I would say yes. Even if your PayPal is hacked you'll likely be able to recover the funds, most of the time anyway. Bitcoin however doesn't have such a good track record in this area.... I don't think I've ever heard of someone recovering all of the stolen funds after a hack. |

Since it's now no secret that the NSA has the capacity to hack into computers via radio waves (though apparently only on computers constructed with the proper hardware), what does this mean for things like Armory's offline transactions? Do you believe that this poses a viable threat, particularly if companies increasingly integrate backdoor radio transceivers into household computers and mobile devices? Moreover, has this issue been considered by the core devs? If your hardware has been tampered with, you're screwed. You need to source your hardware from somewhere you trust and check it as best you can (it isn't possible to 100% verify it hasn't been tampered with). I would say it's a viable threat because realistically almost anyone can do this kind of thing, it's not hard or expensive to do and there are countless ways you could exfiltrate data from an airgapped machine if you can modify the hardware, I would worry less about the NSA hacking into your computer via radio waves and more about the potential for your computer to be actually stolen.
It is quite easy to defend yourself against a thief getting access to your data. Your airgapped machine should be full-disk encrypted at the very least. Somebody stealing your device shouldn't be able to access your data, What you need to be worried about is somebody stealing your device and giving it back without you noticing, because a tampered bootloader or modified hardware can EASILY get access to your data. |

DDOS attack, huh? I sometimes wonder if people are doing this only for the laughs or if it's being done by truly malevolent people who are trying to pursue personal gains by this. Any ideas how you could profit from an attack?
Back in the early days when 80% of bitcoin trade happened over at gox, people would DDoS mtgox and the lag would increase to some insane amount making trading nearly impossible. It would temporarily crash the price, this exact method was used to crash the price on a number of occassions. The attackers probably had a short on bitcoin so profited that way. It's probably somebody trying the same thing again, doubtful they'll have much success nowadays though. |

How about adding a ticket system for handling support requests?
Both Theymos and BadBear's inboxes get flooded with support PM's and the current way to get through to them is to resend your request again after a few days if it goes unanswered. A ticket system could be useful here, it would allow staff to keep track of requests easier so we don't have to keep resending and allow requests to be assigned to the right staff member etc.
There are plenty of people complaining about having problems getting through to staff in meta. I think something like this is needed given the volume of support requests.

I believe this was discussed elsewhere...if I recall correctly, it was a db insertion hack and a fairly well known exploit. I think the user login stats on Satoshi on that forum did not update.
Yes, some known hacker claimed that he did it and pulled a similar prank on this forum, but we don't know for sure if he's lying or not. My gut feeling is that it was fake. That website had been abandoned and wasn't maintained for years, IIRC it was on a free web host too. The hackers story is believable. |

Oh man... It does sound like him, a lot to be honest. Well, his Steam Wallet deals were legit at least. Not sure why he is doing this though. Maybe the rush, maybe just because. Who knows with that guy. You won't know if they were legitimate or not for at least a few weeks, based on other cases I have saw of people gifting/selling fraudulently obtained gift cards. It takes Steam a while to react after they get chargebacked if they are purchased using stolen CC's. Typically your entire account will be frozen. Just be careful people and don't say nobody warned you. I don't believe him when he says he's buying everything at full price, if he is buying them for full price why doesn't he just give away the BTC instead? It doesn't make sense, what does make sense is that they are carded and it just so happens to be extremely common for people to giveaway or sell carded gift cards. |

I don't know if this is a good idea. In the marketplace (and in other similar exchanges) people will generally trust people who they have traded with previously. They will trust people who have done a lot of transactions with people that have traded with a lot of other people (see default trust). If you were to say that you trust "no one" then the vast majority of the trades would not be able to be facilitated because neither party would be able to "send first"
Use a multisig escrow. Past performance does not guarantee future performance. Pirateat40 was the highest rated user and always paid on time for a year up until he scammed millions. Trusting people based on the fact they have had lots of positive transactions in the past is a bad idea, that is how all of the biggest scammers pulled off their scams. |

Just so you know, if the file has been deleted you should NOT be using the computer. Every time you use it you risk overwriting the deleted file making it unrecoverable. You really should be doing the recovery process from another PC and have the hard drive connected as a slave and mounted read only.

Get a cheap notebook. Depending on your level of paranoia you might want to buy it off the shelf from a local store as technically an attacker could modify the hardware to do nasty things like steal your private keys. I picked up a really sweet notebook brand new for $200.
Open it up and remove the Wifi and bluetooth, simply disabling them in the OS or BIOS does nothing as malware can easily re-enable them, they need to be physically disabled or removed.
When you initially set it up add all the GPG keys you need so you can verify all the software you are installing hasn't been modified. Use USB sticks to transfer data back and forth. Do NOT execute any code at all that hasn't been GPG signed by a key that you trust. If you are running linux you can use apt-offline to do updates on your offline machine, although you should only install updates if you absolutely need to.
You may also want to set up your OS to ignore any devices other than USB sticks to prevent against your USB stick being reflashed with malware. Use the smallest USB stick you can buy to limit the amount of data that could be exfiltrated.
Also if you are using a custom OS like raspbian be careful, the RNG could have a bug in it. the Linux RNG uses information from your mouse, keyboard, hard drive and network to generate random numbers so depending on your setup it may not be as good especially if you are buying something ultra portable. On top of that the way the RNG works can vary depending on your distribution, freeBSD does not use any real-world source for entropy for example which could be devastating if a bug was ever found in Yarrow.
You might want to use real-world entropy to generate your wallet seed or private keys yourself, by flipping coins or using a deck of cards for example. There are threads on this forum with more information on how to do that. It will mitigate much of the risk associated with RNG's.
