Grin

87  Local / Идеи / Re: Идеальный мессенджер on: October 26, 2017, 02:25:49 AM

90  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / MtGox keeping passwords in the clear? on: June 20, 2011, 03:19:56 PM
Not surprised at all if it is the case. Just look at their javascript and you know that this was hacked together rather quickly... Below an email that I have received over the weekend, obviously because I have an account at MtGox and it was compromised

----

Dear Sir or Madam,

A few hours ago the Bitcoin trading website Mt Gox has been hacked.
Malicious individuals have been able to obtain a database containing
usernames, email address and encrypted passwords. This information has been
posted publicly on the internet.

As a Bitcoin supporter I'm now sending a message to every email address
contained in the hacked database. This is to warn you that your username,
email address and password have been leaked. I therefore strongly advice you
to change your passwords. If you have used the same password on different
websites it's highly recommended to change your password on all of your
accounts!

For a more secure alternative to Mt Gox, the community appears to be moving
to TradeHill. So this is no reason to lose faith in Bitcoin itself. It must
be seen as a warning that not every website can be trusted with your data
however! Their link is http://www.tradehill.com/?r=TH-R15683 (Note: You can
remove the Referral Code when registering if you want!) This is certainly
not the only website where you can exchange Bitcoins, also check out
http://www.thebitcoinlist.com/dp_bitcoin/bitcoin-exchange/

Sincerely,

A Bitcoin supporter

91  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ideas for increasing exchange security on: June 16, 2011, 07:56:08 PM
Joe's ideas are good and there are many more to be implemented. Bottom line unless an outside authority can certify that a website follows secure programming practices then you are left with trusting the operator alone. Now this worked in the fall on 2010 when Bitcoin was a small community, but you can't expect to sustain the current flow of new interested users/providers without providing a trust central. Of course this goes against the decentralized concept, but let's be honest, people will get scammed if we don't do something. And if people get scammed that's what will transpire in the media. Today's BTC millionaires should step up and fund a central trust authority, if they don't do it no one else will. Oh and did we mention that Satoshi or whatever-his-name-is owns 10%+ of all bitcoins in circulation? He could finance this with his eyes closed, if he truly exists that is.
92  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ideas for increasing exchange security on: June 16, 2011, 04:35:54 PM

Thoughts and other ideas?

Two concepts, "BTC secure" certification and operator identity verification.

This is unavoidable, and as soon as an exchange with both will appear they will become the de facto standard. Same goes for the online wallet concept as these are undoubtedly related. Currently everyone is semi-hiding in the trenches, why would you deposit $5K or same worth in BTC with MTGox - for God's sake they don't even have a mailing address on their website!!!!

93  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Too late to start mining? on: June 15, 2011, 02:36:45 PM

The factor of new people mining as a hobby would drop as the coin reward drops unless the value per coin were to rise exponentially. It would seem that the difficulty would have to fluctuate wildly to compensate for computing power gains and losses which would also lead to constant market corrections and volatility . That being said it would very difficult to determine profitability over time.

I think that it's all about the float. By the time we reach block 210,000 there will be 10.5M BTC in circulation. Wheter 150 new BTC get mined per hour (25BTC/block) versus the current 300BTCph will probably not amount to such a big deal. Don't forget that currently MtGox averages 30K+ BTC/day in volume. The volume will likely be much higher if Bitcoin survives to see block 210,000 Smiley

Also hardware will be more powerful, cheaper and less expensive to operate in the future. Someone will always have access to powerful machines and figure out a way how to make some $$$ with them - as long as they're mining for the network, not trying to overpower it.

Bonne chance.
95  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the single biggest problem facing Bitcoins at this moment? on: June 15, 2011, 09:19:10 AM

Since currently the wallet is not encrypted, if someone steals a computer or if a hacker gets access to a machine; they can copy the wallet, then spend the wallet immediately.  Encrypting the wallet is a step in the right direction, and it gives you protection against theft of the computer and a hacker who has only has intermittent access to the computer.  However, even that is not enough because if a hacker gets continuous read access to your computer they can wait until you decrypt your wallet to run bitcoin and copy the wallet at that moment.

In my opinion, having bitcoin read and write to an encrypted wallet is the single biggest improvement that could be made at this time.  Even reading and writing to an encrypted wallet would not stop a hacker who has continuous read access and a keylogger, however it would protect from theft and from a hacker who only has file read access.

++

Security is always about building several perimeters of defense. Of course the encryption of wallet.dat does not solve all problems, but it does add one level of difficulty for the attacker. People do not usually create passwordless GPG keys, why would one do differently when currency is involved? Also having separate encryption keys for different accounts in your wallet would be another way to even further complicate an attacker's job. The bitcoin client definitely needs some of these features badly.

As for the main post, I vote #1 and #2 to start with..

I understand that you administrators want to protect your 50K+ BTC pots, but restricting newcomers from expressing themselves on the main threads is a weird approach. There are 10x to 1000x more of us than there are of you, and we are the ones paying for your profits. Why are you doing this? I have been visiting this board for well over a month and I still only have 2 hours on my log. A new board is in order I think. Suggestions?

The blocks will still be created, there just won't be any block generation awards (currently 50BTC, but this gets divided by 2 every 210,000 blocks). Once all 21M BTCs are "created" miners will only get compensated with transaction fees.
