81  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TIL: Where the bitcoins at… Mysteries of the Blockchain on: November 17, 2014, 11:43:44 PM
Many 1’s:

There are 531 transactions going to a very unique address: 1111111111111111111114oLvT2 (many of them with advertisement like notes)
https://blockchain.info/address/1111111111111111111114oLvT2

While this is a valid address it is very likely that no individual has the private key for it, and the 2.98804915 BTC in it can never be spent

A selection of other unique addresses that are valid and contain a balance, but most likely no one has the key for:

Very interesting. However I think it is possible that at least some of the above addresses could be addresses created via vanitygen or some other similar address generator. Although I would think they would generally be very "difficult" to generate and a lot of effort would have likely been put into making such addresses, I would not discount the possibility that someone has the private keys to at least some of these addresses.

EDIT: Someone almost certainly controls the private key to 1111111111111111111114oLvT2 as there is a custom tag for that address on blockchain.info and in order to create a custom tag, you must sign a message that blockchain.info asks you to sign
82  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Charlie Shrem is scammer, watch out on: November 17, 2014, 11:35:58 PM
It looks like a much more appropriate request would have to asked Charlie to return the coins to you until he is able to sell them. Granted this would have cost you more because you would have had to pay shipping two extra times, however it would have been equitable for both of you
83  Economy / Lending / Re: I want 0.25 lets deal!! must read on: November 17, 2014, 05:46:25 AM
hi guys i want 0.25 loan for one month!! i know this loan is long term!!

REason: some investment physical!
PERIOD : one month
interest: 5-10%

i can provide my id but not directly to the borrower will give the id to the escrow!

please help me today is 11/16/2014 payback will be 12/16/2014

or i will work for you for 2 month with money !? then it will be no loan!!

Experience : i was SMM manager for 2 months

You id may not be worth 0.25. If you request a loan <0.05, MAYbe you might get one. Just Maybe.
IMO you should never lend based on just someone's "ID" as it is very well possible that the ID is not actually theirs and even if it is the borrower's actual ID there is nothing you can do with it once the borrower defaults.
84  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: SilkRoad 2 Taken down by Feds on: November 17, 2014, 05:44:01 AM
Feds will keep playing whack-a-mole with the darknet markets until they move onto something else ...
I disagree. As long as the world is at "war" with the drug trade, law enforcement is going to want to stop the darknet drug markets. The war on drugs has gone on for several decades now and does not appear to be slowing.

How do you disagree? SR gone, SR2 gone, SR3 is next...history repeats itself.
I don't think that law enforcement is going to move onto something else.

I don't think they are going to give up on the war on drugs

I love that phrase, "war on drugs". It cracks me up. When they finish that war they're going to start a war on food and then a war on cocktails with little umbrellas. The U.S. gov likes wars with inanimate things because they don't shoot back.
It is called the war on drugs because the government is trying to stop the drug trade and people using illegal drugs that often are used to finance terrorism.

If by 'avata' you mean "Avatar" or the picture next to some people's username, then they were partially disabled when the forum got hacked last year (the ability to change/add avatars was disabled).

When the new forum goes live sometime early next year avatars will be re-enabled again
86  Other / Meta / Re: Why was I banned for ten days for posting articles in politics and society? on: November 11, 2014, 05:34:27 AM
I'd really like to see a mod commenting on this, because I highly doubt that a user posting an article on a public forum is considered as copyright theft. Can we actually get banned here for quoting an article?

but might get you in trouble if people think you are using bots.

Don't know about copyright issues too.
It should be more then obvious if you are using a bot to post. Also using a bot in itself it not necessarily a problem as long as the content posted is useful.

For example ChartBuddy automatically posts a graphic of the price and market depth of bitcoin; and Actor_Tom_Truong posts many articles that may be of interest to people in the politics/society section (although I am not 100% sure this is automated)
87  Other / Politics & Society / Re: THE OIL AND GAS BUBBLE IS ABOUT TO POP!!! on: November 11, 2014, 05:29:26 AM
I think it would be backwards for Saudi Arabia to "punish" the US by having energy prices low. It is especially backwards to keep it low in order to delay the development of new technology of extracting oil.

Remember that the US is the world's top importer of crude oil and other petroleum products. Any fall in crude prices is going to be beneficial for the US, while affecting the Saudis negatively.
Yes, that is exactly my point. A spike in the price of oil would cause the US economy to rapidly slow down as people ship less items and use less transportation (drive less and go on vacations less). However a more gradual increase in the price of energy would cause the US to invest in other sources of energy like nuclear power
88  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The transaction fee is just ridiculous. on: November 11, 2014, 05:27:24 AM
I once had a small transaction. Took about less than 48 hours to confirm. Still, it bothered both me and the receiver. We just waited it out. I no longer make "free" transactions, I just include a small fee almost all the time now.
It would not bother me as long as you know the counterparty is not going to be receiving the goods/services they are to receive for several days. If for example you sent a TX to bitpay to pay for an order on amazon (both of whom I would trust to "send first") without a TX fee, most of the time they will not be able to send the goods for a couple of days so the fact that it takes 48 hours to confirm would mean nothing because if one of the inputs is double spent then amazon could simply cancel the order
89  Other / Off-topic / Re: Time to switch to i2P? on: November 11, 2014, 05:23:31 AM
Fake data is just some real data padded and then encrypted. There is no way to distinguish the two apart without the decryption keys. The fake data is simply generated by the sender, and then discarded on the receiving end.

This reminds me of mp3's. Music used to be encoded as constant bit rate (CBR), now there are more variable bit rate (VBR) files. We are simply going backwards with the technology.
If you have a node that is receiving the data then you know what is fake (because you disregard it) and what is real (because you continue to relay it)
90  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DO NOT GIVE THE GOVERNMENT ANY INFORMATION ABOUT BITCOIN on: November 11, 2014, 05:21:03 AM
Don't think they need any info to be told when you are shouting them at the top of your lungs in the most sophisticated, seductive and pervasive surveillance tool to ever grace the history of mankind - the internet.

Best part is most people think they are more anonymous then being offline.

You can't make this stuff up.
Well to be fair the places that bitcoin is being discussed and information about bitcoin can be found are not exactly the most difficult to access websites around (provided the country you are accessing it from is not trying to censor the internet - china-)
91  Other / Politics & Society / Re: ‘Democracy Alliance Network’ Behind A Third Of 2014 Super Pac Spending on: November 11, 2014, 05:19:20 AM
Are we surprised both parties have extremely wealthy people spending outrageous sums of money to try and sway elections?

I'm not.

Are we surprised the democrats would be accusing the republicans of getting evil money while doing the same thing and outspending them many fold?

I am not.
The dems actually outspent the republicans overall and outspent them in many competitive races that the republicans ended up winning.

The reason why democrats cry wolf about "evil money" is because it comes from corporations and business groups when it goes to republicans, however the large sums of money that democrats receive generally come from labor groups which is not considered "evil money" in the eyes of democrats

Another not considered "evil money" man in the eyes of democrats. I mean come on! His last name is a palindrome!!!! That is straight up james bond villain level to me... And yet.

LOL. Well I would certainly say that he at least looks like a villain in the bond movies.

The Nobel Prize winner will fix it....
Obama's nobel prize was actually revoked.

Wth, no it wasn't.  Huh
Yes, the nobel committee asked for it back, essentially revoking it

This was the 2nd result (below wikipedia) when searching google for 'obama nobel peace prize'
94  Other / Politics & Society / Re: THE OIL AND GAS BUBBLE IS ABOUT TO POP!!! on: November 11, 2014, 05:12:26 AM
No it is not.

The reason why Oil and Gaz prices are low is due to Saudi Arabia strategy to punish the US for it new oil policy (shale and what's not) and of course political reasons such as the US getting closer to Iran....

By keeping Oil prices low, Saudi Arabia mainly is making investement and breaking even point of shale oil and other alternative very difficult and Saudi Arabia is ready to keep the price low for a couple of years if it needs two, other countries like Venezella or Algeria ...ect cannot afford that
I think it would be backwards for Saudi Arabia to "punish" the US by having energy prices low. It is especially backwards to keep it low in order to delay the development of new technology of extracting oil.

Higher oil prices would have a much worse impact on the US economy and the US government over both the short and long term, especially sharply higher oil prices (just think of what happened in the 1970's oil/gas crisis.

I agree with Cube here. I am anti-death penalty,

Do you believe pedophiles can be reformed?
What the hell does this have to do with anything? You know they don't execute people for pedophilia right?

But there are some criminals that can never be reformed
Life in prison would be the solution here if you are against the death penalty.
96  Other / Politics & Society / Re: This is ridiculous on: November 11, 2014, 05:07:06 AM
Is there encryption technology that could easily be built right into all cellphones so that all calls would be scrambled? This would make all phone calls not viewable or audio available except to the recipient phone... like a general phone PGP or GPG.

Smiley

Now you are thinking correctly.

PGP still depending the where you store it. If you let Apple manage all that information, it is not that much different than what security certificates do these day.
Although the encryption used in iPhones is not PGP, it is for the most part not crackable unless you know the 4 digit PIN (with only 10,000 combinations) and for most people will be just as good (with the exception of the limited number of PINS). If apple would allow for an actual password (instead of a PIN) to decrypt a phone then it's security would be more then enough for the vast majority of people

15 years and parole in 5

It should be thrown out though I hope.
There are a lot of facts/circumstances about the case that could get it (or a large portion of government evidence) to be thrown out on appeal.

One notable issue is that the judge denied the defense's motion to suppress evidence from the SR1 server in iceland because the government did not have a warrant on the basis that Ross did not claim ownership of the server, even though if he did claim such a fact it could not have been used against him in court, but could be used to impeach his testimony in the event he were to testify.
98  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Isn't Contract-For-Difference or CFD a form of gambling? on: November 11, 2014, 04:58:04 AM
No. It is much more commonly used as a way to hedge an existing position in either the security the CFD is a derivative of or a similar security. It is a way for market participants to manage risks

Things are heating up behind the scenes and I'm getting excited, y'all!

Politico: Rand’s grand plan - An inside look at the senator's presidential rollout

Quote
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul has made key decisions about how to launch his presidential campaign for the 2016 Republican nomination, including a plan to headquarter his effort in Louisville and opting to run for re-election to the Senate at the same time he moves forward with the national race.

Coming off a midterm campaign blitz in 35 states, Paul has summoned a few dozen advisers – a mix of veterans of his father Ron Paul’s insurgent campaigns and more mainstream GOP leaders — for a closed-door summit at a Washington hotel on Wednesday to discuss his future plans.
...

Paul, who will face a much more crowded field on the Republican side but starts out as a slight front-runner in public polls, has begun an aggressive early campaign against Clinton. ... “And also, she didn’t think through the unintended consequences of getting involved in the Libyan war. So I think you’d have an interesting dynamic, were there's a [Republican] nominee that was for less intervention overseas and in the Middle East and that’s fiscally conservative. You’ve never seen that kind of combination before, and I think there’s a lot of independent voters, actually, that might be attracted to that kind of message.”
...

[H]is advisers have already laid out a timetable: They expect the campaign will be a “go” by mid-April, with an announcement as quickly after that as his staff can put together a fly-around to the early states.

Before zeroing in on Louisville as Paul’s likely campaign headquarters, advisers reached out to veterans of 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s campaign to consult on the advisability and specific requirements of running a national campaign from outside Washington, deciding the symbolic importance of basing the campaign in his home state outweighed any concerns about easy access for Washington-based staffers and political operatives from across the country.
...

Kentucky has a law preventing a candidate from running for more than one office at a time, but Paul advisers believe they have found multiple ways around the restriction without changing the law or challenging it in court, including exploring changing the state’s GOP primary to a caucus.
...

[H]e’s already built what top GOP operatives consider by far the most extensive operation of any of the party’s presidential hopefuls...

Paul was endorsed for president last week by incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell...

Headed into the presidential campaign, leading Paul advisers include Jesse Benton, a longtime Paul family operative, who lives in Louisville; Doug Stafford, who is considered Paul’s chief strategist and leading planner of his presidential campaign; Nate Morris, an entrepreneur who recently was named to Fortune’s “40 Under 40” list and has been a Paul door-opener in Silicon Valley and beyond; and Doug Wead, who has been helping with outreach to evangelicals. His media consultant is Rex Elsass, CEO of the Ohio-based The Strategy Group for Media.

In the states with early presidential primaries and caucuses, the team includes: John Yob, a Michigan consultant and former John McCain operative who is RAND PAC’s national political director; in New Hampshire, Mike Biundo, who managed Rick Santorum’s 2012 presidential campaign; and in Iowa, Steve Grubbs and A.J. Spiker, both former chairs of the state Republican Party.

His top outside foreign-policy advisers are Lorne Craner, a former assistant secretary of state for President George W. Bush; and Elise Jordan, a former speechwriter for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Sergio Gor, who heads Paul’s communications team, is a social-media guru...

Scott Reed, who ran Bob Dole’s presidential campaign in 1996 and now is the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s senior political strategist, said: “In any two-week period of this last six months, Rand Paul did more smart things to grow the party than everyone else combined. Going to Berkeley and barrios and ghettos – he’s not afraid to go where no one else wants to go.”

More...http://www.politico.com/story/2014/11/rands-grand-plan-112729.html
It is hard to believe that the presidential campaigns are starting up already - we are almost two years before the election. I think things will get to be more interesting as we move past the Iowa caucuses as this is when it becomes much more clear as to who will potentially win each party's nomination and the nominees can actually start campaigning against eachother
