I'll answer your question by quoting Mr. Universe from the movie Serenity.  Smiley

There's far too many ways for corporations and rich people to avoid paying taxes. If there were no loop holes, way more tax money would be collected. I heard the 1% figure somewhere, can't remember where. Don't get hung up on the actual figure though, the important point I'm trying to make is that corporations have far too many ways too avoid paying taxes (not to mention the subsidies they receive) and the poor (middle class) are left footing the bill. Of course it's always justified by using scare tactics, implying that these large corporations need tax breaks and subsidies otherwise they would up and leave.

The current corporate tax rates range from 0% to 90%. In most of the countries, it is around 10% to 40%. Tax evasion is severe, in countries where the tax rates are high, such as the United States and Japan. But still, I don't think that reducing the taxes from 40% to 1% is the solution. Even if it will bring back the taxes lost to tax evasion previously, the overall tax revenue will be minuscule.

Stop getting hung up on the 1% tax figure I gave (that number really is too low, if you believe we actually need to pay taxes at all, perhaps 10% would be more realistic) and focus on the fact that corporations and the 1% (elite) are evading paying most of their taxes. (Not to mention the preferential treatment, subsidies and bail-outs they demand.)

In the following video (around the 2:33 mark) it's stated that Apple paid only 1.9% tax instead of the required 35% tax they were supposed to pay. That's just one example.
The Tax Free Tour (vpro backlight - 2013)

After all is said and done, the government doesn't actually need tax revenues.

I was blowing leaves off of my property this morning (granted 7:30am might have been a bit early) when a police officer confronted me.  He told me that I was breaking the law (where I live the noise ordinance is from 10pm-6am).  When I let him know the law and asked what law I was breaking along with some other discussions, he responded by saying, "This isn't the good old days, freedom doesn't exist anymore."  He had a straight face and was dead serious.  It is a sad day when not even the police believe in freedom anymore or respect the laws.  I just wish I had been recording the interaction as it would have been youtube gold.

I guess you're supposed to be happy that you didn't get the shit beaten out of you for no reason along with the many other youtube clips.  To serve and protect right?

A 1% tax applied to people and corporations equally (no loop holes) would bring in more revenue than the current system. I believe the people should not be taxed whatsoever and the revenue from taxing corporations alone would still surpass current levels.

The system that you're suggesting of 1% tax (I'm assuming on all sales) would generate significantly less tax than the current system.  It wouldn't even cover the current consumption tax.

There's sales/consumption tax as well as corporate income tax, personal income tax and municipal property tax.

What will happen to all the people that want higher minimum wage once fast food goes robot? Who will they protest to give them more money for the entry level work?

This would be great and awful...riots would result, unfortunately.
Then the riot control robot trucks will take care of them...

That movie was so ahead of its time. Cool

I'd be interested in messing around with the new 'Snapmap' feature. I love making maps for mutiplayer games. I had a lot of fun making maps for 'Far Cry 2' and even racetracks for 'Moto Racer 2' way back when. Originally, I got the building bug from playing 'SimCity 2000' and later even games like 'Rollercoaster Tycoon'. (I even built houses for my old gf in 'The Sims'. lol)

Did you tell the cop that you knew freedom aint what it used to be or did you just let him talk your ear off then go back to your leaf blowing.

He didn't have much to say.  He just said that next time he comes out someone will go to jail.  Basically I have lost the right to use a leaf blower on my property.  The time of day really had nothing to do with it.  It's sad.  I own my property and I am not allowed to operate a leaf blower on it.  While his statement was shocking, it did prove to be true in this instance.

Of course the time of day had EVERYTHING to do with it. Use your blower at noon time and I'm positive NO-ONE will give you any flak for it.

I think the noise by-law is from 11pm til 8am in Toronto. If I was your neighbor I can guarantee you I wouldn't be happy with having to hear your blower at 7:30am. I wouldn't call the cops or anything, but I might mention to you that I wasn't happy waking up to your noise and ask you if you wouldn't mind doing it a bit later in the future. Personally, I think the noise by-law should be from 8pm til 10am.

The seasons for every show I've been watching is over. Constantine ended 4 months ago, Archer ended 2 months ago and Gotham ended 1 month ago. (Even The Flash and Last Man on Earth seasons are over, albeit I'm not as eager for them to resume.) Now that the Game of Thrones season has ended I have nothing left to watch.  Cry

I love the premises you posted.

This is a platitude. Farming doesn't impact happiness any more than hunting deer for survival or visiting grocery store for food do.

Farming isn't cultivating human beings, education/family/tribe/culture inculcation do that.

There is only one good: truth,
and one evil: ignorance

His philosophy does not apply to modern industrial agriculture practices. I think if you read his books and take it in that context, then his 'philosophy' (as it pertains to "natural farming") makes better sense. It is about learning to live in harmony with nature, as opposed to bending it to your will. (Basically, premise 8.) In this respect, I feel what he says remains true.

Furthermore, I believe that even the act of hunting cultivates violence (premise 4 could be applied here), while natural farming methods encourage the cultivation of peaceful and harmonious relationships with our environment and each other.

The average person living the first world today merely works (a miserable job) to survive, living from paycheck to paycheck. They are not really contributing to any technological advancements.

The majority of the people living in the world right now are heavily indebted, and severely exploited by the elite (mostly comprising of the bankers, oligarchs, corporations.etc). Only around 10% of the world population are enjoying their life. The remaining 90% are living in misery. Compare that to the uncontacted hunter gatherers. They all seems to be happy with their lives:

http://en.metapedia.org/wiki/Uncontacted_peoples

Your facts are true but conclusion is wrong.
People today don't suffer because of human progress but because of moral selfishness of the ruling elite.
Progress itself don't make people suffer but political and economic processes in the last 200 years, which led to the social imbalances that we have today.
Our planet has enough resources that we can all live well but the problem is in the use and availability.
Agriculture is not the worst mistake in the History of the Human Race but modern capitalism.

I think the real question is, how do you define progress? You are right when you say, "People today don't suffer because of human progress but because of moral selfishness of the ruling elite."

I don't necessarily believe agriculture is a mistake, but I do believe it is done wrong. Industrial/factory agriculture methods of monoculture crops, chemical fertilizers and pesticides, etc. is not the right approach to farming. Masanobu Fukuoka (a Japanese microbiologist, turned philosopher/farmer) had the right idea when it came to farming. Read his books, 'The One-Straw Revolution' or 'The Natural Way of Farming', if you want to learn about his perspective/philosophy of "Do Nothing Farming" or what he called "Permaculture".

Yet there's so much violent crime on the streets, people getting murdered, raped, robbed. Their job is supposed to be to keep the streets safe for the public yet all they care about is pleasing their "superiors".

Running a lemonade stand (or cookies, cakes, whatever else) is a very educational experience for kids of that age. This teaches them about business and handling money. Skills they will actually need in the real world, they won't  get taught this in school either. That's very sad they can't even do that any more. Such an innocent things, as long as they have an adult supervising them and watching their backs of course.

Is it true that in Texas kids can get a criminal record for bunking off of school? That's what we've heard over here in the UK. Rumor has the law is very strict and the cops very tough on it.

The elite class doesn't want you running your own business, they want you working for them instead.

And yet the media/govt wants to make "preppers" look crazy...
+1 Great observation. They've had seed vaults and deep underground military bases (DUMBs) for years, even decades, but preppers are crazy?

Check out this video of a trucker driving through an underground food storage facility in Springfield, Missouri.

Apparently they have tunnels like this connecting DUMBs that are hundreds of miles apart.

Yet it's only after all that that technological development is the highest. Hunter gatherers wouldn't be able to achieve the same progress if they spent all their time just trying to survive.

Except, they spent no more time "trying to survive" than farmers do.
Quote
hunter-gatherers have at least as much free time as do farmers.

The average person living the first world today merely works (a miserable job) to survive, living from paycheck to paycheck. They are not really contributing to any technological advancements.

I don't see any real reason why we wouldn't have comparable technologies (to today's) had we remained hunter-gatherers. Even if we did not become quite as technologically advanced as we are today, I believe we'd still be happier in general, nonetheless, remaining in tune with nature.
