81  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Questions about BitmainAntminer.com on: July 28, 2014, 02:16:19 PM
I ordered an S3 from them as well.  I'll keep you posted on my progress.  My order should be shipping by the 1st as well so I'll keep you all posted.  Since I paid through Paypal, I'll be keeping a close eye on the 45 day dispute period.  If it's not in my hands and functioning by that mark I'll run it through Paypal's complaint dept to keep my money back.

All of this talk about luck and changing pools is stupid.  Its like switching slot machines at a casino when yours isn't paying.  You can never know if you're 1 hash away from solving a block or 5 billion so trying to "figure it out" is dumb.  I understand that some people have very internal loci of control and they think that they can change their luck if the pool is having a slow few days but you can't. Not "but what if I...?".  YOU. CAN'T.

Bitminter is - by far - the best pool around.  Yes, the GUI is nice, lots of good hardware is supported and the donations are more than reasonable but the real benefit to this pool is the Doc.  Where else is the owner / manager of the pool this accessible?  The guy responds to just about every question (even dumb ones about luck) and provides thorough and thoughtful answers and comments.

The marketing of the pool isn't the issue the problem is the first mover advantage of the other pools.  They've been around a little longer so every how-to and bitcoin mining tutorial that was written early on in the days of mining instructs people on how to access those pools.  Most people stick with the pools they started with and find all other pools to be inferior.

Use a different browser.  That should fix your getting to them consistently problem.

I use these settings and they work great

Pool 1       stratum+tcp://mint.bitminter.com:3333
Pool1 Worker     Username_workername
Pool1 Password        x

Pool 2                         mint.bitminter.com

User and password are the same.

I also use google as my DNS server.

I'll give it a try with the Stratum pool address and the underscore between my user name and worker but I don't know if a different browser will help me with the login issue.  I've tried it with Chrome and Internet Explorer and still no luck.  Any other advice on that front?

And what do you mean by using Google as your DNS server?

Hey Doc or someone else who knows,
I just picked up a couple S1's and I'm trying to get them up and running.  I tried looking through the forums for instructions but there is too much to look through.  What is the pool address that I should use?  Is it mint.bitminter.com:3333 or stratum+tcp://mint.bitminter.com:3333  ?  I also read somewhere that the worker name should be my user name then my worker name with an underscore instead of a period.  Can you confirm that this is the way I should enter it in my S1?

Finally, I'm having a ton of trouble getting to the miner by using the IP address in my browser.  Sometimes I get into it with problem and more often it searches the internet for that address instead of getting me in.  Its been very very frustrating not being able to get into the miner's interface regularly.

Also, any information that can help me with settings, specifically as they relate to this pool, etc... would be much appreciated.  General set up instructions are everywhere but I think making sure that my ducks are in a line with the pool-specifics is my issue.

I'm still failing to see the benefit to the attacker?  Other than them making money on bad equipment that wouldn't otherwise make any money.  Even if the solved blocks aren't being counted, they are still paying for the power.

Also, I think everyone is jumping off of Ghash because they almost hit the fabled 51% mark and no one wants to have hashing power that consolidated.  See article below.

86  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain AntMiner S1 Setup on: June 17, 2014, 02:32:39 PM
I just picked up a couple S1's and I'm excited to get them up and running.  Having read a ton of threads to prep myself for setup and success I have a few questions.

One - Has anyone used any additional heatsinks on the outside?  I see kits for sale but have no idea if they are worth it.

Two - Can anyone point out a good but relatively cheap wifi antenna?  I don't know the same of the connection on the S1 so I'm not sure what to look for.

Three - Has anyone tried mounting these pointing up.  i.e. with the fan on the bottom?  There looks to be enough frame on the units to do this and since the heat is rising anyway I would think you'd get a little more heat dissipation from the fan versus the normal horizontal setup.

Four - I'm planning to try to run both S1's off on one power source (link below). It seems like it'll be on the line of working if I have both units overclocked.  I have older BFL units that I can steal another power supply (Corsair not the junk BFL's come with) from if I need to.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A0HZMKG/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Five - There seem to be pretty mixed responses to this throughout the inter-web but can I run one S1 (both blades) from one power cable that splits into two PCI-e connectors?  It seems like the gauge of the wire should be able to handle it.  Let me know if you run yours this way.

Answers to any or all of these questions would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

Sounds like a fun idea for old hardware.  I'll be interested to see if the Doc wants to put something together!

Has anyone noticed our propensity to have good luck on the weekends?  It seems like weekends are performing way better than weekdays.  Any thoughts on why?

DOC,
Any plans to open up any other cryptocurrencies on Bitminter?  Dual mining of Namecoins is a great starting point and, to be honest, I'm  not sure what other currencies use SHA-256 but I figured I would put the question out there.

For what its worth, I've had issues over clocking my U1.  It will happily overclock to 2.0 GH/S but anything over that and it errors out quite quickly.  But when its running at 2.0 is has a staggeringly low number of errors as compared to the old 336 mh/s Block Eruptors that I've used in the past.

Any recommendations for a good powered USB 2.0 hub? I'm using an Etekcity 10 port right now but not too happy with it.

It's plugged into a Raspberry Pi so I need 2.0

This one has worked great for me for a while
http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Port-USB-power-adapter/dp/B00DQFGJR4/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1397515820&sr=8-7&keywords=7port+usb+hub
7 ports and 4A of power, plenty of power for 8 units, you can only fit one U2 and 6 U1's on there though. That's my setup and they all run 2.0GH/s

I'm running a RPi too and using this hub.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/161225117669?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

It has the most ports that I could find for a hub that plays well with the Rasberry Pi.  Unfortunately, I had to get it from Australia (I live in the US) so it needs a converter (no worries, they are really cheap) and it pretty junky.  Its made of weak plastic and the power cord is really touchy so if you hit it or jostle the cord the power cuts in and out.  It brings back memories of my once beloved Sega Game Gear if any of you are old enough to:  A- Remember Sega Game Gear and B- Remember how temperamental the power cords were.

Other than the above mentioned, it seems to function quite well.  I'm currently running 4 BFL 30 GH/s units and 1 60 GH/s (though it only runs around 55 gh/ s) and a few USB miners (1 antminter u1 and 3 Block eruptors)
92  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Bitminter client (Windows/Linux/Mac) on: April 07, 2014, 07:33:28 PM
If you're talking about not overclocking an AntMiner you have to weight the hash rate against the rejections to find your sweet spot.  I guess you should probably factor in power consumption as well for a total picture.  Rejections aren't the end of the world when you're trying to get the most out of your gear.

Is it weird that I'm a 30 year old professional that is reading posts from you guys in the top 50 like you're rock stars?  Society tells me yes, I say no.  Its great to hear what you guys are running and the issues you're coming up against.

 Keep bringing the heat!!!

I'm running three 30gh/s BFL ASICS with no problems.  I'll be adding a 60 gh/s if it comes in the mail today.  I'm a big fan of Bitminter and the highly proactive Doc so if you're new.... welcome!

Hey, is anyone on here mining in Bitminter with a Rasberry Pi?  They seem pretty awesome and it would be nice to save some power and free up the laptop I've been mining through.

I have 3  30gh/s Butterfly Lab ASICS, a ton of Block Erupters/powered hubs and one Antminer u1.

I've read that you can mine in the Bitminter pool on these using a program called Minepeon.  Beyond that I don't know too much, I'm just reading around to see what information I can find.  I definitely want to continue mining here on Bitminter both because the DR. has been so helpful, proactive and communicative, and because its a really, pleasantly transparent pool.

Any advice is appreciated and any good threads that deal with the Rasberry Pi and Bitminter specifically would be great too.

DOC,
Any advice or warnings for mining through a Rasberry Pi?

The Beta seems to be working wonderfully and I really like the tune and tweak feature.  It makes it really easy to overclock and tinker with my AntMiners.

Is there any way to overclock the ASIC block eruptors?  Running at .336 mh/s is going to become useless, even with their low power consumption soon so I'd like to get everything out of them that I can while I can.

I'd love to keep it in the family but I'm putting a bunch of block eruptors up on Ebay in the next couple days.  They run 336 mh/s but I'm selling them in sets of 9 with an Anker Hub which should net you around 3 gh/s.  Here is a link to one of my auctions that just ended.

There will be a few more coming out soon so let me know if you want me to send you the link.

The fix is for the entire app slowing down and eventually locking up so you can't even access menus or click anywhere. Is that the problem you had? Or is it that the devices stop mining, and you have to start them up again? Do you get any error messages?

DOC,
No not the entire app.  I can still click the menus, and start and stop the "engine".  What I mean by "freeze up" is after a while the miners will stop mining, the gauge will show whatever hash rate I was hashing at the time of the freeze but all stats will stop changing, so all of the numbers to the right of the gauge will stay the same indefinitely, and the temperatures will stop changing as well.  I can audibly hear, if I'm in the room, as the fans in these rather noisy miners will drop from full speed to a way rpm (which they do when they're on and not mining, like if my computer is off but the miners are on).  I can kind of gauge how long they mined before freezing by looking at my accepted packets and it varies, usually from less than an hour to half a day.  Yesterday, on the Beta, I was able to get a whole day, night and it still looks good so far today (though I haven't done anything differently).

When I'm home later I'll see if there are any error messages but I can't remember anything standing out as strange.

I don't know if its related or not but sometimes (most of the time) I have to start and close the app a couple times before the app will A- Recognize all of my miners and B - Start mining when I click the go button.  Often I hit go and a temperature will show (at 32 degrees and never move) and no mining will take place.  At which point, I'll close the app and start it up again.  If it doesn't start working after a few tries I'll reboot both the miners and the computer but that doesn't seem to be a factor (blowing in my Nintendo cartridges)

Doc,
Thanks for the response.  I tried the Beta and I'm having the same issue.  It takes a couple start up, try, close, start up again attempts to get all three mining and then they only mine for a while before locking up, at which point I have to start the process over.  This happened a few weeks back but it seems like it's happening with an increased frequency and that they are locking up faster.

DR.
I think I'm having the same issue that was mentioned above with my BFL 30 gh/s little singles.  Did I understand correctly when you said that this is an issue with the current version of the client, and that it should be solved with the version that is currently in Beta?

Since the Beta version is up and I'm trying to put these miners to work is there any reason why I wouldn't use the Beta version now?  What are the concerns, outside of loosing mining time, that exist with the new version?
