Eyes

Using US dollars, in terms of purchasing price TODAY, it really doesn't matter what inflation does to it tomorrow.  And for the purpose of discussion, it's a lot easier to maintain a grasp on the numbers if it is in USD.  After all, who knows what sort of purchasing power 6830 ounces of gold has, off the top of their heads?  Not many of us, that's for sure.  On the other hand, if someone says the have $10.3M, everyone knows exactly the sort of purchasing power it has right now.

What is your stance on things like:

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade

Products or services illegal in US or Japan are not fit to be listed here - such links will be removed immediately. Any attempt to get those links up again will result in the account being blocked.

Would it be acceptable to cease using bitcoin.it wiki due to controlled censorship and to instead make use of your wiki and not fear your control and censorship capabilities?
The problem is, the government can shut down your website if you don't comply with their laws.  I suppose you could always just wait for a cease and desist letter, or wait until your website is randomly offline one day, but in the end, it's usually better to just comply right from the start.

SgtSpike's Written Works Editing Service

Writing a paper for school?  Drafting a resume or cover letter for a job?  Need some help with spelling, grammar, or sentence-structure details?  I am here to help!

I will edit your paper, letter, document, or other written works for 2 BTC per 12pt, double-spaced page (with 1" margins)!

I consider myself to be an excellent editor.  I routinely catch writing mistakes that others fail to catch, even in professional publications.  I catch the common mistakes in wording (effect/affect, except/accept, their/there/they're, etc), misuse (or lack of use) of commas and other punctuation, grammatical errors, logic structure, and proper whitespace usage.  I often will suggest rewording sentences to make them more clear to the reader, or to better drive home the point of the document to the reader.

I will edit anything, though I am especially suited for editing business or professional writing.

An example of editing that I performed for another person is quoted below.  It was a Personal Statement as part of a college application.  Note that these are edits I made after another person had already suggested their own edits, so I played off of that.  My edits are in red.  Typically, I like to use "Track Changes" and comments in Microsoft Word to show potential fixes, but I can make notes however you prefer.

See the original "already edited" version in the second quote below.

You may consider adding an opening statement here that would say something about why or how you came to choose the things you chose to talk about in this paper. It just starts, seemingly abruptly. - Agreed.

There is a place in Lake Forest Park called the sand pit. It is essentially an abandoned quarry filled with sand, a forgotten place where my friends and I would hang out a lot and play games like "Ghost in the Graveyard" or "Capture the Flag". Along the quarry wall are some fairly tall cliffs where the erosion creates twenty or thirty foot drops onto sand piles. We decided to jump off of them and see how high any of us dared to go. Of course, one kid wanted to go off the 20+ foot cliff and dared everyone to jump off after him. I was more reluctant. It was really high and I had never been one to do dumb or dangerous things for no reason. But after everyone had jumped down, they all dared me to jump and made fun of how fearful I was. I ended up jumping - not because I wanted to, for intrinsic reasons, but because I wanted to fit in and be one of the guys. Of course, knowing me [I don't know you, so explain], I landed on a flat area and wasn’t able to roll down like everyone else. I ended up breaking my right foot, receiving a les franc fracture (a rare and hard to heal injury). This is a perfect example of what following the pack did for me. [What did it do for you, exactly?] - Agreed, need something more to explain.

I was out of commission for over 10 weeks, unable to walk for most of the summer and much of the first month of school. From that time on, I stopped trying to please my peers and did the things that I really enjoyed, not the things that would make them laugh. I found that I had real friends who actually cared about me and I enjoyed being myself, not the person others wanted me to be.

As I moved up grade levels, there was a particular event from my freshman year of Highschool that stands out. A classmate reached out to me, and we soon became friends. He made me re-evaluate my beliefs and question how I spoke, dressed, and acted on a day to day basis. Then one day, he told me he was gay. There is nothing wrong with that. What was wrong, was how I had consciously slurred him and many other people like him in public. I said things like “that’s so gay” and “what a fag”. Despite that, he be-friended me, and is still one of my best friends to this day. After he came out to me, I realized how much my words must have hurt him and made a decision never to use those slurs again.

This mindset [what mindset?] was really evident in high school, especially during my senior year. Drugs are more available and prevalent than ever. Many highschoolers are pressured into using them, but I’ve managed to stay drug free. Saying no is not easy, because there are many people who use drugs, and it is socially acceptable to smoke marijuana. I have seen many kids get into harder substances, and this inspired me to volunteer at S.A.M.A. (Science And Management of Addictions).

Need some sort of a conclusion... what is the question you are responding to? Also, colleges LOVE people who put their name in the paper - tell them why they would be proud to have you as a student there!

Pay close attention for added commas - there were many that needed to be added in. Just a note - in professional writing, you want to avoid using contractions (don't, I've, where'd, etc) as much as possible. Also, I noticed you use "a lot" a lot, which is a big no-no in writing. Just a couple things to keep in mind for the future.

8000  Economy / Economics / Re: If all of the world's paper currency was replaced... on: May 04, 2011, 09:47:03 PM
I don't like this estimation. It does not tell you anything and therefore has no meaning, if such situation is impossible. If Bitcoin replaced all cash, there wouldn't be much sense in using these currencies in any other form. I think better way of estimating how much Bitcoin would be worth if it replaced traditional money is to think how many people would use it and how much they would need over a certain period of time(interval between paychecks lets say). Whatever value you get, then you can increase it with respect to how much people would like to have and are able to obtain/hoard.
If bitcoin indeed replaced traditional money, it would be worth a lot more
So we'd be buying bananas with peta-bitcoins?  Cheesy

I do agree though, it's not a very useful number.  It would be a lot more useful to know the total currency held in the world.  Although, last I checked, the net worth of the world was negative, so how does that work?   Huh
