Depend upon the economy growth and how the USD looses!!!

Actually it probably depends on the value of the dollar just as much as the other BS I posted Smiley

Parity.... The potential for bitcoin is huge. To be honest, there have been other digital currencies that have made waves, but have never had wide spread adoption. In my opinion, for parity to occur with staying power, bitcoin must be a common medium of exchange. I need to be able to buy breakfast with it anywhere I go. I need to be able to buy a pint of beer with it, dammit! I don't see this happening anytime soon. Right now I see people speculating on its potential future as a commonly used medium exchange, but we don't know if that will ever happen.

Bruce Wagner's retail initiative is a beginning. I could see parity occurring if we are successful here. I see going beyond parity when a major retailer picks up BTC. At that point, I think BTC will become a reserve currency, with multiple other currencies pegged to and backed by BTC in circulation in both digital and physical form. When that occurs maybe we'll see a more stable price for 1 BTC.

If and when BTC becomes more widely accepted
It might be this very initiative that will help to popularise Bitcoin - you know, a /. post about it, news site articles and so on.

True. What do you think; paper bills or coins?
84  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A "real" Bitcoin on: January 09, 2011, 10:37:05 PM
If and when BTC becomes more widely accepted, I'd consider starting a physical currency that is pegged to bitcoins.

Absolutely!   You're in charge of the Portland initiative.
Keep in touch with me....  and I'll keep you abreast of the status of the POS system, and its readiness.
I HIGHLY recommend creating a Portland Bitcoin Meet-up on Meetup.com and schedule a regular monthly Meetup to be held at that same cafe you mentioned!

Sounds good! I'll get started working on this.

I've listed a 5 gram gold bar for 796 BTC on #bitcoin-otc. Price includes shipping and delivery confirmation shipping. Insurance not included but can be added for additional cost.

Such a company will need to communicate accurate and timely financial data to its shareholders. I am halfway done with my masters in accounting and could provide accounting services such as adjusting and closing entries and preparation of financial statements. My resume is available on request! I'm willing to work for a modest amount of bitcoins.
89  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Buying precious metals on: January 09, 2011, 01:12:48 AM
I have a 5g bar of gold. I'll put an order on #bitcoin-otc to buy bitcoins w/ gold

I've only ever used Ubuntu. Back on Windows because my computer is actually owned by my employer.

Well the artists need money to pay for food, healthcare, and what not. What he is suggesting is pre-selling the next issue until supporters get enough BTC for him and then he can release it for free! Kiba, wouldn't you like to do the same with your art?

I just have different idea of a business model.

The incentive structure in each will certainly effect the product. For instance, the pre-selling prior to publishing scenario will give the author an incentive to release little bits at a time with a lot of cliffhangers that will keep his audience scrambling for the next issue. Over the long run the author would still have to deliver a quality product. I think a smaller, dedicated fan base could support such a business model, allowing for more niche artists and authors.

With the merchandising model it seems to me that your creations would have to permeate pop culture. Think Spider Man as opposed to The Walking Dead (the comic I mentioned above) which is released by an independent, creator owned publisher.

This is an awesome idea! I see it as the future for intellectual property.
...
Many fans simply download a pirated copy every time an issue comes out. Sales suffer. Alternatively, the author and artist could withhold writing the next issue until enough fans have ploinked down a few BTC each. Larger donations toward the issue could get you a signed, collectors comic book in print.
or fans live "am arsch der welt" / far far away where comics will be distributed in 1-2 years. so they pirate it away as soon as it is awailable Wink

Yes! So if I were the author, I wouldn't publish until I received a certain amount of money in donations; say 500 BTC. Once I have crowd sourced 500 BTC, then I publish the issue and upload the torrent tracker and the comic is free anyone to download.

The banks profit also eventually get's paid out as dividends of the bank's shareholders and then they spend it, the same as any other company.

Well, that's theoretically true.  In practice, fractional reserve banking results in the majority of interest bearing loans granted by banks within the Federal Reserve system are loaning out money that did not exist prior to the issuance of the loan.  Roughly 85% of all interest paid towards loans by banks are kept entirely by the bank due to those loans not being backed by any depositors to be compensated.  That 85% interest is the majority of the driving force of inflation in our modern world, the principal amount ceases to exist as the loan is either repaid, or defaulted upon.  This is part of the reason that banks are constantantly loaning out new funds, otherwise as loans are repaid (or defaulted upon) the currency in circulation would decrease, resulting in an overall deflationary environment.

I was speaking of banks operating in a world with a finite money supply, like BTC. Understood about fractional reserve banking.

I can totally SEE that....

Someone really needs to develop this game!

I'll help write the script! Anyone who wants to develop such a game should read "Gang Leader for a Day" and "The Underground Economy of the Working Poor," both by Sudhir Venkatish. He's a sociologist who documents the shadow economy of south Chicago; and it's shadow government: the street gangs and housing authority residence presidents that tax its citizens and even provide better protection for those under their watch than the Chicago Police (though I'd prefer neither!)

This sounds like a great theme for a new video game....

I envision this game starting out a lot like Grand Theft Auto. Start out as a thug with a street gang taking over a town. As more towns are taken over the gang becomes more bureaucratic and starts dressing more like the legitimate business men in the area.

ok, i didn't want to do it... but it looks like you guys force my hand. selling 5000btc at 1.288 usd each! it's my final offer! Smiley

You're much deeper than I am. 10BTC @ 1.285 USD each!
98  Other / Off-topic / Re: Say gang, I've got this GREAT IDEA! on: January 07, 2011, 04:42:13 PM
Of course you'll have to pay to get our guys over to the other town, and pay for when they get hurt, and pay for them to eat. Everybody has to chip in. Don't chip in? Rape cage or death.

If you don't chip in for that then you're obviously a godless communist.

The bank making money off of interest is little different then me making money off of digging ditches. Maybe if I dig enough ditches I will eventually have earned all the BTC in existence?

I'd apologize for the shmucks in my country inspiring the shmucks in yours, but I take no responsibility for "my" government's actions.
