81  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you own 1 Bitcoin? (2022 edition) on: May 19, 2022, 04:14:53 AM
Voted. It looks like there will be more No than Yes this time as the price of Bitcoin really pumps in the couple of years and I am sure that people have now lesser BTC than others. If I just saved all the BTC I have before, I have more than 3 BTC now.

You mean to say i would have.

No need to reply here. Just vote and reply voted so the thread does not fall down. Your vote is secret!

In 2017 it was 51% YES / 49% NO.
I'll leave voting open and since we are no longer in 2017 I'll change the subject to "Do you own 1 Bitcoin?""

Lets see 5 years down the road, has anything changed?
84  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why no one creates bitcoin v2 to allow new users to join the bitcoin wagon? on: May 15, 2022, 06:15:36 AM
It's because it doesn't really make sense to have a Bitcoin ver 2.0 and start from scratch. What will it accomplished?.

And that's why we have this forks that you have mentioned, and as you can see neither anyone of the becoming successful as BTC.

What about billions of people who missed the bandwagon? Not to mention 4 million or so Lost BTC.
85  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Why no one creates bitcoin v2 to allow new users to join the bitcoin wagon? on: May 15, 2022, 05:56:01 AM
There have been more than 19400 cryptocurrencies but strangely no one has come with an idea to restart bitcoin so to allow new users to buy and mine it from the start. We already know that 4 million or more have been lost. What stops a computer programmer to copy the entire bitcoin code and change only the limit from 21million to 20 million.
What stops the average crypto user to not to invest in it?

Yes there have been forks like bitcoin cash or bitcoin sv but they dont start from 0

Satoshi himself stated that bitcoin is only one of the first, there might be superior versions of a cryptocurrency.
86  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How would bitcoin difficulty adjustment work in reduced energy environment? on: May 14, 2022, 05:40:05 AM
I mean to say that govts start trying to starve the miners with cutting electricity to mining farms and raiding solar farms (off grid even)
We move to mining block on home electricity connections with less than 10kw load.
87  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How to receive Bitcoins with a cold wallet (Electrum offline wallet) on: May 14, 2022, 04:38:13 AM
I tried Qr code\text  load transaction in my offline wallet but nothing happens.
Both offline and online Electrum should at least be version 4.0.1 or higher.
If either one is an older version, the exported transactions wont be compatible.

To upgrade: Simply download the binaries from electrum.org, verify its signature (steps).
Then transfer it to the cold-storage machine via flash drive.
both are same version 4.2.0
88  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How to receive Bitcoins with a cold wallet (Electrum offline wallet) on: May 14, 2022, 03:38:44 AM
I have the same problem. I had bought btc via watch only wallet. I want to update my cold storage offline wallet. How to  do it?

I tried Qr code\text  load transaction in my offline wallet but nothing happens.

89  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How would bitcoin difficulty adjustment work in reduced energy environment? on: May 13, 2022, 11:58:25 AM
What if energy reqd to mine\verify transactions is greatly reduced by authorities. The electricity consumption is also reduced, how would then bitcoin eco system work?

Any post or reply if edited will show up as last edited. I personally do not think a detailed information about editing will benefit anyone in the forum.

Also I do not understand the need to post those links as they are basically asking for registration. You could have captured those edit display as images, uploaded on Imgur and posted here the direct links.

no reg is reqd. only two check ticks
92  Other / Meta / Re: No way to know if a user has edited the reply\topic on: May 12, 2022, 09:12:40 AM
It will only show if you edited the post after 10 minutes from first posting that reply. Here's an example (hover over the date): https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5398197.msg60104329#msg60104329

Ok i understand. I think it is done to save server space.

So yesterday i was replying to a user asking for help
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5398197.msg60104461#msg60104461

I first quickly replied to the questions and then edited my reply afterwords. What shocked me is that the forum software does not tell if a user has edited the reply!

eg of edited reply
https://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message5111991/pg1#93765729
not related to the topic
https://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message5130899/pg1

Can the admins add this feature?

Apologies for linking a conspiracy forum. I am a user there since 15 years and it was from that website i heard about bitcoin back in 2011.

ps: i have edited it 3 times!

94  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: 24 seed word offline bitcoin storage on: May 12, 2022, 04:30:28 AM
What is the best way to create offline bitcoin storage that never touched/touches the internet? I want to only use the 24 seeds words, and not any sort of product like a ledger or nano.

1. Install Tails onto an USB stick
2. Get Ian Coleman tool from git: https://github.com/iancoleman/bip39/releases, see for latest release and get the stand alone one; check it too. Put it to another USB stick.
3. Boot from Tails and make sure your internet cable is unplugged, also select in the start screen an admin password
4. Access the other USB from inside Tails (you may need admin pwd), copy Ian Coleman tool to /home/amnesia/Tor Browser folder
5. Run Ian Coleman tool.

- or -

Run Electrum and use that 12-word seed. It's usually good enough and may be safer than a seed generated by an in-browser script.

PS. adding 12 extra words to Electrum seed is not the same as having a 24 words seed.

I did not know this!
ANyways even more better option is to use raspberry pi zero

95  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where have you saved your bitcoin keys? (satoshi saved it in cd rom! allegedly) on: May 11, 2022, 05:18:47 PM
what if paper smudges and ink wears off?

dvd RW gold plated can last 100 years
96  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: 24 seed word offline bitcoin storage on: May 11, 2022, 05:13:41 PM
I'm fine with that, but they only allow 12 words.  Also, is there an alternative where I don't have to use software?

When creating electrum seed you can extend the seed to 24 words!!!!

Tried to Send you PM but could not: SO here is my message

Hope you liked my replies. can you tell me your btc history?
Here is mine
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5395810.msg59948590#msg59948590

I read your reply here
" I am also willing to pay for someone knowledgeable with a large post history to walk me through the process on discord voice call, so I can learn more about the whole process."

hope you have understood the steps. I am not a computer geek but used a lot of trial and error. the most difficult part was to how to link electrum via bwt to bitcoin core.

will help you if you need guidance but it will be very slow process as i can only do via this web forum. no third party site.

knew about btc back in may 2011 and dled the btc core app on 30 sep 2011. got free btc .0* something via bitcoin facuet, mined via bitminter in 2012 via geforce 525m and forgot about it. HDD crashed and i did not saved the wallet.dat file.

started this year with a bang.

follow trader university youtube channel.

btc address for donation is in my profile page.

97  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: 24 seed word offline bitcoin storage on: May 11, 2022, 05:05:46 PM
Ok thank you very much.  The creator of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JNL3-1lnvg in the comment section said this in reply to someone:

"Thanks TFS, Electrun is a great wallet but they are have announced that they will support BIP148 which means if that fork fails you have the potential to lose coins. Best bet is to control you own private keys."

So he is implying with electrum you don't control your own private keys, but is he wrong?

The best way to save private key is to save wallet.dat file. save the file on cd rom.

Lets say  in future electrum does not exist, your wallet.dat file can be loaded as it has the private keys.
98  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: 24 seed word offline bitcoin storage on: May 11, 2022, 04:59:36 PM
core meaning bitcoin core?
well bitcoin core will solve your fear of not using seed words. But it will be online and act as node.

solution is to buy raspberry pi 400. install raspberry os or ubuntu 22.04 (slower)
install electrum

steps
https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu-linux-tips/install-electrum-on-linux/

warning do not download old version. use electrum 4.2.1 and must verify the sign

then disconnect the pi 400 FOREVER

then create new wallet. generate seed (you can extend to 24 words )and save it on paper and lock it.

save the wallet.dat file on cd rom.

then on your online pc create watch only wallet.

and use this step to buy\sell

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQumISxkJsQ

WArning

before creating electrum WATCH only wallet which is connected to internet in windows. first download bwt plugin and put it in electrum plugins folder (destination is in c:\users\appdata\roaming\electrum)

and then link it with bitcoin core. This will make sure your transcasction is not leaking to third party. This has to be done offline.

once your electrum is connected with bitcoin core showin as connecting to only 1 node, you can then connect to the internet.

Then create a watch only wallet

99  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: 24 seed word offline bitcoin storage on: May 11, 2022, 04:51:38 PM
I heard that with electrum you aren't in control of your private keys?   Is there a better alternative?

who said that?
Its the most open source app with lightning network.

just follow the links above

ps: burn your wallet.dat file on cd rom. its emp proof and will out last all other electronic wallets.

air gapped raspberry pi 400 with raspberry os and electrum. You can extend the seed words to 24 words!

see video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQumISxkJsQ

to be more secure your watch only electrum should be connected with bitcoin core via bwt plugin. (hence no need for using electurm personal serveR as the first link stated)
