81  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: blockchain MyWallet will not pair with my Android on: April 25, 2013, 01:39:55 PM
I just installed the app on my Nexus 7 yesterday, and while I was able to scan the QR code, it still isn't working. I just get a message "Error downloading transactions." Version 3.32

I tried clearing the cache, and would try clearing the data but I'm not sure that would be safe (would I lose the pairing?).
82  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Gold/Silver Merchants Accepting BTC -- Recommendations? on: April 24, 2013, 02:58:19 PM
I bought from Amagi Metals before I or they got into bitcoins, and they seem to be doing a good job. http://www.amagimetals.com/

I think Roberts & Roberts might accept bitcoins. http://rrbi.co/

http://donttreadonmeme.com/ does, and I know these guys personally as good folks. They get their silver dimes from Roberts & Roberts.

Lastly, I sell gold and silver intended not for investment but for trade and in small amounts. https://shiresilver.com
83  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What do we do about government monopoly? on: April 20, 2013, 12:48:59 PM
Example: say a business wants to begin paying their employees in Bitcoins? well, it's not that easy. there's so much monopoly on what it means to be a business, it seems. you need insurance for various types of businesses, and not to mention all the legal issues. I feel like for bitcoin to go to the next level, we are going to have to get rid of all government. There is no way for the government to adapt to this new peer to peer world. The government must go, then the free market will flourish. Otherwise, Bitcoin will come and go.. they'll eventually be worth $0.00 if nothing is done to take them to the next crucial level.

YEAH!. Lets get bitcoin to the next level by breaking down the substrate of society!
I'm sure humanity is overall smart and wise enough to be able to deal with themselfs without governance.
If you have bitcoins you don't have to worry about the problems governemnts solve.
Let's just all be positive, ok? If you're positive things will just magically work out. That is the magical rule.
Next Level FTW!

 Undecided

Lets get bitcoin to the next level by replacing the current inefficient and chaotic substrate of society that is based on violence and one size fits all "solutions" with one that is self-ordering and based on voluntary interactions.

If you have bitcoins you have less to worry about how the governments have done a poor job of solving problems.

Let's be positive, and recognize that the market does seem to work magic, even though it is really just the unleashing of human creativity and productivity in ways that no politician or bureaucrat can possibly imagine.

Pick one thing you can do that will help rebuild a better society, and concentrate on that.

Here's one example that I think really illustrates the point: car registration and driver's licensing. Our (at least the American version) current way of doing things is ridiculous. We have government's controlling the licensing and car plates, when that is clearly corporate welfare that protects the insurance companies and their profits. Why not instead place the regulatory burden back onto the insurance companies by making them handle licensing and plate issuance. The insurance companies would own the plates, and if you are paid up you can keep the plates on your car. If you stop paying, they repossess the plates. Anyone driving without a plate is uninsured, so other motorists can take notice and be more careful around them. A good insurance company might have a better plate, that can use simple tech to indicate whether or not the current driver has a license and possibly even what skill level they have shown. This allows for more freedom while also allowing people to take more control of their own safety.

Now apply that sort of thinking to any other thing that government currently does and see how that will transform society to the point that we no longer need government.
84  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Teresa is going to get a visit from the IRS on: April 18, 2013, 01:32:07 AM
I know Teresa and Fr33Aid well. I think they are doing this right.

Fr33Aid accepts donations and doesn't pay the workers who are all volunteers. All the donations are used for is expenses, like a defibrillator and bandages. Fr33Aid is also well connected to many knowledgeable new media experts like Free Talk Live.

If the IRS comes down on Fr33Aid it will hit the social networks like a ton of bricks, showing just how harmful the IRS is. The IRS has nothing to gain from this and lots to lose, and I know the folks running the organization are smart enough to mention that to the first agent that messes with them.
85  Economy / Auctions / Re: ASICMINER Auction: 10 Block Erupter Blades on: April 18, 2013, 01:25:17 AM
If the problem is the concern about fake account, then why not price the units at a static price?

The whole point of the auction is to figure out what the price should be.

With everyone looking to pint fingers at Iran, NK, Tea party, etc; the mooninites will surely get away with it. Clever bastards.
87  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-04-12 Roger Ver Rocks on FoxBusiness!! on: April 13, 2013, 04:05:46 PM
What's the crest on Roger's blazer?

Free mason...   Masons run the world and Ver is in on it.

You sure? The badges site says it's a "Voluntaryist Pin". They do have a lot of pins with triangular formations, but none of which really seem Masonic to me, other than their shape.

LOL, I saw Davi post on his FB that the pins Roger is wearing were his. I have the "Free People of the Shire" pin myself, which I got from Davi at Liberty Forum.

89  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: electrum technical question on: April 13, 2013, 01:28:05 AM
Like you said, it comes down to the seed.  The client is locally regenerating your private keys on the phone, from the seed.  It can then derive all the public addresses and have the Electrum server search the blockchain for relevant transactions, to "synchronize" between devices.

But if the servers are all gone, there's no server to do that. Can an Electrum client independently regenerate everything it needs to export funds without having any server access?

Yes, exactly. The key generation from the seed is done in the client with no need for a connection to the server. Then you could export the private keys and import them into another wallet. Then that wallet can scan the blockchain to recreate the accounting of your balance.
90  Economy / Goods / Re: Accept DYM as well as BTC for your silver items on: April 12, 2013, 11:59:41 PM
If this kind of thing is really going to take off, then the Ripple community needs a BitPay analog. At the very least some plugins for shopping carts.

ShireSilver,

I thought of you when creating DYM. Why not create something similar for ShireSilver? In addition to a shopping cart, just offer on ripple 1 gram SIL for $2.00 (your current prices). When someone redeems, you ship to them. A market may develop and wouldn't have to have a buyback program.

I've thought about becoming a "bank" before and rejected it.
https://shiresilver.com/blog/2010/jan/who_should_be_banker

Partly, its not in my core competency. I have more than enough keeping me busy just running and improving the business. And I am a big fan of competition, so it just wouldn't seem right for me to be "the" Shire Silver bank when others might want to give it a try. Essentially I'm trying to move more towards being a wholesale manufacturer of the Shire Silver model alternative currencies, with franchised retail outfits.

So if you'd like to, go ahead and create one. I'm all for that idea. I'll help when I can.

BTW, this might be of help: https://shiresilver.com/msrp_txt - I do still need to strip out the chrome, but that's pretty far down on the to-do list.
91  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Stuck transaction using electrum wallet on: April 12, 2013, 11:45:44 PM
Have you exited the program and restarted it? I've seen it not update the display even when the actual transaction has been long confirmed.

BTW, those transaction IDs don't seem to be valid, at least not according to blockchain.info

And remember to always send with a transaction fee.

Not sure if there's anything that can be done other than wait. Maybe some expert friend can help you using Armory with importing of private keys or something.
92  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: electrum technical question on: April 12, 2013, 11:04:59 PM
If Electrum hosts your wallet (technically, your private keys) and they disappear, I do believe that means your money disappears with them. There's no way to spend/sell coins that you don't control. It's not as insecure as Instawallet was, but it's not like having direct control over your wallet (keys). It may be good for convenience, but when you start talking about real money (which is personally defined -- what I consider "real money" others would consider petty cash -- it's basically an amount you'd really hate to lose), you'd better move those funds to something over which you have direct control.

Electrum doesn't host your wallet, just the blockchain.

Traditional wallets hold both your private keys and a copy of the blockchain. But the blockchain is huge and getting bigger all the time.

So if the Electrum servers (there are multiple) all went down what you would do is export your private keys from your Electrum wallet and import them into another wallet. Then you would be able to spend your bitcoins again.
93  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: MTGOX so let me get this straight.... on: April 12, 2013, 03:38:59 AM
If you think they can solve architectural scalability problems with fine tuning of a single instance database, you are wrong.

Trading Exchanges are not run on single instance databases. That is simply a fact. They are run by thousands upon thousands of distributed systems with multiple tiers of redundancy. Market data and reporting are completely separate from trading engines. Front-end stuff never even comes near the trading engine.

Oh, by the way: Fuck you.  I only criticized GOX based on the multi-year operations. You're making excuses for a bunch of idiots and making assumptions about people you don't know, based on a few words in a forum.

I didn't say that you can solve everything with just database tuning, but did imply that it was at least one of the things they might be doing. There's a whole lot of speculation going on here, and except for Gox mentioning that they were adding servers and moving their database off of the front end server, that's all it is - rampant and mostly pointless speculation. You're spewing condemnations when you don't really know what's going on. I don't know either, but as I have some experience in IT I can imagine all kinds of things that they might be doing to try to improve things, and I can imagine all kinds of things that could be preventing them from getting things straightened out quickly. I have some patience.

And no, I'm not affiliated with them in any way. I don't even have an account on any of the currency exchanges. I just really hate people bashing repeatedly with wild speculations when its a waste of time. Make your case, state it to the world once clearly, quit using their service, and get the fuck over it and move on. But you don't need to fill up these threads with repeated regurgitations of your pointless accusations.
94  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: MTGOX so let me get this straight.... on: April 12, 2013, 03:20:06 AM
I've actually managed data centers and have run businesses so don't patronize me like you know me. I've worked with financial services IT for about 18 years now.

"Fine tune the database"? What the hell is this, an MS-Access app?

LOL, now I know you're nothing more than a troll. Anyone with experience in financial services IT would know that databases have a lot of configuration that needs to be messed with. Indexes can be added, tables can be pegged to memory, different table engines can make a difference; but these need data to be analyzed to determine if they will actually help. Are they using stored procs, and if so would recent changes in data usage mean they should be rewritten?
95  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: MTGOX so let me get this straight.... on: April 12, 2013, 02:57:30 AM
Why would you expect them to NOT lag when everyone who is at all interested will be picking this one time to be going to their site. Please have some frakkin sense.

Really? So they didn't increase their scale to at least the peak volume of the last week?

Oh wait, they're about 50% of peak and still lagging.

Never mind, keep makign excuses, they're laughing all the way to the bank.

So they should have known a month or two ago what the peak volume last week would have been?

Sure, they should have expected a mad rush of basically everyone who has ever been interested in bitcoins to be hitting their server all at the same time, and maybe they did. Maybe they calculated that since the peak they were going to get at the anointed time was going to be a one time event that they would only need to survive through and that regular usage would be much lower. Maybe they figured they didn't need to spend tons of money for the expected one time event when it would be a waste after that. There's a whole heck of a lot of decisions that have to be made when actually running a business that outsiders would never suspect.

Why not have a little damn patience and give them an hour at least before complaining about it. Heck, they probably needed at least an hour's worth of new data just to have enough information to fine tune the database.
96  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN Mt.Gox] Hi everyone, just a quick update on the situation and what happened on: April 12, 2013, 02:45:22 AM
Here's the funny thing:

Bitcoinity is currently handling more than 11k simultaneous users, streaming charts and tracking lag. Far as I can tell, bitcoinity is not lagging even 1 second. They are lightning fast.

Meanwhile, with a lot fewer users and trades mtgox is basically 10 minutes behind on average

Funny how the charting company is doing better for FREE than the multi-million revenue exchange.

IDIOTS

(bitcoinity you rock!)

LOL, yeah a site that just shows some data and doesn't need to handle any user specific data nor worry about security is faster than one that needs to make sure that every user's pages have data that is live especially for them.

Those of us that have actually built web applications at least have a little understanding that there's a huge difference in functionality between these sites. The guys behind Gox may not be the best and brightest, but the demands on their system are a whole heck of a lot more than one that can cache pretty much everything.

98  Economy / Speculation / Re: Mt. Gox reopens in 1 hour. Predictions? on: April 12, 2013, 01:30:50 AM
Did they have the trading front end running on the same box as the dbase?  (As if they shouldn't have put that into 2 boxes already).

Maybe they went out and bot those PCIe Ram Disk cards?  (With 500K/day of revenue, shouldn't they have done that already).

The fact that they CAN upgrade the dbase in 12 hours scares me to begin with!

IT guys thoughts?

I thought I saw on another thread that yes, they did have the front end and the DB on the same box. Moving the DB to another machine *should* be a trivial task, but when dealing with mission critical components making sure it all works properly means caution and testing.

If the database upgrade is a simple swap for more power (better CPUs, more RAM, faster drives) then yes it can be done in 12 hours.

[12 years as a programmer, with the last 5 of them working on a large web platform.]

And don't forget that the real problems with the gold standard weren't due to the gold, but to the standard.
